Re: [MBZ] 79 450SL oil change ?s
Mobil 1 in either 10W30 or 15W50 will work fine -- for summer, I'd definitely use the 15W50. The 0W40 is probably too thin. The oil filter canister sticks straight down just in front of the cross-member on the passenger side. You must remove the center bolt and drop the canister to get the filter out, it's messy. Easy to reach, though. Make sure you put the filter in right side up, it will go in both ways and if you put it in upsidedown, you get unfiltered oil circulating. Spring stays in the bottom of the canister, and the bolt will too. Peter

[MBZ] Compression Tester 240D
Thank you Marshall. I will warm it up before I check it. Will removing the glow plugs while they are hot damage the threads? John I. Any advice on this procedure would be very much appreciated. Mercedes set acceptable pressures for NEW engines in the 24-30 bar range (350-435 psi). Most used engines in good conditions will meet or even exceed these numbers. The lower limit that Mercedes sets is 18 bar (260 psi) but in fact anything much below 20-21 bar (290-305 psi) will likely be VERY hard to start in cold weather. All of the cylinders within the engine must be within 3 bar (44 psi)! Before testing, valves MUST be checked to insure that none are tight. Tight valves of course lower compression. These measurements should be made with the engine at operating temperature. Cold compression tests will be MUCH more variable and much less useful in their diagnostic relevance. Marshall

Just a sec... anything xW-30 is really too thin, and not approved for summer use at least in any MB owner's manual I've seen. In order, the preferred M-1 weights would be 5W-40, 15W-50, and (least preferred) 0W-40. All the other stuff (xW-30 or xW-20) is for little high-revving ricer motors, not MB engines (at least through the 90's.) =) -- Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 18:06:02 -0600 From: Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 79 450SL oil change ?s Mobil 1 in either 10W30 or 15W50 will work fine -- for summer, I'd definitely use the 15W50. Even running it for 20-30 sec will warm the engine enough to prevent proper, even adjustment. [MBZ] Carfax LESSONS LEARNED
Just for your info Carfax has some flaws. I bought a 1981 MB 240D last November, advertised with 71,000 miles. Did a car fax check, was fine, mileage is confirmed ok. Shipped her cross country. With in five minutes of having it home rifled through glove box. Found old maintenance records as well as the name address of the second owner who owned car for 1987-2004 years. He informed me of the whole history of the auto, as well as sending me a copy of the odometer (should be called true mileage) disclosure form. Over 250,000 miles. The 1987-2004 Owner of the car sent it to me. Trouble was this owner who I spoke with replaced odometer with a new one set to 0 70K miles or so ago and never renewed the title/registration in his state. Car fax just went by the latest registration. which was from the guy I bought it from. He owned the car for a month or so. Just a sea story and word of caution: extreme claims of low mileage require extreme proof Look for maintenance records, which matach up mileage and good service practices, where the car was serviced, and talk to past owners. Talk to past mechanics. Do not be bashfull. Push for the information. It took me over a year and many visits to the court to resolve my issue. It was a real battle. I thought I had an out with Carfax's buy back guarantee. They just laughed at me. Since it was not properly retitled when the odometer was changed out they were not liable. Beware... [MBZ] The tire saga continues...
To recap the story so far: To start with, the car went down the road straight as an arrow, but vibrated at certain speeds. Also, it had been 10,000 miles, so I figured it was time to have the tires rotated. I went to Les Schwab and had the tires balanced and rotated. The car immediately started pulling hard to the right. Went back to Les Schwab. They swapped the two front tires, and the car started pulling to the left, suggesting a bad tire. (Getting it replaced under warranty isn't an option, since the chain I originally bought the tires from doesn't have a presence in Washington.) Today, I took it back again and they replaced the left front tire. The old left front became the spare. It *still* pulls to the left. At this point, I figure the only thing left (besides just un-rotating the tires) is to swap the spare (which used to be the left front) with the right front, on the theory that they've simply replaced the wrong tire.
Re: [MBZ] will maladjusted valves reduce fuel economy?
Absolutely. Will also cause hard starts, excessive smoke, and injector knock. Also, burnt valves eventually. Peter
Re: [MBZ] 300D timing chain replacement
Sure can. If you are rich (somewhat unlikely if you are driving a 77 300D) you can buy the chain guide that bolts on and holds the chain in place on the cam sprocket. If you are poor like me, just use wire ties or some vise grips (you need three) to clamp the chain to the sprocket. It is also possible to drop BOTH ends of the chain and still end up OK, but I would recommend avoiding doing so Peter

Could be -- the tire will pull away from the side that is bigger at speed, so if the right tire was causing a pull to the left instead of the right... If one is bad, the others are probably close behind. Peter

[MBZ] Vacuum shutoff saga
My brother and I finally got around to replacing the shutoff solenoid in his 75 300D (W115 chassis). This is an MW pump with manual altitude correction. To change the solenoid, you must remove the rear cover of the pump (five screws) since the solenoid is held in place by two screws from the inside and the top screw for the cover (through which you can measure the pump rack travel). Hans laughed at us and said have fun, that one is a real pain when we bought the solenoid from him. He's right, it is. First fun part was getting to the back of the IP -- not much room in that car. Had to remove the rear pair of injection lines, drain the rad, and drain the head by removing the heater supply hose, then removing the last two glow plugs (only the rear one really needs to come out, but Sam has burned out two rear GP in the last month, and I wanted to check the next plug up for shorts). Also pulled the main vac line off the booster to get it out of the way too. Next PITA is getting.the slotted head screws out -- this particular job has been done before on this car, so all the heads have huge burrs from sloppy work. Sam has a wonderful sideways screwdriver made by Miller's Falls he got with some machinist tools some years back. With it, we got all the screws out, some from underneath as there isn't room up top. We bought new cap screws and ditched the old slot heads. After juggling around a while, we got the new servo installed in what we though was the correct location (it's actually easy on this pump, as the hook is just behind the rack lever, no slot or anything, but we didn't know that and opened up the top cover anyway), and proceded to replace the vac pump diaphram. Glad we did, but that meant pulling the engine fan and upper radiator hose, too. Got everything correctly installed again and tried to start it. No go -- cranks fine, but no start. Not even any diesel smoke. Big bummer, did we wreck the IP? Pulled the top cover off, solenoid lever looks wrong, decided it was dragging on the rack lever instead of in front of it as the rack could be shoved forward with a screwdriver, so we messed around a little and then applied vac to the shutoff with the MitiVac again. Ha, it's stuck, so off the cover comes again (after removing the injection lines, glow plug, and vac line again). This time we actually found the problem. The servo was sticking down when vac was applied, so the rack was in the stop position all the time. Easy fix, the actuating arm was slightly bent. Straightened that out and everything works fine. Took almost 5 hours, though Peter
Re: [MBZ] (OT) I'm a new father
I would love to have one -- the DS-21 had the lowest drag coefficient of any production car for a long time, and may still for that matter -- very streamlined with a pronounced taper to the rear. Single spoke steering wheel and the starter switch is on the shift lever (push past Park) so you cannot start it in gear. Oh well, I need another car like I need another hole in my head! Peter

Howdy -- Is the Topsider appropriate to use for removing ATF from a 722.1 AT? Since MB stopped putting drain plugs on the AT oil pans it tends to be a little messy to loosen/remove the bolts and crack the pan enough for the ATF to run out. Not necessarily! In 1982, the test drive for the first Mercedes we ever purchased (a 1973 model 280) was done at night and consisted of driving one block, hanging a u-turn and returning to the guy's home. We did examine the car under a streetlight, however. Although the seller was a shady Iranian who demanded cash, and the car had NO paperwork, it seemed to run fine so we purchased it (financed by the bank) for $4900 (he was asking $5500). [MBZ] Cleaning engine, any words of caution?
I'm planning on cleaning my engine...it's got the usual spills and stains on the block, etc, and its tough to tell which is new and which is old. On a gas powered car, I'd just spray it with Engine Brite, wait 15 minutes and hose it down. Is there anything special I need to be aware of with regard to the diesel? Keep water away from the IP? Transmission? TIA, Lee '93 300D 2.5L turbodiesel 178K

I used the $2 Oil Sucker on my old Cadillac and Blazer, sucker hose went right down to the bottom of the pan and cleaned it out very well. Don't know if the sucker tube can get down to the bottom of the Benz trans, or if the filler tube goes to the bottom (I seem to recall it does not, from when I changed fluid on my car). Tom Hargrave wrote: Actually, if I'm thinking if the same one, the 3.8 was Buick. And it was a great engine. You are right Tom. The 3.8 was originally designed by Buick. It had many manifestations. It was used in the Buick Regal in the early 80's (80-83 I think). It was also some of the oldsmobiles and Pontiacs. In the early generation, it was a dog and a lousy engine. In 1985, Gm put it into the Olds 98 C body. 1985 was the first year that it had fuel injection. The 85 had lots of problems with timing chains (ask me how I know). They used the same engine in 86 and 87 in the olds 98 and the Buick Park Avenue. Then in 88 they put a harmonic balancer on it and called it the 3800. This was the first generation of the fantastic engines. By 1990, it was perfected and it was an amazing performer. GM discovered this engine could be used in lots of platforms. They put it in the Bonneville, 98, park avenue, 88, and others. Then they started putting it in some of the vans and the Monte Carlo (as an option over the tired old 3.1 m motor). Then in 94 or 95 they continued to use it and despite it near flawless performance, they decided to change it. They replace the metal intake with a plastic intake which promptly failed and leaked coolant. Overall, they were great engines. I think the best GM ever made. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] 300D timing chain replacement
I've always done the chain solo. I like to tie or vicegrip the chain to the cam sprocket before breaking a link. I also tie a small wire to each side of the chain before i break it. I have learned to stuff rags in the chaincase cavity in case you DO drop something. (Need to pull the rags out before you actually roll in the new chain.) I once dropped the center link down a OM621. It wedged between the teeth of the crank sprocket. I ended up having to take the engine out and flip it over and pull the pan. Ruined my day! That was probably about the 5th chain i replaced, and i got sloppy. Never hurry or get sloppy messing with the chain. Many years ago i acquired a medical locking forceps that has relief behind the jaws. I can lock it on one side of the chain, then if i drop it, the forceps keeps it from going too far, and gives me a handle to pick it up with. We have far more IT geeks on this list than medicos, so a tool like this is probably not available to most of us. Pull the plugs or injectors to get the engine to turn freely. On the 621, 615-617 I might pull the cam followers also, so the cam doesn't jump, but this is not necessary if you are careful. If my memory is correct, the cam jumping was what caused me to loose the piece of link into the guts of the 621. (this is a good time to get the nozzles tested!) Generally, if it needs a chain, it needs nozzles. ~300k for OM 60x id guess. I did this to my 603 at 300K I still prefer the repair link to the riveted link. As long as you put it together right they never come off. You have to get the spring keeper in just right, and check it. I really like the bungie cord trick! Learned something new! Re: [MBZ] horryfying discovery at EGR valve
A BB will disable the valve but will not prevent exhaust recirculation if the valve does not perfectly seat. With the crud in there I saw, it will most likely not. A simple sheet metal plate inserted between the valve flange and the manifold will positively stop that crud. All one needs is a pair of tin snips, a soup can and the wrenches (4mm Allen and a 11mm socket). On 11/10/05, Trampas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Put a BB in the vacuum line going to EGR. Re: [MBZ] Topsider for AT??
With the ATF being a very thin fluid, adapting a smaller OD tube (1/4) to the sucker will let you go down the dipstick tube. On 11/10/05, Rich Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I used the $2 Oil Sucker on my old Cadillac and Blazer, sucker hose went right down to the bottom of the pan and cleaned it out very well. Don't know if the sucker tube can get down to the bottom of the Benz trans, or if the filler tube goes to the bottom (I seem to recall it does not, from when I changed fluid on my car). It does work well on the power steering pump, brake reservoir, etc. --R Woodlandtaylors wrote: I've used the top-sider method to get most of the transmission fluid out prior to dropping the pan. Since MB stopped putting drain plugs on the AT oil pans it tends to be a little messy to loosen/remove the bolts and crack the pan enough for the ATF to run out. I was thinking I could vacuum the ATF out then go under the car and remove the pan, replace the filter and drain the torque converter. Sound like a plan? Sorry. Make this a 5mm Allen. On 11/10/05, Hans Neureiter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: A BB will disable the valve but will not prevent exhaust recirculation if the valve does not perfectly seat.
