Yes, Larry - no valve periodic adjustments needed. The down side is that
you don't get the "free look" at the timing chain as you would on a 617! In
my case, the valve cover hasn't been off in 221k miles!

Bob - my experience with Diesel MBs is that if they are in good condition,
they will only use a quart every 3-5k miles (or so). If more than that,
look for leaks. If no leaks and the consumption is greater than above, then
Dino probably makes economic sense in moderate to warm climates, IMO.

Let's say your pig does burn a lot of oil. How reasonable is it to use
costly synthetic vice dino juice...since neither is staying in the engine

Trying the easiest fixes first, I rolled the car out of the garage, started

I turned off the engine, put it in gear, and bumped the starter. After a
number of bumps which made the car lurch there was a loud crack. I put it

[MBZ] Photos of W124 evaporator cleaning

2006-02-18 Thread Dave M.
Hi all,

I cleaned the evaporator on my 300E recently, after doing the same job
on my 300D a month earlier. I had previously cleaned this evaporator
with a brush and vacuum, as one half was so filthy I don't know if any
air was actually flowing through! I figured that since I had to pull
the wiper out to replace the windshield, I might as well pull the
blower too and use the foam cleaner. Here are some photos of before,
during, and after. The camera doesn't show the difference very well,

Every Monark glow plug I've ever tried (some 12-14 of 'em) have failed

Jim Cathey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > 1. there is oil in both vacuum lines

Vacuum shutoff at injection pump is leaking, and sucking engine
oil into the vacuum system. NOT GOOD! You must replace the
shutoff, and you must flush the oil out of wherever it has
migrated to or the oil will eat the rubber hoses and seals,
assuming it hasn't already. The shutoff valve at the key
lock may be toast already. But...

> 2. the oil dripped on the lower plastic panel
> 3. the oil dripped onto the carpet

Fun cleanup.

These may be unrelated symptoms. That being set to Defrost lets the car
shut off sort of indicates that the ACC pods may be torn as well.
Defrost
results in no vacuum actuation of any of the ACC pods. This is a
separate
issue, though they can certainly act interrelated. If this has the
ECACCSFH
(Evil Chrysler ACC System From Hell) I don't know as much about it.

> 6. transmission shifts EXTREMELY smoothly, so that part of the
> vacuum system must be working fine

Not necessarily. Too smooth is bad, it results in extra clutch wear.
Unhook the line to the tranny, and cap it off on the engine side.
(Line to tranny should be open.) It should result in very hard shifts.
If not, the tranny is already well down the old familiar road.

> 7. no other vacuum lines have oil in them

Good.

> 8. This is a 1980 300D with 113,000 miles

It's time. Age, not usually miles is at work here.

> Is it possible the vacuum pump is leaking oil only into 2 lines?

Not really. They can also leak oil into the lines, but it tends
to migrate everywhere. Knock down the problems as you find them.
Your pump may also leak, but there's no need to go there without
evidence. Flushing the oil out of the existing fouled lines will
give you should-be-clean lines to examine later.

Rob if I may, my theory

"Tom brings up a point I've often wondered about.
Let's say your pig does burn a lot of oil. How reasonable is it to use
costly synthetic vice dino juice...since neither is staying in the engine
very long?"

I figure the surface to surface real time lubrication that is going on with
the material used (steel pistons/cylinders and synthetic oil) is what counts
not how long it stays in there. I burn about a quart every 1000 miles +/-
which for me is around 3 to 5 quarts per month (good news has not gotten any
worse in the last 90K miles been using synthetics) I figure with fuel at
$2.50 a gallon, oil at $6.00 a quart is not so bad if the longevity of the
engine is increases and keeps me out of buying a new $25K car. I change oil
and filter every 10,000 miles like religion. $25K buys allot of oil and
maintenance.

Well, it performed flawlessly today - around Albuquerque with a max
speed of 45. we spent the day touring the university and visiting the
mechanical engineering department. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.
I'm thinking a questionable tank of fuel, probably froma small station
in Tucumcari.

Kaleb,
Thanks for the link, nice group of people indeed.

So, which one are you, the one with reddish~brownish hair!? I apologize if
that was not you, it is just that gentleman looked like a Kaleb to me.
Also, I failed to spot the sleepless gentleman (AKA LT Don)! Not one of the
pictured attendees looked less than presentable.

I also, noticed someone was using a tow dolly, how safe/unsafe are they
compared to a car trailer and is one easier to handle/backup than the other?
I was told by someone, that a car dolly is not suitable for a car/truck with
an automatic transmission unless something is done to the
transmission/differential(or unless the vehicle is towed backwards!!) Do any
of you know if this is true and to what extent and what it is that needs to
be done as not to harm the transmission?

Thank you all,

Omar.

Hahahahahahaha! It's amazing the claims of MPG and of money spent to
convert to biodiesel when all it takes is viton fuel lines and only when
running B100. One is better off hunting in the Southwest or just about
anywhere other than the rust belt for a good MB diesel at a reasonable
price.

Berryman, long time you go away nice to see you back in the

It stopped as fast as it started. Today it seems fine. Odd.

Okay, so this isn't a prechamber carboning issue, or a bad rings issue, or
is it all part of the picture?

Cause the question is, what's the oil doing up in the injector, to begin
with? It was oil, not diesel, trust me there was a LOT and it stank big time
when it ran down the block.

I was planning the pull the injectors after the winter, anyway, and getting
them rebuilt.

They're plenty safe, so far as I know. You basically cannot back them
up, unless you're quite good at it. It's really two trailers in a row
you're towing.

I was told by someone, that a car dolly is not suitable for a
car/truck with

an automatic transmission unless something is done to the
transmission/differential(or unless the vehicle is towed backwards!!)
Do any
of you know if this is true and to what extent and what it is that
needs to

be done as not to harm the transmission?

There is basically nothing made that I know of that can have an
automatic tranny and be towed any significant distance or speed
with the driven wheels down, _unless_ it has a transfer case with
a Neutral setting. (Big pickups, in other words.) FWD cars are
easy, just put the driven (front) wheels on the dolly. For RWD,
the rear wheels have to be on the dolly, but then you've got to
freeze the steering mechanism or risk a whip-induced wreck. Or,
put the front wheels on and drop the driveshaft.

Trailers are brainless. Lash car on and go. That's why they're
so popular.

I'll try to salvage the car. I think the front frame can be straightened.

Geo Trakkers were popular to tow behind motorhomes for quite a while,
for exactly that reason. They had part-time 4WD with a transfer case.
You often saw them being towed on all four wheels, with a tow bar.

Re: [MBZ] Photos of W124 evaporator cleaning

2006-02-18 Thread Dave M.
James,

I used Nu-Calgon Evap Foam, from the local HVAC wholesaler for about
$7 per can. One can will clean two evaporators, foaming them down
maybe a half-dozen times each. A little goes a long way with this
stuff. I used a garden sprayer with water to rinse it out, although
they claim it's not required (the condensate will rinse it, I guess,
during A/C operation.) Here's a flyer for the cleaner:

I'd think our cars could be towed 4 down as our trannys have rear
pumps to lube the gearbox. Most Saturn's can be towed 4 down, very
popular with motor home crowd for that reason.

Well, its 12 degrees outside. The 6.2 diesel suburban fired right up
with 1 glow, we have a inch of ice on the roads followed by 2 inches of
snow. Didnt even try to fire up the 300D as its front tires are about
worn out and didnt want to drive it on icy roads. Now if the burb was
only 4 wheel drive. Headed to tulsa, will be LOTS of fun.

Gerry,
If the clutch plate is stuck to the fly wheel try jacking the back end up
enough to get the tires off the ground. Start the engine with the car in gear
and step on the brakes. (I had to do this more than once with an old Chevy
truck.)

I wonder if the pressure plate is failing since there was a problem before the
vehicle was parked.

I've heard that about Saturns, but never verified this. For
whatever reason, even though our pre-mid-90's MB's do have
rear pumps they just don't care to be towed far/fast with
them. I wonder if that's just MB being paranoid, or whether
there is a wear mechanism that's not addressed adequately
by the (tiny) rear pump?

The button with the circle of arrows is the air recirculation button. The
headrests in the back are manually raised and lock into place, but the
button in front is to lower them only.

Also, which toggle on the console?

Owner's manual - ebay, junkyards.

My only issue is that it's really cold out and I don't want to do the
maintenance work on it right now. Just because it's that cold.

[MBZ] couple 124 questions

2006-02-18 Thread Sunil Hari
My 1992 300D needs some maintenance work. A few questions, if you don't
mind.

1) When checking ATF level, the maintenance manual says to shift to P, run
engine for 1 to 2 minutes, and check the fluid level. While checking,
should the engine be running? I ask because there's another line that says,
"With the transmission at operating temperature, the oil level should be at
the max mark."

2) Power steering fluid - to replace it, I know you suck out what you can
out of the reservoir. How do you get the rest out? I tried to check
skinnerbox, but the site is down.

Thanks.

Larry - you need to be more specific on the "toggle on the console". I'm
sure we can tell you what each switch does, if we know which one you are
wondering about.
As for the rear headrests, they pull up manually, and the console switch
drops them for improved rear visibility. And where is this "button with a

I have the original owner's manual for my 1990 2.5, and can scan in/copy any

Subject: [MBZ] Got my New 300D !!! ;-)

Oh MAN! How am I ever going to be able to drive my 240D again after that
300D?? It's SO FREAKIN QUIET!! I'm in LOVE!! ;-) Smooth, starts
instantly, everything works! I even figured out the little button next to
the seat adjusting levers that raise & lower the front seat headrest! So
col.. It's everything ya'll said it was and MORE! Accelerates like
crazy! ;-) Yep, I'm thrilled with it!

Now, the only thing that I haven't figured out is the little toggle on the
console does? It's kinda loose so either it's broke or just loose.
So what's it supposed to do?

The climate control works perfectly - checked AC when we 1st test drove it
and the heater today - it was 70F yesterday and in the 30's today with
snow!

Crazy weather. Even the little temp in the dash works. Oil pressure is
normal - pegs as soon as the accel pedal is pressed and the coolant temp
stays a 1/4" or so below the 80C mark. Just like my 240D. Door locks
work,
antenna works, all lights works, etc. etc. ya'll don;t want to hear all
the

details..

Another question - The rear seat head rests - there's a button to lower
them

on the dash (I think) - but how are they raised? Also, there's a button
with a circle and arrows on it - ??

The books I got are the Service Booklet, Radio Controls & Operation,
Service

Locations and some other single page things. But I need a Owners Manual -
what's the best source? Sure,, I can do a search and I'm sure Performance
sells them - but I'd like to get the best price. What about junk yards?
Do

they sell them?

Thanks for answering all my questions about this (and the other) cars -
it's

great to have such a huge source of intelligent information!!

Re: [MBZ] couple 124 questions

2006-02-18 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Sunil - the engine should be running, in park, and the transmission
thoroughly warmed up when checking the fluid level.
As for the PS fluid, some people take the extra trouble to try and get all
the old oil out, but you don't do that when changing the engine oil (its
nigh impossible to drain the oil cooler), so just sucking out the reservoir
and replacing the filter and fluid there should suffice, especially if its
done on a regular basis (30k miles). You could disconnect the retune line
and let the engine idle for the few seconds needed to pump out the old oil,
but that risks 1) running the system dry, and 2) making a mess and possible
future leaks by disturbing the hose/clamp connection.

My 1992 300D needs some maintenance work. A few questions, if you don't
mind.

1) When checking ATF level, the maintenance manual says to shift to P,
run

engine for 1 to 2 minutes, and check the fluid level. While checking,
should the engine be running? I ask because there's another line that
says,
"With the transmission at operating temperature, the oil level should be
at

the max mark."

2) Power steering fluid - to replace it, I know you suck out what you can
out of the reservoir. How do you get the rest out? I tried to check
skinnerbox, but the site is down.

Thanks.

Don't ya just hate intermittent problems.

Okay, so this isn't a prechamber carboning issue, or a bad rings
issue, or

is it all part of the picture?

I can't say that it isn't. Just picture a goopy diesel intake. How
does all that get in there?

Cause the question is, what's the oil doing up in the injector, to
begin
with? It was oil, not diesel, trust me there was a LOT and it stank
big time

when it ran down the block.

I thought I was leaking oil when that seal let go. what I was seeing
was dirty fuel, I figured it was expelling some carbon in solution.

How was oil consumption prior to this event?

I was planning the pull the injectors after the winter, anyway, and
getting

them rebuilt.

Try to find a rebuild-able set of newer ones if possible. I haven't
seen all that many blow that seal out but it obviously happens. Could
be that the 2 halves weren't torqued properly on assembly or maybe they
vibrate loose.

No, but I love it! That engine work is way out of my league, but I know

South Lindbergh? OMG I remember doing that in high school a couple times!
Don't think we got the full benefit of it though, just seemed like a big
traffic jam in a parking lot to me, did witness a goober 5 mph wreck there
once though. I live sooo close to there, cut through all the time. I don't
think they do that anymore, especially since they took the theater out.

But you're right. Hell, I'd love to blow some minds at a national MBCA

staion wagon would be so very, very wrong!

If you see the latest MB Classic mag, there's a photo of an Italian at MB

simply by driving with his huge Italian cahonies. I saw some pretty gutsy
driving when I was in Rome.

If you've run that now a few times (and rev'd it up to boot) with no oil

anything flailing around inside the engine if the lubrication has failed.
Of course, it could be a failure of the sensor/indicator for oil pressure,
but most of the time, no one can be that lucky!

Thanks again for your help. ;-) I plan to check the car today - and will
probably buy the following from Rusty if needed: Wiper insert, oil filters,
fuel filter, air filter, spare fuses, rear view mirror (mine has a loose
attaching point), right hand mirror adjusting control, and whatever I think
of.

Just checked the air filter and it looks *new* ! ;-)

Will change the oil and go ahead and make the change to Mobil 1.

Thanks again for your help - if you don't get around to scanning the book
don;t be concerned - I'll find a Owners Manual soon.

Thanks again -- can't wait to drive it some more!

Larry - you need to be more specific on the "toggle on the console". I'm
sure we can tell you what each switch does, if we know which one you are
wondering about.
As for the rear headrests, they pull up manually, and the console switch
drops them for improved rear visibility. And where is this "button with a
circle and arrows"?
I have the original owner's manual for my 1990 2.5, and can scan in/copy
any

pages you might need.

Oh MAN! How am I ever going to be able to drive my 240D again after that
300D?? It's SO FREAKIN QUIET!! I'm in LOVE!! ;-) Smooth, starts
instantly, everything works! I even figured out the little button next
to

the seat adjusting levers that raise & lower the front seat headrest! So
col.. It's everything ya'll said it was and MORE! Accelerates like
crazy! ;-) Yep, I'm thrilled with it!

Now, the only thing that I haven't figured out is the little toggle on
the

console does? It's kinda loose so either it's broke or just loose.
So what's it supposed to do?

The climate control works perfectly - checked AC when we 1st test drove
it

and the heater today - it was 70F yesterday and in the 30's today with

But I need a Owners
Manual -
what's the best source? Sure,, I can do a search and I'm sure
Performance

sells them - but I'd like to get the best price. What about junk yards?
Do
they sell them?

Thanks for answering all my questions about this (and the other) cars -
it's
great to have such a huge source of intelligent information!!

Just started it again today and paid attention to the oil pressure.
Let

it run for about 10-15 seconds, and the oil pressure never moved off of
zero. Ran the RPM's up to about 2k, and nothing. Could this be the
reason 10 years ago they thought there was a hole in the block, no oil
pressure? Could that be causing the knocking we hear?

Better hope the gauge is lying. Maybe time to open the oil filter
canister and remove the filter, then start it for a few seconds to
see if oil is pouring in. You absolutely need to find a way to
prove whether or not there is oiling going on. Running it to
destruction is widely considered the worst way.

Loosely, my boy, loosely! Or perhaps the screwed cans of

And if oil isn't pouring in, how hard is it to replace an oil pump?

I am away working on the 300TE I bought.

On the 88 300 TE i just got, there is no fluid in the suspension reservoir.
THe rear struts have the boots pushed up. There is evidence that the hydraulic
suspension has not worked for some time. Please send replies directly to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] since I am away from home and it is easier to use on the road
than my regular email account.

  1. Any advice where to start? I have no febi fluid and can't get any for at
least 2 days. Did anyone ever locate anything else that would be compatible
enough for leak testing? I plan to order the febi, but I'd lke to figure out
what needs fixing ASAP because I have 2 more days here that I can work on it.

  2. I am assuming that the Dual pump is toasted on the suspension side.
Someone rebuilt the dual pump. I think it was Hans N. Can anyone tell me
about rebuilding the pump. Did you get the parts form Rusty? This car has a
distributor at the front of the cam, not a suspension hydraulic pump.

  3. Is there any way to test the rear struts without fluid or the pump
working? I am guessing not, but anything I can do now to determine what I need
to order will be helpful. I am guessing the struts are blown, or at least
while everything is empty it would be a good time to rebuild them. Has anyone
done this? are there any special tools needed?

Thank you all for any collective wisdom you can impart.

A little history: This is the Warrenton , VA car. WHen it got here it would
not start. (Starter turned, but won't engage.) Supposedly it has a bad trans
but everything else was ok. I took the starter out and found the bendix
rusted tight. I took it apart and polished the shaft and put it back together
with neversieze. I got the car running ant the engine seems ok . It appears
to have been sitting for at least 6 months. THe PO has 10 different recent
addresses. It looks like this wagon has been used for hauling. I wonder if it
was used on a paper route. It is a pretty decent car, except that it won't
start, and the hydraulic suspension is a mess and supposedly the trans is bad.
So far the trans seems to shift ok. It looks like the biggest problems are
with the suspension.

On my test run the engine died. It has no spark, so now I am trying to track
that down. Coil has 0.2 to 0.3 ohm across the primary terminals and about 88K
ohms from either primary to the secondary.

The rollback driver didn't tie it down cause we were only going about 1/4
mile and it slid forward and cracked the grill. Bummer! It

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo

I just changed it - it's a royal PITA. I ended up taking off the top
radiator hose, loosening the hard plastic vacuum line running from the brake
booster and moving it, and it was STILL a bitch to get the old filter out.
Diesel spilled everywhere, it was a wreck.

Did I mention that it's 13 F outside? I actually cried when the blood
returned to my hands.

Are there any listers out there near Columbus who would let me use their
garage for mild work? I'm talking oil change here and maybe rear diff. I'm
dying here.

dying here.
