The strange thing is that that was the last customs check we did, went
through half a dozen checks before that.
Also nowhere did I read that things like inflated footballs are a customs no

I guess now that communism is wearing an expensive business suit and driving
a big Benz they have to find something else to scare the masses with,
otherwise the people might wake up and figure out who the true enemy is.

Re: [MBZ] Timing problem 87 300D Turbo

2007-06-14 Thread Peter Frederick
First thing is to check the cam timing -- when the marks on the cam are
lined up, where is the degree wheel on the crankshaft? Make sure you
sight over the marks, they are a bit more difficult on the 603 than on
the 617. Should be a notch in the thurst washer and a mark on the
front cam tower, I don't remember at the moment, will check my book
later.

Injection timing is more difficult -- you must have the lock tool that
screws into the side of the IP at the rear after you take the plug out
OR a drip tube of some sort on #1 position on the IP. Not the same
timing, either -- if you use the lock tool, the tool should engage the
locking tab at 15 degrees ATDC at the crank. Using the drip tube, fuel
should stop running out at 26 degrees BTDC as the plunger rises to
cover the intake slot in the sleeve inside the pump. If you used a
drip tube, you are probably right on for timing and there is something
else wrong.

Did you put different fuel than usual in the last tank? What color is
the smoke? Blue, gray, white, black? Does it idle properly if you
push down on the pedal instead of letting the idle control system work?

Do you have fuel leaks, either at the injection lines (pump or
injectors), or in the fuel lines? The tiny injector lines on these
engines crack fairly easily, and it will idle horribly, and the fuel
lines can leak air in on the suction side, causing all sorts of running
problems.

Re: [MBZ] Increasing air flow in Diesel

2007-06-14 Thread Peter Frederick
Modern US diesels are under-rated for pickup use (so the frame doesn't
bend up like a pretzel and the tranny lasts most of the warrenty), so
it's very easy to get LOTS more hp from them (double in some cases).
Just re-program the computer to deliver more fuel.

Reduces the already pitiful milage that much more, though.

K&N lives on -- won't do any more for you on a diesel than on a gasser.

2007-06-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
If timing was off by 40 degrees, you would have bent valves. You
probably checked it wrong. As for the rough idling/smoking, could be
timing off, could be dirty injectors, could be bad delivery valves. Run
a can of diesel purge thru it and see what happens. Also, when its
idling rough, is your abs light on and your tach not working?

Will give you a couple more miles per gallon. NO WAY it will give you

I flew up to New Hampshire a couple of years ago to go up to Maine and
pickup a car. I had 2 suitcases loaded down with tools and spares checked in
I even put a note on the outside and spoke to the inspector personally
to tell them what was in there ( I figured a few things like multimeters
and some odd tools would send them running for the exits if it showed up
on the x ray) When I got to the other end, the things had all kinds of
inspection tags inside signed by everyone in the place, with HEAVY
warning stickers all over them.

That didn't bother me any, it was having to pull my shoes off and put
them along with my walking stick on the xray belt and try to hobble
through the metal detector without them, then attempt to put the shoes
back on with nowhere to sit down while they barked at me to hurry up
that irked me to no end. I don't bend that way anymore. You've got to
wonder who comes up with this stuff.

I have been flying all over the place about once a week for the last
8-10 weeks. Everytime I fly I get one of those cards that says that they
searched my bags. I also had 5 trips in a row where they lost my
luggage on the return trip. I got to know the luggage customer service
counter people by name. The bags have always showed up the next day. 4
of the trips were on America West and 1 was on United.

Diesels already run with an oversupply of air, its unlikely that these

get the IP back in the same phase it came out in.) Better safe than
sorry! I removed the chain tensioner and all five bolts holding in
the injection pump. (Three on the flange, the hub bolt, and one on
the rear support bracket.) I pulled off the fuel lines and vacuum
hoses, then managed to yank the thing out of there. It's a tight fit!

With it out the big O-ring flange seal was exposed. It was flattened,
though still somewhat flexible and not cracked. Not a smoking gun,
but it could well be responsible: the area under the flange was very
oily. Of note is that the O-ring seal looks nothing like the (much
smaller) seal I'd ordered from Rusty. I think he sent me the internal
shaft seal rather than the big flange seal. One can result in oil
leaks to the outside world, the other cannot. I will have to get the
right one.

There is a timing adjustment screw on the back of the timing vault
that mates with the IP's flange. That would be handy when making fine
adjustments.

I went to the parts car and found that it does have the throttle
damper on it. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a sluggish
oil-filled thing, or more of an air-filled damper. I'll have to find
out, this one is definitely not full of oil. It was not clear where
the other end of the damper hooked on the parts car, there was nothing
obvious left in place. That could be fun. Does anybody know the
answers to these two questions?

While I was down there I noted that the heat exchanger at the heater
tap is sealed with a fat O-ring, and held in place with a spring clip.
(The parts car's was undone.) I also grabbed an alternator from out
of the back of the '87 TD, we'll see if it's the right one and if it
works. I also checked that the parts car's AC compressor is not
seized, so we'll be taking that at some point.

The IP for the manual transmission car also has a vacuum control valve
on the side of it, probably just for the EGR. I'll probably be
removing all this stuff anyway, it'll help reassembly and will
cut clutter in the car. (The EGR is already gone.)

I'm going to call a few Bosch diesel service places in town to see
what they'll charge to do a re-seal job on the pump. If it's
reasonable I may have that done. (There are a number of places it can
leak oil to the outside, and the delivery valve seals should probably
be refreshed while they're there.) I don't intend to have a full
calibration done as I know that's a not insignificant expense.

Of a truth, you committed to offer 40 microKaleb if the need arose, but
since it rose not, you offered a mere 20, as even the bidding history at
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=160124987971 shows.

But of much greater import is the shipping, which at 29.76 milliKaleb is
well nigh 1500 times greater than the paltry sum of purchase.

Talking about customs, we went over to Vietnam for a couple of weeks and on
the way back we stopped over in HK. Anywho I had my son's toy bag with me as
i went through the scanner and was pulled over. In Vietnam I got a homemade
army tank, which is made out of old baby food tins, sewing machine bobbins
for track rollers and a bit of bicycle chain as the track. The most amazing
part of it is that it actually works.
So here I am thinking "ohh yeah they wanna have a look at this tank because
of the electrics inside of it but no, they where interested in my son's
football and wanted me to deflate it. Guess they thought there might be a
gas inside of it.

[MBZ] evil vacuum lurks

2007-06-14 Thread John M McIntosh
Ok so my wife complains shifting is hard in the 90's wagon. Take it
for a spin, yes it is, thumping into gear.

Fine go out stick vacuum gauge on line after green pot feeding
transmission modulator. No Vacuum. Yup shifting would be hard, on the
other hand that is a good thing.

a) check transmission modulator, that is ok, holds vacuum nicely.
b) check green pot after vacuum controller, fine
c) check rubber connector hoses fine
d) check vacuum at feed before green restriction connector to vacuum
control valve, good

e) check vacuum at feed after green restriction connector. good
f) check vacuum at pipe exiting Mr transmission controller vacuum
regulator (123 300 10 33), NO vacuum.

Vacuum in, no vacuum out.. (or so I think).

Sigh
try to pull vacuum on input side with minvacuum, nope...

Ok well it's 15+ years old, lets get new one.

New one arrives, actually made march 28th 2007 (revised 140 300 08
33 I think).
Well I guess if this is new old stock these things must go faulty
enough to have used up all the old stock.

Stick on car, test for the 385 mbars I need, ZERO? Gawh repeat
steps (a)-(f) same, but with new controller...

Try old controller, same.

Wife at this point lets me know my dinner is being enjoyed by the
German Shepherd and if I actually wander out of the garage I might
be able to lick the plate or something.

Trying hard not to drop bolts into engine pan...
Grrr remove controller swing up to see if I can turn connector on
back, and VACUUM... Huh. Fine, put back in, put bolts on, go to
adjust, NO vacuum.

Huh...

Say things, go check on happy German Shepherd, no dinner for me, back
to garage. undo the nuts, swing it up, VACCUM...
oh look that less that 2 year old Y connector feeding direct
from vacuum pump, if I let the hoses all settle, mmm no vacuum to
controller, apply a bit of torque on the hoses, why then vacuum.

Oh so EVIL... Put spare 17 year old Y connector back in car, vacuum
vacuum. Hook up to old controler, vacuum. Clamp tongue, pet happy
german shepherd.

Put it all back together, take for spin, nice shifting...

Seems when the hoses were all relaxed, then no vacuum, but when I
moved them to test for vacuum on the connections to the vacuum
controller, then the crack would seal

just enough to show vacuum and mislead me.

Well maybe I'll ebay the old one then, I was thinking of taking it
apart to see what's inside, but it wasn't at fault and alas these
aren't $20 items.

Chaps do a great job keeping sand, stones and bugs off
your clothes. I wouldn't wear them on short trips or
around town, but if I was doing a road trip, I would.
Down here there is a lot of crap on the road, and at
some times during the year the bugs are so thick they
literally make your visor opaque after 30 - 40 miles
of driving.

And yes, Harley does sell a lifestyle, which is truly
the key to their success. How many Honda, Yamaha or
Suzuki owners have their bike's trademark tatooed on
their body?

I doubt that I would ever own a Harley. There are too
many other bikes out there I like better, are more
reliable, and far cheaper than a Harley. The reason
we rode Harleys was because they were free, as was
much of the Motor clothing we have.

I hope people continue to embrace the H-D lifestyle.
Their willingness to do so has provided us with the
means to have a very nice retirement, thanks to the
H-D stock we have acquired over the years.

[MBZ] '86 SDL spare

2007-06-14 Thread Luther
I'm getting ready for a LONG trip to Reno and back. My SDL didn't have a spare
and Kaleb wouldn't sell me one. I have a good stock of 123 rims
aroundwould one of these work in a pinch to get me to the next tire shop?
Obviously it's not going to drive like a good Benz, but it's better than no
spare at all. TIA all.

Re: [MBZ] Oops!

Gump can use a bit of petrol for the really cold days. Three gallons
in her tank is about as much as I would use to get the gel to flow.
On a hot summer day, I would be trying to dilute the stuff with #2.
Maybe you can suck some out into a five gallon jug and add that much
back. Or remove half and fill with normal fuel then use the removed
stuff in five gallon increments, one gallon?

Just like the headcase SDL you sold me. I'm starting work on it tomorrow.

that -should- be ok - I think the Benz limit on diesel-gasoline mix is
75-25. So 3/18 = 1/6 = 16% gasoline.

Just don't do it again, esp. given how much cheaper diesel is than gasoline
(and for God's sakes, premium?!)

Peter,
Others have done this w/no untoward results... Run it and
periodically fill it back up w/another 5 gallons of diesel, each time
will diminish the gas content..

We all get 'brain 'F..TS' now and then...

IMHO, no harm, no foul..

Take care,

Pearl Black and Smoke Silver were the two colors, at least in USA.
(I've never seen a euro that wasn't black, so maybe they have
no more choice than us)
I hope the trunk is unlatched.
His 185hp claim would be for the euro model. All the euro's I
see in the Finn videos, etc have cloth checkerboard seating
surfaces, this one is all leather so I assume it's MBUSA.
It does not have seat heaters, which were about the only
option on the car, aside from the auto tranny.

Lately, after slowing down and braking normally, the tranny will not get
into the start out gear unless you give it a little fuel and then it gently
klunks into gear and off we go. Everything else is fine. M1 ATF level is SAT.
Looks good, smells good.

What's the deal?

Bob,

The cause is the kick down solenoid plunger which hangs up in really hot
weather, especially after a hard run. I think it expands just enough to grab
a
little in the heat here in Phoenix. I wouldn't worry about it, though it is
kind of disturbing to feel the drive train go down to first gear after
starting out a few feet in second.

the kick down solenoid is found on the driver's side front of the
transmission and can be removed after lifting the two wires by pulling the
center hold
down bolt. I have never tried it, but some judicious polishing of the piston
with crocus cloth might free it up. If you hadn't said that you had
synthetic in there, I would recommend that first. I know you pile the miles
on with
those long commutes so if you have over 30,000 on this oil, I would consider
changing it.

More likely than an oil company conspiracy is a CYA approach by the
auto makers. By excluding warranty claims where biodiesel is used it
gives them a safe position without having to invest in research to
determine what percentages / formulations of biodiesel are actually
harmful or not.

Once there is a real standard formulation for biodiesel that is widely
available, it will be worth it to officially certify its
acceptability. Too much still in flux at the present time.
