Gary Zerox G-05 is a light yellow almost clearish color I guess. Around
$11.00 a gallon at Pep boys or the MB blue which is about twice as much.
You will need almost two gallons for a 50/50 mix with the 77 300D. +/- GET

So now that I've installed the new, new radiator (one that does not leak,
thank you Gary/Rusty), I need to top it off with coolant and I'm out of MB
collant. Which one do I buy at the McParts which goes with MB coolant?

Garyradiator incoming. Rusty...didn't get top radiator hose with new

Re: [MBZ] 16 cylinders?

2006-12-22 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Larry et al: You have to keep the question to cars, and AFAIK, 16 cylinders
has been the practical limit. Besides complexity and weight, there are too
many parts to break, too many pieces to keep together with the correct
clearances, and too much "windige" or frictional losses. A big factor in
the increased weight comes from making the thing stiff enough not to
self-destruct.

You are correct - a V8 is about the best compromise for
parts/power/smoothness. A V6 comes close, but needs a balance shaft to be
as smooth. Now an in-line 6 is very smooth, but that comes at the cost of
longer and heavier. For simplicity and reliability, its hard to beat a
4-banger, but then smoothness goes out the window.

But when you go beyond automobiles, then all bets are off - ALCO (American
Locomotive) makes a dandy V18 that is used on a lot of RR engines, and the
Coast Guard put 2 of them in their "Famous Class" WMEC270 Cutters. Seemed
to be reliable and smooth. About 1500 HP each

Andrew asked:<< is there any engineering limit on the no. of cylinders>>
I'm just guessing here -- based on things I've read - but I think the
limit
may have to do with the crankshaft flexing - the flat 12 Porsche used in
the

917s of the early 70s had a seperate shaft that transmitted power from the
center of the crank - so the power was coming from the center and not the
end of the crank so the crank did not distort.

I need to read about the design of the 917 engine some more but that's
what
I recall --

I don't recall any engines with more than 16 cylinders -

I'm a "hurler" as the recovery nurse called me as I was coming to after

Stopped several times on the way home to blow. When I had a hernia

Dr. put some wicked dramimine type patch on me before they knocked me

There are practical limits -- epitomized by the 32 cylinder 4-row
radial P&W 4360, the Wright 18 cylinder with three shaft coupled
turbine Turbocompound on the Super Connie, and the Napier Nomad
tubo-compounded diesel -- 12 cylinder horizontally opposed diesel with
8 atmospheres (110 psi) boost from a coupled axial turbocharger.

Turboprop engines and jets replaced these monsters pretty fast in the
50s -- way too hard to maintain and too expensive to operate (Pan Am
never did find props that held up to the 4360, crashed at least two
Boeing 377s due to prop failures, for instance).

Rolls Royce bought Napier, and turned the turbocharger off the Nomad
into the Rolls Avon/Conway jet engine, discarding the diesel (which
should give you a hint of what the Nomad looked like!)

There isn't any real reason except perhaps marketing to make anything
with more than 8 cylinders. V8's are easy to machine, quite reliable,
reasonably smooth (12s are much better in the smoothness department,
but see following), and easy to cool and fit into an engine
compartment. I cannot imagine what anyone would do with more than 250
hp anyway -- none of the driving I do would make it worth the excess
fuel consumption for better acceleration!

V12 and V16 engine usually have small cylinders (otherwise the engine
become enormous) and the close spacing, lack of space in the engine
compartment, and some notable failures to appreciate the cooling
requirements have produced several recent V12 engines that produce LESS
hp that the equivalent displacement V8 or L6 by the same manufacturer
(Benz and Jaguar, specifically). The extra hp from the 12 is so small
compared to the weight that there is little improvement in performance,
and they are both front heavy. The Jag in particular has a nasty habit
of running so hot that the fuel system develops leaks, causing a total
loss fire more often than not.

A late 80's 560 SEC will spank a late 80's Jag V12 with no trouble at
all. The cigarette lighter doesn't shoot into the rear seat and burn
holes in the upholstery, either.

Re: [MBZ] 16 cylinders?

2006-12-22 Thread LarryT

Andrew asked:<< is there any engineering limit on the no. of cylinders>>
I'm just guessing here -- based on things I've read - but I think the limit
may have to do with the crankshaft flexing - the flat 12 Porsche used in the
917s of the early 70s had a seperate shaft that transmitted power from the
center of the crank - so the power was coming from the center and not the
end of the crank so the crank did not distort.

I need to read about the design of the 917 engine some more but that's what
I recall --

I don't recall any engines with more than 16 cylinders -

Bob, hope your procedures go well.

The topic of wisdom teeth is of high interest to me, as I still have my
two
lower ones at age 36. I had the top two pulled because they each had a
cavity. Am weighing the risks against the benefits of having the lower
ones
pulled (you probably know that the lower ones are more risky).

I ask my dentist and oral surgeon if these two lower wisdom teeth will
give
me trouble of any sort between now and my funeral. It's quite hard to
get
any concrete answer (I'm just looking for their opinion, but I've run
into a
lot of hesitancy to give opinions on the part of healthcare
professionals).

Re: [MBZ] 16 cylinders?

2006-12-22 Thread mykd1
I'm sure there is a limit, you have to keep in mind the more cylinders there
are the more complex the engine becomes. For all practical purposes I would say
a V8 or even a V10 is more than enough to get the job done

Re: [MBZ] 190D pics

2006-12-22 Thread andrew strasfogel

Speaking of spines, has anyone had a microlumbar discectomy? It involves
removing a crescent-shaped piece of vertebra to get at and remove whatever
(usually a piece of disc) is impinging on a spinal column nerve. Supposedly
you're in and out in a matter of hours. I may be a candidate for this
delightful sounding procedure to alleviate pain in my leg from just such an
impingement...

I'm a "hurler" as the recovery nurse called me as I was coming to after
having my shoulder repaired. I was yacking every where.
Stopped several times on the way home to blow. When I had a hernia
repaired,
Dr. put some wicked dramimine type patch on me before they knocked me
out
and I yacked not upon coming to. I had to wear the patch for four days.
Hopefully they can patch me when they hack out my choppers...

I forgot about the older stuff. I was thinking of the Cizetta in
particular:
http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2887200950074456788cssOBd
It was interesting. Looked a lot like a Lambo, but had like 12 headlights
or some such odd thing. Like 6 of them were pop-up units.

The V12 that I am refering too is in the 2006 S600 and its a 5.5 litre (336
cid) makes 510 HP and 610 ft lbs of torque. Now here's the interesting stuff.
It accelerates 0-60 in 4.2 sec's and runs the quarter in 12.6 at 115 mph. At
2.5 tons its quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera S, Chevy Corvette Convertible
and a Ferrari 612.

Depends on the size of the V12. If you're merely talking cylinders then I
know there's a V-16. I kinda think there's a V-18 or maybe a W-18 out there
as well. And then if you're not limited to cars there's more yet! (:

The last door to be closed on a w210 must be shut firmly or it won't

A w126 didn't mind firm closing, although properly adjusted doors don't

Re: [MBZ] 190D pics

2006-12-22 Thread LarryT

Hi Peter,
Percocet is an amazing pain killer that helps a huge number of people
though - the trick to taking it without dramatic side effects is to start
slowly. Being unable to focus is a pretty severe side effect - good thing
you were at home in bed when you took them - in hindsight, taking 2 may have
been too much - but at least they stopped the stone pain. I've had kidney
stones also - felt like I was dieing - I empathize and hope you don't have
episodes very often.

I have chronic pain unrelated to stones and started at 1 perc a day -
eventually ended at 4 of the 10/650 size a day - when the morphine pump was
implanted we gradually reduced it to 4 Perc of 10/325 strength - the 325
indicates the amount of acetomenphine in the pill which can be very bad for
the kidneys when taken long term - total time for me is up to ~10 years.
The morphine pump puts a continuous drip of morphine directly into my spine
but I had to have it refilled monthly - to get better pain relief they
changed it to Dilaudid which is more concentrated and the refills went to
every 3 or 4 months - a big relief considering they had trouble finding the
port and once made 7 attempts with the needle before finding it. No fun at
all.

The Dilaudid was a huge help in controlling pain and I have been able to
gradually reduce the Percocets to 2/day and my kidneys thank me. ;-)

Now, I only have 1 or 2 "Bad" days/week where before it was 3-5 bad days a
week.

They had me on Oxycontin for a while - but the criminal element makes that
dangerous - some thugs were following people home and breaking in to steal
it - Hillbilly Heroin it was called. But it was a great pain killer - most
effective when it was built up over time.

I hope the Kidney Stones are a rare event for you - it's amazing how much
pain something so small can cause -

I had a similar experience with Percocets a couple years back. I had a
kidney stone (avoid these, they are not worth the trouble!) and the
doctor gave me some for pain. The dispenser at the drug store asked
me if I took painkillers or narcotics of any kind, and I of course said
no, why do you ask? He replied that I probably need to be in bed when
I took the Percocets, then.

I had an "episode" at 5 am, finally gave in a took two at 5:30.
Within a minute I was comatose, woke up at 9:30 but couldn't focus both
eyes at the same time in the same place, and finally managed to get to
the phone at 10:00 and call in.

For the life of me I cannot understand why someone would call abusing
these things "recreational". "Suicidal the slow way" is more like it,
who wants to be incapacitated?

I believe Cadillac did too (sp?). Big, fuel hungry, weighed WAY too
much, as they were simply two straight 8's on an expanded common
crankshaft -- twin ignition systems, twin carb systems, the whole

then.

Overheated all the time, almost impossible to get the timing right, and

I forgot about the older stuff. I was thinking of the Cizetta in

Depends on the size of the V12. If you're merely talking cylinders then I
know there's a V-16. I kinda think there's a V-18 or maybe a W-18 out
there
as well. And then if you're not limited to cars there's more yet! (:

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel Cold Weather Data Point

2006-12-22 Thread Curt Raymond

Ernest,

I like your conclusions. I had similar symptoms when I first got my 190D this
time last year.
It'd start and run but had no get up and go until the engine had warmed the
fuel for awhile.
I bought the car in New Jersey in mid-December, it had been sitting for a few
weeks. I think it had a tank of summer fuel in it.
Its nice that the newer cars have the fuel-warming provision, otherwise, add
anti-gell and hope.
Once I'd run about 1/4 tank of good winter fuel through it (oh and a couple
cans of purge) it was fine.

It did take a long time to kick in though. I remember sitting in agony for

When I was 36 (a decade ago), I was wondering the exact same thing since
none of my wisdom teeth were giving me any trouble. My dentist told me
waiting/doing nothing was a crap shoot. He suggested pulling them at that
time to prevent the misery I'm going through now.
If you are diligent about going to the dentist for your routine stuff he/she
should be able to see if something is starting to go south and you can deal
with it then. Then hopefully you won't have to get thre wisdom teeth cut out
one impacted wisdom tooth hacked out, two root canals done, and a random
extraction. Starting the day after Christmas it's a dental care marathon for
me.

BTW...found out I'm one of the people who can't handle vicodin. Not pretty.

It's quite hard to get
any concrete answer (I'm just looking for their opinion, but I've run into
a
lot of hesitancy to give opinions on the part of healthcare
professionals).

Re: [MBZ] considering brake repair....

2006-12-22 Thread LarryT

Hi Allen,
As Loren suggested, it's pretty simple. Even rebuilding the calipers is not
very difficult. Get the correct size Flare Wrench - I believe it's 11mm -
Sears has a pack of 2 with the 4 most common sizes - they'll prevent damage
to the flare nuts. You must not split the caliper halves - the pistons will
come out without splitting the calipers - remove the old o-rings and dust
boots, clean everything using brake fluid or brake cleaner - avoid breathing
the dust. Inspect the pistons and bores - if they have gotten moisture in
them there may be corrosion making the pistons difficult to move - which
typically causes seizing. Minor corrosion can be cleaned up with fine emory
cloth - I use a fine wire brush in a bench grinder - the important thing it
to not remove any base metal or the pistons will be ruined - same for the
bores. Too much aggressive cleaning and the calipers will need to be
replaced. Installation is (as Haynes like to say) the reverse of
disassembly. The only one likely to be difficult it the one already seized.
Proceed carefully and you shouldn;t have any problems. Feel free to write
me directly if you wish.

Since all 4 need attention, put jack stands under each corner and work on
one corner at a time. once all 4 are done, refill the system with a quality
brake fluid -- and bleed the brakes. I like the blue ATE fluid but that a
personal preference and any DOT4 will work but alternating between the blue
and regular makes the yearly flushing easier - when the color changes you
know fresh fluid is at the caliper.

BTW, I'd replace all 4 rotors rather than machining the rears and replacing
the fronts. New rotors are not that much and some shops have old equipment
that does not do the machining perfectly causing vibrations that never stop.
true, it's unlikely, but the price of new rotors is pretty good - as low as
$17 each for rear rotors.

Anyway - after completing one caliper rebuild you'll have plenty of
confidence and the remaining 3 will go pretty quickly. BYW, new bleed
valves, pad pins and anti-rattle springs can be ordered from Rusty if yours
are questionable - sometimes the bleed valves get screwed up when
"mechanics" use vise grips to loosen them ---

Also, there are some "automatic/self bleeding" bleed valves which fit the
MB - haven;t tried them yet but the concept is sound. It makes one man
bleeding easy - unless you have a pressure bleeder which means your bleeding
will go quickly anyway -

Good luck - That $1000 will look good in your checkbook!!

Corrected now...

Long time since I posted -- been busy, occasionally glancing at the

Anyway, I just got a quote from my mechanic for about $1,400 for
complete brake replacement on my '83 300D. He says 3 of 4 calipers
are leaking and the 4th is about to sieze.

Quote would include:
  4 rebuilt calipers
  new pads
  new sensors
  new front rotors
  resurface rear rotors
  labor...

I can get all the parts from Rusty for probably $400 or so. I don't
want to begrudge the guy his livelihood, he is a good mechanic and I
know that shops use the parts markup to help cover overhead.

HOWEVER -- not sure I want to put $1,400 into this car, though it
has not even 170,000 miles on it and I have no real complaints
otherwise.

Thoughts? Anything tricky about the job? I've done pads and
calipers on other vehicles before. If I spend a Saturday doing this
myself, anything else I should do while I'm in there? Hoses,
probably?

Assuming they came in properly, it seems reasonable to treat them like
any other teeth -- leave them unless they become a problem. Is there
any reason why pulling them now would be better than doing it later?

I still have my two right ones. My lower left one started to decay, and
the upper left was pulled as well because it was then nonfunctional. I
dreaded having it done but it was actually a piece of cake, mostly
because I was sedated. I don't remember anything from the time they put
the IV in until I was getting out my credit card to pay for the
procedure...and frankly I'm missing chunks of the rest of the afternoon,
too. It was almost worth it just for the drugs. ;)

Bob, hope your procedures go well.

The topic of wisdom teeth is of high interest to me, as I still have my two
lower ones at age 36. I had the top two pulled because they each had a
cavity. Am weighing the risks against the benefits of having the lower ones
pulled (you probably know that the lower ones are more risky).

I ask my dentist and oral surgeon if these two lower wisdom teeth will give
me trouble of any sort between now and my funeral. It's quite hard to get
any concrete answer (I'm just looking for their opinion, but I've run into a
lot of hesitancy to give opinions on the part of healthcare professionals).

I have a question about these non center tapped generators.
How do the 110-120v outlets work on these, or do they even
have 120v outlets?

They wouldn't/couldn't. But the lack of a center tap could
be because it's broken, not because it shouldn't have one.
Best to check! And of course your self-made cable-of-death
could be wrong, and fry your house goodies.

I think it's because everyone, at one time or another, has had an old

Yeah, although in that case no current would flow. With no center tap,
everything on one side of the outlet is simply in series with everything
on the other side. In series loads, the current is the same but the
voltage varies. So if you put two 100W bulbs in, one on each side,
they'd split the voltage 50/50 and each would get 120V. But if you put
in one 100W bulb and one 60W bulb, the 100W bulb will see 90V and the
60W bulb will see 150V. The greater the imbalance gets, the higher the
voltage difference will become. And in a household this would vary as
stuff was turned on and off, making matters worse.
