[MBZ] Gee my car sure shuts down quickly now
Shutdown valve installed and tested successful. In my two years of Benz diesel ownership, I had no idea that THIS was how the car was supposed to shut down -- instantly, just like a gasser does. Thanks to everyone who gave advice and hand-holding. I will admit to my normal paranoia, and had my brother-in-law (who is also my paid mechanic at his day job) standing by, towel in hand and air cleaner cover removed, just in case. He said he has had to shut down a couple of diesels exactly this way so I insisted that he stand by as the quick response team while I turned the key. The bad news is that I got so much Mobil 1 Splatter under my fingernails that I think I need to spray some degreaser on the engine, hose it down, and start chasing leaks. Did notice one interesting thing. The catalog calls for two gaskets. When I removed what I have to believe is factory stuff, I found a thick metal washer sitting against metal on the toward-the-front-of-the-car side and then a cork [I guess it was cork, but was as stiff as metal] washer outboard of that. ... Having two washers available, I did washer / metal / washer / shutoff valve. Seems to work. Don -- If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane.

[MBZ] Locked Ignition
In the past ~2 weeks, if I move my steering wheel at all before starting, the ignition locks up. I know that this is not uncommon. However, once it happens, it is almost unmovable. Sometimes it only takes a few tries but other times it can take 20 minutes of trying to turn the key before it goes. What's going on? Do I need to replace the ignition? Mind you that the key works for everything else and that when the ignition does not lock up the key starts the car just fine. Thanx for the help, Joseph Mendyka

Re: [MBZ] 124 Coupe seats
Second, there are two styles of 123 Coupe seats, I believe the crossover was very late in production, maybe 84 or 85. One more, I think. In '79 the coupe seat was lowered for more headroom. When I bought my 78 300D off the floor at my dealer, there was a 300CD nearby which I sat in but my head was against the headliner. I could have bought the coupe cheaper than the sedan because at that time buyers weren't interested in a coupe with a 77hp diesel engine. Later I sat in a '79 coupe and the headroom was much better. The change was confirmed by my salesman. RLE

If you don't want to pay $500 in labor for a mechanic to drill out some parts that are about as hard as a drill bit, you will order a replacement lockset bright and early tomorrow morning. (or buy one out of dealer stock and deal with the fact that the ignition isn't keyed alike with the doors) Just turn it to the left until the engine shuts off and leave it there until you replace it, don't turn it all the way to the leftmost (locked) position.
Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool
Well, for what it's worth on a timeline, Camma is way ahead of all u'uns. But here's the deal. I agree with Dan, sorta. I actually like using the tool, and have access to a whizzzbang machine shop, so I just copied it. ( I have cad drawings that I will share if there is someone who is devinely interested, like willing to send an SASE 8X10 envelope e/w an ounce of postage). Like Dan says, for a one time shot, it is a bit steep. There are other ways to pein the pin, so to speak, and those who have done it know the tolerances on the master link are very very very tight. So one could use a hammer and an anvil and come out just fine. Heck, I bet some okie could even use a pair of channel locks. ( (c: ) So now the original is for sale. Presently folks, for the good of all, I am negotiating with a yet to be named supplier of MB parts who would like to rent it. Then we all get to use it on the cheap. Well, not me, cause I have another (c: . That's cool, because he's close to Camma and although un-named, he could share it with the master craftsman. [MBZ] No torque (was 72 250 no vacuum advance)
Hi all, I moved the vacuum from retard to advance, RPM's are at 1800 at idle and 52' @ 4500 RPM w/Advance just like the manual states. Took her out for a spin. Everything was great until I reached the first stop. Then she stalled. took quite an effort to get her going again. I think because there was a little dip in the road. Brought her back to my place and stopped on the driveway. The driveway is a little incline, about 30'. No matter what I did, the car did not have any power to get up the hill. Flooring the pedal did nothing. i had to put it in reverse to a flat spot and get a running start. Any ideas? Thanks George -- Original message -- Sounds to me like your spark timing is ok...the car should idle at 800-900 rpm. Set the speed with the idle adjustment screws on the carbs. If your idle is abnormally high, make sure the fast-idle cam isn't sticking. It's in the front choke housing. One more obervation regarding the distributor. If I were looking for reliable, (relatively) low-maintenance service from this car, I'd get a Pertronix electronic ignition module to replace the original transistorized ignition. I friend of mine has this setup in his W114 coupe and it is excellent. I find myself fiddling with the points in my car a lot, but I don't drive it that much. If I did, I'd get a Pertronix unit installed. Russ

[MBZ] 240d ignition
Hello all! I am a new old MB fan. Just picked up a 1974 240D Diesel 5sp for $100. After 2 days of buffing and cleaning, I charged up the battery. The key is stuck in the on position so I jumped the starter and she runs like a top! Aside from a little Michigan Rust the car looks pretty good and drives out ok! Pretty Cool! I see others are having key problems. Is there a trick to getting the key to actually come out of the ignition tumbler without dropping the steering column and replacing the ignition? Also, there is a glow plug knob on the left side of the dashboard, what is the knob that lights up by the ash tray? Maybe an original glow plug knob? Ay info is appreciated! BTW, I see some readers like a chuckle now and then so. The husband had just finished reading the book, 'MAN OF THE HOUSE'. He stormed into the kitchen and walked directly up to his wife. Pointing a finger in her face, he said, From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert afterward. Then, after dinner, you are going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair? His wife replied, The f**cking funeral director would be my guess. FRED DE VRIES

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool
Hey, I'm farm boy and you learn to make do. I used to rivet sections into a mower knife all the time and this isn't that much different. There's noting to it if you know what you're doing. Lay the chain in place, slide the master link in, put the centre piece in and use vice grips and a small nut over the pins to force the other link into place. I use two hammers - one at the back of the link and the other to slowly peen the link into place. A study of the factory crimp shows that it really doesn't take much to peen it into place. I very seriously doubt that it will ever come apart. If the smaller crimp from the tool holds it, so will this method. You guys might be surprised at just how many people do this but don't say that they do. No doubt some are unaware of the tool but 500 bucks is too much for it anyway. All you're really doing is riveting some metal - something I learned how to do a long time ago.

Re: [MBZ] 87 190D Front crank seal repair
Robert, Call some indy shops. I had this done for, IIRC, a little over $200 a couple years ago. The torque spec for the flange is huge, something like 310Nm. No strap wrench is going to hold that. I bought the flywheel lock tool off eBay, I would not attempt this job without one. I don't know any way to lock the crankshaft solidly enough to break that bolt free (or re-tighten it to spec, which requires a HUGE torque wrench) without the correct tool. The dealer's price is crazy, though. Should be 3-4 hours tops plus parts. It was pretty much a bolt/wire in affair. Later the Tach amplifier died, so I had to get a new one from Rusty, but it has worked like a champ since then. Took an afternoon to install the whole set up and make it look pretty. A key part is also the magnet mounted in the crank damper, to induce the signal in the pick-up sensor. Looks like a small steel pin, about one quarter inch diameter and sticks up about one quarter inch. Should already be in your crank damper located so that it passes near the pointer. [MBZ] Passed Over for Top Post, Head of Mercedes-Benz Will Resign
August 18, 2005 Passed Over for Top Post, Head of Mercedes-Benz Will Resign By CARTER DOUGHERTY, International Herald Tribune FRANKFURT, Aug. 18 - Eckhard Cordes, the head of the Mercedes-Benz car division who last month lost the race to become DaimlerChrysler's chief executive, will resign from the automaker at the end of the month, the company announced today. Dieter Zetsche, the incoming chief executive, will take personal control of the troubled Mercedes group as of Sept. 1. Mr. Cordes, 54, will leave the company at his own request, Daimler said in a brief statement. Mr. Cordes offered to leave on July 28, soon after Daimler's chief executive, Jürgen E. Schrempp, announced his own departure at the end of the year. Mr. Zetsche, the German executive who brought the company's Chrysler division back to profitability after years of losses, was already scheduled to lead DaimlerChrysler effective Jan. 1, when Mr. Schrempp leaves. He joins General Motors' chief executive, Rick Wagoner, in shouldering multiple roles: Mr. Wagoner assumed direct control of G.M.'s North American operations this year. Daimler, which is based in Stuttgart, German, did not say when a permanent replacement for Mr. Cordes would be named. The early exit of Mr. Cordes will also move up planned changes at Chrysler. With Mr. Zetsche now leaving next month instead of late in the year, Chrysler's chief operating officer, Thomas LaSorda, will assume the leadership of the American automaker on Sept. 1. The departure of Mr. Cordes, the subject of much speculation since Mr. Schrempp's announcement, caps a power struggle that had pitted him against Mr. Zetsche for much of the past year, as industry analysts speculated who would succeed Mr. Schrempp, the chief executive tarnished by the weak performance of Daimler since its merger with Chrysler in 1998. DaimlerChrysler did little to dampen speculation that Mr. Cordes, who assumed control of Mercedes late last year, would not serve indefinitely under Mr. Zetsche. Days after the July 28 announcement, Mr. Cordes exercised options for, and immediately sold, a large quantity of Daimler stock. Daimler's shares crept upward before the announcement of Mr. Schrempp's resignation, and then surged afterward, prompting German securities regulators to begin an investigation into possible insider trading this week. Mr. Cordes, a 29-year employee of Daimler, bequeaths to Mr. Zetsche a car group plagued by quality problems, a severe handicap in the world of luxury automobiles, where customers expect powerful engines and complex electronics to work harmoniously. Mercedes officials said earlier that the worst was over following a huge recall in the United States and the announcement of a restructuring plan for its Smart car division. But weak performance depressed Daimler's profit in the second quarter. Mercedes has also garnered a round of bad publicity over investigations into allegations of bribery at the automaker. The United States Justice Department and German prosecutors are investigating suspicious transactions involving Mercedes's overseas operations.

While I was there my Indy mentioned he knew of an '82 300SD for sale. 295k on the body, trans was rebuilt @180k, the engine was replaced 60k ago with an Adset (thats what he said, what does it mean?). New tires, new radiator and recent paint. Apparently one brake line is bad right now but that will be fixed before sale. The car was bought new by a dealership mechanic and then sold to his son in-law at some later point. Apparently both gentlemen are anal about maintenance. He wants $2k. An '82 would be a w126 right? Nothing on mileage to the 190D 2.2l but a big comfortable car I guess. I'll call the guy tomorrow and get the full scoop but what does the collective wisdom say? Adsit is a supplier of used Mercedes parts. When former customers have discussed with me their degree of satisfaction with the parts and service Adsit provided, about 8 out of ten have been VERY dissatisfied. I guess it's hard to do anything 100%! The reports I've received include that used parts were overpriced considering their condition and rebuilt parts were poorly rebuilt AND way overpriced considering the quality of the rebuild. Customers that were dissatisfied have found it virtually impossible to get refunds. That's all according to others. I have NEVER done business with them so these reports are ALL secondhand. The Star magazine (published by the Me recedes Club of America) stopped accepting ads from them many years ago after receiving a very large number of complaints that were not being addressed. I would NOT consider an Adsit engine in a car to be desirable and would reduce the offering price by 20-30% on that basis alone! [MBZ] 72 250 no vacuum advance
Shipmates, This thread reminds me of an old Datsun that I tuned once. I only had a Haynes manual for it. Procedure for setting the timing was trial and error. Make a mark on the distributer and one on the mount, so that you can quickly make an adjustment + or - by sight. Time a run from 0-60, tweak, time another run, tweak, and repeat until happy. Leave it where the performance was best. Not a very fast way to do it, but no special tools required. Leave all the vacuum connections in place. In the case of the particular car that started this thread, I realize that first you've got to get it fixed to the point of reaching 60mph, but I'll bet that will be very soon. One can use the same method if interested in setting timing for best fuel mileage, IF you can consistently get same fuel quality from tank to tank, and have the patience to adjust the timing every time you fill up the tank. To show the shift in priorities, go to the MBUSA website. If you have an account, go to the owners online section, then more news and events, then Momentum magazine, then choose the fall 2004 edition and then click on picture perfect and watch a short video on the Koschels's and their 1970 280SE with over i million miles. Compare this to the rest of the site which focuses almost entirely on luxury and speed. There has been a total shift in marketing and perhaps even ideology. It's a shame. I like AMG's that go 0-60 in 2.8 seconds too, but that's one market. MB's were never cheap, nor should they be, but you once were sure that your benz coupe/sedan/SL was the best (or nearly) that money could buy...not even close anymore. If I had to buy a new car, I would buy a Toyota. And that sucks b/c I would certainly rather to buy an MB. What worries me is when the cars that most of us have are very hard to find (10 years)...then what - a 320 CDI that is wired like the space shittle? (pun intended). Schrempp's resignation, and then

No black smoke. Mike Boerner suggested it might be the float. I'll be checking that tonight. Any other suggestions? Thanks George -- Original message -- George, how did the exhaust look? Were you getting any black smoke with the car under load? I just wonder if your ignition system has troubles other than spark timing. ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] For new parts see www.buymbparts.com For repairs see www.oldworldauto.com To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net

Unfortunately, I have to concur. I have a 20 year old Mercedes. That 123 was the most reliable, longest service car of it's day. I have a 10 year old Mercedes. That 124 was the most reliable, longest service car of it's day. When it came time to buy a new car for my wife last year, I took one quick look at the Mercedes offering, and passed. George, are you certain your float level is set to spec? and that the float valves open and there are no dead spiders in there (don't ask why I would check there, but I found a dead one inside the valve once. sounds like low/no fuel. do the accel pump jets squirt fuel when you open the throttle? also check the clear fuel filter to see if fuel is being moved, and the fuel return valve to make sure it's not stuck open (I think it only opens at idle) Mike Boerner 300SDL 300D, 1970 280S/8 sold in 1985

I will cheerfully send an envelope and postage as well for a set of the drawings. Where would I send it?
