Re: [MBZ] Using vacuum to set timing

2005-08-24 Thread Tom Hargrave
George,

You can use vacuum to set a your idle mixture and your timing.

Concerning your idle mixture:
You adjust your idle mixture down until your vacuum just starts to drop off
them you adjust it up until your vacuum just starts to drop off. The correct
setting is in the middle of the two.

Concerning your timing:
You loosen the distributor and move it back forth until the maximum vacuum
is reached.
Then you lock down the distributor go for a short test drive while
listening for detonation.
Adjust the timing back test drive until you hear no detonation, then set
your timing back another 2 degrees.
This may take several test drives.
Set your idle speed to where it belongs.

Notes:
You need to reset your idle mixture after setting your timing.
This procedure assumes you are running the correct octane gas for the car
its not a fix for running lower grade gas then the engine was designed for.

Thanks,

Subject: [MBZ] Using vacuum to set timing

Hi all,

I have heard of a way to set the timing without a vacuum light. Supposedly
it works great for older beasts that the timing marks don't always align.

My understanding is, hook up a vacuum gauge and turn distributor until you
find the most vacuum then retard it be 2 of vacuum.

Anybody try this?

I have a simple question. Do you adjust the idle as you move the
distributor? or once you have found the most vacuum -2 then set the idle
speed?

Thanks

George

Spray a few shots of WD-40 into the air intake. Turn the glow plugs on and
be sure they are working, easy on the '80 model. Heat the glow plugs eight
or ten times. Turn the key until the engine starts or the battery drains.
Often the engine will fire the cylinders in succession and you may have to
hold the key on start until all five cylinders have fired.

I find, on both Mercedes and VW diesels I've driven, it's also helpful
to hold the accellerator down part way while cranking. 1/4 throttle is
usually plenty. The idea is to raise the idle speed enough to keep it
from dying until all the cylinders light off, so you should back off as
the engine picks up speed. I had a tired VW diesel for a while that
would never start cold unless you held 1/2 throttle.

2005-08-24 Thread Royce Engler
Hi Dennis,

I started my '85 300TD for a couple of years that way when it refused to
start. In fact, I used to carry a short length of battery cable to jump
directly from the battery to those terminals. I don't think I ever did any
damage. I finally determined that the problem was the solenoid on the
starter, the result of buying cheap rebuilt starters at the McParts places.
When I figured that out, I bought a brand new Genuwyne Bosch starter that
spins the engine faster and starts much better. Haven't had a problem
since.

This weekend I went out to my car, an 84 300SD and when I turned the key I
got nothing. I have a new battery in it. The headlights did not dim when I
turned the key and I was able to start the car by turning on the ignition
and jumping across the terminals in the box on the passenger side of the car
under the hood. The next time I tried to start the car it started okay.
Now I have to trace what is the problem the next time it happens. My
question is when I jump the car through the box under the hood does that
bypass the ignition switch? I'm thinking that it must be either the
ignition switch or the starter lockout switch on the transmission.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] Oh joy! Another oil thread!

2005-08-24 Thread OK Don
To corroborate Dave's statement - the oil analysis on my 300SDL
(287,000 miles) at 10,211 miles on Mobil1 indicated 0.5% soot. I'm
about to hit another 10k miles, and will get another analysis done. I
am VERY impressed with the cold starting of the engines with Mobil1 -
having used dino oil for 20 years and having to plug in the block
heater before switching.

On 8/23/05, Dave M. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 1) All Mobil-1 oils can suspend 2% soot, which is when Mercedes
 recommends changing the oil anyway.

 2) Every engine's soot production is different. My 617 engine would
reach that 2% limit by 5-7kmi, while my 603's are maybe 1% at 10kmi.
You need to test YOUR engine to find out when to change the oil.
Changing synthetic every 10-15k vs dino every 5k is actually cheaper
when you factor in the cost of filters your time, and if you buy the
 5qt jugs at Mall-Wart (of 5W-40) for $20.

Looked at my Performance Parts catalog (sorry Rusty, but/and I just use it

Cool,

Thx Tom,

BTW the dealer manual states 91 RON, I read somewhere that 87 octane is 91 RON.
Is that correct?

Thanks

George

-- Original message --

You loosen the distributor and move it back forth until the maximum vacuum is
reached.
Then you lock down the distributor go for a short test drive while listening
for detonation.
Adjust the timing back test drive until you hear no detonation, then set your
timing back another 2 degrees.
This may take several test drives.
Set your idle speed to where it belongs.

Notes:
You need to reset your idle mixture after setting your timing.
This procedure assumes you are running the correct octane gas for the car its
not a fix for running lower grade gas then the engine was designed for.

Hi all,

I have heard of a way to set the timing without a vacuum light. Supposedly it
works great for older beasts that the timing marks don't always align.

My understanding is, hook up a vacuum gauge and turn distributor until you find
the most vacuum then retard it be 2 of vacuum.

Anybody try this?

I have a simple question. Do you adjust the idle as you move the distributor?
or once you have found the most vacuum -2 then set the idle speed?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Using vacuum to set timing

2005-08-24 Thread Tom Hargrave
George,

RON stands for the calculated octane rating, based on the chemical makeup of
the gas. The R in RON stands for research.

MON stands for the actual octane rating derived from running the same fuel
in a special test engine in a controlled environment. The M in MON stands
for motor.

The ON stands for, as you probably already know, Octane Rating.

In short, modern octane ratings are an average of the two and RON always
calculates higher than MON. But you can't say that 87 Octane is the same as
91 RON, it depends on the fuel and how close RON MON are.

Cool,

Thx Tom,

BTW the dealer manual states 91 RON, I read somewhere that 87 octane is 91
RON. Is that correct?

Thanks

-- Original message --

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Subject: [MBZ] Using vacuum to set timing

Hi all,

I have heard of a way to set the timing without a vacuum light. Supposedly
it works great for older beasts that the timing marks don't always align.

My understanding is, hook up a vacuum gauge and turn distributor until you
find the most vacuum then retard it be 2 of vacuum.

Anybody try this?

I have a simple question. Do you adjust the idle as you move the
distributor? or once you have found the most vacuum -2 then set the idle
speed?

Thanks

George

Re: [MBZ] strange noise (revisited)

2005-08-24 Thread Steve MacSween
I was talking about this sort of stuff with the counter guy at the local
import parts shop today. They have an associated German-born wrench who goes
to Germany twice a year to buy used cars and used engines, etc., and he just
got back and told them the parts prices in North America are now HUGELY
higher than in Europe, nothing like he has ever seen in about 8 years of
making these trips. Even basics like filters, small items.

This leaves us with two alternative conclusions: either the Euro mfrs,
including Bosch, are taking the piss out of us in North America so as to
subsidize their home operations (nothing new, VW and Audi got away with this
for decades), or they are selling their NOW OFFSHORE PRODUCED products at
fair market in Europe and gouging here.

The parts guy was telling me even the people in the biz are getting
concerned as they aren't seeing any benefit from this, in fact the parts
stream for cars older than maybe 10 years seems to be choking on even
fast-moving parts (supply dries up from time to time, temporarily, for no
apparent reason).

He said that WorldPac seems to be the worst. They have an account, but have
hardly ordered for a year as every time they query, they can hardly believe
what they see -- they source elsewhere, though it generally takes a lot
longer to get the part.

Hurst, you dawn with what this guy is sayin', dude? We're a large geographic
market with a small market base to serve, up here in Canada, so it may not
be quite the same in the States.

I probably overpayed. But my rule of thumb is to call Rusty. If I find that
he has jacked up his prices and is screwing us, then I will go elsewhere.
Until then it is nice to know I can pick up the phone and talk to someone
who knows my car much better than I do. But of course, sometimes Gary
answers the phone. :-)

[MBZ] Clean those condensors radiators!

2005-08-24 Thread Dave M.
My electric auxiliary fan had been making more noise than usual this
year, so I finally got around to changing it (sure is nice to have a
parts car to swipe this stuff from, lol... and, uh, sorry Rusty!)
Anyway, I found the mother of all dust bunnies hiding behind the fan:

http://www.w124performance.com/images/W124_stuff/condenser_crud.jpg

There was a decent amount of bug parts everywhere else too. I picked
out all the big stuff, brushed the fins with a toothbrush, un-bent the
fins with a small screwdriver, and then blew things clean with
compressed air (sorry, forgot to take an after photo.) I had the
radiator out this past winter when the engine was pulled so I know
things were clean betwixt that and the condenser, but if you have
never pulled your radiator, TRUST ME, there is a pile of crap hidden
that will shock you. This affects both cooling system performance as
well as A/C performance, so it's worth a look!

:-)

Best regards,

Re: [MBZ] strange noise (revisited)

That's kind of how it works. MB basically said, '' Lizen you peple, ezer
you zell exclusivly to us or ve von't deal vith you. No moore zeling to WD's
or rezellers. ''

So, some OE companies went along with this because the market share was so
small anyway for some older car parts. The Classic centres scooped up what's
left and now ignition mods are $3,000.00 CDN for a 560 SEL. Not any better
price in the States either. No one else makes them and they can't be fixed
from what I'm told. It's either used or new.

Simple things like pistons for some cars in some sizes are almost dried up
in the reseller market. All this stuff has been subbed over to the Classic
centres. MB dealers have to order from them and the discounts are less than
on late model parts so you won't see any great pricing. All of this makes it
harder for you your guy to get you certain parts at good prices. This only
applies to certain parts at certain times but many things have gone up in
price 3 or 4 times in the last year or two. I an effort to keep fast moving
parts profitable, they moved some production to cheaper labour markets.
I call this way of doing things, '' The race to bottom .''

So yeah, you can probably find the part but it might be close the full list
price sometimes.

Kaleb, if Mike ever offers you a car, RUN don't walk, dude. I had to listen
to my buddy with the tow car/tow dolly make wisecracks about $100 sunken
barges all the way down. After he got finished unhooking the driveshaft, he
had a lot less to say.

Let's put it this way. Canada Customs held us at the border for over two
hours, because they would not believe the car could have been bought for
$100. Man were they pissed when they had to cave in and only charge duty/tax
on the bill of sale price.

It's either gonna get an OM616 with a 4 speed, or (outside chance) a

Sure. He's the reverse of the idiots who post ads for cars as 'no rust'. He
must have seen a spot somewhere and decided he wouldn't have time to get it
ready for Amelia Island, LoL.

You should see the winner my bud and I just collected from Toronto, a 126 SD
we wanted for the motor mostly (thank god). The guy posted it on the VW
Vortex bulletin board, got lots of inquiries and kept swearing earnestly how
good it was, etc.

Lawd, Greg went to get it without me, calls me at midnite from his cell:
uh, you're not going to be too happy with this one... (we generally have
good luck on our drag-back deals). I said hell, give him the cash and bring
it back anyway.

First off, the guy must be an artiste with a digital camera. Say no more,
say no more, about the paint (artful brush strokes over the rust on the
doors).

Car has a good 6 inches of frame on one side, 14 inches on the other,
totally rotted -- literally would need whole new sections, not enough to
patch to convince anyone not legally blind. Jack points are a work of bondo
art, not much else. Rear subframe is mostly bolted to hope and charity. But
get this, PRISTINE sway bar mounts. Not a hint of rot.

Sigh. So it goes. Damn but those 126s take up a lot of lawn.

[MBZ] proper and best fluids

2005-08-24 Thread Enigma2be2
I am new to the list and have a few questions. I own two 1984 300D Turbos
with about 115,000 each on them (very good condition, purchased both from
ladies
that were original owners). I am working on both to try to gain efficientcy
and longevity. What are the very best fluids to use for oil, transmission and
rear end? I have seen mobile 1 talked about. Will 15-50 extended be good? I
also
have a product that has done wonders for the cooling. My air is actually cold
which I hear is not too normal for these cars.

[MBZ] More on the '82 300SD

2005-08-24 Thread Curt Raymond
I called the guy about the 300SD I mentioned last week.
Turns out its 297kmi, had the trans rebuilt at 186k, Adsit engine at 260k for
which he paid $4500.
The Good: new Tires, and radiator.
The Bad: one rear brake caliper is frozen, one rear brake line is ruptured,
battery is dead, A/C leaks and has no charge.
The Ugly: The car has sat for something like 2 years, the repaint may have some
rust spots beginning but he hasn't checked carefully. During the winter it was
garaged but sat out in the summer.
He wants $2,000 for what I think is more like a $1,200 car. I may go up and see
it and see how insulted he'd get with an $800 offer.

Opinions?

You need to test YOUR engine to find out when to change the oil.
Changing synthetic every 10-15k vs dino every 5k is actually cheaper
when you factor in the cost of filters your time, and if you buy the
 5qt jugs at Mall-Wart (of 5W-40) for $20.

Thanks again, Mike.

yea, its probably a 600-800 car.

Curt Raymond wrote:

I called the guy about the 300SD I mentioned last week.
Turns out its 297kmi, had the trans rebuilt at 186k, Adsit engine at
260k for which he paid $4500.

The Good: new Tires, and radiator.
The Bad: one rear brake caliper is frozen, one rear brake line is
ruptured, battery is dead, A/C leaks and has no charge.
The Ugly: The car has sat for something like 2 years, the repaint may
have some rust spots beginning but he hasn't checked carefully. During
the winter it was garaged but sat out in the summer.
He wants $2,000 for what I think is more like a $1,200 car. I may go up
and see it and see how insulted he'd get with an $800 offer.

Opinions?

To corroborate Dave's statement - the oil analysis on my 300SDL

about to hit another 10k miles, and will get another analysis done. I
am VERY impressed with the cold starting of the engines with Mobil1 -
having used dino oil for 20 years and having to plug in the block
heater before switching.

Re: [MBZ] proper and best fluids

2005-08-24 Thread DElliott%SWS

Gary,

Welcome to the list ! You asked about what are good fluids to use. There
is not a consensus of which motor oil to use but I think that the below
suggestions would be good choices. Some people seem to think that regular
oil is fine and have had good results with it.

motor oil - Mobil 1 5w-40 (or any weight)
transmission - auto - dextron III, any brand, some use Mobil 1 for more
consistent shifting in the Winter.
rear end - Mobil 1 75-90 w
radiator - Zerex G-05 or Mercedes Fluid

Don't forget to change your powersteering filter and use the same dextron
III to fill. Also change your brake fluid.

Good Luck,

Re: [MBZ] Good Mercedes Shop in Austin,TX

2005-08-24 Thread Gary Thompson
They've been around for a while. I had never heard of them either
until they advertised a car for sale on Autotrader a couple of years
ago. Went in and spoke to several of the guys there, and they seemed
fairly knowledgeable about the older diesels. They also just happened
to have a 124 completely torn apart in one of the bays for an
evaporator-ectomy. I found this very informative, since I was
considering doing this job myself on mine. After seeing the aftermath,
I figured I'd wait awhile. Two years later, and I'm still sweating in
the summer...

Like I said, I haven't gone any farther than to buy a few parts off
them. If I needed someone to work on an old diesel, I'd probably call
Ben first, just to see if he had a recommendation.

[MBZ] Sucking oil through dipstick

2005-08-24 Thread 72benz250
Hi all,

I was at autozone the other day and in came a guy withe a small 2 gallon
canister with a weird contraption on it.

Said it was a old r-12 canister with a connector that you apply shop air to it
and it creates a vacuum. He used it to pull all the oil out of his engine that
way. Looked like it used a venturi effect.

I thought that was pretty slick, You could use it to pull brake fuild or
transmission fluid or anything else. Definately make less of a mess for me.

Has anyone built one of these? I'm sure there are plans somewhere on the
internet but suck vacuum oil dipstick crackcase are very common in the
automotive world and google has a ton of links I'm going through.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks
