Re: [MBZ] U-pullery

2008-08-12 Thread Jim Cathey
I got the parallel glow plug conversion system from the 200D finnie,
relay and all, the car looked like it had a later 240D engine in it.
(It had an engine-lubricated injection pump.) I also got a 'chrome'
air intake grille and wipers from the 280. $20. Really too bad about
the 200D, it wasn't all that rusty and looked to be in fairly decent
shape. Looks like an abandoned project car. Too bad about the 280,
it wasn't very rusty at all. Lots gone, including the glass, doors,
and dash. I wonder if it would be worth getting the blower fan? Most
of the hard stuff has been done towards gettin at it. It's stiff
enough that it couldn't have been working anymore, but it could also
serve as a rebuild base. Last thing I need is another project. Just
like the 200D's engine and tranny could be the basis for driving
the second big generator. Not!

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: THE TALE OF THE ARAB FLIGHT CREW

2008-08-12 Thread Steve MacSween
As is the corrected information that apparently none of those on board were
even airline employees. And in any case, the airlines operated in the UAE
have virtually no Arab pilots. Most are European with some from other
nations.

Incidentally in my quick perusal not one reputable source is repeating the
information about the circuit breaker having been pulled.

In any case the cost of an Airbus is spare change for them anyway. A friend
of mine's brother flies a cargo 747 full-time for some Sheikh or other...
who keeps the aircraft in service soley for the purpose of transporting his
show horses around the world.

He has two other fully equipped private jetliners for his personal travel.
The flight crew includes Canadians, Swedes and Germans.

I don't quite see the problem. If they thought the car was
selling for too little they could buy it themselves for a higher
bid, then do whatever they wanted with it. As a dealer, they
don't have to pay retail sales tax. That's what we have, not
a VAT.

> Maybe just sent the money to the church and took a tax deduction for

They cannot deduct the sale price. If they did it would be
tax fraud, or so I'd think. The widow made a donation, the
amount determined at open auction. Everything else was a
straight sale. The church owned the car, and contracted out
its sale through an auction agent. (Who was also the buyer,
as it turns out.) Naturally they didn't pay themselves 10%.
How would they even do that?

I guess I don't see the problem, unless the auction house was also
responsible for advertising the auction and deliberately underperformed
there so as to be able to cherry-pick.

85 Ford Tempo 4 cyl. Mazda Diesel, 5 speed trans,171k, 4 door. Runs and
drives good. Drivers side front fender has a dent and the hood is bent
on the rear corner( yes it latches shut). The paint on the hood, top and
trunk lid is all but faded away.the body is very solid almost no rust.
Tires are old but they have good tread. All the glass is good. Top of
dash has cracks. I just recently put new headlights in it,a new Ever
Start Maxx 900-770amp battery,Front brake hose, front brake pads, and a
solenoid. Title in hand.

This Gem also comes with a parts car at no extra charge. It is an 84(I
believe) Ford Escort four door hatchback. The car has in it two short
block 4 cyl. diesel engines, and two 5 speed trans.

This is the same car Chuck and I looked at on Saturday.? Neither of
us stayed to see it sell but Chuck was told it went for 5K.? NOT
coincidently, the seller has the same address as the auction
 house!?

I guess if he can make a quick grand, more power to him.? But if
the sale time was manipulated so that the heat drove all the buyers
away, I say Shame!? This unit was supposed to be number 4 ( I
wrote it down) but didn't come up until way later

It is still a nice car, a?small scrape on the lower right rear door
was the only physical problem I saw.

Re: [MBZ] 80 300SD goes to market

2008-08-12 Thread Chuck Landenberger
Jim, et al

I got a call from a guy who stayed around and gave me the straight
skinny... Car went for a bid of $4,000. the Auction house told
me $5,000 when I called them. Who to trust? The guy who called me

Just the facts... The auction house charges 10% and adds the AZ
sales tax of 8.1% to the bid price so, whoever bought? it ended up
giving the auction house $400 and the state $342.

And I agree SHME! So, the auction house paid $4,000 for the
car donated by a widow to benefit a church and is now trying to sell
it for a profit... Just gotta' wonder if they paid the sales tax?
Maybe just sent the money to the church and took a tax deduction for
a "donation". Of course, they did not pay themselves the 10%. SAD!

Here it is: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/ctd/793974698.html

Maybe it's just a vent, since we can't speak one on one to discuss

Your contribution of Mercedes-Benz knowledge would elevate the level

admire ability and tenacity etc but
jeepers, at the end of the day you don't get much for it.

I have not seen it lately but there used to be an older Ford pickup running
around town that had custom made
stainless steel bumpers - big boxy things that were well made but ugly as sin.
I assume the owner was the craftsman
and was probably a trained welder etc but it must have taken hours and hours

If you can convince the voters that they must vote for one of two choices, and

votes is to scare the voters into voting against the other guy. Campaign ads

strategy, which I take as an admission that they can't present any good reason
to vote FOR them, so they are going for votes AGAINST the other guy.

You don't? Both parties have been doing it for years. Some of the most
egregious examples I can think of off the top of my head are:

"Willy Horton" in 1988 (done by my party unfortunately)
The "Daisy Girl" bomb commercials (Dems) 1964
Any of the "lock box" commercials in 2000 (Gore)

I don't need anyone to scare me into not voting for Obama. His own positions
(specifically what HE said in the debates) on taxes is what scares me.

2008-08-12 Thread harry watkins
I don't think you can SCARE the American people into voting one way or the
other. In the end, they will look at there choices and decide. I believe I
know where Senator McCain stands on most issues because he has been around
many years. I sure don't agree with many of his beliefs.

I know very little about Senator Obama and I follow these things pretty
close. Basically he was a State Senator that won a seat in the US Senate.
A short time later he started to explore a presidential run and that has
continued. What bills did he sponsor/co-sponsor? Was he able to move them
forward? Where did he stick out his neck or make a hard stand on anything?
Did he win those or any other tough fights?

I know he is a smooth talker, can draw a crowd and convince people that he
brings change and hope. That's not enough for me. He has so many handlers
that he seems to get mixed up on what they want him to say. He will make a
wonderfully phased statement on a pop-up issue and then change it within
hours. That makes me wonder if the polls changed his mind, or a different
set of handlers made a better case than the first set of handlers.

I heard he had 300 advisers on foreign affairs. Is that true?

Actually if your engine is dumping unburned fuel into the cat then the

[MBZ] 1985 300SD AC - Repair (Screw up?)

2008-08-12 Thread George Larribeau
The Good News. It gets cold.

The bad news, uses lots of power and makes freighting noises. Compressor, line
that attaches to compress or and dryer were replaced. System was evacuated for
1.5 hours with a ½ HP 2stage vacuum pump.

There was basically no Freon left in the system when the repair was started and
there was not any oil recovered from the old compressor (held it upside down
and maybe 2 drops).

The first time I hung the new compressor I filled it with 170 CC oil but it
poured out when I tried to install it. I captured the oil and measured it at
about 120 CC loss and after I got it installed I put 120 CC into the low side
hose. I evacuated the system, held vacuum but when I charged it the compressor
seal failed immediately. That is when I got the right seals fro Rusty got it re
connected. When I replaced the dryer at this point I put about 60 CC oil in the
dryer and another 120 CC or so in the low side compressor hose. Re-evacuated
system 1.5 Hr and charged it with about 2.7 cans of Freon. I was convinced that
I lost the oil when the Freon leak out the first time (less that ½ can involved
here, it did hold a vacuum I believed that it was sealed) . I got the Idea to
put the extra oil in it some where ( bad advice?).

When the weather cools off (or it dies) I am going to remove the Freon (I have
a slightly tired but useable recovery unit) and replace the expansion valve,
the drier (again) and this time attempt to flush the system. Has any one ever
used the aerosol flush "Super Cool air conditioning flush with hose"?

'Point about conservation of energy was referring to the elec power that it
takes to separate the H from the O. You're not gonna get it for free. It
takes some more fuel for the engine to produce the additional electricity
used to separate the H from the O. Ya still not gonna get something for
nothing. The fuel for the engine is not free; the elec is not free; the H2

I believe most of that is due to the super high tech/well designed
catalytic converters. They've improved the combustion yes (increased
MPG)... but the cleaner air out than what came in is due to the cats.

The gas direct injection engines are long overdue IMO, and they are
reportedly going to make the gassers comparable to diesels in efficiency.

We had a sickle grinder. Kind of like a swing saw. When I was 8 or
9 I had to start grinding sickle bars. The old AC mower that was on
the JD was a little more complex to pull the sickle. On the JD we
had to pull a pin. I don't remember how the sickle on the IH mower
unhoooked. I liked the 9' mower on the 2020 because it was big and
unwieldy. You had to put the bar to vertical manually, and that was
a bear, so we drove it around with the bar down mostly. I liked the
IH because it was a 1967 mower and the hydraulic cylinder raised the
mower in two stages. All we had to do was put on the chain so the
pressure could be let off the hydraulics.

When I was little I went to the Shrine Circus (they sponsored the RBB&B

driving with some little go-cart kind of things.  They were wearing
fezzes and were generally fat (the Shriners, not the little go-cart
things, which were painted metal-flake), straining the little go-carts
mightily.  I really wanted to be a Shriner but my mother told me I
couldn't until I was older, though she bought me a fez at the junk

a fez though.

Re: [MBZ] H2-O2 vs mileage

2008-08-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
Modern engines with catalytic converters run very slightly above the
stoichiometric point, so little that there is no measurable impact on the
car's fuel economy, at least none that we can measure. They run slightly
above to minimize carbon monoxide.

The primary task of a catalytic converter is to reduce nitrogen oxides and
carbon monoxide and both of these components have already been burned. In
other words, a catalytic converter does not burn anything! It's already been
burned!

The process inside a catalytic converter is not a combustion process; it's a
reaction in the presence of a catalyst. No additional oxygen is being
introduced for anything to burn and if oxygen were introduced then nothing
would burn.

A catalytic converter gets hot during the process but the heat it produces
is very minor when compared to the heat energy that's lost through the
radiator and exhaust from the engine.

In a sense that doesn't count, as much of that 'efficiency' is
due to final combustion inside the catalytic converter where it
does nothing for propulsion. If you could do anything to make
the existing burn more complete, and/or have its pressure curve
somehow better shaped for extraction of energy via the piston
as it moves over its sinusoidal path, then you would see a gain.

Supposedly, yes. My neighbor's done some research.

> And is this gain more than you would get by
> advancing the timing until an equal combustion pressure was attained?

Good question. I do know that if you're seeing soot you're
seeing unburned fuel, so there's room for improvement in the
basic diesel process.

In the 70's, we had a F100 with a topper on the back, and pass through windows
on both. The dog, riding in the back, loved the wind tunnel effect between the
cab and cap, which would bring many wonderful smells to him. He could hold his
nose there all day, despite the fact that it made him sneeze. If you opened the
back window on the cab to take advantage of this breeze, it often came with a
bonus of sloppy wet dog sneeze down the back of your neck.

Re: [MBZ] OT Farmall Promenade Was Synchro diving

2008-08-12 Thread Rich Thomas
When I was little I went to the Shrine Circus (they sponsored the RBB&B
Circus when it came to town) and saw a bunch of Shriners doing sychro
driving with some little go-cart kind of things. They were wearing
fezzes and were generally fat (the Shriners, not the little go-cart
things, which were painted metal-flake), straining the little go-carts
mightily. I really wanted to be a Shriner but my mother told me I
couldn't until I was older, though she bought me a fez at the junk
stand. Now that I am older I don't want to be a Shriner. I still want
a fez though.

Same thing happens with an SL if you take off the trunk lid and
bring home a load of mulch that way. :-)

That's why that pop-up windscreen is so highly thought of,
it removes that from-the-rear buffeting at speed yet preserves
the convertible experience.

S'help me, I've always thought a 107 SL-camino would be a mighty
fine looking rig, if one had a body shop of one's own. Or
a big checkbook. Just don't haul mulch in it with the lid off.

2008-08-12 Thread Jim Cathey
> I don't miss changing sickle bars and changing the sickles

I don't remember it being all that hard. Pop one latch
lever and slide the bar out the end. Knock off a tooth
with a BFH with one swipe on the anvil, shearing the old
rivets, and rivet on a new tooth using the little IH
molded anvil doohickey and the same BFH. Couple more
swipes per tooth. We had the requisite box of teeth
and a jar of the copper rivets. Putting them on would have
been much harder without the anvil jig that held the bar
and the blade in relative position.

We'd only replace individual teeth that got damaged. When
the whole bar was dull we'd take them in to swap for a sharp
one at the co-op. That was fairly cost-effective.

Yep. I did that mostly with the JD H and 7' sickle, and then the
2020 with a 9' sickle bar and some with the IH 240., again with a 7'
sickle. I don't miss changing sickle bars and changing the sickles
on the bar. But you can do things with a sickle bar mower that you
can't come close to with a rotary mower, and vice versa. My dream
was always to have a JD 730 Diesel. The last of the big 2 cylinders.

If anyone is interested in a nice tractor for shows and
tractor-rides, the 2020 and its 9' JD model 10 mounted sickle bar
mower and the 240 IH with mounted sickle bar and rear mounted
forklift will be sold at the auction. There will be live online
bidding. Just don't know the dates yet. 2020 was just
overhauled. Has good paint and new rear tires.it will go
anywhere. JD 1530 is similar, but it still has the original tires,
also overhauled a couple of hundred hours ago. 2020 probably has
less than 100 hr after overhaul.
