choose services submenu, then folder actions setup. A dialog opens up and you

none to speak of with my native windows install and that is on five

If you can afford the new mac mini server edition, that gives you two

First, you won't be using Parallels. It's not accessible. You'll have to use
VMware fusion if you want a virtual machine or of course you can use Boot
Camp if you don't mind separating your Windows and Mac experience.
The biggest problem with VMware fusion is that most of my sighted friends
using Macs don't use it. It doesn't have nearly the ratings of Parallel and
except for accessibility doesn't seem to be of interest to people I know. So
getting help is sometimes challenging.
If you want your experience to be particularly snappy in windows, you'll
have to have at least three cores to dedicate to the Windows box.
Fortunately the Mac doesn't need so much.
I had mine on a Mac Air but it was pretty sluggish and crashed a lot. I
finally wen to a Macbook Pro with maximum specs and it's running quite well.
But that doesn't address your interest to do this on the cheap.
I think your copy of WindowEyes will run in the virtual machine with
Windows7 but check with them to be sure. NVDA certainly will of course.
be prepared for headaches though. You have to map some keys, resolve
whatever conflicts arise about hardware and applications etc. I've found it
to be pretty challenging at times. Reliability of help from the lists has
been hit and miss too.
Having said that, I'd probably do it again.

Your absolute best method is to go into the System Preferences, press on Startup Disks and see if the CD that you hope to boot from is listed there. If it is, VO-space on it then navigate over to the Restart button. If it's not there, then your CD is not bootable by your Mac. Holding down the Option key at startup will only give you the list of possible Startup Disks that this pane gives you while in System Preferences, with the added issue that it is not accessible. Just saying as I made the same mistake only a few days ago.

Re: A Voiceover settings questions

You can't. This is the VoiceOver cursor and helps partially or fully
sighted people who are working with you. It can also enable a partially
or fully sighted person to use VoiceOver or just help you out along the
way. As you move along the screen with a swipe or a single tap the box
shows what's selected at the time. Be it a cursor the box moves as you

I could not think for the life of me where in either the VO utility or system

Also, where do I check so that VO comes on automatically at startup?

Thanks.

I have created a guide over at

I should imagine however this will not work simply because there's no
sound by default unless you install the Bootcamp drivers and tools.

*Subject:* *OT: FW: GW Micro Announces Global Window-Eyes Initiative
for users of Microsoft Office*

Jan-14-2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fort Wayne, Indiana (January 14, 2014) - GW Micro, Inc.
(www.gwmicro.com http://www.gwmicro.comhttp://www.gwmicro.com) is
proud to make a revolutionary announcement. GW Micro and Microsoft
Corp. have partnered to make Window-Eyes available to users of
Microsoft Office at no cost. Window-Eyes is a screen reader that
enables people who are blind, visually impaired, or print disabled to
have full access to Windows PCs and makes the computer accessible via
speech and/or Braille.

To better deliver Window-Eyes to the people who need it most, GW
Micro and Microsoft have collaborated on this global initiative,
available in over 15 languages, to enable anyone using Microsoft
Office 2010 or later to also use Window-Eyes for free. Access to
technology is critical to people who are blind or visually impaired
in order to have the same opportunity to compete in the workplace. As
such, this initiative between GW Micro and Microsoft has the
potential to reduce barriers for millions of people who are blind or
visually impaired around the world.

As the population ages, technologies like Window-Eyes will become
more and more important as the number of people with age-related
macular degeneration and other retinal degenerative diseases
increases. This significant change in the way we are doing business
reflects the changing perception of accessibility and also technology
in general. Rather than wait for the world to change, Microsoft and
GW Micro are leading the way, said Dan Weirich, Vice President of
Sales and Marketing for GW Micro. Weirich believes this technology
can help millions of people gain access to their PC, and that
providing it free of charge will open a whole new world of assistive
technology to many people.

In light of the rapidly changing face of technology and specifically,
the changing face of assistive technology, the combined efforts of GW
Micro and Microsoft have the goal of providing accessibility to
people who are blind and visually impaired for the long term.

Microsoft continues to take accessibility seriously. “By partnering
with GW Micro in this endeavor we are demonstrating Microsoft’s
ongoing commitment to provide all of our customers with the
technology and tools to help each person be productive in both their
work and personal lives.” said Rob Sinclair, Chief Accessibility
Officer for Microsoft.

Eligible customers, using Microsoft Office 2010 or higher, will be
able to download a full version of Window-Eyes starting today at
www.WindowEyesForOffice.com
http://www.WindowEyesForOffice.comhttp://www.WindowEyesForOffice.com.
The website provides download instructions as well as additional
details about this offer.

GW Micro, Inc. (www.gwmicro.com

pioneer in the adaptive technology industry since 1990, and continues
to lead with innovative, customer driven solutions.

Re: Looks like Windows is also heading toward full screen reader built in

2014-01-14 Thread Chris H

Hi
Window-Eyes can be used across the board, just that so long as Office
2010 or later is installed you can use Window-Eyes minus the 30 minute
demonstration mode, in other words you can use a fully functional copy
of Window-Eyes to be used across the board just by installing Office
2010 or later on your system.

Allowing it to work with only one piece of software in no way to my mind
translates into built in speech. That means one thing, you turn on an
item and find if you require it, speech across the board. Either that
or you turn on the program as an extra and find speech across the
board. No less at least to me.

Which amount do I trust and base my ability to purchase more apps, books, or

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

OOkay, let me see if I can remember it all. What you get it set up it's simple as
pie. First, turn Wi-Fi on on your iPhone. Then turn Bluetooth on. Then go to
personal hotspot and settings, you will notice several choices after you've
turned it on. One of the choices is Wi-Fi, and that's the one I did. Now there is
this horrible code you have to put in to your Mac. It is on your iPhone screen and
you have to do it character by character.

Go in to the extras menu with the voiceover keys and the letter M twice. Then VO
left or right arrow until you get to Wi-Fi. Press the VO space on that. Then you
have to go down until your Mac says Owner's iPhone and choose that. Then you have to
get the choices and type in that awful code. From now on you have a network that
says Owner's iPhone so that if you don't Internet Wi-Fi your iPhone can let you use
your cellular data minutes. I have a lot of them so it's not a problem. Now you can
use Safari on your computer and send emails on your computer. You ask why can't you
just use your iPho? Well, if you have some files to attach like I did you can
use your to send them just like any other Wi-Fi. It's fast, too if your cell
connection is good.

mouse pointer is focused somewhere inside of the Windows window. Is there a
trick I'm missing? Control-command and coomand-g both fail to set focus on
Windows, but control-command does let me switch back to the Mac. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.

type mount it will look a little like this

sandras-MacBook-Air:MacOS sandra$ mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
sandras-MacBook-Air:MacOS sandra$
okay, since i don't have a cd-rom drive on the mba it is not being
shown, but if you can lay the dvd in your mac, and type mount i can
tell you which drive too use.
Anyways, after you have found the right drive you will type something like this
dd if=dev/dvd/path/ of=/place/for/the/new.iso
your drive will start up, and run for a few minutes, after that is
outta the way, you have your brand new image where you placed it , lay
it on an usb or something like that.
If you are using vmware you should be fine from here. If that aint
working out just write again

said I'd have to wait until someone could email me back. I asked if there was
anyone who could just answer me over the phone, and was told that if I wanted
phone support I could buy a single incident support request for $30… That's
half of what I just paid for the entire Fusion program! So now, even though I
haven't even started using Fusion due to their own website/program not working,
I'm waiting for an email from an engineer which will, I strongly suspect based
on my experience so far, be some form letter that may or may not answer my
question. I could see this if I'd been using the program successfully and just
had questions, but I can't use it at all and just want to get started. This is
ridiculous, and I really wish there was another product I could

use instead. Unfortunately, Fusion seems to be the only accessible choice, so
let's just hope I can get this answered relatively soon.

Teresa Cochran vegaspipistre...@gmail.com Nov 12 01:58PM -0800

Admittedly, yes, I’m also using a keyboard. My opinion is that you’ll probably
have to do quite a lot of customizing to use a Braille display as a primary
keyboard.

For switching apps, I’d probably map a braille keystroke to VO-applications
list. (VO-f1 twice quickly)I don’t think there’s an easy way to map one to

what the braille keyboard command is for going to the menu and using left and
right arrows. I found that useful when I was somewhat away from my computer. On
my Braille Edge, it has some keys on it that will bring up Spotlight and the
menus and the dock. That may help some. For instance, space dd sign will bring
up the dock. Space question mark will let you interact and space low j will
stop interacting. Do you have a list of braille key commands that are already
in place?

Teresa Cochran vegaspipistre...@gmail.com Nov 12 03:18PM -0800

It’s s-chord (dots 2-3-4-space). I just use the panning keys to display

item I want. sometimes this doesn’t work, and I have to use dot 4-chord and dot

Hi Kristeen, Teresa and the rest. The workaround I did for single-keystroke app
switching was to write two scripts to simulate command-tab and
command-shift-tab respectively. Then I assigned running of the scripts to focus
commands (I used 12-chord and 45-chord). The scripts had one line each:
Tell application System Events to keystroke tab using command down

Tell application System Events to keystroke tab using {command down shift

I was a big fan of web spots prior to Mountain Lion than MT. Lion messed them all up. They seem to be working again in the latest version of safari in Mt. Lion. On some sites they are fantastic and work perfectly, on other's not so much. Web spots are a very quick way to navigate a web page that you visit frequently and jump from one spot on the page to another. You can pretty much set a web spot anywhere, I have used them to mark links headings and even text if I am reading something that is long and want to come back to the page and pick up reading where I left off. To set a web spot all you have to do is hit VO command shift right bracket and it sets a web spot where you are. You can set as many as you like and use VO command right and left bracket to jump from one to the next give it a try and you will probably love them. Not sure how they work in Mavericks as I haven't updated and don't plan to do so any time soon as it seems like Mavericks is loaded with issues all over

the place.

Re: Feature Request: iCloud Syncing of VoiceOver Preferences

2013-10-31 Thread Chris H
Unless I am misunderstanding I can't see this going to work. VoiceOver
uses different voices on both iOS and Mac. So if they are going to
implement this on the mac then it will have to work across macs only.
VoiceOver settings are already synced to iCloud as part of documents and
data. In my experience when restoring my iPhone 4s from an iCloud backup
made on the iPhone 4, all my VoiceOver settings came across except for
the voice, but that's a different matter altogether.

Dear Apple Accessibility Team,

With such deep integration of iCloud with so many aspects of iOS and OS X, it's
surprising that VoiceOver has so far been left out. Many VoiceOver users own
multiple Apple devices, and would benefit greatly from being able to sync
VoiceOver preferences across all their devices.

Currently, for Mac, there is the portable preferences feature. Though no doubt
a good idea at the time, this is now a little out dated and clunky, requiring a
user to carry around a USB flash drive to plug into each mac, it also seems to
have troubles syncing preferences in multiple directions, at least in my
experience. I've also tried exporting my VoiceOver preferences to a third party
syncing service (Dropbox), but this also does not seem to work smoothly. It
doesn't seem to export or import my pronunciation and keyboard commander
preferences, for example.

iCloud seems like the perfect solution for this problem. It could offer
seamless syncing of VoiceOver preferences across multiple Apple devices,
without needing to carry around the same portable flash drive. It could offer
syncing between Macs, between iOS devices and even between Macs and iOS devices
so far as the same preferences were applicable.

I hope you consider this for a future update to VoiceOver and both iOS and OS X.

Thank you for all your great work.

Kind regards,
Nic

Vo f8 then press command 3 to switch to the speech pain of the utility.
I selected Karen as my default voice but you can also have different
voices for different things in VoiceOver. Now to change the voice for
the clock go to System Preferences, Date and Time and select the clock
tab. Check the announce time check box and there will be a button there
to customize the voice for that. Now to change the voice overall for the
system go to System Preferences, Dictation and Speech and select the

With the USB installer, the install was smooth, once I booted into it.

However, with the recovery partition, the installer required me to sign into my
Apple account. First, when the sign in dialog came up, I had to use the Window
chooser to get into the Window. But, I would navigate to the user name and
password section, but, I couldn’t type there. The thing that solved this seems
strange, but, it worked. Using VoiceOver commands, I navigated to the Forgot
button, pressed it, and, it then let me type in my credentials. Not sure why
that worked, but, it’s what happened to me.

Yes, delete the Gmail account on your computer, and no you do not need

suggestin using the other option when adding a new account. It would

what I believe to be a webmail account. After selecting other choose add

Re: Would appreciate knowing if I can upload n audio file to Facebook

2013-08-03 Thread Chris H
No you cannot upload audio directly to Facebook but you can share links
to the audio file from any source such as Dropbox or Sendspace.

I played around with both the mobile site on my MacBook, and the iPHone app, and cannot

the file before hitting that button.
Thank you.

Re: Trouble with win seven, bootcamp, and mac book air...

2013-08-02 Thread Chris H

Yes that's incorrect both 32 and 64 bit are supported.

On 02/08/2013 16:52, Phil Halton wrote:

hmmm I thought bootcamp only supported windows 64bit. When I
installed win7 Home Premium on my iMac, I first downloaded the
bootcamp drivers before doing the install so I'd have them ready at
hand. Then I installed windows7 64bit and the ddrivers at the end of
the process and it worked fine. I don't know why, I thought that you
could only install 64 bit versions of windows, but I'm sure that must
be wrong.

Hi everybody. Perhaps somebody has gone through this and can shed some
light on what might be going on... I've searched apple forums etc but
haven't found a solution yet...

My girlfriend needs windows on her mac book air for work so I
installed win seven Ultimate 32 bit after creating the required
partition in the bootcamp utility in mountain lion.

When I instruct the bootcamp utility to download the windows support
software, I get the dialogue box saying that the download is in
progress. That's where it ends though because it just seems stuck. I
even let it sit overnight and the same dialogue box was still there
the next morning. There is no status bar etc that is visible to
voiceover, none that I can find at least.

So, I went on the apple site and downloaded the two latest 32 bit
versions of the package but neither will install. I get an error
message when I run setup.exe that says that it's not compatible with
this machine. We're not running win seven 64 bit either so that is not
the issue.

I grabbed the bootcamp folder off of my old snow lepeard dvd and while
that seems to install correctly, (I get the last dialogue box with the
finish button then the message saying that I need to restart the
computer), none of the drivers load after rebooting and bootcamp is
not in the notifications area.

When I go into device manager, it doesn't look like any of the apple
and other specific drivers have loaded because I only see generic
drivers under things like keyboard, network adapters etc.

This is my first time installing windows via bootcamp on an air and my
first time doing it on a mac with mountain lion. I've done this on
five different macs over the past few years with no trouble but now I
am at a loss as to what's going on here...

Thoughts?

Thanks for any tips you guys might have!

Cameron.

Re: alva?

Can't help but I was considering an Alva until I heard how good the
Focus Blue is as a future Braille display.
