MD: Things Sony should add

2000-09-17 Thread Joost de Meij

Hello, i've been thinking about some simple little things Sony might add to
their decks.

- With peak hold on, you can press the clear button to clear the peaks
- With sleep timer on, you should have a display option with a countdown
(Sleep: -29:13)
- Name Date stamp (Or just time on the display)
- Menu lock (when you don't want someone to make edits, or to change setup
options)
- A title that keeps scrolling on the display (just like my MD-MT15)

Do newer decks have any of these functions (i own a MDS-JE520)

Thanks.

MD: thanks for help

2000-09-17 Thread HK Hill

Re the non-functioning Aiwa AM-F5:

I tried running it on the charger the day it died--no response--no LED, no
battery indicator, nothing. Usually run it from the charger when I use it at
home or work, plugged into good old AC.
Cigarette lighter and DC adapter still work--tried my portable CD player and
it worked just fine.
Plugged in the dry cell pack--nothing.

Of course this 'disaster' happened the 2nd day of my 10 day trip :(. Every
day I tried putting it on the AC charger in hotel rooms with no results :(.
Got home, same thing, which is when, of course, I turned to the list. I
hadn't attempted anything else with the unit for a few days. After reading
your suggestions, I decided to try it on the charger again. Lo and behold,
RESULTS!! The little battery indicator is on, the NO DISK and COVER OPEN
LEDs were there. I have no clue. Could using the cigarette adapter (not one,
I must add, one designed for use with the Aiwa---I've used it before in the
car, but never for so long a time) have somehow overcharged the battery and
it took this time to discharge down? Or is this supposition a violation of
laws of physics and batteries? ;} I choose to believe that the collective
psychic energies of the list empowered my poor old unit ;-}. Anyway, it's
charging up now, and I will check it out when fully charged. And I promise
not to use it on the cigarette adapter again.

I also apologize for the bad temper of my request (ok, demand) for help.
Like most of us, I get testy when ignored. Thanks again for the advice.

I'm glad to hear that your unit isn't dead. :-)

Most adapters that plug into the cigarette lighter have a fuse in them.
Have you checked it to make sure it's OK?

I haven't seen a good picture of the display anywhere on the web. It

All the JB9xx decks have date stamp, I am fairly sure. As to Name Stamp, if
you're referring to Moji Stamp on Sharp portables, no Sony decks have it.

I think I was prematurely enthusiastic about the sound quality of LP4.
I still think it's pretty good, but I recorded some music that was a
little more subtle--and demanding--than the orchestral music I used
initially to test LP4. I recorded a song from THE BILL EVANS ALBUM,
and I noticed that the piano sound was somewhat muddy and occasionally
 gritty in places.

Funny, one of the tests I made in my hotel room where I reported the LP4
problems was Bill Evans, Live from the Village Vanguard.

I have done some more tests. Piano is difficult for LP4. Also, material
that has a lot of phase information, like the beginning of "Brown Eyed Girl"
by Van Morrison. "The Prophets Song" by Queen, which has a passage that is a
ping pong like stereo round, going radically from left channel to right
channel with little background to mask noise, created some huge artifacts.
Almost like pops. Other material sounds pretty good. It is really source
dependant. I might use it for some mindless Pop material that I like to
carry for light hearted listening, and delete any tracks that screw up.
Eventually I think I will have to try it for a few months to know if it is
going to be acceptable. A 320 minute disc is a real space saver, so I think
it will be worth the effort.

It's certainly
good enough for airchecks, which was the primary reason for my
enthusiasm. If you want a long mix for background music, LP4 will
definitely suffice.

I agree with Jim's comments. I did some ambient recording, walking around
town and recording a meeting with a cheap stereo microphone. LP4 did a fine
job with this and would be great for recording lectures or meetings.

LP2 sounds fine, but I haven't done a real critical test yet.

You can say what you want about your recorder. Sony SUCKS I have never
owned a reliable Sony product (one exception)!!! Every damn piece of sh!t
that I over paid for the Sony "name" died before its time!!! EVERY one
(again one exception)!!!

I own a top of the line portable Sony CD player with a digital output. I
doubt that this player has 50 hours on it. Yesterday I wen to use it and the
remote would not illuminate. Then you couldn't read the display at all.
Thenthe remote it just stopped working period!!!

Sony has the poorest quality control and reliability of any piece of
electronics I have ever owned (with their only exception being their
Trinitron technology. For some reason, their computer monitors seem
reliable).

In Consumer Reports Sony consistently ranks near the top in reader polls when
it comes to consumer dissatisfaction with regard to reliability. I'm not
going to waste everyone's time going over the dozen or so Sony "nightmares"
that I have experienced because I have more exciting news to post in a
separate e mail.

They are almost the always first to come out with all kinds of new and
exciting features and the first to have those features break! I'm
considering (what a schmuck I am. I always swear I'll never buy another Sony
product. Then they come along with something totally unique and I cave in,
only to find weeks or months later that it is not working). Buying their new
12 unit large touch screen illuminated remote control.

If I'm stupid enough to buy one (they cost about $170.00-that's a lot of
money for a remote, but if it eliminates 6 remotes sitting on a coffee table
with one very easy to use unit, it may be worth it) I bet you read about it
failing a few months later.

solid and the MDs themselves are too, and I'd rather have someone trash a

But I'm not too keen on some boozed person wiping all my MDs with a touch of

Rodney,

That's not really a very good record for Sony! I feel that if you have 10
pieces of electronic equipment costing $200.00 or more you should expect no
more then 2 to give you any problems in three years.

I have had good luck with Panasonic over all. Much better then Sony (but
that's not saying much).

Sharp has pretty reliable. Aiwa is not too bad (before you go saying that
Sony owns Aiwa, they make totally different products in different plants. I
have personally never seen an Aiwa product that is a Sony Clone).

Pioneer: Receivers have been good. 6 CD changers so so. Forget their Air
Conditioners!!

Phillips: mixed. RCA too complex to go in to. Older RCA is a different
company than today. (I believe their TV are now made by Thompson).

Most, but not all, brands of TVs are fairly reliable compared to other
components. Panasonic has been good for me and their picture quality is
good to.

When it comes to picture quality (not reliability) Sonys are usually very,
very good. I'm sure that their ultra high end XBR or (what is that FUX? )
digital flat screen TVs are amazing. I'll bat they are probably close to
the stand that others are compared to.

MD: MD. Alive and well!!!

2000-09-17 Thread las

I was checking out my local Circuit Shity today. I have good news
regarding MD. I saw about 5 or 6 different choices in blanks (from
about 3 or 4 different manufactures). They had a 15 pack of Fuji that
sold for $30. That's pretty good for CC.

I also say about 4 different portable MD recorders (3 Sony and one
Sharp). I didn't see any decks. But I wasn't looking and I think that
they were in the middle of doing something in their component section
because most of the racks had empty spaces. I couldn't find one Onkyo
receiver even though I know that they push them.

A little off the topic. I heard a pair of 61/2" Polk auto speakers that
really sounded great. But lets face it, in a car unless you are willing
to spend thousands of dollars altering the interior and setting up
special baffles for the speakers, don't expect too much no matter what
you pay.

Even them you still have to deal with road and wind noise.

MD: Switchable bit length

My MDS-JA20ES allows you to switch the bit length between 24, 20 or 16
bits. This function has always puzzled me. Will this in any way effect the
recording and playback of MDs or does this only come into play if using this
machine as an external DAC for say, a CD player or DAT deck? Or am I missing
the point of this function all together?

Perhaps you should bring a portable player to those parties instead of your
520. Also, open the discs' write-protects: the extra trouble to eject the
discs, close the write-protects, and reinsert the discs might be just what
keeps a joker from trying anything. It certainly will make it take more work
than just touching two buttons.

Finally, with a 520 you can clone the TOCs to scratch discs that you leave at
home; if someone screws around with deletions or titles, you can restore the
original information as soon as you get home.

Sure the law of averages will allow you to have several Sony units that are very
reliable. But your 510 only strengthens my point.

After they they fixed my MZ-1 2 times it worded fine. My son has it (I'm tempted
to give him one of my newer units so that he will not destroy my MZ-1 because I
really believe that working models will be worth something in the future).

It not just that it will be old. It is the uniqueness of the unit.

Off topic again:
Do you realize that there is NO word in English that can be used to describe the
relationship between the parents of the husband and wife. Thin about it. They
are not in laws to each other. But in Yiddish there is a specific word that
describes the relationship.

Thanks to the comedian Mike Myers, Yiddish has become an "in thing". I wish I
was fluent it it. I understand a little and speak even less. A lot of neat
expressions.
