Re: [MBZ] Had / got to drive the company's Suburban yesterday

2008-08-28 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN Charleston SC J63
I'm tempted to bottom-feed on a diesel-powered SUV now. I would think that the
double whammy of high fuel costs and higher diesel fuel than RUG would mean a
nice bargaining advantage.

Even though I probably wouldn't need it very often (tow the boat on weekends in
the summer, occasional road trips to Asheville or Atlanta), it sure would be
nice to have a spacious ride for the family, and right now the cash flow is
such that we may be able to pay cash in 6 months or so...

Hmmm, can I justify tying up the cash and paying the insurance premiums?
Probably not...

Very respectfully,

/s/

I'd just thought the other day that I should get the bearings checked and
repacked, its been a while...

The ones on my 300sD were done while it was up for the new ball joint. One
of my 300CD's had a wheel bearing groan -- I guess it's not good to put it
off too long.

Re: [MBZ] Had / got to drive the company's Suburban yesterday/McMansions

2008-08-28 Thread Wonko the Sane
Those are the standard houses in the DC suburbs located in northern
Virginia. Used to own one myself (Lake Ridge, VA). They are popular in areas
where there are two income families making obscene (to me) wages. The "poor"
(which I was) had a combined income, in the early '80s, of just the low six
digits.

In the area where I lived, that normally meant a military officer and a
working wife, and sometimes a married couple where both were mid-level or
even senior military officers. Also senior GS/GM civil service folks working
for the government. A couple of SES folks thrown into the mix, too. [Andrew
will understand completely.]

I was the junior officer in the neighborhood. Had a General living about a
mile from me. There was an Army Colonel who was killed by terrorists -- his
name escapes me now -- who I used to see jogging every day until he
disappeared. Beirut, I think. Higgins or something like that?

The house in discussion listed for $260K (early 1980s) -- I got it for
$235K. Mortgage payments were no sweat -- about half a month's take-home for
me, money still left over for two car payments. Nice colonial, four bedrooms
(with one of the bedrooms actually a sitting room, with French doors,
adjoining the master bedroom suite). In the center of a quiet cul de sac. 2
1/2 baths, walk-out finished basement, two car garage (with three cars,
counting the MGB), huge lot.

And lots of stress, unhappiness and broken marriages all around me --
including my first marriage.

McMansions are not out of the reach of many folks. It all depends on the
dollar amount that shows up on your pay stub, and whether you want to pump
your income into your dwelling or your savings account.

My two younger brothers (Florida) both live in what are essentially gated
communities. Really nice, big houses. So what?

It is all about priorities. I much prefer where I live now ($75K house).

Re: [MBZ] Recent IRS Ruling (no joke)

2008-08-28 Thread Gary Hurst
this doesn't make any sense. what sort of margins does a big supermarket
chain operate one?

let's say 5 percent, although i understand the total is lower. so they will
be losing 23 percent on every card sale (which is a lot), which they can
recover in a year or so?

this would put nearly everyone who operates on taking credit cards out of
business. not even my government is quite this stupid.

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh

2008-08-28 Thread Peter Frederick
It's not in the hub, it's on the axle shaft. It woudn't budge when
heated red hot with a propane torch. The rear axles on a K-car are
welded to a flat plate, just long enough to mount the wheel on. They
bolt to the sheet metal and torsion bar axle under the car. A weld
bead might fracture the race, but the axle is still junk.

The new one cost me maybe $50, and used ones are non-existant -- they
make perfect trailer axles!

The old farmer's race removal trick is to run a nice fat
hot bead down the inside of the race with the arc welder.
When it cools it shrinks, pulling the race away from the
hub. It might take more than one bead to break it loose.

That was the secret to getting the carbs out of my Merc 850.
That little socket and skinny shaft just slipped right in there.
I outfitted the boat toolkit with 1/4" sockets in all the sizes
it uses, and a Craftsman ratchet and a few lengths of extension
so that I'd always have the right-fitting tool. Nothing like
working over water with zero depth to your tool and engine parts

My 1/4" socket tool collection is thin, I need to beef it up.

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh

2008-08-28 Thread Peter Frederick
I had a rear wheel bearing go out kinda like that in Canada -- I was
having some squeaky/clanky noises on the right rear, and assumed I
had corroded brake shoes and needed to pull the drum and grease them
where they contact the backing plate (they rub on a Dodge Aries).
This is fairly common in Canada, the salt on the roads eats everything.

Before I got to it, I made my weekly trip across the bridge back to
the US to shop and pick up mail, and heard a terrible crunch followed
by really bad squeaking and thumping, so I limped home and jacked it up.

The bearings were so worn that the cage had been rolled through the
bearings. Nasty, shavings all over the place and the rollers were
WAY undersized and rough.

Turns out this is also a common problem in Canada -- bearing gets
warm driving on the highway and then you drive through a puddle of
salty slush. The grease shrinks and sucks salty water into the
bearing if the seal is old, and when the water dries out in the
summer, the resultant salt crystals grind up the bearing. Happens
fairly quick, too.

Never had one smoke before, though -- usually you get some warning
with "loose" steering, lots of rumbling, or grinding or whistling
noise before the bearing actually fails.

I never did get the race off the stub axle, I had to buy a new one.
Still have the old stub somewhere downstairs with the inner race
welded on.

Re: [MBZ] Had / got to drive the company's Suburban yesterday/McMansions

2008-08-28 Thread Redghost
All these McMansions are built on shaky credit. Lots of them out in
PNW are for M$ Minions who bought with stock options before the bubble
burst. I am expecting a bunch of the older ones will do ok, but newer
ones will default, since they are too leveraged.

VW made the Vanagon with a diesel option, it was their standard I4
diesels. It's mounted at a 50 degree angle I think, with a special
oil pan to give it clearance. People who do inline gasser conversion
usually use the bellhousing from a diesel. Done this way, there's no
need to alter the lid. There's also a group in Boston who makes a
conversion kit using a Ford Zetec engine, which also fits under the
lid and has stock or near-stock ground clearance.

Our Plymouth Grand Voyager gets 22 to 24 mpg, will haul a 4x8 sheet of
plywood with the seats out, haul the boat to the lake just fine, seats
7, etc. Hauled the 117 iron engine from MN in it. It's comfortable on
trips, but without soul.

Coming home tonight I got off the highway onto a fast secondary road. Crested a

The steering felt all squirrelly

I felt like I was losing power

I thought maybe I'd blown a tire but when I got out it was immediately apparent
I'd blown the driver's side front wheel bearing. There was smoke pouring out
and the center cap of the wheel was missing and nowhere to be found. Looking
inside I could see a piece of bearing cage.

What the heck? I've never had that happen before. I waited for it to quit
smoking and tried easing forward. The scary squeeking noises made me think

It's more the principle of the matter - that the enginelooks complete
now, after being apart all summer.
If you're referring to the lower manifold to head bolts, I solved that
one years ago on the SDL - use a 1/4" socket set, cut a 6mm Allen
wrench to get a piece to make a bit that fits in the 6mm socket for
the 1/4" drive set. Use an extension - and some blue locktite to hold
the bit in the socket. Fits like a charm.

Post your tool pics - we'd all like to see.

Re: [MBZ] keeping chickens

2008-08-28 Thread Rich Thomas
There's a farm stand across the road and they have all kinds of critters
wandering the place, and a little petting zoo kind of thing for the city
folk. Anyway, they have a bunch of chickens and ducks of various sorts
that lay eggs here and there, and when I stopped there the other day the
woman put a couple of eggs in a basket by the cash register that she had
just found somewhere. Some are blueish and some are pinkish, kinda strange.

A few weeks ago they had a hen with 6 chicks and a duckling following
her around, walking underfoot in the farm stand area. They are quite
tame, like pets. Somehow the duckling got imprinted on the hen, I guess
the first thing it saw when it hatched or maybe the egg got put in her
nest. They had an article in the paper about it.

I adore the TDI engine, but it's always seemed to me like a kludge to
put an inline engine in an engine bay designed for a boxer, since the
shapes are so different. Don't you have to either modify the engine
lid, ruining the nice long flat cargo area (which is one of the
Vanagon's great features), or mount the engine really low, ruining
ground clearance?

Maybe you could wait for the diesel Subarus that are coming here in '09...

useful to have and they offer a lot of utility. The ONLY reason people started

Hmm, interesting. Never having had a Suburban I didn't know they had
a 4x8 load area with the 2nd row seats folded down. Maybe I should
get one to replace my '93 Isuzu Trooper when it dies. I do have an
need now and then for heavy hauling, and for a high-clearance 4x4.

The only thing the Trooper lacks that I'd ideally like to have in the
same occasional-use vehicle would be towing capacity sufficient for a
car trailer with a real car on it (i.e. something that weighs a couple
of tons, rather than a Midget, Formula Ford, etc.). What kind of
trailer can you haul with, let's say, an early-'00s Suburban with the
Vortec 350? Those seem to be awfully cheap these days.

Re: [MBZ] Had / got to drive the company's Suburban yesterday

2008-08-28 Thread R A Bennell
That is the problem and one of the reasons why SUV's became popular. They are
just the tall stationwagons of old.
They haul like a truck and like a van and can tow a trailer or boat etc. I had
a Suburban for 10 years and it was
great for the 175 mile (each way) to the lake. It was a beast in city traffic
and not very fuel efficient in town
either but it was great on the run to the lake. Seatbelts for 9 when needed.
Pull the 3rd seat, flip the 2nd and
haul sheets of plywood like a pickup truck. I moved down to a Toyota 4Runner
and never really found it to be as
useful. I have since gone back up to a fullsized pickup and then on to a
Supercrew in an effort to again get people
capacity and hauling capacity. I wish the insurance folks would let me swap
plates from one to another. I wouldn't
drive the truck much except when I went on the road. I don't need it in town
but I can't have umpteen vehicles so I
stick with the big practical one and pay the price in fuel.

Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. If you had to haul 6 people camping
the Suburban is the way to go. You'd
need 2 190D's to do the same job, maybe 3 if you had a lot of gear.
Better mileage would more than be eaten up by wear on 3 vehicles.

[MBZ] diesel suburban

2008-08-28 Thread Allen Sawyer
I have 95 diesel suburban and drive it at 60 miles per hour on trips. I get 22
mpg at that speed but it would drop 20% at 65. With the 40 gallon tank, it
will easily go more than 800 miles.

Yeah, Andrew needs to do that too. Then his McMansion garage could have

You are so out of touch with the new yupster affectations. You need to
get out in the real world more. Maybe move to the burbs, buy a Burb,
and start living a life of McMansion mirth.

I do kinda like that last one though, I think I sat next to her in

"McMansion" reminds me of another question I've been asking while driving
through the countryside for many years, "Where are all these 30 and
35-year-old people getting all the money to build all these huge houses?"
'Been getting some answers on that recently, haven't we?

BTW, notice how the McMansions try to "out-gable" each other?

With the bailout of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and subprime borrowers, ultimately
the American taxpayer is who will pay. I say "let 'em lose their houses". I was
in foreclosure some years ago due to some unwise decisions. The government was
not lining up to bail me out, I had to do that myself. I say screw 'em. If you
are stupid enough to buy more house than you can afford and there is a bank
greedy enough to finance it, let happen what is going to happen.

If the modulator will not hold vacuum, it does indeed need to be replaced.

To make sure you're testing the right line, get under the car, pull
the end of the suspect line off the modulator and hold your finger
over it or otherwise block it, then test for vacuum again. It's a
long piece of hard, brittle plastic in an inhospitable environment, so
it is "guilty until proven innocent" as far as cracking.

You can then also test the modulator directly, of course, by hooking
the MityVac right to it.

If the modulator itself is truly bad, and if it's like the one on the
'87 124 diesel, replacing it is straightforward in theory but
unpleasant in practice. On my car, there are two almost inaccessible
Allen-head screws holding it in. To see them more clearly so I could
aim at them with the driver, I used a magnet to temporarily stick a
dental mirror to the floorpan next to the transmission.

Get the plastic "modulator piston" as well as the modulator unit
itself beforehand, or at least look at the pictures on Rusty's site so
you have a better idea what you're trying to R&R. On my car, I had to
unscrew the old modulator, wiggle it out, fish the broken piston shaft
out of its recess with tweezers, wiggle the new piston in without
breaking it too, and then hold the new modulator in place with one
hand while installing the mounting screws at an angle with my ball-end
Allen driver in the other hand. Tons of fun!

2008-08-28 Thread Wilton Strickland
"McMansion" reminds me of another question I've been asking while driving
through the countryside for many years, "Where are all these 30 and
35-year-old people getting all the money to build all these huge houses?"
'Been getting some answers on that recently, haven't we?

BTW, notice how the McMansions try to "out-gable" each other?

[MBZ] *&$%#*! parking brake cables

2008-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond
Tuesday when I left for work my wife called to tell me her cell phone was in my
190D. I went back and left the car running while I ran inside. When I got back
on the road the parking brake lever wouldn't go all the way down and the light
was on...

Yesterday while putting the console back together with the fixed fan switch I
worked the parking brake 20 or 30 times which seems to have settled it back
down again.

I hate parking brakes, I never use 'em except once in awhile and then this
happens. The worse one was last spring when the parking brake on the pickup
stuck on at camp and we had to drive 5 miles into town with it on. When we got
to town we had no brakes since the fluid had boiled. That one cost me for all 4
brakes...

The parking brake on my 240D is hopelessly stuck.

So now I think every Saturday I'm gonna go out and actuate the parking brake a
couple times on all my vehicles I'm tired of 'em sticking.

My Dad reads like crazy, every time I go to my parent's house I have to take a
couple bags of books. It takes me months to work through them. Then I have to
give them away, he doesn't want them back. Mostly sci-fi and fantasy stuff.

2x on the Legos. I also had Capcella (sp?) that was neat and a couple other

they were doing poorly as a company before and this has helped?

If you make the right tool it is a walk in the park. On my 2.5T I
couldn't remove the manifold at all without it. When I replaced the
delivery valves a month or so ago, I took the manifold off, replaced the
delivery valve seals (no more leaks!!) and put the manifold back on in
~5 hours. Took me three days to get the manifold off of the '87 300TD
without the tool. Haven't had the chance to work on that car lately though.

If you want pics of the tool I made let me know, and I'll post them to

Huge variance there. Some were absolute pigs, like my Dad's Ciera that got
30mpg
on a good day and did 0-60 in 28 seconds. Others were surprisingly quick. One
time I was in my Citation and a Ciera diesel came up behind me in the left
lane,
moved into the right lane at a red light and looked like he wanted to get the
jump on me. I gave it half throttle when the light turned green to make sure he
didn't do something stupid, like jump in front of me and turn left. He got the
jump on me, got in front of me, and stopped to make a left turn. That move
would
have been way beyond the ability of my dad's diesel.

Re: [MBZ] modulator valve test on W123 AT

2008-08-28 Thread Rich Thomas
I don't know exactly what is on your car, or exactly what you are
referring to (my ignorance), but on the son's 84 SD there are a bunch of
vac hoses going into a little box on top of the valve cover. In trying
to get the vac working, after rebuilding the pump, I traced a problem to
that box. It has about 6 hoses attached to it, and one of them was not
attached tightly (though it appeared to be). I twiddled with all of
them some, using the mightyvac to see what was going on, traced one
hose, reset it, and all was then fine. Not sure why that did anything,
but there you go.

It seems to have an overly complicated set of hoses, connectors, valves,
fittings, crossovers, switches, and whatever to move vacuum around here
and there. Lots of places to "loose" vacuum.

Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. If you had to haul 6 people camping

Better mileage would more than be eaten up by wear on 3 vehicles.

Yes. Are you sure you were on the right line? There's also a
vent line that goes into the cabin. It's open (on purpose) at
the other end.

[MBZ] Neat

2008-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond
Fueleconomy.gov is an interesting site. Today I found a list of diesel vehicles
by year 2009-1985
http://fueleconomy.gov/feg/diesel.shtml

I'd love to have the opportunity to play with some of these cars... Interesting
that my 190D is rated 26/35, my 70,000 mile average is alot closer to 38mpg
with many forays into 40mpg land.

How godawful slow must the GM cars with the 4.3l have been? Thats like an 80hp
motor. 3spd automatic too I suppose not any worse than a 240D but still, an
Oldsmobile wagon must have been an absolute pig.

Anybody else see the 240TD on Youtube that somebody took for a track day?
Serious comedy...

Everybody I know with a burbinator doesn't talk much
about the mileage. They don't use them as grocery

something newer. That's the only one that might
tempt me, it's just as well I didn't know it was

My new 1983 300TD turbodiesel consistently clunks when shifting down as I

heading down to the AT modulator valve from the vacuum control valve. Is
this supposed to hold vacuum? The engine was not running when I performed

Re: [MBZ] Had / got to drive the company's Suburban yesterday

2008-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond
So there were no diesels at all from '92-'93?

According to fueleconomy.gov in '91 the diesel Suburban was rated for 13-20mpg,
the gasser (5.7l) was 11-15. The gasser is probably alot more fun to drive.

Its too bad fueleconomy.gov doesn't list 3/4 ton trucks, I'd love to see what
the camp's big block Suburban was rated for.

For my grandkid's gifts, I set up a credit union savings account for each,
stoked it every month and boosted it on birthdays and Christmas.  Never gave
a gift.

I am still the family bad guy because I didn't give them something to have
fun with.  In the room of one of these kids, they had actually hung a net
from the ceiling in one corner for toy storage because there was not room to
walk.

Back in my Boy Scout days I worked at a summer camp that and a mid- '80s
Suburban (old boxy body style) with a 454ci v8, big tires etc. It had been a
fire department brush truck. The thing was AWESOME, so powerful, so
comfortable. That said it was SPENDY to drive, maybe got 8mpg, way less if you
put your foot into it.

If I had a bunch of kids I'd want a Suburban with a 6.2l diesel, I think they
made those up to '91ish? Should get maybe 15-17mpg. Not a powerhouse but
reasonably thrifty to drive considering folks in New York City would consider
it a comfortable apartment.

Had to take six folks on a field trip for med checks. My turn. We always
take our really nice Suburban that was donated (for the tax write-off) to
us.

Leather seats and power everything. Big honkin' V-8 engine. Very smooth (for
a TRUCK) and reasonably quiet ride.

Drove the Quantum down to the group home where the Suburban stays, parked
the Quantum, fired up the Suburban, drove it back to the office, loaded in
clients, then drove 30 miles to the med check and then 30 miles back to the
office. That was six half-hour med checks with lots of pauses built in --
left at 8:45 and returned to my office at 1:30.

Dropped off the clients at the office, returned the Suburban to the group
home. Crawled back into the Quantum.

Felt like a circus clown in a downsized Mini.

I think I want a Suburban. Wife is extremely in favor of that opinion.

Best part is that the fuel gauge didn't move at all during the round trip. I
think this one might get reasonable mpg.

No, Kaleb, I don't want to buy your Suburban.

Re: [MBZ] 201 fan control?

2008-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond
So you had the opposite failure that I had. On mine the limiting notch in the
rocker broke. I flipped the rocker over, cut a new limiting notch and
reassembled. I installed yesterday and this morning it worked fine.

A really smart engineer would have designed the rockers so they were symetrical
in that plane (perpendicular to the axle I mean) so you could flip them over
and have them work without modification.

I've got one I was going to put back on eBay (from whence
I got it). I bought it for ours, but was able to repair
the broken flipper inside our fan switch.

 From my log:

Pulling out the upper console piece it was time to confront the jammed
blower switch. I had bought a used replacement on eBay, but since the
broken one was nicely held together with screws I thought I'd have a
look inside first before just replacing it. There are three plastic
rockers inside driving spring-loaded electrical contacts, with a
spring-loaded roller wheel that travels along the rockers. The first
rocker had spun around on its post allowing the roller wheel to wedge
itself down into the gap next to the rocker. Careful examination
showed that the reason this happened was that a little plastic
protrusion on the rocker's axle post that mates with a travel-limiting
hole in the rocker had broken off, allowing for more rotation of the
rocker than was intended, and opening up a big gap for the roller to
drop into. This is a weak bit of design there, and the reason that #1
rocker is more susceptible to breaking off the pin is that there is
only the one rocker supporting the force from the roller, everywhere
else two rockers (and limit pins) share the load. To try to fix this
I used a small drill to drill through the shell right next to the axle
where the nub had broken off, then I glued a metal brad into that hole
to serve as a replacement nub, with a reinforcing wire wrapped around
the brad and bent around a corner and screwed into a handy hole. (I
left the brad long so that on the back side there was plenty of
protrusion for the glue [Shoe Goo of course!] to grip to lock it in
position.) I then set it aside to dry.

Later I found that my reinforcing screw was shorting things out,
so I removed it. It's been working since June 11, 2006.

You can spend more on acetylene and be done in half the time!
And, if they end up too short as mine did, you can also weld
extension wrenches on the handle ends. So I figure mine were
more like $5.

My wife (!) borrowed my wrenches to take to a fellow pit orchestra
member with a 240D. So far they haven't made it back. I'm not
worried. Yet. It's not the $5 but the time to make them that
I'm concerned about.

Not much, I'd say. CL mostly isn't involved in the payment
end at all. Not sure about their commercial side whereby the
infrastructure is paid for.

I paid $2 for mine, and maybe 30 cents worth of propane for the torch to
heat them and bend them.

Re: [MBZ] Recent IRS Ruling (no joke)

2008-08-28 Thread LarryT
My business is s so small it may not be worth the added hassle this ruling
will cause. What started as something to occupy my time following becoming
disabled is effective at keeping me busy and organized - but this will not
be a cost effective use of my time.

I always report all income and pay my share of taxes so I'm not sure why
this is necessary - I always assumed the merchant account provider provided
details of my activity to the IRS already so me trying to hide income would
be dumb. Now I hear they weren't required to do this already is quite a
surprise. A big surprise - not that I would have operated differently up to
now.

Guess I'll wait to see how this all works out before deciding to keep the
business going.

I wonder how this affects CraigsList and local "Trading Post" type of sales?
Then's there's flea markets and yard sales - all ways to move money around.
IMHO the IRS should be content with employer related withholding and leave
small time entreprenours alone..

Move, and say it got lost in the move.

Oh, not that again! It appears that I've LOST my valve adjustment wrenches
in this last move. I'm hoping and praying that they're in the storage shed
(the place where everything goes that didn't quite fit). I sure don't want
to pay another $120 if I don't have to!
