Re: [MBZ] Thermostat Change 190D and Search Engine in Archives

2007-11-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
1. Thanks, Kaleb. I was able to search via the page you sent me a link
to. Don't know how I could have found the page otherwise, but thanks.

2. Thanks, John, for the digital camera idea. Hadn't thought of that.
I suppose it is to auto repair what GPS is to exploration. Hope
surgeons don't start doing this.

3. This is not, at all, a rip on Rusty or anyone esle: But I am not
willing to assume that the person selling me parts is all-knowing - as
you two have suggested I do.

I have been told repeatedly that my 190D should run at 80C, and I saw
that Rusty's site only offered an 85C thermostat. That is why I simply
asked if running an 85C thermostat is better or not. Since then I have
seen a post in the archives by Marshall that suggested that the car
ought to run at 85. So I need to decide what advice to heed.

Thanks, Wilton.

Sorry 'bout that. I just wondered if the pics made it through, and I
was anticipating more kudos for my improv repair, after all the
discussion I had with the list about welding it. Hey, I gotta get
creds. where I can, as I am like a girl when a car hood gets lifted.
(well, not quite that bad)

Thanks again.

Man, I love riding that bike since the repair - sets things right
after all the welding shops and bike shops that turned me away. I
always maintained that is was a good bike.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap Rodbender

2007-11-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Maybe, but then maybe the key did get sucked into the oil pump after
wearing through the screen.

Another list member mentioned that it's not like a defect from the
factory & he's probably right. More than likely, someone had the head
off at some time & dropped the cam key into the engine. Then instead of
doing the right thing & pulling the pan, he just figured that the oil
pump screen would stop any damage.

Many years ago, I was working on a friend's 1971 220D. We were advancing
the engine so that we could check timing chain stretch & I immediately
noticed that the master link keeper was missing from the timing chain.
The master link was being held in place by grooves worn in the posts.

I told him that we had to pull the lower pan and he responded with "why,
won't the screen block the part"? We pulled the pan & found the keeper
inbedded in the screen & it was well worn into the pickup screen. I
don't know how many miles it would have taken to wear through but given
time, the keeper (or what was left of it) would have been sucked into
the oil pump.

Re: [MBZ] google can't find this address

2007-11-16 Thread Gary Hurst
i like to see who i'm dealing with, actually.

for example, say you place a large overnight order from bimby parts. if i
don't know you, i like to see what sort of place you have before i ship. if
i see a home that is owned by you, i feel a lot better than if i see a
mailboxes place.

you don't call, though, until you know the answers already.

i once had a guy place a large overnight order going to a trailer park.
when i emailed him about this, he explained that he needed it for his retail
auto parts store. now we know we are dealing with nonsense, but we finish
by asking him if it is being sent to the "store" and would like to know more
about the "store" to see if he might qualify for any further discounts. he
falls apart some more at this point and then goes away.

so it matters to me whether i'm going to a farm, a mansion, a hillbilly
shack. i don't like any sort of additional surprises when conducting any
sort of business.

As said patent issues for R-12 and -134a are urban legends stuff. By
the cynic wonders how someone might figure how to modify CO2 (or
combo with something else) to make THAT patentable and then the
lobbyists make sure that's the only permitted blend.

Also: With all the trouble with using circulating 120 bar CO2 as a
fluid why not just go and compress AIR, dump heat under expansion, and
use THAT? I can't pretend to know anything about the efficiency, and
moisture would likely be an issue. But it gets me thinking...

Europe has been using pure CO2 as a refrigerant in some applications for
a while now. The problem with pure CO2 is that liquid pressures can run
much higher, up to 1800 PSI in some cases.

Maybe someone has come up with a gas blend that runs at more reasonable
pressure levels?

ah. I didn't realize that the recommended tire is already a lower profile tire
than the one that goes on the 14" rims.

Yeah, please check your tires tonight and let me know the specs.

Nothing! :) If you use the MB recommended tire size for those rims,
everything should be the same diameter. I don't remember what the size
is, but I'll try to remember to go look on my car tonight. You can
always double check the tire size on that tire calculator to make sure
it will be the same.

You asked <<>> stranded

It wiped out the Buffalo which removed the indians source of food, shelter,
bldg matl and just about everything else. The Bffalo's would stand in
great herds and fall one by one from mostly long range shots - which the
45-70 excelled at.

Cowboys shooting at each other used mostly .44 and .45LC (Long Colt)
calibers with the 30-30 Winchester saddle gun thrown in for good measure.

Nothing! :) If you use the MB recommended tire size for those rims,
everything should be the same diameter. I don't remember what the size
is, but I'll try to remember to go look on my car tonight. You can
always double check the tire size on that tire calculator to make sure

The net effect overall is removal, but they do produce it depending
where it is in the daily cycle - they give off CO2 at night.

Re: [MBZ] New refrigerant

2007-11-16 Thread LarryT
Hmmm, since CO2 is so evil, I wonder how long before humans will be taxed
for breathing and expelling CO2? Think of all the money to be turned over
to the Govt. ;-)As everyone knows, the air we exhale is heavy in CO2 so
perhaps we will be forced to find another means of moving O2 into our lungs?
Course the taxation is preferable.

And while trees also contribute to CO2 levels, perhaps we should make them
do something different. Given the CO2 problems, I wonder why the UN is
pushing a Billion Tree program? Would seem to be counterproductive.

Re: [MBZ] New refrigerant

2007-11-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Tony,

Refrigeration systems take advantage of the tremendous amount of energy
needed to convert a liquid into gas & the tremendous amount of energy
released when converting that gas back into a liquid.

Air won't work because nitrogen, which is what air is mostly composed
of, will not compress into a liquid until you reach pressues way in
excess of reasonable.

Maybe when the CO2 system leaks out at 1800PSI it will help keep the
fire under control from your leaking high-pressure direct-injection

The deal about R-12 was that Dupont could no longer control the world

If you have ever seen a documentary concerning Eric Clapton there is usually a
reference to some graffiti on a wall stating "Clapton is God". In Mercedes
context concerning MB parts "Rusty is God" and concerning MB diesel repairs and
maintenance "Marshall is God". Buy whatever thermostat Rusty recommends, and
change the f'n thing. You gotta learn to trust the peoples intelligence on this
list.

Re: [MBZ] Thermostat Change 190D and Search Engine in Archives

2007-11-16 Thread Curt Raymond

Don't trust the bozos at Autozone et al unless they prove themselves. Rusty
proves himself day in and day out on this list.

Your car will run somewhere just north of 80c with an 85c thermostat. The rated
temp is at the point where the thermostat is fully open, its opening before
that...

I've got one in my car, temp needle runs just above 80c.

Yah, right.

Dupont never had an exclusive market for either of these products.

R12 was manufactured by several companies, not just DuPont.

R134 is being manufactured by several companies, not just DuPont.

I'm guessing the patent on 134 runs out about then.

The deal about R-12 was that Dupont could no longer control the world
supply, and therefore prices for R-12, so we had to figure out a way
to get rid of it. Dupont owns the 134 patent. Here we go again.

[MBZ] speedo gear in tranny

2007-11-16 Thread Christopher McCann
OK, so if I did put 15" wheels on my SD and used the "regular" tires for that
wheel, what do I have to do to adjust the speedo cable to make things
(speedometer, odo, trip) accurate? I am told that on MOPARs there is a little
plastic gear that you simply pop out, drop in the correct one and you're done.
Is this the case on our cars? If so, what is the gear I need? Could I take one
off any 126 that has 15" rims...like the 500SEL that's at the pick and pull?

Thanks,

Chris

Looks like the repair advice is not to think that much and just start
buying and wrenching.

Maybe my mistake with Rusty's site is I go to the parts catalog and
search for my part, then often get stumped when it lists more than one
part or requires some other knowledge I don't have.

So when most of you guys order parts from Rusty, do you simply call
him up and have him find the correct part for you, almost as if you

Re: [MBZ] jabba considers adding a second dog

2007-11-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Nah, your heart's in the right place.

I was just thinking of the unfortunate reality surrounding peoples'
freaking out if a dog dares nip anyone. It is harrowing to think that
one could be in bankruptcy, or debt for the rest of their life over a
bite. Heck, even put behind bars.

I have been extremely fortunate here. My late Dobie was freaked out
by, or just plain irritated by, children. This isn't uncommon for
males sometimes, and he certainly wasn't abused into being like this.

And yes, he nipped three different children. I do mean nip, not bite.
Fortunately two of these occasions were kids of people I knew, so they
accepted my very sincere apologies.

The third occasion was a little girl whose mom I did not know. I was
living in a run down apartment complex and after the incident, a lot
of the residents were banding together spouting words like "have him
put down". This little toddler had come walking straight up to my
Dobie on the street as her mom asked if her girl could pet him. I
didn't reply and before I had time to think what to do the toddler was
basically trying to hug him. He started to growl as I got my hand
between his beak and the little girl. I yanked the leash back and she
wound up with some bruising on her back from the nips.

No, dogs cannot be allowed to go around inflicting damage, I realize
that, and I'm not saying it was okay what happened.

Had to shake my head at the insanity recently when in a local hiking
area near where I live, there was a Barred Owl that had attacked
several people. But instead of doing anything to quell the danger to
people, the parks dept. simply warned people that they were in danger
and ought to stop hiking there 'til the owl was not angry anymore. A
dog bites someone, and he can be put to sleep, but perish the thought
of taking this stupid owl out with a well-placed shot.

Anyway, that's all I was talking about.

Our dogs certainly are integrated into our lives, I think. Sharing
beds, getting the best food we can afford, riding around in the back
seat of our cars, getting so much of our time in long walks and
training. When I had my Dakota pickup, by boy Magnum rode around in
the passenger seat. Was hard to see around him sometimes but I could
have him lay down when needed.

perhaps we will be forced to find another means of moving O2 into our lungs?
Course the taxation is preferable.

And while trees also contribute to CO2 levels, perhaps we should make them
do something different. Given the CO2 problems, I wonder why the UN is
pushing a Billion Tree program? Would seem to be counterproductive.

I'm usually one who doesn't like to ask other people to do what I can do
for myself (ie, at Autozone I only go to the counter to get something
from behind the counter), but with Rusty I call. I would say the
website is only about 65% of what Rusty has to offer I usually use
it to get a rough estimate of how much something would cost and thats
about it. If you don't want to take up a lot of time on the phone send
Tom (one of Rusty's employees) an email. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Depends on what I'm ordering. Some stuff isn't on the website, the driveshaft

Ah, and there is a song by Bruce Springstein in which he says "blind
faith in your leaders will get you killed." :)

I was wanting to lean on the intelligence of the list. That's why I
asked about any pitfalls, like the whole air getting trapped thing.
Looks like the repair advice is not to think that much and just start
buying and wrenching.

Maybe my mistake with Rusty's site is I go to the parts catalog and
search for my part, then often get stumped when it lists more than one
part or requires some other knowledge I don't have.

So when most of you guys order parts from Rusty, do you simply call
him up and have him find the correct part for you, almost as if you
were walking up to the counter at a parts house? I assumed the website
was there so he wouldn't have to be on the phone looking up parts all
the time. But I don't know, I was just assuming.

Chris,
this is what the stock W126 setup looks like:
Wheel size: 7Jx15 H2 offset (ET) is 25, tires 205/65/15

and will work great on your 300SD.

no, i know who you are.

lot's of people place large orders on stolen credit cards. the orders
generally make little sense and nearly always request overnight shipping.
the email addresses are almost always either yahoo or hotmail addresses. so
someone with a hotmail address orders 20 brake rotors shipped overnight and
you know it is a scam. so you try their "phone number" and discover that
you can't get anyone or it is inoperative.

Sad thing is that's about the mileage of the 05 dodge crew cab dually 4x4,
with a cummins, six speed manual, and 3.73s.

Granted the cummins has almost twice the torque of the 6.2.

The 6.2 was quite a fuel efficient engine for what it was.

i understand; with family ranging from VA and SC to TX and FL, i'm
familiar with how dogs are integrated into the society. (personally, our

in most any of our family homes for any of our functions. respectfully,
i know better than ever underestimate a Southern Mans bond with a dog.)
oddly enough, it's probably not the PWT you have to worry about; as

Good Dog!
very sad; dog was doing its job. too bad the idiot who wasn't
supposed to be in its yard had a badge and a gun!

makes me wonder though; after being around Belgian Malinois dogs
(similar in temperament and sharing a common base with the Belgian
Sheepdogs) for some time and knowing how good their aptitude for Good
Guy/Bad Guy is (one of the reasons you're seeing them more often now
replacing GSDs as Police and SAR dogs), i have to think there was
something even more wrong about that cop than appears on the surface in
this story. i know ours is a total sweetheart to most people, but around
the wrong person or someone in 'her' space, she's All Business.

cheers!

Sad thing is that's about the mileage of the 05 dodge crew cab dually 4x4,

Granted the cummins has almost twice the torque of the 6.2.

The 6.2 was quite a fuel efficient engine for what it was.

I don't consider myself "PWT" but I'm "awful fond of my dawgs." I quit
showing dogs years ago and now rather than look at papers and pedigree, I'm
more often influenced by "kill date" at the pound.. Last two dogs I simply
sat on the floor at the shelter and "bonded."

Just like I use intuition when I purchase a piano and to some extent a car,
if you're a "dog person" you'll be able to tell if it's right.

Litigious people? I was told years ago not to put a "beware of dog" sign up
for that suggests liability. The only place I have a warning sign "Beware of
Dog" is the property where I don't HAVE a dog.

Re: [MBZ] jabba considers adding a second dog

2007-11-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Malinois really are becoming more common, seems to me, than GSDs in
cop and military use. I think the only thing a GSD has over them in
police work is size which is largely for intimidation purposes. A
Malinois would pack plenty of punch, though I suppose a large
determined man, especially on drugs, could carry it along attached to
his arm and continue to fight or run.

I like to think that a Malinois is a German Shepherd with a Doberman
speed and craziness. They have this crazed look to their face and just
look nuts.

And your'e right the Belgian Sheepdog is a close cousin, so to speak,
as are the Belgian Tervuren and the Laekenois.

But I am pontificating now.

I tend to use email, but yes. I order from the web site when I know
exactly what I want (like oil filters, etc).

Incidentally, on the original topic of the thread, I think that the
cooling system on a Mercedes is a little more sophisticated than one
one on a (for example) Chevy, and therefore you should use THE
thermostat that is specified for your car and not play around with
hotter or cooler ones if you can even find them.

I would add that you should not expect a cheapo aftermarket and McParts
to work, either. I learned that with my Audi Fox in the 70's --
anything but a Behr or other German one didn't work, as they didn't
have the flap on the back to close off the bypass, or they had a huge
"bleed hole" drilled in them and I had no heat.

[MBZ] picked up the german shepherd dog tonight

2007-11-16 Thread Gary Hurst
only 3 fights so far tonight, so i'd say things are going well

it's pretty much what i expected. everything was great until the new dog
and the old dog were brought into the house and an attempt was made to feed
them. old dog didn't seem to like the idea that the new dog should also get
to eat. the new dog, though, was pretty hungry. that triggered some action
but they aren't fighting dogs as i was able to step between them like a
boxing referee and didn't even get scratched.

it is weird how being in the house changes so much. they got along fine in
the old owner's house, in the car coming home, at the burger king where we
got snacks for everyone, on my front lawn. but the second we got inside to
the food bowls, it all went to hell.

now abby (the kid) has them both in her bed. maybe it will last the night

Re: [MBZ] picked up the german shepherd dog tonight

2007-11-16 Thread Gary Hurst
it was all junk and the dogs each got small shares. no fighting. no
argument. everybody was happy.

so i felt safe to try it at home with the food bowls.

i figure i'll keep them separated for the night and try again in the morning

the shepherd is as mellow as can be and would be happy to let the older dog
be dominant, but the older dog seems insecure about the situation so she has
shown some aggression.

this isn't very bright as the shepherd would probably tear the old dog to
bits in a real fight, but it's hard to get the logic across to a canine.

it isn't bad at all though for a first evening together, especially given
what i've read on the internet about problems introducing new dogs into the
home. i'm sure old mexican cesar would have had this all sorted out in 10
minutes, but i ask to be given a few days on account of my lack of skills in
this area.

cats hiss at each other maniacally for like 3 to 5 days and then start
licking each other's butts. i presume it will be similar between dogs.

any advice is appreciated. i go to bed now.

Re: [MBZ] picked up the german shepherd dog tonight

2007-11-16 Thread Redghost
There is a pecking order Gary! Watching chickens figure out who is
going to be where on the pecking pole is not the same as dogs
though. A dog is part of the family, not the same with chickens who
have a flock mentality and the alpha human is the rooster, so no
quibbles.

Your original dog is not going to make an issue out of what goes on
outside of her sphere of power. Yard is probably fine, the car? She
could give a rat's rear about. The other guys house, is not her
domain, and she is lowest mutt on the line. But her house and eating
area is where she is queen and ain't no new other dog allowed to mess
with that reality. The new dog know that and accepts that he is the
intruder and must work up the ranks to beta dog. I would hope that
you are the alpha dog and all know it.

I am guessing that moving the new dog into your room will enforce
that the old dog is no longer alpha bitch and is now beta or lower in
your eyes. it also elevated the new dog without there being
agreement between them as to just where he fits. He would readily
accept that she is in charge, though old, and quickly take his place
in the pack.

The "fight" they have had is not blood and guts, it is her telling
him where he stands, he telling her what he thinks his position
should be and defending that. Negotiations. She knows darn well he
will rip her throat out is he wants, but he does not and she needed
to tell him that joint feedings in her house are not the norm and she
does not like the idea.

My $0.02 and worth half that on a good day with older pennies

2007-11-16 Thread Timothy Robinson
Agree with Clay with the addition:

Dogs are "pack" animals. Socialization and "learning the order" takes a
little time but is a natural thing. I always trained a dog by placing it in
a submissive position, letting him know I was "head of the pack" then
rewarding him to re-enforce proper behavior. The most effective discipline
was to exclude the dog from "the pack" (family being part of that pack).

Too many dogs wind up in shelters because they were never trained what
behavior is unacceptable.

Re: [MBZ] picked up the german shepherd dog tonight

2007-11-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Right, there is a pecking order. This is the most important tenet to
understand, and fortunately, most people have at least a basic
understanding of it.

Just to give you an idea of why I like talking about canine behavior:
I have competed in AKC obedience trials and have made it onto national
TV a few times doing tricks with my late Dobie Magnum. I tried to make
a go of full time dog training, but had trouble with the whole
marketing side of things. Making up flyers and business cards doesn't
help much - people need the kind of trust that comes from word of
mouth advertising. The reality of bills forced me back into the role
of working stiff.

I will try not to preach too much, but you are welcoming advice and I
want this new addition to go well for you and your family. I know you
don't care much to do a lot of training, and that's okay. Your family
just needs to train itself to follow a few rules. Here goes:

It is a problem when we try to create a particular pecking order that
the dogs don't agree with. I don't have enough info. to know what the
order is among your dogs, and likely you won't really know for some
weeks or months either. But you have to go with whatever order they
choose, not what seems right to us humans. They should work things out
and learn to live together, but there is no guarantee. Some pairings
just do not work well.

It sounds like both your dogs are female? Two females can have just as
big a dominance struggle as two males.

So, as I was saying, whichever dog boils to the top of the pack is
what it's going to be. Don't feel sorry for the lower dog and try to
right the order. You may want to feed the alpha dog first and the
other dog a bit later (but please feed them in separate locations,
preferably separated by a door). Try to make food as small an issue as
possible.

Confined spaces can trigger tension and fighting. Also, the alpha dog
will not be happy when the beta dog gets between her and you, and
won't like it when you give her attention. This could be a fight
trigger as well.

If you feel sorry for the under dog, don't try to set things right by
giving special priviledges to her. Don't take a toy from the alpha dog
and give it to the beta. Don't let the beta dog on the couch with you
in order to show her extra love. This will only exacerbate the tension
between them and cause the alpha to be all the harder on beta. If you
want to show some extra love for the under dog, try to do it out of
the sight of the alpha dog. Maybe take her in a room and let her on
your bed or something. I know this all seems pretty harsh and tragic,
but dogs are a lot tougher and more "matter of fact" than we are. I
don't think the lower members of a pack are sad about their role - the
submissive, sad-looking postures they adopt are just an inborn
instinct that facilitates the order that allows a pack to function.

Clay touched upon an important point: You (and truth told, all your
family) must be above every dog in your household. I realize that it's
difficult to get one's family to be consistent. But inconsistency can
ruin your chances of a successful integration. In my opinion,
inconsistent treatment of a dog is cruelty. Don't confuse the poor
thing. Each family member needs to be on board - this should be agreed
upon right away. Unfortunately, I have to say that some training is
really necessary to establish the humans as alpha. A domineering
presence alone is often not enough (and the more elegant members of
the house can't pull this off anyway).

So if you can just do a few basic things with the dog like

1. Making them wait before going through doorways or gates - you go
first, then you give them permission to go.

2. Just do the basic sit and lay down commands - lay down is an
especially good way to establish the dog's submission to you.

3. Teach the dog to fetch. Even if you don't like playing fetch with
your dog, do it. Because it is the best way to get the dog its much
needed exercise! You just have to stand or sit there and chuck
something and the dog runs her heart out. A tired dog is a good dog!!
This will also allow you to get her to master letting go of something
that she has in her mouth. Watch out, of course, for problems of
tension between the two dogs over the possession of the fetching
article.

4. A dog is almost always happier when it has some sort of "job" to
do. Teach her to carry grocery bags for you or something like that.
But this is down the road after you have progressed past some things.

I'll also add: when fights break out, you may want to try to grab the
*winning* dog by the hips and drag her away in that fashion. You can
also grab her by the tail if necessary. It won't hurt her. Do be ready
to release your grip should she whip around and try to bite you. Keep
your face away from the action. And do not reach toward the dog's
faces with your hands! Please tell this to all your family members.
Most times, though, the dog remains focused on their adversary as you
clu
