[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1718480] Re: Allow modules to extend group menu items

2018-01-04 Thread Stacey Walker
Fix included in https://reviews.mahara.org/#/c/8401/

I recommend a separate launchpad ticket to look at all the places that
tabs and menu items can be adjusted and ensure a standard as it may not
be specific to groups where we have this inconsistency.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1723961] [NEW] Plans blocktype improve user experience (Enhancement)

2017-10-16 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

We have a client who has identified that end users of their Mahara
installation need to be able to update a plan or task from within a
blocktype instance and return to the page that they were on for more
consistent experience.

Finding their way to the plan or task itself in their portfolio content
can be several clicks to get to and then several more to return to the
page or dashboard they were reviewing. This can also be exacerbated if
the user has a high number of instances of each content or page type.

Because of the above they have required the following enhancements added
to the Plans blocktype to improve user experience:

1. a link to edit a plan instance (description, title, tags etc)
2. a link to add a new task to a plan instance
3. the ability to edit a task instance (description, title, tags, completion
date etc)
4. the ability to mark a task as complete or incomplete from

Requirements 1-3, upon save or cancel, will redirect back to the page
the user was on before entering these pages.

All editing functionality will only be available to the page owner and
when in the editing page mode.

In addition they have also requested the following functionality:
- the ability to select more than one plan instance per blocktype

to reduce the unique number of blocktypes required on the page.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1722861] [NEW] Institutional tags (New feature)

2017-10-11 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

We have a client who has a requirement to define and manage a set of
institutional tags which members can use for tagging portfolio content.

These tags must be:
- configured disabled per institution by default with the ability to enable
- only visible and selectable by institutional members
- clearly identifiable as institutional tags when selecting and filtering
-- and which institution if the user belongs to multiple using this feature
- non-editable by members outside of the institutional tag management screens

It is believed that this feature would make a good addition to Mahara
core and could be extended in the future to helping with other features
such as SmartEvidence classifications etc.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 731647] Re: Ignore duplicates in CSV upload

2016-12-14 Thread Stacey Walker
We have experienced a similar issue.

When uploading users if duplicate emails exist but the usernames don't
match the system reports a non-recoverable error in the server logs but
only presents a simple "no users uploaded" type error to the user within
the UI with no further explanation of what happened - what was incorrect
in the file - in order for the administrator to correct the CSV file.

This means that the administrative user has to contact server admins to
identify the error and correct their file accordingly.

Especially as the nonrecoverable error prevents any other genuine
accounts without errors from being created.

It'd be better if Mahara provided clearer error reporting for the
administrative user in the UI rather than failing and only providing
this in the backend.

Title:
  Ignore duplicates in CSV upload

Status in Mahara:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When an institution wants to upload their users via a csv file, but
some of their users already have a Mahara account, i.e. the email
address already exists in Mahara, an error message is returned and no
  new user accounts are created.

Instead, only these duplicates should be ignored and all other
accounts should be created. Thus, when a csv file is uploaded and
existing accounts / email addresses are encountered, convert the error
message into a warning that is printed to the screen and keep going
  with the account creation.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1636208] [NEW] Cannot delete institution with CSV created groups

2016-10-24 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

This is similar too but not a direct copy of:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1607231

Mahara: 16.04.3
DB: Postgres
OS: Linux
Browser: Firefox

A site admin user is not able to delete an institution when groups have
been uploaded via CSV.

This appears to be because the groups have been uploaded with one or
more foreign key references to the institution selected.

There is no reference within the UI to this though, so we cannot change
the groups stored institution or delete only groups that are related so
that we can delete the institution itself.

This is a rather large blocker to deleting obsolete information within
any configuration.

To reproduce:
1. Create a custom institution
2. Upload a CSV of groups
3. Try to delete institution

This looks most problematic if you have more than one institution and
groups created both manually and via CSV as you cannot distinguish
easily. Also, you cannot link an institution via the manual creation it
seems.

step 1: asks for new collection name (entered: Collection Two)
step 2: asks to manage pages (Page One is missing when it should show a

Title:
Copying a collection is creating extra duplicates

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  New

Bug description:
User A has one collection and two pages:
  * Page One (In Collection One)
  * Page Two

Cloning of a single page works correctly, can rename and re-edit.

Cloning of the collection creates two extra collections instead of the one
specified:
step 1: asks for new collection name (entered: Collection Two)
step 2: asks to manage pages (Page One is missing when it should show a
copy, Page Two is correctly an option to select - User A chooses no new page)
  Done + Save.

  Now User A can see:
  - 'Collection Two' with no pages
  - Copy of 'Collection One' with 'Copy of Page One'

Should see only 'Collection Two' with Copy of Page One'. Images

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 825311] Re: export doesn't distinguish a 'collections' export from a 'views' export

2011-08-25 Thread Stacey Walker
Awesome, good to know it's not intentional.

I've added a new const for stating that you're downloading a collection
independently of the views (currently it doesn't distinguish) and I'm
just looking at html export now to recognise the same difference.
Leap2a afterwards.

Will try and get a patch into gerrit soon so it can be reviewed and
hopefully added sooner rather than later

Currently, when you export a few pages as HTML you get collection

I noticed this issue while trying to implement a PDF export a little
better as I need the difference clear when creating a table of

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 825311] Re: export doesn't distinguish a 'collections' export from a 'views' export

2011-08-24 Thread Stacey Walker
I can also confirm that this is the same for leap2a exports.

Say I have a collection with 5 pages in it, but upon export I choose to
only export one page in my leap2a package. When I import that later the
collection information is recreated as well so I have a replica of the
collection with the single page in it.

I think that if a user is wanting/expecting to export a single page
that's all they should get and the collection information can be
obtained by exporting a collection itself. Otherwise it seems slightly
(not completely, but slightly) redundant having the two options at
export.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 801081] Re: Main and sub menus - alternate dropdown display feature

2011-08-02 Thread Stacey Walker
I've pushed a patch to reviews.mahara.org to move 'Institution
Membership' to 'Groups' - though not renaming the parent navigation
title as the interaction topic suggests.

With dropdown navigation set when you click on the 'Settings' tab you
are still losing the 'Notifications' page now so I am working at re-
jigging that so it remains. Am tentatively thinking about putting it in
an enclosed box like the 'Profile' items under 'Content' so I'll just do
this and submit and we can throw the change away and try something else
if it doesn't suit :)

The User settings 'Institution Membership' navigation item gets lost in
this new dropdown view as it isn't related to a main navigation item.

Suggested fix to this is to add it to the 'Groups' item. Any
objections/other suggestions?

Groups isn't limited just to groups as it is anyway as the Friends
related pages are in there already so this isn't too much of a leap
hopefully :)

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 801081] Re: Main and sub menus - alternate dropdown display feature

2011-06-23 Thread Stacey Walker
This is actually something that Paul Walker and I worked on over the
Mahara UK 2011 Conference yesterday. :)

We've made the required changes to add the option to the site
configuration and have styled all the packaged themes so that it
displays in all (in line with their existing schemes; so some prettier
than others in this format).

To add styling to custom themes it should only necessary to add a few
lines to the styles.css file in relation to the sub-menu part. The main
menu should be able to retain the standard navigation styles.

Once we've done a bit more browser testing and some tidy up we'll add it
to reviews.mahara.org. I've attached a screenshot of the 'default'
theme using this feature.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 761834] [NEW] Page 'Edit Title and Description' should be first in list

2011-04-15 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

People have been saying that the Edit Title and Description tab in Page
editing should be first because quite often people forget and/or close
the screen without realising it'll save anyway and end up with lots of
Untitled(*) pages.

If this tab was first in the order of page editing it might be harder
for it to be forgotten.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 746483] [NEW] Group member pagination not highlighting correct page number in some browsers

2011-03-31 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

When going to Group -> Members with pagination necessary and selecting
to move to another page ('2' for example) the visible group of user
profiles change but the page number remains on '1'. If you click the
page 2 indicator again then the number highlighted now changes to '2'
correctly and the user profiles do not change (as they are already
visible).

Confirmed in Google Chrome version 10.0.648.204
Not an issue in Firefox version 3.6.16

Development instance of 1.4.0alpha2dev

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 746459] [NEW] Institution staff/admin options must first be invited as standard members

2011-03-31 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

In order to select staff or admin users for institutions via the UI they
must first be 'invited' as members.

When selecting general members you can choose to filter based on a few
criteria - it might be worth having a similar filter for selecting
admin/staff roles to bypass the invitation email and approval process
and make it easier to setup institutions manually.

This bug relates slightly to bug#746440 where users can't really be
manually added but must be invited (or added by an automated
Authentication Plugin) and then approved on user profile screens or by
the user under Settings -> Institution Memberships.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 746440] Re: bulk approve users for institution membership

2011-03-31 Thread Stacey Walker
Amended the bug description as admin isn't registering users but
"inviting" them.

IMO the ability to do a full manual add/approve system in the UI would
still be useful and in this same context be able to turn of emails or
send a different email "you have been added/enrolled in institution
xyz".

** Description changed:

It would be nice if institution/general admins could bulk approve users
- for institutions. Currently you are able to "register" users in bulk
- but they then either need to login and approve the registration it seems
- or the admin needs to visit each user profile page individually and
+ for institutions. Currently you are able to "invite" users in bulk but
+ they then either need to login and approve the registration it seems or
+ the admin needs to visit each user profile page individually and
  approve.

For purposes of development/testing and general administration it would
be awesome if the same admins could manage this without that level of
  effort.

Further to this it might also be nice to manage whether the emails that
are sent out with add/approval of memberships should be sent. "Send
  email notification of membership" checkbox?

Bug description:
  On 1.4.0alpha2dev

When creating an institution there is no 'Authentication Plugin'
configuration option available on the 'Add Institution' page. See

If you deselect the 'Registration allowed?' checkbox and hit submit

authenticationpluginerror.png. A new 'Authentication Plugin' option
now exists and the "Institution name" option has disappeared. There
is no marker on the authentication plugin option indicating that it is
  required.

If you click cancel where it looks like the submission has failed you
can see that the new institution was in fact created and if you edit
the settings you can see that it has IMAP as the authentication
  plugin.

Perhaps this could be managed better with a bit of JS to tie in the
registration option with the display/hide of the authentication
setting; defaulting to both visible if JS is not enabled.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 728837] Re: Upgrade broken from 1.2.6 to 1.3.0

2011-03-17 Thread Stacey Walker
I have been able to upgrade from fresh installs of 1.2.3 and 1.2.5 to
1.3.3 without problems so there is a possibility that the dumps have
some partially corrupt data in them.

The upgrades did take a bit of time to get past core so if this was
interrupted on a mysql database then it could have left the database in
an inconsistent state; due to the lack of DDL transactional support in
mysql.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 730727] [NEW] plugin enable/disable to rely on correct plugin configuration

2011-03-07 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

Once a new plugin is installed via the Administration UI it can be
enabled and disabled or have config set. It'd be nice to be able to set
a restriction on some plugins that they can't be enabled unless certain
configuration is set up correctly.

This would be primarily to avoid incorrect system configuration
resulting in enabled but broken plugins. Especially when thinking about
contrib plugins that might require third party software to be installed
on the server and configured in Mahara.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 723210] Re: mahara.org wiki documentation needs to be updated for 1.3 and 1.4

2011-02-23 Thread Stacey Walker
I do think some organisation into sections is necessary, especially if
we end up retaining any of the 1.2 based documentation and how long for
etc (likewise for 1.3 when further versions come out). Though I
understand about the desire to keep the documentation minimal in size.

>From 1.2 to 1.3 there were at least the introductions of Plans and Collections
>From 1.3 to 1.4 there are a significant amount of UI and terminology changes
>From 1.4 to 1.5 etc there could be any number of changes - skins vs themes for
>one? (unless that is in 1.4)

Perhaps just having an archive somewhere of previous versions would be
good.

Though, I see from the backlog that the wiki is to be migrated to
mediawiki so we could do the "versions" by way of adding categories and
that'd reduce the number of page double ups where things haven't changed
between versions?

I'm definitely willing to help out with documentation if we can come up
with an agreed plan.

mahara.org wiki documentation needs to be updated for 1.3 and 1.4

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Mahara wiki content needs an overhaul to bring it into line with 1.3
  and 1.4 versions.

A lot of the existing 'User Guide' content doesn't seem to have been
updated since ~2008 and it'd be good to separate the information out
on the wiki into the two versions, much like how Moodle has gone about
  1.9 vs 2.0 documentation.

Roadmap could also do with some structure and collation so information
can be easily seen when new 1.5 roadmap specification items are added
under a separate section. It might be a good idea to try and avoid
having wishlist items there anyway and keep those discussions on
forums and here in launchpad before moving to the wiki as official
  design specifications/roadmap when ready.

  Ideas:
  - Roadmap -> 1.3/1.4 -> items/details -> specification (if available;
removing "wishlist")
  - User Guides -> 1.3/1.4 -> Dashboard/Content/Porfolio etc
  - Site Administration Guides -> 1.3/1.4 -> General/Groups/Users/Institutions
etc
  - Institution Administration Guides -> 1.3/1.4 ->

Themes - has the design of this changed much between versions?
System Adminstration Guide - is it worth separating this out for ease of
finding information? does it vary much?
Language Packs - already has version availability table
Plugins - shall we create versions here too and plugin maintainers can add
information when/if a plugin is upgraded for new versions? Or copy somewhat the
way that Language packs are currently maintaining supported versions?

Some of the content might not change that much between versions but it
might be worth separating that out now while we can to future proof
for bigger version differences in those areas.

I have only been looking at the English documenation. :)

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 723225] [NEW] Collections shared with groups not identified as such

2011-02-22 Thread Stacey Walker
Public bug reported:

Currently in 1.3 and 1.4dev collections can have access permissions set
to share with groups. However when you go to view the group all the
views within the collection are displayed in the Dashboards 'Group
Views' as separate views and not as the collection that was shared.

With the new 1.4 change to the blocktype for choosing group owned or
shared views independently when editing the dashboard a third option for
shared collections could be added. This might also help occasionally
with Bug# 702173 by limiting the view list a bit.

The issue of collections not able to be "submitted" (views only, Bug#
617376) would mean that this would probably be done by querying whether
or not views shared with the group belong to collections and separating
them out into each list within the blocktype code.

Unless the bigger issue of collection submission is sorted out first.

specifications/roadmap when ready.

Ideas:
- Roadmap -> 1.3/1.4 -> items/details -> specification (if available; removing
"wishlist")
- User Guides -> 1.3/1.4 -> Dashboard/Content/Porfolio etc
- Site Administration Guides -> 1.3/1.4 -> General/Groups/Users/Institutions etc
- Institution Administration Guides -> 1.3/1.4 ->

Some of the content might not change that much between versions but it
might be worth separating that out now while we can to future proof for
bigger version differences in those areas.

I have only been looking at the English documenation. :)

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 721316] Re: collection and view access/share 1.4

2011-02-18 Thread Stacey Walker
Realised how this is happening, it is still a bug but slightly different
to what I initially thought. It is to do with a view having previously
belonged to a collection and then being removed.

I created 2 more pages and a second collection.
Then I added both the pages to the second collection.
On the 'Share' tab I now had:
 [edit access] page one
  collection one
 [edit access] collection two

Then I removed a page from the second collection (so it was independent again).
On the 'Share' tab I now have:
 [edit access button] page one
 collection one
[edit access button] page I just removed from collection two
collection two

And if I select to edit the access of the page that I removed from
collection two then I have both that page and collection two selected on
the next page.

Pinned it down to the new accessconf value in the view table, introduced
in version 2010122201, as it is still the same as the view remains in
the collection. So this needs to be unset somewhere.

I personally still don't like the double up of page/collection selection
between Share and Access pages.

Bug description:
  Re: http://wiki.mahara.org/Roadmap/3_Views - 3.3 Improvements to
Access Control as it currently is in 1.4dev.

With the new UI if I have a single independent page and a collection
containing other pages I found the following:

  - I went to the 'Share' tab and there was only an edit access icon
next to the single page not the collection.

I would expect that I could edit the access for collections as well as
  individual pages?

  - when I clicked to edit the single page I was taken to the access
page as expected, but in here there are two checkboxes at the top of
the page: one for the collection and one for the page I was expecting.
Both selected by default. Unfortunately I only saw these too late and
ended up changing the access for everything - collection and single
  page.

I only wanted to change the access for my single page (partially LIES!
this was actually the only thing I was given the option to edit on the
  previous page).

This appears to be a change in aid of bulk access editing, though
there is still no mention of this on the page and I only wanted update
the access for a single page.

Having these checkboxes here and selected by default means that I
either need to make my selection twice with the second "selection"
being a matter of "de-selection" or once (if we eliminated the
original screen) and then only by a process of "de-selection".

Selection of pages/collections to be updated should IMO only happen on
one page - so we should either eliminate the first screen or remove
  the boxes from the second.

To remedy this mess I had to select to change access for my single
page again, deselect the page that I have just selected to change
access for, so that only the collection is checked, and then update
back to what I wanted. Wash, rinse, repeat if there had been any other
collections/pages (which would have been painful!). Though admittedly
I might have noticed as the checkbox list would have been larger and
  more obvious.

I would personally prefer to be able to choose the item(s) I wish to
update and then be taken to a page knowing that it is just for my
selected items. A la the old access UI but with the addition of being
able to select bulk lots somehow.

At the very least collections definitely should be showing an Edit
Access button of their own on the first screen.

Don't want this current setup to slip through to release in April and
cause problems with existing accesses ...

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 692614] Re: Registration email can be sent out more than once within the initial 24 hour period

2010-12-20 Thread Stacey Walker
As far as I can tell from quick testing it's not going to let a user do
anything they shouldn't be allowed to. i.e., create two accounts with
exactly the same username, email where they should be unique.

But it could result in a bit of confusion if a user thought that maybe
their account wasn't being created properly and kept registering etc.

Perhaps we need to check for a unique email in here and offer some notification
to the user that the email has already been used?

However, there is also the issue that if this initial email wasn't received it
might not be easy for the user to wait 24 hours until it clears from the
database to try again, or to get hold of a sysadmin to delete the record
manually so they can do so without hassle so there might be extra requirements
around this or this might be the reason it currently allows for multiple

Hi Kristina,

This same issue has been discussed here -
http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=2367 and we've come to
the conclusion that the block does actually function correctly but it
isn't that obvious.

As Colin suggests having something that admins can use to draw attention
to group owned/created views would be helpful. So, perhaps a separate
blocktype or the ability for admins to include them in the existing one
would be a useful modification?

The new collection feature is a great one. However, when a view is added to a
collection it can't be reused; either in a collection or on its own. As an
example, I may have created a CV view which I plan to use for all my job
applications. I plan to create a new collection for each application as the
jobs I'm applying for are in different areas. I therefore need to have a CV in
each collection, and having to create a new CV view for each collection doesn't
fit with Mahara's concept of reuse of content. In addition, I may wish to share
just my CV with someone, and presently when they visit it they will see the
navigation bar for the collection. It makes sense for views to exist separately
to collections, rather than as part of them.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 619266] Re: Collection missing 'cancel' during create functionality

2010-08-24 Thread Stacey Walker
Have pushed some commits to fix this item.

Fixes to submitcancel pieform element enable the developer to enter
submit/cancel in any order using string indices. If the indices aren't
strings or invalid (i.e., not 'submit' or 'cancel') then the
functionality falls back on the standard 0 = submit, 1 = cancel
situation. Have also added a check to ensure these default indices
exist so to avoid any possible unsightly errors.

There is an existing check at the top of the page that limits the
elements entered in submitcancel to exactly 2 items.

Hi Richard,

If 'submit' and 'cancel' are not used as keys then it falls back to 0, 1
indices to display submit cancel.

I will test the other elements when I have time later.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 619867] Re: Collection: view access updating at problematic time

2010-08-20 Thread Stacey Walker
Richard - the views picker widget is just a wish item at this stage and
no development has been started. Hopefully one day, I might create a
wishlist bug for this so we have it on track etc :)

For now though, I have gone with what you suggested by adding an extra
sentence to the notification that states:

"Collection has been updated to include access from new view." (or views
if multiple were added).

This doesn't say what access was added but at least offers the user some
more information that access changes are occurring.

Have committed this patch seeing as it is trivial.

The user might also just add a view and then immediately decide that wasn't the

This is an issue for both new and existing collections.

The help file does mention this is going to happen, but I'm thinking it is not
the most appropriate event for access updating to occur on anyway.

Solutions might be to:

For new collections:
a) update access only on the final stage when user saves collection completely
b) alert user somehow that views are going to have their access updated when
they navigate past the views page

For existing collections:
a) only update when the user is completely finished with the page (clicking
'Done') and ensure it is clear that the access will be updated at this time

Any other ideas?

As collection access rights overwrite view access rights, I would disable the
"Edit View Access" link on a view that sits in a collection. The user cannot
get to it from the view overview page - why should he get to it on the actual
view? That would make it easier to edit the access rights for a collection
really only on the collection page.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 619266] Re: Collection missing 'cancel' during create functionality

2010-08-19 Thread Stacey Walker
While fixing this I thought about visually making the 'next' element on
the right of the 'cancel' (which I'd wanted to do for a while).

Using the existing submitcancel pieform element this wasn't possible due
to the explicit indexing and "drawing" of the elements in the return
statement.

I had originally copied this and created a new element called
cancelsubmit that simply just reversed everything. Richard then
suggested that we instead make the submitcancel element more generic and
handle some string indices as well as the default numeric indices. That
way we can add the submit/cancel buttons in any order we want by
specifying what they are with 'cancel' and 'submit' as array keys. The
way they are entered into the array determines the order in which they
will be drawn in the form.

http://gitorious.org/~stacey/mahara/staceys-
sandbox/commit/b2989c50b8b4e74c494c93fde97261fae560f568

e.g., we can add cancel and submit buttons by either of the following
ways:

$elements['submit']['values'] = array(
'submit' => get_string('submit'),
'cancel' => get_string('cancel'),
);

 or,

$elements['submit']['values'] = array(get_string('cancel'),
get_string('submit'));

The first syntax might also mean that we can have any amount of elements
if we wanted; provided the plugin does exist.

e.g.,

$elements['submit']['values'] = array(
'submit'  => get_string('submit'),
'cancel'  => get_string('cancel'),
'anotherplugin' => get_string('anotherplugin'),
...
);

I haven't tested just what you can add in there yet. :) but if it does
work with lots of plugins, then it might solve one of the TODOs at the
bottom of this page:
http://wiki.mahara.org/Developer_Area/Core_Subsystems/Form_API_(Pieforms)

any thoughts?

I also have the simple fix for the cancellation issue now, but I need to
separate it out into more appropriate commits before pushing to master.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 620258] Re: View access accessible when view is in a collection

2010-08-19 Thread Stacey Walker
Hi Kristina,

Are you talking about the link to the access page from the view itself?

I just discovered that by clicking on the visible 'Edit Access' in the
top right of the view takes me back to the current views access page
without realising that it is part of a collection.

I am wondering if we might want to:

a) change 'Edit Access' to go to the collections access page when the view is
part of a collection and,
b) add an 'Edit Collection' link up there - so that a user can be looking at
their new collections display and decide that "hang on that view doesn't quite
belong in this collection now that I think about it ... " or "hmm, I want to
change that navigation order around a bit" and want easy access back to this

Obviously there might be other solutions but these seem the easiest. :)
