Re: question re setting up new iPhone

2015-09-28 Thread Scott Granados
I ended up getting mine today which isn’t bad. Working very well. The new
radio / cell modem seem much improved. I hold on to LTE signals much better
and the phone supports the new T-Mobile band 12 block. Seems like a hefty
upgrade.

Re: size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

2015-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
OIS seems to mostly help with stabilizing video, from what I've read. Holding
still for a shot with an OCR app, you probably won't notice it as much.

To say that Apple could include OIS in their smaller devices but chooses not to
seems groundless. We don't know if they could or not, because we don't know how
the cameras work. What if the Plus is the only device to offer the necessary
room? What if there are other technical reasons they couldn't do it last year
or this year? Apple is always close-mouthed about technical challenges, so no
one has a clue what the story is. Could this be just another way to drive sales
toward the larger (and more expensive) phone? Certainly, and I'm not saying it
couldn't be. However, there's also no reason to say that this is absolutely the
case.

Other than that, what do you lose by going for the 6S over the Plus? More
battery life, which is simply a consequence of not being able to cram as much
battery into a smaller phone. No landscape mode for apps like Safari or Mail,
which is a design decision--the smaller screen just couldn't show apps in the
special landscape mode with enough room to let you operate them effectively.
Remember that Apple is all about esthetics, and a bad user experience isn't
worth it to them, so they will carefully evaluate things and only bring
features that look good on big screens to smaller screens when they know they
can do it well. Finally, you lose the extra room for app screens or braille
input, which is, again, a consequence of a smaller screen.

Aside from OIS, both models are the same in all but screen/battery. The same
camera, amount of ram, Touch ID sensor, flash, button placement,
processor/coprocessor, wireless abilities, ports, NFC chip, and so on. I guess
I'm not seeing the big deal; if you don't want the Plus, the smaller iPhone 6
or 6S is still the same device, just smaller and lacking OIS. It's also $100
less.

Yes, I tend to turn my phone off at night when I'm asleep. That is, of course,
unless it is being charged. But I have certainly turned my phone off on various
occasions since getting it. So that may explain the problem. Unfortunately, I
don't have anything I want to buy right now to test out the theory, since it

from an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 perspective so I hope they make sense.

What do you have the Use Touch ID For setting turned on for? My choices are
iPhone unlock, Apple Pay, and iTunes and Apps Store. I hate to be elementary
but I'm assuming you do have those last two turned on?

Do you have the Require Passcode setting set to immediately or to some other
setting?

Do you have Passbook option turned on in the Allow Access when Locked
setting?

These are just some of the things I'd suggest you look at to make sure they
are set to get the Touch ID results you're expecting.

Good luck.

RE: size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

The the glass screen protector at your carrier’s store and they will put it on
for you.

Note; I had one and my brother also and they both got bubbles under them so we
took them off.

Whether you need optical image stabilization is dependent on whether you use
the camera to take pictures. If you do, it may help. If you don't, and that
includes even if you do OCR, it's not worth it. It will not matter. Go with
what feels better in your hand, because if you get something it's too big, you
will be nothing but frustrated. That is just my opinion of course. Where did
you get the gorilla glass screen protector?

Anders,

I agree with you about phone size. I really would like to have something the

wish they would do something for those of us with smaller hands. Oh well. There
was a rumor that said they were going to come out with a new one that was the
same size as the 5S. But so far, as you know that has not happened. Plus, if
they do, it probably won't have all of the same features as the larger phones.

Optical image stabilization isn't the only thing you get for that extra hundred
dollars for the 6S plus. I don't know how it is accomplished. It is possible
that they need the larger size to make it happen. I don't know how big the
Samsung phones are either. But I do know that for me as a blind person, optical
image stabilization is not necessary or useful.

That's not true because Nokia has that feature on its VZW (NowRetired)
LumiaIcon (Lumia929) & Samsung has it on their MobilePhones since launching the
GalaxyS5 & Beyond (that includes the Note Series as well as the Galaxy S Series

the GalaxyS6 is about 5.1 Inches & the GalaxyS6Edge+ is about 5.7 Inches

And, as I recall, the iPhone6S+ is about 5.5 Inches & the iPhone6S is about 4.7
Inches

Apple could have this feature on both modles, but it chooses not to

As I understand it, this feature is rumored to help in catching/viewing Video
and/or taking pictures

I'm sure others, who have the iPhone6+ and/or
iPhone6S+ can ChimeIn on it. I am particularly
interested to hear from TotallyBlind users of the
iPhone6+ and/or iPhone6S+, and how it functions
for them. It would be Great if they had an
iPhone6 and/or iPhone6S to Compare TheDifferences With & WithOut the
Optical Image Stablization feature

Yes, I tend to turn my phone off at night when I'm asleep. That is, of course,
unless it is being charged. But I have certainly turned my phone off on various
occasions since getting it. So that may explain the problem. Unfortunately, I
don't have anything I want to buy right now to test out the theory, since it
has been less than four hours since I signed in and made that purchase.

Re: size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

2015-09-28 Thread Regina Alvarado

I bought it in the Sprint store. It is wonderful. I would say Amazon or other
places have them, though. No more stuck fingers. In fact, I find myself tapping
even lighter on the screen. Do not know why this is so, however. It just
happened. It cost about 40 dollars so it is more expensive, but I will always
have one.

RE: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well.

First, let me mention that, as I hate to hijack a thread, I will post the
following comments in a separate thread, as well as this one.

Second, both Cara and I always appreciate any feedback on list policies as it
is necessary to revisit such subjects from time-to-time.

Third, I want you to know that, thanks to the elegance of the native Mac Mail
application, I read virtually every post to this list so rest assured that your
comments are being heard by the moderators and all of your suggestions will be
considered.

Fourth, at this time, the general list policy, implemented on Wednesday,
September 16, 2015, in the thread entitled “MODERATOR NOTE: General List
Discussion Policy Update”, a few weeks back, stands. That is to say, all
non-beta Apple-related discussions are welcomed on this list.

Fifth, I ask that this particular thread, discussing the scope of list
discussions, be closed. I realize that, due to differences in time zones,
personal schedules, etc, many list members will not see this post, requesting
that this thread be closed, immediately. As a result, there will doubtless be
a few more posts to this thread. That’s okay. Please do not take it upon
yourselves to admonish those who may appear to be disregarding my request.
Just trust that I am monitoring the threads and I will determine if someone is
disregarding my request for thread closure.

Sixth, in order to insure that this topic will not begin to threaten the fabric
of the list’s integrity, those who continue to contribute to this thread will
be placed on moderated status.

Finally, please send any comments regarding this or any list policy to me,
off-list, at: mk...@ucla.edu.

Thank you all for being a part of this community.

Sincerely,

Mark

My carrier store does not have glass screen protectors. That is T-Mobile. I got
one for my 5S2 years ago from the Verizon store. I have seen one online made by
anger, and sold from Amazon via anchor direct. I am debating whether or not I

Re: size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

2015-09-28 Thread Robin
That's not true because Nokia has that feature on
its VZW (NowRetired) LumiaIcon (Lumia929) &
Samsung has it on their MobilePhones since
launching the GalaxyS5 & Beyond (that includes
the Note Series as well as the Galaxy S Series

the GalaxyS6 is about 5.1 Inches & the GalaxyS6Edge+ is about 5.7 Inches

And, as I recall, the iPhone6S+ is about 5.5
Inches & the iPhone6S is about 4.7 Inches

Apple could have this feature on both modles, but it chooses not to

As I understand it, this feature is rumored to
help in catching/viewing Video and/or taking pictures

I'm sure others, who have the iPhone6+ and/or
iPhone6S+ can ChimeIn on it. I am particularly
interested to hear from TotallyBlind users of the
iPhone6+ and/or iPhone6S+, and how it functions
for them. It would be Great if they had an
iPhone6 and/or iPhone6S to Compare
TheDifferences With & WithOut the Optical Image Stablization feature

Everything checks out in the settings. And I posted this question to both
places because I know there are people on Mac visionaries who do not subscribe

Re: Chrome Busy

2015-09-28 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
I’ve seen this before although, not in a really long time.
The easiest way that might fix it hopefully, is to use something like App
Cleaner to completely uninstall and by that I mean, not only delete the app,
but it also removes preference files and such for it. Then, try reinstalling
Chrome. Although be aware, that you’ll have to go into System Preferences/Users
and Groups/Login Items tab and remove Google Chrome from that list if you don’t
want Chrome popping up every time you reboot.
If all that doesn’t work, try downloading and installing the latest Chrome beta.
Hope that helps,
Jeffrey

Were you able to feel the bubbles? Interesting. I wonder why as it fits over

MODERATOR NOTE and REQUEST: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well.

First, let me mention that, as I hate to hijack a thread, I will post the
following comments in a separate thread, as well as this one.

Second, both Cara and I always appreciate any feedback on list policies as
it is necessary to revisit such subjects from time-to-time.

Third, I want you to know that, thanks to the elegance of the native Mac
Mail application, I read virtually every post to this list so rest assured
that your comments are being heard by the moderators and all of your
suggestions will be considered.

Fourth, at this time, the general list policy, implemented on Wednesday,
September 16, 2015, in the thread entitled "MODERATOR NOTE: General List
Discussion Policy Update", a few weeks back, stands. That is to say, all
non-beta Apple-related discussions are welcomed on this list.

Fifth, I ask that this particular thread, discussing the scope of list
discussions, be closed. I realize that, due to differences in time zones,
personal schedules, etc, many list members will not see this post,
requesting that this thread be closed, immediately. As a result, there will
doubtless be a few more posts to this thread. That's okay. Please do not
take it upon yourselves to admonish those who may appear to be disregarding
my request. Just trust that I am monitoring the threads and I will
determine if someone is disregarding my request for thread closure.

Sixth, in order to insure that this topic will not begin to threaten the
fabric of the list's integrity, those who continue to contribute to this
thread will be placed on moderated status.

Finally, please send any comments regarding this or any list policy to me,
off-list, at: mk...@ucla.edu.

Thank you all for being a part of this community.

Sincerely,

Mark

Re: Installing Windows on Mac Question

2015-09-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
There were certain 64-bit machines that couldn’t go to Yosemite because they
could only run a 32-bit kernel and 32-bit EFI or had non-discrete GPUs that
weren’t supported by 64-bit drivers. Hence you could well be able to run
64-bit Windows or another OS on a 2007 Mac, but not OS X. Obsolescence like
that is just the lay of the land where Macs are concerned, made worse by the
new yearly, hardware-dependent release cycles for OS X, now much as with iOS.

You can still buy Lion or Mountain Lion. You buy them from Apple’s archival
inventory and get a download code that you can use on the MAS to fetch the
installers. You have to call up Apple to make this happen, or possibly only
use the web store and not the Apple Store app.

There are 2 types of list moderators. Those who see it as their job to
help people solve problems and those who think it's their job to enforce
rules. You sound like that latter type.

What you will almost certainly end up with is a slightly less wide
ranging list with a very small clihe of regular contributors. But maybe
that's what you want.

You're going to have like a dozen people answering each others very
specific questions. Once in a while, one of them will forget themselves
and ask an IOS question. They'll thinkeither forget or they'll think
they are so much a part of the in crowd that they can get away with it.
Then you'll have to smack them down and there will be a huge fight. This
pattern will repeat itself every 6 months or so.

The only alternative to being a tyrannical list moderator is to do what
the moderators of this list have done. That does have it's drawbacks,
the primary one being the high traffic.

There is no perfect solution. Life is messy. Welcome to the planet earth.

Touch ID and purchasing things in the Apple online stores

2015-09-28 Thread Mary Otten
I am confused about the use of touch ID in places like the iBooks store, app
store or iTunes store. I thought I was set up for that. But I just purchased an
iBook. I hit the buy button and was prompted to sign in with my password. I put
my finger on the home button for touch ID, nothing happened. So I signed in
the usual way and the book was purchased. Now I don't have a problem signing
in. I have been doing it for a long time. But I am confused as to how this
touch ID thing is supposed to work. There must be some setting I am missing. Or
I just don't understand its operation.

Re: talking dashboard: the say ram script

2015-09-28 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
from what I've read memory is very hard to measure in the new system.
Not only do you have the usual virtual memory/swap but there is also now
compressed memory so what's free and used is even more murky. About Tech
has a brief explainer on compressed memory:

http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/fl/Understanding-Compressed-Memory-in-OS-X.htm

From terminal you can get a lot of stats by typing "vm_stat". You can
do a "man vm_stat" to get all the details on what those number mean.

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Todor Fassl
The real question is what works. Is there such a problem with people
posting IOS questions that the list is harmed somehow? Too much traffic?

People aren't going to get that they can't ask IOS questions here. If
you want to make a rule like that, it's going to be very difficult to
enforce. And enforcing the rule itself will cause problems. It makes a
lot of work forthe moderators, it makes for hard feelings, and frankly,
it tends to turn moderators into tyrants. Plus for several weeks now,
the amount of traffic on this list about the list itself has been a big
problem.

My opinion is that people should learn to press the delete key. If a
topic doesn't interest you, press the delete key. Learn some patience.
Learn some tolerance.

Hello all. I have an iMac late 2009 with Eue Site camera.

When using Google chrome it is constantly going to "chrome busy" and I have to

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app but the same thing keeps happening.
I have not yet installed the ChromeVox extension.

Any ideas as to how to correct this problem?

Thanks.

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Todor Fassl

I am guessing you never moderated a list before, right?

Samsung offers Optical Image Stablization on both

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi!

Thanks for the clarification those in the know. It does make sense, but
my point still stands. Since there is no policy document sent to you, or
located anywhere as far as I can see, the description should still be
changed to reflect that this is a list on which all Apple products can
be discussed. Otherwise, it's just going to be confusing for those
joining the list, since searching to find the thread is pure hell, and
that's if you actually know about the change.

It's fine that it's all become a list for all the products now, since
they are so closely merged at this point, but the description hasn't
even been changed to make new users aware of this. That just seems very
sloppy to me, seeing as you can change both name and description for
Google Groups. It doesn't really matter if the name stays the same, as
long as the description takes into account the merging between products.

That's my only concern.

Apple" list. That includes the watch iOS operating system OS X etc. it makes a good
deal of sense as the entire Apple line of products are all integrated and work seamlessly
with each other. That is their intent, and so this list takes questions regarding all
things Apple. There was a list devoted solely to the Mac OSx operating system, but that
has gone the way of the dinosaur. That's what happens when you don't stay current.

enough to have an older MacBook Pro given to me while I learn this
operating system. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that the older

Windows side my preferred screen reader is JAWS but I also have NVDA and
Window-Eyes installed. I would like to add right here that I really do not
want to make this a Mac versus PC conversation; as a blind computer I am
grateful that I have access to both.
 Question
I was considering acquiring both a new Windows 10 laptop as well as a new
MacBook Pro. But since I am not independently wealthy, I wondered if it
would not be more cost effective purchasing only the MacBook Pro and then
installing Windows on that system. I would like to know how well Windows
runs on the Mac and get an idea of the difficulty of actually
accomplishing this feat. Additionally, are there any recommended specs,
such as the amount of RAM or preferred processor, for this type of setup?
I am fairly competent with a Windows PC but still consider myself a novice

installing Windows on a Mac. Any suggestions and/or recommendations would

Hi!
Well, i might say something stupid now but this is my own personal preference

To me i really whish that if the iphone could be as small as the ipod touch

Ofcourse this will make braille writing nearly impossible but i never use that
so i don’t care much about it.
We don’t have grade 2 in swedish anymore and we don’t learn it for english
either so thats one of the reasons i don’t use braille keyboards.

Re: talking dashboard: the say ram script

That one has been broken since Yosemite. I meant to fix it, but other projects
kept coming up. Plus, from what I've read, ram is handled so differently in
Yosemite and onward that monitoring it isn't as important as it used to be.

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
A few weeks back, people were asking about posting anything related to Apple
accessibility since so many products are so linked nowadays. The reasoning was
that--with iTunes syncing, Handoff, keyboard commands on iOS, iCloud Drive
documents, and so on--all Apple products are so linked that it was too
restrictive to refuse messages about iOS/Apple TV/watchOS. The mods agreed, and
thus the list's topics expanded. I'm not saying this is good or bad, just
telling you why it happened.

Hi,
If you have an iPhone and dropbox, you can get the KNB reader app and it will
convert that image PDF into text.
Or, if you’d like to send it to me, unless it’s confidential information i can

spotify accessibility and some questions.

2015-09-28 Thread deedra waters
so i saw on applevis when i went looking for spotify advice/answers that a
developer of some sort had given a very very very brief summary of how to get
spotify working with accessibility. i’m going to write up here what i did to
get it to work right for me and some of what i noticed. I’m hoping someone more
talented then me can help me figure out some answers to things i can’t figure
out. note that some of my problems here are lack of the more finer points of
voiceover combine with the evilness of not being able to figure out all of the
keystrokes the spotify app has.

The article on applevis has a little script that they say will make spotify
launch. I would and hope that there is a way to set this to launch with
accessibility on startup. Maybe someone knows how to get this to happen? also
maybe someone knows of keystrokes with this app i’d appreciate the info. below
is my little 1-liner since i’m largely a command line user, i kind of….well
it’s probably ugly but it works…

—begin script——

#!/bin/bash
/Applications/Spotify.app//Contents/MacOS/Spotify —args
—force-renderer-accessibility > /dev/null2&1

—end—code—

The above script causes spotify to start with the accessibility stuff but it’s
very very ugly. However with some keyboard commands it could be much easier to
handle. I know that the author of the article on applevis gave some basic
keystrokes to handle search stuff but here’s what i’d like to see. for one i’d
like to see the roter (vo+u) work with this I dont know what it would take to
make this happen or even who i’d need to contact to make it work. It does
however seem that with the latest spotify release things are working a bit
smoother. for 2 i’d like a way to jump from frame to frame so that i could see
what is in what frame actually thinking on this that seems to be the biggest
problem for me.

I would be very very happy if someone knows a way to add things to playlists i
can’t figure this one out. I also dont know how to add things to the queue play
the queue or get spotify to add certain things so that i can have stuff that’s
stored locally such as the local files section of the monster of an html
document.:)

If anyone can help with these things i’d be greatful. It’s a rough thing for
someone to get used to, but it’s liveable and with some keystrokes and info it
would go easier.

Activity Monitor is a great app built into all Macs. Open it up, go to the
toolbar and then into the view group, and choose the memory button. Get out of
the toolbar and you can see not only a table of all your apps and how much
memory each uses, but stats on your memory as a whole.

Hey Chris. This may or may not help, but anyway, I've heard people in
other mailing lists having similar problems like this in iOS 9. Fortunately I'm
not one of those people, but anyway, one of the suggestions someone brought up
was to try resetting network settings, and for those people that fixed the
issue. I know you may be connected to multiple wifi accounts, but give that a
try.

Amadeus Pro Update On The Mac

2015-09-28 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

Just got a notification that I have 2 updates. One of them is Amadeus Pro. Has
anyone performed the update yet? With so many updates for the iOS 9 platform, I
don’t want to have any surprises, since the current version of Amadeus Pro is
working. Thanks for your advise.

Kind regards,
eileen

Re: iBooks with the Mac and iPhone6

2015-09-28 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Hi Eileen M,

I’ve been doing this same thing with my Mac Book & IPhone 6. It appears to me
that the page numbering is not in synch between the 2 devices. I think it has
to do with the fact that less material appears on the Iphone’s screen than what
the Mac Book can show. I have on the phone tried tapping on the go to page
button, but that just seems to do weird things to the screen and the way
reading the book behaves.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has a solution to this.

Subject: iBooks with the Mac and iPhone6

Hello Folks,

I decided to take the plunge and post this topic here. With so much discussion
about the appropriateness of subject matter this one involves both the Mac and
iOS device.

I have a textbook downloaded into iBooks on both my MacBook Air 2013 and my
iPhone6. Is there anyway to obtain a hand off effect between the 2 devices? I
mainly use iBooks on the Mac for better control of iBooks, but I need to
perform some exercises with it,so I opened the book in iBooks on my phone.
However, I needed to use the picker about 250 flicks to get to the page I
needed to view in order to have access to the directions. Is there a “Go To
Page” in the iPhone app so I don’t have to flick so much and to increase
efficiency? Is there a sync feature between the 2 versions that would import
the bookmarks and current page being viewed? This would be terrific to have the
2 versions of iBooks communicate between each other in order to expedite the
process. I look forward to your responses.

Kind regards,
Eileen

the phones easy to carry when out and about? Do they fit comfortably in

need to take it out of my pocket to use the touch screen. I have a transit

There are 2 types of list moderators. Those who see it as their job to
help people solve problems and those who think it's their job to enforce

Welcome to the planet earth.

strange to me, especially since we have moderators. The description
doesn't reflect iOS anywhere, though, and if both are allowed now
the description should probably be changed. The name is rather

Re: iBooks with the Mac and iPhone6

2015-09-28 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

Thanks for responding. I decided to Google it and came up with some results and
ideas. So here goes:

On the Mac, open iBooks and go to its preferences by pressing Command-comma.
2. Select the general tab with VO-space and stop interacting with it by
pressing VO-Shift-Up Arrow.
3. Tab a few times until you hear “Sync.” The next tab will be a checkbox.
Press VO-space on it. this checkbox is to “Sync bookmarks, highlights, and
collections across all devices.” That’s it for the Mac.

iOS:
1. Open settings-iBooks and flick until you hear VO say “Sync.” This is a
checkbox. Mine was not checked. Use VO-space to check it.
2. Close out the settings menu.

I opened iBooks on both the Mac and iPhone. I did find that the app on the
phone had a link to go back to 431. I did tap on the search button. The text
edit field accepted page numbers. The firs line of page 432 was read by VO. I
single finger double tap on it and I was moved to that page. I hope this helps.

Best,
Eileen

Hi!
Don't forget about ABBYY finereader for the mac. It is not very expensive and
it does a great job scanning images like your pdf file.

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Jamie Pauls
A of There was quite a lengthy thread not long ago about the fact that Apple
products are tending to blur. Many on the list felt that they should be able to
talk about various products since they are all used together. I don't know of
an email list that prohibits the discussion of any topic other than using the
Mac.

Re: other mac accessibility mailing list?

2015-09-28 Thread Phil Halton
Just recently, within the last few weeks, this question was answered by the
moderator Mark Taylor. This list is now and pretty much always has been and
"all things Apple" list. That includes the watch iOS operating system OS X etc.
it makes a good deal of sense as the entire Apple line of products are all
integrated and work seamlessly with each other. That is their intent, and so
this list takes questions regarding all things Apple. There was a list devoted
solely to the Mac OSx operating system, but that has gone the way of the
dinosaur. That's what happens when you don't stay current.

A few weeks back, people were asking about posting anything related to Apple
accessibility since so many products are so linked nowadays. The reasoning
was that--with iTunes syncing, Handoff, keyboard commands on iOS, iCloud
Drive documents, and so on--all Apple products are so linked that it was too
restrictive to refuse messages about iOS/Apple TV/watchOS. The mods agreed,
and thus the list's topics expanded. I'm not saying this is good or bad,
just telling you why it happened.
