rebuilding a mailbox in Apple Mail

2022-05-23 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi. I’m not sure when this happened, but I noticed some of my emails had
disappeared from my inbox sometime last week from my Mac and iPhone in the Mail
app. My inbox has both an AT email account with Yahoo and a Gmail account. I
had a lot more messages from Yahoo in my inbox before and those messages are
now missing. I did a google search for how to recover missing emails and found
out you can synchronize accounts in Mail or rebuild the mailbox. I synchronized
all the accounts first, but that didn’t work. If I rebuild my inbox in mail,
will this recover all the email messages I’m missing from my inbox? Will this
delete anything? Can you rebuild a mailbox account on iPhone or just the Mac?
Thanks.
Katie

I’ll try Numbers again this week and let you know if I have any other questions

Hi Jonathan. Thanks for your reply. I wasn’t sure if anyone on the list saw my
message since I sent it earlier last week.
That’s good you can save a Numbers file to Dropbox. How do you rename a
template file in Numbers? I couldn’t figure this out when I tried the app on my
phone back in April. Also how do you delete a Numbers template or spreadsheet
that you no longer need?
Thanks.

questions about using the Numbers app on iPhone

2020-06-18 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone.
At the end of February, I upgraded from the iPhone 5S to an iPhone 11. I’ve
loved using it ever since, it works great!

I checked out the Numbers application on my iPhone a couple months ago for the
first time. It’s kind of similar to Excel and seems pretty straight forward to
use. I just have some questions about using the app with Voiceover.

I will be using Numbers for my time sheet info at work. I was wondering if
there’s a way you can rename a template or save a template with a different
name each time in the app with Voiceover? I figured out how to edit information
and can type in the different cells fine after I double tap to edit something.
Is there an option for changing the name of a spread sheet? Also, can you
transfer Numbers files to Dropbox with an iPhone? I don’t have Numbers on my
Mac currently. My computer is too old to upgrade to Mac OS Catalina. So I’ll
have to use this app on my iPhone for now until I get a new computer.
Thanks for your help.

Re: speaking rate for vo on a Mac

2020-01-07 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Lorie. If you want to slow the speech down without going into the Voiceover
Utility, hold down the command and VO keys and press the left or right arrow
until Alex says speaking rate. You can adjust the rate of the voice by holding
down the command and VO keys and hitting down or up arrow to increase or
decrease the speech rate. This is a quick way to adjust the speech settings for
Voiceover like the voice and intonation on the fly.
Hope that helps.
Thanks.

Re: Safari web experience getting less and less satisfying

2019-04-27 Thread Katie Zodrow
I haven't noticed too many problems with using Safari recently on my iPhone.
Sometimes, I might not always be in the correct form field, but that doesn't
happen to often. When I'm on my Mac and go to different websites, sometimes the
site takes forever to load. If I'm trying to read an article, Voiceover says
Safari busy because it's still loading the page. I'm using an older Mac, so
that might be the problem. I'm not sure. Other than that, I haven't had
problems using Safari on either device.

Re: missing onscreen keyboard on iPhone

2018-12-14 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Jonathan. This happened to me also at the beginning of December over the
weekend, and it was pretty frustrating when I couldn't dictate or type on my
phone with the on screen keyboard. It was like my phone thought I was still
connected to Bluetooth with my braille display even though the display was
already turned off. Try switching Bluetooth off and then back on and see if
that helps. If that doesn't work, try turning Bluetooth off and do a soft reset
on your phone. When I had this problem, I eventually went to the Apple Store on
Monday and they were able to reset my phone. None of my apps or data was erased
and I did a back up beforehand just in case that might happen. The keyboard
magically reappeared again after they turned off Bluetooth and reset it.
Hope that helps.

Hi Donna.
Yes, I got the same news on the VarioUltra list that Baum USA would be closing
this afternoon. Very sad news for sure.  The VarioUltra has been one of the
best and most reliable braille displays I have ever used. I use it all the time
at work and it's great with my iPhone too. Now I'm wondering what will happen
if this display will still be supported in the future? Guess we'll have to wait

Re: Get rid of mission control from f10 key.

2018-01-09 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi. Thanks for the info for disabling keyboard shortcuts with Mission Control.
I never knew what this app was for because I couldn’t use it with Voiceover. I
just selected the dash key instead of control down or up arrow to activate
Mission Control. This app is very annoying and pops up at the wrong time when
I’m trying to look at a document or PDF.
Hopefully Mission Control won’t appear as often in the future now when I’m
reading a document. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Zoe. Its been a long time since I’ve seen you on the Mac Visionaries list.
Wow! I’m so sorry to hear about your scabies illness, and that its gotten
progressively worse. I had never heard about this disease until your email and
afterwards, I looked up more info about it on wikipedia. Thank you for sharing
your story and letting me and the other listers know why you decided to leave
the group.
I wish you the best in fighting this illness, and pray for you to have a speedy

Interesting. Thanks for the info Eric. Hopefully this issue can get fixed so
Voiceover announces what you're actually clicking on in the next version. This
hasn't happened to me before. I don't normally need to route the mouse to the

I went to a community college too for my first semester of college after I
graduated high school. I took a couple classes during the fall semester
before I started attending Berklee in Boston for the spring semester. Its a
great way to transition from high school to college life and classes before you
attend a four year college. Taking your general ed classes at a community
college is much cheaper anyway. I took a lot of my general education classes
at community college during the summer.

Hi, Donna. I worked with my trainer on the VarioUltra this morning. I told him
the problem I had with opening documents from my flash drive. I deleted the
file last night from the drive and then pasted it back on the drive from
Dropbox this morning. I connected the USB stick and tried opening the file
again. Good news, it worked without any problem! I'm not sure why it didn't
work before, but I'm glad I can open .docx files ok now.

Hi, David. I’ve also heard the same statistic for a long time that 70 percent

This blind Apple engineer is transforming the tech world at only 22

Apple engineer Jordyn Castor has never been one for limitations.

She was born 15 weeks early, weighing just under two pounds. Her
grandfather could hold her in the palm of his hand, and could even slide
his wedding ring along her arm and over her shoulder. Doctors said she had
 a slim chance of survival.

It was Castor's first brush with limited expectations — and also the first
 time she shattered them.

Castor, now 22, has been blind since birth, a result of her early
delivery. But throughout childhood, her parents encouraged her to defy
expectations of people with disabilities, motivating her to be
 adventurous, hands-on and insatiably curious.

It was that spirit that led to her interact with technology, whether it
was the desktop computer her family bought when she was in second grade,
or the classroom computer teachers encouraged her to use in school.

<>"I could help make technology more accessible for blind users."
She says the adults in her life would often hand her a gadget, telling her
to figure it out and show them how to use it. And she would.

"I realized then I could code on the computer to have it fulfill the tasks
I wanted it to," says Castor, whose current work focuses on enhancing
features like VoiceOver for blind Apple users. "I came to realize that
with my knowledge of computers and technology, I could help change the
 world for people with disabilities.

"I could help make technology more accessible for blind users."

Bringing a personal perspective to Apple innovation

There's an often overlooked component of "diversity" in workplace
initiatives — the need to include the perspectives of people with
 disabilities.

Keeping tabs on the needs of the blind and low-vision community is a key
component of Apple's innovation in accessibility. Castor is proof of how
much that can strengthen a company.

She was a college student at Michigan State University when she was first
introduced to Apple at a Minneapolis job fair in 2015. Castor went to the
gathering of employers, already knowing the tech giant would be there —
 and she was nervous.

"You aren't going to know unless you try," she thought. "You aren't going
to know unless you talk to them ... so go."

Hi, Donna.

Yes, I’ve been learning to use the VarioUltra since May and love it! :-) its
the best braille display for me so far. I think its great you can just connect
a device like your phone via bluetooth and it works once the pairing is
successfully connected. I can also text or email people with just my iphone and
the braille display, so that’s awesome I don’t always need to constantly use
dictation. Its really cool that you can just charge the device with a USB cable
too instead of carrying around a 12 volt charger. The only problem I have
sometimes is opening documents. Yesterday, I tried opening a couple files with
the USB stick connected to the device. They were in .docx format, an every time
I’d press the navistick to open the file, I would get a warning that said the
file could not be opened. Really strange. The VU is the lightest and smallest
display I’ve ever seen compared to my old Braille Lite 40 and the BrailleNote
MPower. Those were the 2 previous notetakers I used with braille displays. I’ll
be getting some more training again with the VU in a couple days, so hopefully

2016-07-12 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Donna and Scott. I thought I would chime in too.

Yes, you're right about Apple starting accessibility over 30 years ago, even
before we had voiceover and the mac. It sounds like my experience is somewhat
similar to yours, even though I was born a few years later and I started using
computers and technology at an earlier age. My dad was more of a computer and
tech guy too, but both my parents used the computer often at home and at work.

I grew up during the 1980s and 90s. I have an older sister so I was the
youngest and the only blind person in my family. I was born in Ohio 3 months
premature and have been blind since birth. My family moved to the Chicago
suburbs when I was 2, which is where I grew up. I lived in that area for 18
years until I was 20. My family has always been very encouraging and
supportive. They wanted to give me the best education possible, so I was
mainstreamed in public schools from age 3 to high school. The elementary school
I attended was a few miles away in another city from where we lived, but they
had a great Special Ed program with a resource room for all the kids with
blindness and other disabilities. I would go there if I wasn’t with the regular
classroom teacher during part of the day like for Reading or Math. The vision
teacher in my resource room and the rest of the staff at the school were all
great! Besides my parents helping me learn and encouraging me to be
independent, The school provided all the extra services I needed back then like
reading Braille, O and M skills, and basic daily living skills. I still use
braille often, and that skill along with the others are very important for
employment and being independent. In middle and high school, I worked with an
itinerant teacher for an hour and was in regular classes with the sighted
students the rest of the day.

one of the first computers I used in elementary school was the Apple II E with
that robotic sounding Echo speech synthesizer. The Alex voice and synthesized
speech have come a long way since then!! :-) I remember when I was about four
and five years old and pressing different keys on the Apple 2 keyboard. I
thought it was really cool how the Echo synthesizer would pronounce everything,
and that you could change the speech rate and pitch of the voice. It would
always sound really funny talking in a really high or low pitch!

When I was in first grade, my parents bought an Apple II GS computer. my sister
and I used to play a lot of games on it and some of them had speech using the
Echo synthesizer so I could play them myself. I remember using the old word
processing programs too like Braille Edit and another one called ProWord
ProBraille in middle and high school. Everything was all on 3.5 inch floppy
disc back then, or they were on those bigger 5 and 1/4 inch diskettes. During
most of my elementary school years, my mom worked at a high school in a
resource room. She worked as a teacher assistant to the main resource teacher
preparing materials in Braille for the blind and visually impaired students.
When she would put handouts and other information in Braille for me or the high
school students, she would normally use either BrailleEdit or another program
called Bex. I remember my mom taught me how to use the BrailleEdit software for
word processing. You had to use three different 5.25 inch disks just to use the
program, and they had to be used in a certain order so the program could work
correctly. We had the Apple II GS computer until my junior year of high school.
I got a desktop PC with Windows 98 and JAWS after that. My parents wanted me to
get my own computer before I started college.

I used a Mac computer for the first time in the summer of 2000 after my first
semester of college and learned outSPOKEN. I attended Berklee College of Music
in Boston from 2000 to 2004, and almost everyone was using the Mac OS. For a
couple of my music tech classes, I used outSPOKEN when I was learning Digital
Performer and ProTools. I still used the Windows platform most of the time from
1998 until 2013, then I decided to switch back over to the Mac. I had worked
in a couple call centers as a telephone reservations sales agent for 6 years,
and wanted to get back into the entertainment industry doing audio production
work and music again. I majored in Music Production and Engineering in college,
and wanted to get back into a career I enjoy and am passionate about . Now, I
do just about everything with the Mac and my iPhone. I received the new
VarioUltra braille display earlier this year, and use that device with the
iphone or when I’m at work and don’t want to use speech.

I can’t believe how far we’ve come with technology since the 1980’s! Back then,
everything was so huge and bulky 30 years ago. Now the size of everything has
drastically shrunk down and gotten much smaller. It will be interesting to see
what technology changes happen during the next 30 to 40

Apple doing awesome work. I had no idea there were would be so many innovations
for accessibility this fall with enhancing VoiceOver features. That's great!
Thanks for sharing this.

That's great! I'm glad you're looking into getting a used Mac. Then you can
continue learning the OS some more on your days off work and you probably

2016-07-06 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hey Arnold.
I'm surprised you didn't rent a Mac for 30 days just to try it out. You
could've gone to a computer rental place and asked if you could rent a Mac. I
think that would've been a lot cheaper than going to the Apple Store. I did
that three years ago and rented from a computer place in Burbank California. I
didn't even go to the Apple Store to do a contract thing. I just wanted to
learn and try out Mac OS X to see if I'd like it. I rented from the computer
place for five months, and that's how long it took me to learn voiceover and
some of the applications like text Edit, GarageBand, Safari, and using the
finder. I mainly use the Mac for everything now, and rarely ever use a Windows
PC.
I'm glad you gave it a shot though. Hopefully next time you can try using one
for 30 days to see if you like it.

2016-05-12 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Donna.
I went on Apple's site too earlier this afternoon and checked out some of the
accessibility products. That's really cool Apple is offering this now. Yes,
that's too bad they aren't selling the Baum Braille displays yet. I just got my
VarioUltra 40 Braille display in March. My counselor from Department of rehab
in California purchased this for me, and I just started getting training on it
this week.

Re: [Bulk] still no new message sound in Mail

2015-12-10 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. I just installed the latest update for El Capitan. Good news,
Apple fixed that bug in mail. I wasn’t getting any sound at all when new
messages would arrive. Now, the new mail sound finally works with this update.
Yay! Just wanted to let you guys know.

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] [Bulk] still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-29 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, John its Katie. I tried using the glass sound effect when I checked for new
mail 2 days ago, and nothing happened. Then I went back to the new mail sound
and when I check for new messages, I still don’t hear anything. I’m having no
luck at this. In mail preferences in the general tab, I have the checkbox
checked for play sounds for other mail actions. In the notification center, I
have alerts and sounds checked for the mail app. The notification center is
something new I haven’t seen on my Mac before since I upgraded from Snow
Leopard. I’m not sure why this isn’t working.
Do you have any other ideas? Should I have someone at the Apple store look at
my Mac again?
Thanks.

Hi, Mark and George. That’s exactly what happens to me with Mail too. I get the
swishing send mail sound but no new mail sound when I receive messages. All the
other sound effects and Voiceover work fine on my Mac.
I guess there’s a few of us that have this problem besides me. I’m glad I’m not

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-26 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, John. Normally I have the new message sound selected in Mail, but I changed
the sound effect to glass instead. I checked the box after that when it said
select ellipsis and closed out of mail preferences. I sent a test email to
myself and thought the glass sound was going to work, but nothing happened when
I got the email. Should I go back to the default mail sound or select a
different sound?
Thanks.

still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-25 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. I just updated to OS 10.11.1 today. I’m still not getting any new
message sound when I receive something in Mail. I thought Apple was going to
fix this. I decided for now to just get alerts for mail in notification center
so I'll know when I get new email for now. Has anyone else had this problem
after they updated?
I hope the next update Apple releases has that mail sound fixed.
Katie

Re: [Bulk] Re: still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-25 Thread Katie Zodrow
Oh good. I thought I was the only one that had this problem. I went into
preferences also, and checked and unchecked the same box about playing other
mail sounds. I checked that box again, and no sound plays when I receive mail.
Its weird this keeps happening. This never happened when I was onSnow Leopard.
That would be awesome if someone could report this issue to Apple.

OK I’ll check that. Thanks.

BTW, I didn’t realize Chris Blouch’s name was accidentally in my address book

problem with mail sounds on my Mac

2015-10-21 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone.. I’ve been using El Capitan since I got my Mac fixed yesterday. I
was having problems with logging in when I entered my password, but I got that
fixed at the Apple store yesterday. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard. I really
like the new operating system so far, but I have a small problem that’s kind of
annoying. The Mail app is very different to navigate compared to when I used OS
10.6.8, but I’m getting used to it. I have to interact a couple more times in
different tables compared to what I’m used to. The only problem I have is I’m
not getting a new message alert sound when I get new email. I tried checking
for new messages and I don’t hear anything either. When I send a message, it
does the swooshing sound like before, but nothing when I receive email. All the
other sounds work on my Mac fine, but I’m not sure why this isn’t working.
Can you please help me fix this?
Thanks.
Katie

Re: [Bulk] more on VarioUltra

2015-03-11 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Donna. Thanks for the update about VarioUltra. I read the discussion about
this yesterday. I'd love to get my hands on one to see what it looks like. Wish
I went to CSUN last week, but I was too busy. I emailed David Bradburn back in
November to order the VarioUltra 40. Unfortunately, I don't think I can afford
to purchase it myself, but hopefully I'll get a case opened again with
department of rehab in California by the end of this month. It would be awesome
if my counselor can purchase this for me.
How did you like using VarioUltra at the conference?
Katie

On Mar 11, 2015, at 6:57 AM, Donna Goodin wrote:

 Hi all,

Just passing along my latest communication from Baum, this time from David
Bradburn of Baum USA. He says that the back order issue should be resolved
by the end of this month. He also writes the following regarding the
hardware issues that Mika asked about yesterday:

  3. As for the USB port and NaviStick cap issues you reference, both
 issues have been addressed.
 a. In the case of the3 USB port, the connection has been redesigned to
be stronger. All new VarioUltra units in production feature this new design
and we have a stock of replacement USB boards to use in the event any
customers with older units ever have an issue.
 b. The NaviStick cap can come off in certain situations, though I am
only aware of 3 people who have been affected by it. The cap connection point
was previously square in shape while the connection on the VarioUltra that it
attached to was circular in shape. The cap connector has now been redesigned
to be circular as well, resulting in a tighter, more secure fit.

 I hope this is helpful.
 Cheers,
 Donna

learning to encode files to DAISY format

2013-06-20 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. I sent this email last week, but I haven't received any
responses. I hope someone can help me with this or has suggestions.

I hope this isn't to off topic. I'm planning on working at a recording studio
in Northridge California soon. They produce video descriptions
for TV networks, documentaries, online music videos and have worked on adding
description to educational videos for classrooms. They will also be working
on a proposal to get a contract for recording books and putting them in DAISY
format for the NLS which should start this fall if everything goes well.
I'm trying to figure out what the best software is for converting and encoding
audio files to DAISY format. I went on wikipedia last night to learn what
DAISY is and also browsed
www.daisy.org
. When I looked at the links for production and conversion tools, there's
plenty of different software that you can download. I wasn't sure which software
to look at that works well for encoding audio books for navigation and
converting them into DAISY format. It looks like some of this software also
works
on Mac as well as Windows. I'm curious if the Mac versions are accessible with
Voiceover.
Any help I can get on this would be very appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: A Look at ProTools Part 1 has been uploaded

2013-06-17 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Chris. Thanks for posting these podcasts about learning ProTools using
Voiceover. I listened to part 1 of Kevin Reeves tutorial on PT a couple
weeks ago and it was excellent! The more I can learn about using PT the
better.

I'll listen to your first episode tomorrow.
By the way, I listened to your song Crayons on the Floor a few weeks ago and
it was very beautiful! The only processing I would edit out is some of the
auto tune on the vocals.

Subject: A Look at ProTools Part 1 has been uploaded

Good morning, or evening everyone, depending on where you're located.

In the past, there has been a lot of discussion both on and off list about
the accessibility and use of ProTools from an accessibility standpoint
with Voiceover. I've been asked to appear on certain podcasts and then
due to things that were completely out of my control, I was unable to
participate in those submitions. This is going to be going out to a lot
of places. I'm hoping to put this link out on my Twitter, as well as my
Facebook,

@gilland_chris

http://www.facebook.com/christopher.gilland

As well as my own personal podcast:

http://www.clgpodcast.net

This furthermore is in the process of being approved for an Applevis
submition.

I plan to make this series as in depth as I possibly can make it, and as
thorough as I can possibly make it as well. We'll be talking about the
use of ProTools, how to interact with the application using Voiceover,
certain work arounds to things that might not be the most accessibly
intuitive, as well as we'll also be learning about some crucially
important sound production techniques/skills that you must be able to
master in order to have the most optymal benefit from ProTools. This is
really big guys, as I know a lot of you all have wanted me to do this for
quite some time, and now, I'm finally getting the time to do so. Here's
what I am going to say as far as other podcast interviews. Let's wait,
and let me get this whole series finished and out to you guys, and then
once I've finished up the series, if at that point, you want to interview
me, we'll talk. I'm doing it this way, so that you'll up front have a
working idea of my knowledge, as well as my style in how I present things.

So all this being said, here is the link to Part 1. This recording runs
just over half an hour. I can't promise you that all the recordings are
going to be this short, but this one will be. Let's get some feedback.
If you all want me to continue the series after hearing this, I'd be more
than happy to! I will admit that Kevin Reeves who is in the blind
community has done an absolutely fantastic! couple of mp3 files which are
quite in depth, however some people have said that they didn't really like
his style. I don't really know why that is, as I personally thought it
was brilliant! but, whatever. Each is to their own. The other thing is,
he only did maybe about 3 files all total. What I! plan to do, is make
this into a continuing series, and really get very serious about really
showing you all the true power of this software. I'm not only gonna cover
the basics, but hopefully, over time, as the recordings progress, and we
build off what you already know, we can actually begin to dive into more
advanced parts of the program.

You all are gonna be a huge factor in what things I show you in these
files. A lot of it will be crutial that I show you, but if there is
anything specific that you want for me to show, please let me know, and
I'll see what I can do.

OK. So, here we go! Here's the link for part 1.

http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/wfvhz7

You guys let me know what you think, and we'll go from there.

Chris.

flash player issues

Hi, everyone. I tried going onto you tube today and yesterday with Safari. I
tried playing a couple videos with flash player, but nothing happens. The

another Mac with Mountain Lion. Is anyone having problems playing videos with
flash? This is very strange. The flash player seemed to work fine for me on

cycle region and selecting tracks in Garage Band

2013-03-22 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. So far, I've been having fun learning to use Garage Band. I've
been creating a project with this software the past few days this week. I have
50 bars of drum tracks recorded so far in my song. About half the measures are
drum loops. For the last section of the piece, I wanted to select the first 24
bars of the song and wanted to know how to do that without moving the regions.
There are 3 different drum loops I used for this 2 of these are each 8 measures
long, 1 is 6 measures long and the last loop is 2 measures long. How do I
select these tracks?
I also recorded a shaker track on the keyboard without turning on the cycle
region. I want to record another drum track on the keyboard and overdub parts
on the same track for each drum part I'm playing along with that shaker part.
Since I didn't turn cycle region on before, How do I do this? I don't want to
have cycle region start playing from the beginning of the song.
Thanks for your help.

Hi everybody! I'm selling my mint condition mac book pro which was
upgraded by Apple. This would be a killer rig for pro tools, garage
band, logic, sonar with windows via bootcamp, or just every day
general computing and entertainment! Details/specs below... I always
ship with tracking and full insurance. I only accept payment via pay
pal and will only ship to a confirmed address in the USA, Canada, the
UK, or Europe. Please write me off list if interested.

The machine has Applecare until November 30, 2014. It's in
mint condision,
has no issues, and has only seen lite use in my smoke free home. I had
Apple upgrade it with a 512gb solid state hard drive and 8gb of ddr3
ram. It was done by Apple with Apple supplied hardware, (unlike a lot
of upgraded mbps around on e bay and other places that someone did
with inferior ssds etc.) All in all it was a bit over $3500.

Includes world wide power supply, pouch style protective case,
OSX/iLife dvds, documentation, and a bootable copy of OSX Mountain
Lion on a thumb drive. I'll reformat the machine and do a fresh
install of Mountain Lion before shipping.

adjusting system volume without going to status menu

2013-03-19 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. When I've wanted to listen to a webstream or podcast, sometimes
I'd like to adjust the system volume level. Normally, I've gone in the status
menu with vo M twice, and then vo right arrow 3 or 4 times to system sound
volume. Then I've used the down and up arrows to turn the volume up or down.
How can you adjust the system volume though on the fly without going in the
status menu? I can't figure this out.
Thanks.

without going in the status menu? I can't figure this out.

Thanks.

Re: Garageband and moving regions

2013-03-19 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Ricardo. I just listened to your second podcast last night. I didn't
realize there was a quicker way of moving regions. I'll have to try that.
What does vo command accent do again in Garage Band without the shift key?

Thanks

Hello,

its funny, I think I really need to start updating those podcasts. haha. I
don't think I've moved regions like that in forever. You can now interact
with arrange area/timeline/instruments, find the region you wish to move,
cut, and then paste it where you want on the time line. Or copy if thats
what you wish to do.

But now I have a region which doesn't let me move it. I did the same as

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?

Garage Band help

2013-03-17 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. I tried sending this email twice last night, but I'm not sure
what happened. I never saw my email message on the list. Anyway, here's what I
said.

I listened to Ricardo's podcast about some basics for using Garage Band. I
think this was for version 6. I'm using Garage Band 11 with Mac
OS 10.6.8. I've already created a project, but I want to add some drum beats
from the Apple Loops into my song. When I'm in the window for the project,
Voiceover isn't speaking everything listed like for the arrange layout area. It
is just showing me the multiple time indicator ruler, time grid, the instrument
tracks with the scroll area and the lock time to play heads check box. I'm not
seeing anything else for the media or loop browser and Voiceover isn't
announcing
which area I'm currently in like for the arrange layout. How do I fix this
problem? Also can you navigate the loop browser and select what you're looking
for with Voiceover?
Thanks for your help.

solved my Garage band problem

2013-03-17 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hey guys. I figured out why I wasn't seeing everything in the arrange layout
area before with Voiceover. I was in the track info group area and realized I
needed to stop interacting with this to get to arrange layout. For some reason,
I didn't think of that before, I didn't know I was always in a group area every
time I opened up my project.

help with installing driver for Oxygen 8

2013-02-22 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone.

I listened to Ricardo's first tutorial on the Apple to the Core site about
learning to use Garage Band. This is one of the programs I wanted to learn for
a week or so. Anyway, I wanted to use Garage Band today and install a driver on
the Mac for my Oxygen 8 keyboard. I've tried to install this a few times during
the past week, but I'm having problems
getting past the first part of the installation on the M Audio CD. Voiceover
shows an image browser about a minute
after I click on the M Audio CD. I know in the manual it said to click on an
image with a .pkg extension, but Voiceover just says image selected 1 of 252
after I interact
with the image browser. I went to column view and interacted with the file
list. I tried pressing control option space on one of the files and tried
clicking
on the image this way and nothing happens. After I tried clicking on a file,
there was a dialog that said it could not find the program to open the file. I'm
very frustrated and need help getting past this part of the installation. I
even had someone sighted come over today to take a look (the person is a
Windows user) and unfortunately, he couldn't figure out this either.
What am I doing wrong here? I know after you select the .pkg file, you enter
your user name and password. Since I'm renting this Mac, I don't have a
password on this machine.
Thanks for your help.

Yes. Cmd-left/right moves to the start or end of the line, up/down to the
top or bottom of the edit field. Option-left/right moves by word, up/down by
paragraph. Add shift to select by the movement instead of just moving by it.

Re: Editing text

2013-02-14 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hey John its Katie. I remember seeing you in the summer of 2000! I met you at
an intensive workshop one week during August when I was at the Southern
California Conservatory of Music for 3 weeks. We were learning to use Sonar
with Jaws with about 4 other people. I had no idea you switched to the Mac,
that's awesome! I'm currently renting a Mac for a few months right now and have
really enjoyed it. I've been learning to use the Mac and Voiceover for about 3
weeks now and so far, I've been impressed with how much easier Voiceover is to
use compared with learning how to use Jaws. Sometimes, its a little challenging
like with navigating dialogs, reading paragraphs online, or interacting with
items, but its getting easier. Besides doing the quick start and getting
started tutorials for learning Voiceover, I've listened to some podcasts on the
Mac for the Blind site which have been helpful. One thing I've been learning is
to just throw everything you know about Windows aside because otherwise some of
the concepts for the Mac and Voiceover are different and you could get confused
if you try comparing how something works in Windows.
I'll try that suggestion for reading paragraphs in Text Edit.
I'm Glad to see you on the list.

Unfortunately, Safari navigation is different. You have to interact with the
text you want to review, which is made frustrating if, say there is a link
in the middle of a long article. Once you interact, you can move by
character with vo-shift-left/right, or word with vo-left/right. You can also
enable quicknav and use the rotor to read by line or other chunks of text.

2013-02-02 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, my name is Katie Zodrow. I used to be on the MacVisionaries list about 7 or
8 years ago when Tiger and Voiceover were just released. I'm currently renting
a Mac for a few months with Snow Leopard os 10.6. For the past 2 weeks, I've
been learning the Mac and how to use Voiceover and so far, I've found it pretty
easy to use. I'm used to using a PC with Jaws. Sometimes, its a little
challenging to figure out when you need to interact with items, but this is
getting easier for me. I've learned how to navigate Safari, use commands for
reading text like in Text Edit, and some basics on using the Finder app. I've
also explored the Address Book and want to learn Garage Band. I had a question
about selecting text. How do you select text on a web page in Safari or in a
word processing program like Text Edit? In Safari, I started interacting with
the text and did shift right arrow, but nothing happened. I'm not sure if I'm
doing this correctly.

Also, I will be learning how to use ProTools again and wanted to know if
there's anything else I need to learn before getting a copy of the software.
Thanks for your help.

Katie
