[MBZ] W123 Starter

2008-07-08 Thread B Dike
Hello All,

My 82 300CD starter refuses to respond.  No click, nothing.  Battery is fine.
Can the solenoid be replaced separately from the starter?  What other starter
relays, fusable links, etc., might be at fault?

Thanks,

Bruce

Re: [MBZ] Be Careful Voting this year!

2008-07-08 Thread Scott Ritchey
I think it's called leadership. Presidents also appoint supreme court
justices, negotiate treaties, and veto legislation on occasion. Finally,
they appoint all those others that advise the president and run all the
executive departments. I don't think Lincoln's main function was speech
making.

You have to ask yourself exactly what function the President has in our
country.

He is nothing more than a cheerleader -- keep the nation happy. He/(she)
wields no real power. Fly around the world meeting other powerless
figureheads. Make speeches. Make us feel like we are good folks doing good
in the world.

Bush/2 has broken the mold, or perhaps Chaney. He/they actually managed to
make a major impact on the world, in spite of the Legislative branch. And in
doing so, managed to create absolute chaos.

We shall hope that history does not repeat itself.

McCain is an honorable man. I really like him as a person. However, I fear
his speeches will lead us further down the troubled road in which we are
already mired.

Assuming my thesis is correct, then Obama is a much better speaker.

Thanks, Peter. Does the master link outside clip, the tighter one, fit
easily in the recessed place for it in the tool? The tool instructions from
Performance Parts said the clip would be held in place magnetically, but I
had to force the clip down into the recessed place with channel pliers and
it did not bottom out. The master link is an Iwis brand from Rusty, as is
the chain. The tool has an ST brand stamped on it.
I'm not sure I understand how you press the link back out after you draw the
chain through. I can understand how you can work the clip off the end by
prizing it gently.

Thanks, Don. I'm 'way too far out of practice to trying peening, so I

Uh -- WHAT history? What organization has he managed? He managed a
fighter-training squadron in Pensacola (VF-124, I think) after his POW days,
where he was in charge of about 150 folks who were transitioning from flight
training to jets.

Unfortunately, I probably have more management experience than McCain -- and
I'd hardly think I was qualified to run a nation.

I fall back on what someone recently said -- getting your jet shot out of
the sky does not qualify you to be President. ... I went through the very
same flight training program in Pensacola as McCain. I flew in the same
squadron. He beat me to retirement by two ranks.

Would you want ME to be your President based on that experience?

Hell, Wilton retired at the same rank as McCain and had way more flight
hours (and time-over-target).

Shall we do a write-in for Wilton based on his experience?

D.

Neither of those turkeys, but at least we have adequate history to judge McLame

a major party nominee for President in 2008 without accomplishing anything in

They are among the worst, only to be outdone IMO by Continental. I
flew an American MD-80 (originally a DC-9 I think) back from Texas
earlier this year, and it had jet fuel pouring out of the wing all the
way, as well as peeling paint and ratty upholstery.

Frontier was one I liked, too bad they are going out of business.

Re: [MBZ] The joy of travel

2008-07-08 Thread LWB250
Did you bother to check the nameplate as you went through the door?

I always stop and look at the tag to see the in-service date, and I don't go
through until I find it. It seems to irritate the cabin crew and unnerve the
people behind me, who invariably ask what I am looking for and why. My
response?

"I like to see if the plane I'm flying on is older than me."

Heh.

[MBZ] The joy of travel

2008-07-08 Thread RELNGSON
Well, having barely survived a trip to Charlotte NC from Seattle and return
on American Airlines, I'm so damned fed up with the whole thing, I doubt if I
will be taking any more airline trips for awhile.

Giving credit where it is due, I am grateful that all four legs left on time
or early and my baggage didn't end up in Capetown. But as I staggered down the
jetway at 0540 and observed what looked like seventeen coats of paint on the
clapped-out MD-80 I was to be held prisoner in for a while, and then inside
seeing the shabby beat up interior and the 1/2 inch of knee room I had in seat
14D, I thought that after this trip the airplane should be flown to
Davis-Monthan AFB and the crew hitchhike home.

I did enjoy the cracker and 1/2 cup of tepid water that was served.

To their credit, the cabin and flight crews did their best with what they had
to work with and didn't end up machine gunning the lot of us.

Re: [MBZ] this vista machine is a slow pos

2008-07-08 Thread Loren Faeth
Vista is a trainwreck, but you can turn off the aqua and a bunch of
other stuff, and turn on the "classic" interface and optimize for
performance. Then you end up with basically a Windows 2000 machine
with all the patches and SPs. The other option is just to load XP
and spend a day loading all the SPs and patches.

Try reading about "optimize for performance" in the help. It should
tell you how to do it.

Once you turn off the "aqua" fake macintosh interface, you pretty
much have a xp machine , but less stable.
When you turn on the classic interface and optimize for performance
you have the look and feel of Windows 2000, but at Mach speed.

[MBZ] Be Careful Voting this year!

2008-07-08 Thread Tom Hargrave
OLD BUTCH

John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers
(hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and
was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and
attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could
tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the
porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this
morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to
investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets,
bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for
cover. To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it
couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next
one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair
and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the
judges not only awarded old Butch the NoBellPiece Prize but they also
awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician
could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our
planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them
when they weren't paying attention.

VOTE CAREFULLY THIS YEAR...THE BELLS ARE NOT ALWAYS AUDIBLE

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

Re: [MBZ] Wheels?

2008-07-08 Thread TE
I've got a very nice set of used Bundt's for sale. 14 X 6.5 ET30. They will
fit perfectly on a W115 and the 6.5 rim width gives you more flexibility
when choosing a tire size.

Subject: [MBZ] Wheels?

"The factory part number on the rims is the only number I see, and I am
told by Mercedes that the first 4 digits of the part # represents the
size. The part # is 1465D305112P66. I have measured them and that
appears to be the size."

This is what the lady says in response to my question about the size. Is she
correct? Will the bundt's be 14 X 6.5?
If I recall, that is the size of the standard steel wheels.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL won't idle

2008-07-08 Thread Peter Frederick
There are several failures that can cause the engine to stall coming
to idle. A sticking rack comes to mind first, and the cure is to
dump a bottle of RedLine fuel treatment into a full tank of fuel, or
do a PowerService treatment -- either one will dissolve the gummy
stuff keeping the rack closed when it should be moving to slight open
the sleeve slots.

A mechanical idle set too low will make this worse (since it goes too
far shut then), and a failed OVP will disable the idle control. If
the tach dives to zero with the engine banging away then stalling,
it's most likely the OVP, as the computer that controls the idle
speed drives the tach too. You do need to set the mechanical idle
higher. If the condition is worse with the AC on, it's for sure
partially or wholly the OVP or idle control system.

Unplugging the idle control solenoid will make it worse, not better,
by the way.

My brother's SDL is doing this, and I keep telling him to go get
another relay, but he always makes excuses.

no, but it costs more when it leaks out.

i've had the tranny pulled twice to fix the leaks and both times were
failures at huge expense to me. no more tranny pulling for me.

Re: [MBZ] More problems....Chain installation question?

2008-07-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Use the one that slides on as the center link (although we have had
to push the link through that one too) and the tigher one on the
outside.

They are supposed to fit tight. If the tool presses them on, it's
correct. We usually use the pressed on but not crimped piece to draw
the old chain through, press the link back out, install it in both
ends of the new chain, and swage.

I vote for your first guess, fuel delivery problem of some kind---bad
filter, crud in the tank, etc. All my 603 experience says the same
thing about the idle regulation system (properly termed EDS, I
believe)---idle is rougher without it, but I've left it disconnected
by accident and never known the car to stall.

[MBZ] the great dick van patten strikes again! (dog food off topic)

2008-07-08 Thread Gary Hurst
suburbia is moving out in all directions in atlanta. i am at what is
traditionally considered the at the far east of the atlanta metro area, but
the reality is that suburbia is popping up as far as 15 miles east of me
right now. about 20 miles east of here is a real rural country feed store,
boss brothers, that has decided to greet suburbia by building up a really
killer dog food department, starting pretty much where walmart ends (science
diet) and moving through all the way to recent kill freshly frozen packaged
for your pooch. i go there once a month to get a giant bag of innova and
something else, whether it is something on special or something i haven't
tried before.

the problem with the frozen kill stuff is that it is a bloody mess to work
with. it might be the best stuff you can find anywhere, but it is not
pleasant to work with. i don't like canned food as it is messy as well and
isn't all that much better than kibble. so what to supplement poochies
kibble with? i mostly use fresh bones from the butcher, which is clean and
great for them. pig tails are a favorite of mine. sometimes, though, the
supermarket butcher doesn't have anything to sell you for the dogs and you
really don't want to make another trip. anther alternative is cleaned up
frozen patties, but generally you can only find these in upscale social
conscious area shops (for example, there is a superb shop in
morningside/virginia highlands by the mike froedge coffee shop).

dick van patten now gives us a third alternative, the equivalent of chubs of
salamis for dogs. it has a long shelf life at room temperature (12 months
if not opened). easy to work with with a relatively hard consistently and
not disgusting at all to handle or smell. the dogs like it too!

[MBZ] Wheels?

2008-07-08 Thread R A Bennell
"The factory part number on the rims is the only number I see, and I am
told by Mercedes that the first 4 digits of the part # represents the
size. The part # is 1465D305112P66. I have measured them and that

This is what the lady says in response to my question about the size. Is she
correct? Will the bundt's be 14 X 6.5?
If I recall, that is the size of the standard steel wheels.

Re: [MBZ] '78 300D

> "45 MPG 1979 300D Mercedes - $3000 (Keller)"

Since I bought a '78 300D new and drove it nearly seven years and 120K
miles, I have a pretty good idea what sort of car it is/was.
Milan Brown metallic, tan tex interior, polished Bundt wheels, euro lights
with wipers, high end Alpine sound system. Tricked the AC into putting out cold
air which it didn't do much of, stock.

As to the 45mpg claim, well, we all know that's a damned lie. At normal
cruising speeds on level ground with everything adjusted perfectly the thing
will
not quite reach 29mpg. Whaddaya want with 77hp in a big heavy car? 21mpg around
town (my town at least) is about normal. According to an MB document long
since lost, top speed was 99 mph at a governed 4400 rpm, once achieved in the
wilds of British Columbia. Took a while.

As to reliability on a 30 year old car, every single thing under the hood
except the engine will have been replaced already, some multiple times.

During my car's warranty period these bits failed:

Power steering pump
Radiator
Water pump
Thermostats
Heater vacuum servo valve
AC condenser
Alternator
13 injectors
AC control panel (buttons)
Some sort of transmission hiccup, can't recall.

Later:
Driver's window lift mechanism disintegrated. Replaced in the driveway easily
and cheap.
Right side wiper mechanism did the same.
Probably five sets of tires.
More which I've forgotten, now.

It's worth mentioning that my 300D cost about 1/2 of my '08 C300 cost and was
about the same size but a bit lighter. The C300 (228hp, 4-cam 3-liter V-6,
7-speed auto) also gets 21 mpg in town but will likely eke out 30 mpg highway
on
premium and is a flex-fuel vehicle which could run on E85 if desired.

I still think that my 123 was a good solid car, just the right size, handled
and braked OK if a bit ponderous and you just have to learn to live with the
weak performance and engine noise. Wouldn't mind having another as a second
car. Well, third actually. Wouldn't pay 3000 bucks, though.

[MBZ] 300SDL won't idle

2008-07-08 Thread John Robbins
A friend's parents have a 300SDL that won't idle. The car will run fine
down the road, but you have to apply throttle to keep it running at
idle. If you take your foot off of the throttle at idle it will drop
below idle, surge above idle, then shut off. There is no smoke, and the
onset of the problem was fairly sudden. The delivery valves are leaking
a little bit.

My thoughts are fuel filters -> delivery valves -> bad injection pump
governor.

The 126 chassis CDs are usually available on eBay, though they are
often pirated copies (they work fine). Rick's suggestion will get you
the real thing.

[MBZ] Q about wheels

2008-07-08 Thread R A Bennell
I have a 1976 115 300D. It currently has the steel wheels and hubcaps.

I noticed last evening, an ad for a set of 4 "bundt" style aluminum wheels from
an MB for $300.

The wheels look good in the photo. Will they likely fit onto my car?

If I recall previous info, they should but I will need the longer wheel bolts?
Also, I assume the bolts are
available with a chromed head so they match the wheel better?

Does Rusty carry the right bolts?

What do I need to know? I guess I could look to see the exact size of the
wheels on my car and then look at the
size on the ones for sale but I won't bother to go look at these if they are
not going to work.

I'd pay $1k for that with a blown engine in heartbeat.

I think I am going to look at some vanagons as well but would <3 to have
a MBZ. I saw a sweet 107D RV conversion in Germany last time I was
there. Looking for something small and bug proof to take the girls

Re: [MBZ] eBay Auction 1972 280SEL 4.5

2008-07-08 Thread LarryT
I think Chuck was speaking more about the nature of this particular type of
car - a full sized sedan with a big V8. It was very fast and luxurious. As
opposed to a diesel that could be converted to run on french fry grease --

I was lucky enough to own a '72 28SE 4.5 - the SEL was the same except for
a 4" additionalm space in the rear seat area. MB engineers are known to
have commented that this was probably the best big MB sedan ever made.

The engine in mine was in pretty good mechanical condition and even so it
only got around 14mpg when tuned perfectly. But all that was forgotten
once the speedo got above 80mph - the road got quieter, the wind noise
subsided and best of all the chassis changed the whole character of the car.
The suspension became smooth and compliant - soaking up bumps and tar
strips with the feel of a Ferrari/Cadillac combination!

They're amazing cars but like all from that time they can rust severely.
The front bumper support, lower fenders, headlight buckets, rockers (big
time!) and rear quarters -

2008-07-08 Thread Steve MacSween
Rolf, if you are in a hurry you had better plan on visiting ebay.de and
importing it yourself.

If you have time, check craigslist.com and ebay.com on a regular basis. They
do turn up now and again, and usually in need of something so they aren't
expensive. However, if it isn't located close by, transporting it WILL be
expensive.

If you are willing to forgo cheap, I can track down the URL of a company
located near Montreal, Canada that imports VW and Mercedes campers from
Europe. But they are expensive and if my memory of Mercedes model numbers is
accurate, newer than what you want.

Not aware of any MB Vans sold here -- perhaps a grey market van once in a

incredible MB RVs in The Star from time to time -

I was thinking about it last night, and I think you are correct. The
one valve by itself is probably the one that needs to be flipped, though
I put them all back in the same as they came out, (I am pretty sure of
that). I guess we will fool with it a bit again today, try to just take
the cover off without taking the whole thing off again (what a pain job
that is).

I've noticed that too - we also see that in our local newspapers & Trading
Posts - any diesel MB is advertised to get 30 and up - wild imaginations or
flat out lies. Perhaps they are selling because the mileage is less than
advertised?

In addition to the high mpg's, any MB more than 5 years old is said to be
"RARE" - even W123s which were made in greater quantities than any other
MB -

[MBZ] More problems....Chain installation question?

2008-07-08 Thread Archer
More problems. The outside clip is supposed to seat very precisely in the
chain press tool from Performance Products. It won't even go down in the
seat and shape of the seat looks different. If I try to mount the link, the
link will be crooked or might not even go on the link. The links and the
chain appear to be OEM IWIS. It must be either the wrong chain or the wrong
chain criimper. (#$%^&*!!!)

Put the '83 300D in the shop about a month ago to adjust the valves and do
routine service. The chain stretch was sitting on 5 so I decided to put on
a new one. Then the A/C in the shop went bad and I had to stop and install
a new one. Then a leak developed behind the false partition or or around
the water heater which is under the sink top and inaccessible until the car
comes out of the shop (it's still leaking.) Then I came down with acute
diverticulitis and haven't been able to do much for over a week. Tonight I
was making progress the on car but probably have the wrong tool or the wrong
chain. (#$%^&*!!!).
End of rant.
Gerry
P.S. Figured out the chain link color problem below. Only the silver
colored clip with slide on the link to the middle. The black clip won't
even start on the link, but the tool will probably press it on (Class 3
fit?)

[MBZ] How Long's It Been?

2008-07-08 Thread Luther
How Long's It Been?

An old but still ruggedly handsome Sergeant Major found himself at a gala event
hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no shortage of extremely
young, idealistic ladies in attendance, one of whom approached the Sergeant
Major for conversation. "Excuse me, Sergeant Major, but you seem to be a very
serious man. Is something bothering you?"

"Negative, ma'am. Just serious by nature."

The young lady looked at his awards and decorations and said, "It looks like you
have seen a lot of action."

"Yes, ma'am, a lot of action."

The young lady, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said, "You know,
you should lighten up a little. Relax and enjoy yourself."

The Sergeant Major just stared at her in his serious manner. Finally, the young
lady said, "You know, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but when is the
last time you've been with a woman?"

"1955, ma'am."

"Well, there you are. You really need to chill out and quit taking everything so
seriously!? I mean, 1955!?"

Feeling charitable and a little bit drunk, she took his hand and led him to a
private room where she proceeded to spend some time with him. Afterwards,
panting for breath, she leaned against his chest and said, "Wow, you sure
didn't forget much since 1955!"

The Sergeant Major, glancing at his watch, said in his matter-of-fact voice, "I
hope not, it's only 2130 now."

[MBZ] Chain installation question?

2008-07-08 Thread Archer
Got ready to install the chain on my '83 300D and read the instructions that
came with the tool from Performance Products which said to use the outer
clip with "IWIS" on it. Both clips have IWIS on them but there is a
difference in color: one is black, the other is silver.
There must be a reason for the clips of different colors. One is probably
supposed to go in the center and the other being the outer clip. The black
clip is the color of spring steel.
The clips I took off of the old chain are not different colors. I miked the
new clips and they are both the same thickness. I have two new links; one
came with the chain and the other from Rusty. Both are the same with two
links of different colors.
All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gerry
