MD: Sharp 722 EEPROM Settings / Service Manual

2001-06-07 Thread Ian Horsey

** Sorry, Outhouse Distress didn't like me changing it into plain text the
first time around.. **

Hi

Does anyone know where I can find the EEPROM settings for a Sharp 722, or
could anyone tell me if they are the same as the Sharp 701/702? Failing
that, does anyone know where I can find a copy of the service manual for the
722?

Cheers

Re: MD: Elektor SCMS stripper help needed

2001-04-19 Thread Ian Horsey

Hi Greg

The best instructions on how to adjust the pots is available at Derek
Streeter's website http://www.sketchy.net/md/elektor.html

You should only need to adjust the pots if you are using the co-ax
connections. If you are only using the toslink connectors then there is no
need for any adjustments.

The LEDs tell you what the frequency of the input signal is. The first LED
that lights tells you there is no signal, and then it goes up 32kHz,
44.1kHz, and 48kHz.

Hope this helps

Re: MD: Elektor SCMS Stripper. german help needed...

2001-03-26 Thread Ian Horsey

Read Derek Streeter's instructions on how to build the stripper -
they are very good, and can be found on the MiniDisc Community web
pages.

I have built three SCMS strippers to date, and I have found that the
potentiometers only really need adjusting for the co-ax connections -
if you're only going to use the optical connections it should work
without adjustments.

Re: MD: Lens Cleaners

2000-12-01 Thread Ian Horsey

Hello

I will be the first of many to say "DO NOT USE A LENS CLEANER!!!"

The lenses on MD players are made from plastic and get scratched by
lens cleaners. The best way to clean a dirty lens in my opinion is a
cotton bud and some good quality cleaning fluid.

Lens cleaning only needs to be done in dire circumstances - as Jim said, for
the most part dust and grot and stuff should never come into contact with
the lens. When a lens needs cleaning, often other things will need cleaning
too, so take off the cover and give it an overhaul. (as long as you know
what you're doing of course :o) )

MD: Strange Happenings and SCMS Killers

2000-10-25 Thread Ian Horsey

Hello

I'd been worrying for a while about how incredibly quiet the mailing
list had become over the last three weeks as I had received no
messages! So I tried to post the one below and was told I wasn't a
member anymore! Is someone trying to tell me something??

Anyway, I remember a while ago someone posting that Stippler had
stopped selling their SCMS stripper kits, but that another company in
the Netherlands were selling them.

Does anyone have the URL or information on the company?

Many thanks

Re: MD: Sharp 702 issues.

2000-03-01 Thread Ian Horsey

Hi Phil

I have heard of several people with similar problems to yours, and
the solution which seems to have worked for most people is to take
the unit apart and make sure that the ribbon cables inside the unit
are all attached properly.

Have a look at my website at http://www.btinternet.com/~ighorsey and
follow the links to 702 disassembly for instructions on how to take
the unit apart. You don't need to be a genius with a screwdriver to
do this, but previous experience would help you no end!

If you have any further questions please e-mail me off list.

Re: MD: Using a Timer with Sony MDSJE530

2000-01-27 Thread Ian Horsey

Hi Ian

I have a Sony JE520, and I use it in the way you describe. I have an
industrial digital controller / timer, and I can use this to set loads of
on/off timings. When the 520 is switched to Record Timer mode, it will
automatically find the last track on the MD and start recording after that,
so it won't overwrite any of your previous recordings.

The other Ian wrote :

I guess it's obvious that a cassette would work in this way but I am not
clear that an MD necessarily would. The 530 is designed to work in
conjunction with a timer but does anyone know if it works in the same way?
It seems logical that it should but I suppose it could do something less
helpful e.g. the second recording could overwrite the first.

All you need to do is hook the unit up to the mains timer, switch it over,
stand back and allow it to do its thing.

Hope this helps

Re: MD: Aiwa AM-F70 blip at end of last track!?

1999-12-28 Thread Ian Horsey

Hi Matt

I received an Aiwa AM-F70 for a christmas gift. Today I've
listened to a couple of MDs all the way through, and after the
last track on the disc, it seems to have a short, maybe 1/4 to
1/2 second blip of sound, after the track is done.

Most portable MD players / recorders tend to beep once the end of the
recording has been reached - I know my Sharp does.

It won't do anything to your recordings, and if it is bothering you, it
might be possible to switch the beeps off. Again, I know this is possible
on the Sharp units.

All the best

Hello List - long time no post

I don't know about the 722, but my 702 only has a curving downwards front
when I haven't rebuilt it properly. The top part of the case clips in above
the slot, so it sounds like it may have popped out. Are you any good with a

how to disassemble the unit - unless of course it is still under warranty.

Is there anything I can do? Other than ring Sharp and ask for a
replacement? When looking at the slot front one, I see that the top edge
is slightly curved downwards, is this part of the design, or do I have a
 shonky model?

Many happy returns of the season!

Excellent! I've only been thinking about getting into MDs for a week now
and

And why not - they're very fetching! You could also buy your girlfriend a

Okay, so no PC bay drive gizmo. What would you recomend for digital
 recordings ?
 1. PC sound card with digital o/p
 2. integrated CD/MD hifi separate (seems funny using those two words in
the
same phrase, but you know what I mean).
 3. CD player with digital o/p.
 4. any others

CD player with digital outputs gets my vote because its what I use, but
there is a lot of discussion at present about using soundcards with digital
outputs.

PS. I hate cables trailing everywhere.

Hide them in a cabinet then!

PSS. My live-in girlfriend has a Sony MZ-R55 (no guy should be without
one).

An MZ-R55 or a live-in girlfriend?

Hello All,

Just throught I'd let you know. We ordered a load of MiniDisc's for my
birthday (on the 29th) from Transco yeasturday. We asked for next day,
and sure enough they arrived in a box today at 10pm (which annoyed the
window cleaners 'cos they where over the front door, hehe ;)

Delivered at 10pm?!? I can believe that if it was from around here - we
have the slowest postman in the west. He doesn't usually make it to my
house until 2 o'clock, but when he is off the mail gets delivered at ten.
Quite a difference!

Full marks to Trasco PLC,

Forget Transco, full marks to your window cleaners! Do they come at night
so you can't see the smear marks until you've paid them?

Have a nice day

Ian

MD: 702 Microsurgery

Hi

Having just performed a succesful piece of surgery on the innards of my =
beloved 702, I just thought I'd post a little warning to other Sharp =
owners, and to a large extent all MD owners.

DON'T EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR MD RECORDERS!!

The reason I had to take mine to pieces was because I'd been =
experimenting and as a result, I had pushed the digital receiver out of =
alignment, and I had to re-position it. So hopefully I will have =
learned a lesson here, but I doubt whether it will stop me from =
tinkering with my bits of kit.

Anyway, at least I have learned how to strip a 702 down, and so if =
anyone else finds themselves in a position whereby they need to =
dismantle theirs, e-mail me, and I will send you a list of invaluable =
pointers! I will try and get these put onto my website also.

Patient has recovered from the anaesthetic and is functioning perfectly!

Have a nice day

Ian (who is going to lie down in a darkened room with a cold compress on =
his head)
