Re: [MBZ] 240D brake/bearing question
When I was a young lad, my mentor told me that wheel bearings should be serviced by repacking, which did not mean Cleaning perfectly good grease out of them, thereby risking infiltration of contamination. I put a healthy table spoon of clean bearing grease in my left palm, hook the finger of my right hand thru the bearing and force it in. If I see dirt, chips or water come out of the bearing, simply toss it out. It's cooked. Pete -- Original message -- From: Loren Faeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sure, as long as you are very careful not to let any dirt get in the bearings or grease. It is done all the time. I'm convinced 90% of the bearing repacks are charged for but never done. Unless you do it yourself! Then you KNOW it was done, or in this case, not done yet. At 08:28 PM 11/4/2008, you wrote: Gang, Marshall would kill me for even thinking this but here goes. Gotta get the 240D back on the road to buy time for the 190D. To do that I gotta get new front rotors on 'er. I've never done bearings before and while I've got the proper grease on order its not here yet and I'm not sure they'll make it this week which is pretty much my deadline, I need this car for going to work next week. So I could use Mobil 1 as a replacement but the problem is I don't know how much grease to use, did I mention I've never done this before? So I'm wondering can I just carefully pull the outer bearing, slide the hub/rotor off, swap rotors, carefully slide the hub/rotor back on, slip the outer bearing back in and call it good enough for a week? Next week when I've got the grease I'll go back and replace properly but for now... I've had one of the dust caps off and the grease is all green and nice looking. I don't exactly remember the last time I had the bearings done, probably 20,000 miles ago. They'd made noise before that and IIRC he replaced the bearings when he greased them. Anyway I'll send an email to make sure I understand the full replacement process in a sec, just wanted to try an idea. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com Loren Faeth ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 115 300D still won't start
I checked the glow plugs etc and they appeared to be ok - the expansion wire glowed orange too. I had a new set so I put them all in but it did not help at all. I am starting to wonder if I have run it low on fuel. I knew I was getting toward the bottom of that tank given the mileage on the trip odometer etc but was waiting for the low fuel light to come on before refilling. I have about 350 miles on the tank according to the trip odometer. I have gone further than that but only in warmer weather with all highway driving. This tank is while it is cooler and has some urban driving so I may not have much left in th tank. I am wondering now if that light may have malfunctioned. So, before I dig any further, I am going to pick up a 5 gallon can of diesel and pour it into the tank. I might even change out the fuel filter as I have never done that in my 4 summers of driving it. I also got some of the small clear filters but the car did not have one originally and I have never put one in so I cannot crawl under and look for fuel or for crud in the filter either. My initial thought was the glow system as I drove the car on Saturday and it ran like normal. I went to help my brother-in-law do some electrical work and install a roof vent in his new garage. That is about 45 minutes away. I drove out there on Saturday morning and the car sat on the street from 10:30 to about 8:00 PM and then started normally and drove fine for 45 minutes home in the dark. Maybe I am lucky that I made it into the garage. I did not use it at all on Sunday and then Monday morning, it would not start. White smoke from the exhaust indicates there is fuel present. The older Dodges used an electric resistance heater at the air intake as a starting aid. Re: [MBZ] w115 A/C issue figured out, and parts
In 1968, probably too much to ask. Remember, there is no relay for the compressor clutch coil, the current goes through the switch. Very typical of such systems in those days, and up to the mid 70's on German cars (Audi Fox for instance). Works the same was as the temperature and oil pressure gauges, although you have an electric temp gauge. I was hoping it was just air-filled, because I'm pretty sure I can manage to silver-solder a cap on it, since I've done my share of delicate soldering. But charging it with Freon or the like, is not in my skill set. I guess a nice non-fragile easy-to-work-with *thermocouple* would have been too much to ask from Stuttgart... Is that probe *important* to the functioning of the system? Can I ideally just ignore its absence? Nope, it's vital. With no pressure in it you will never get the compressor running. When was the last time you put in fuel? Maybe gelled summer fuel? An incandescent bulb in a trouble light under the hood by the IP overnight might warm it enough to find out. I'm still voting for valves. -Curt Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2008 12:23:19 -0600 From: R A Bennell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I checked the glow plugs etc and they appeared to be ok - the expansion wire glowed orange too. It cranks and it tries to fire and it smokes a cloud out the back but it does not start. Will add some fuel and see if that resolves the problem. It's ok to inflate any tire to it's max, or what is required on the vehicle info plate. When cold. It does no harm if the pressure creeps up 10% or so when the tyre gets hot. Re: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start
No, it wouldn't and I do want to do that in any event. However, I really do doubt that is the reason it won't start right now. It seems to have come on too sudden in my mind. I mainly want to get it running once more to warm the oil and drain it and change the filter You also have to understand that we are about to enter winter here by the sounds of things. We broke a 105 year old record for high temperature on Monday with a plus 19 C but today it is 5 C and we have a winter storm warning with a Colorado low coming in from the Dakotas. Predicted highs for the coming days are all negative numbers. I would have to do this in my unheated garage. I know one is supposed to do the valves with the engine cold, but this could become silly. [MBZ] 84 v 85 190D
I have a 84 190D auto with the original window sticker, it says 35mpg highway. On fueleconomy.gov, they only go back to 85 and for that it says the 85 gets 33 when looking at the original sticker option (not revised figure). So, will a 84 get 2mpg better than a 85? The next two are a manufacturer's code; DB = Daimler Benz. I don't know if OstGermany joined the VIN standardization club, but our Trabant starts with E, but it is a '75. South Africa should start with A. Maybe they're only assembling knocked-down kits there, with enough work done in Germany to warrant a W VIN? Re: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start
Remove the hose from the air cleaner at the intake and aim a LIT propane hand torch into the intake as you crank after glowing. Unburned propane will explode the engine (literally blow the valve cover and oil pan off), but a LIT torch will supply enough extra heat to get it to fire off. Most likely you have a combination of low compression, poopy injectors, and a slow starter -- note that it will NEVER start if the rpm while cranking is less than 100 -- the compression leaks off. Adjust the valves and verify that you have good fuel -- air in the IP will still give you some oil smoke but no fire. Peter On Nov 5, 2008, at 11:43 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: White smoke from the exhaust indicates there is fuel present. The older Dodges used an electric resistance heater at the air intake as a starting aid. With that knowledge, I wonder if using a heat gun at the intake would safely help start a car such as yours. Pete -- Original message -- From: R A Bennell [EMAIL PROTECTED] I checked the glow plugs etc and they appeared to be ok - the expansion wire glowed orange too. It cranks and it tries to fire and it smokes a cloud out the back but it does not start. Will add some fuel and see if that resolves the problem. My recollection is that it may take a fair amount of cranking if there is now some air in the lines. Re: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start
Verify that you do not have leaks in the suction side fuel lines -- a bad line here will fill the IP with foam, and you won't get it started. This happens suddenly, usually. Re: [MBZ] Suburban 454 mileage
Yes. 3/41 ton trucks usually have a ten ply tire. That is a load range E. Max air pressure is 80 psi. Most car tires are four ply with a maximum pressure of 44psi. 80psi would be very scary in a passenger tire, both in handling and risk of explosion due to overpressurization. radio) near the 4 conductor plug.. Is there any good trouble shooting procedures / recommendations? I did not see any thing around the excellent Jim Cathey ACC check list. Is there a way to check out / work on the unit (antenna)? Had I kept at the biz the antenna would no doubt have gotten the same treatment. But it can be diagnosed: the plug to it should have hot, ground, and a signal from the radio. Also a wire or two associated with the dash switch. The car's schematic is invaluable here. But the usual problem is inside the antenna. Mechanical stickage, or fried electronics, or broken belt (86+). The procedure for removing the mast has the antenna extended. Can it be taken apart with it retracted?? Yes, but you usually remove the whole thing from the car, open it up, and peel it apart that way. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I checked the glow plugs etc and they appeared to be ok - the expansion wire glowed orange too. I've never seen the toasters glow. If they are, perhaps the plugs are shorted? Do you get the 1V drop across the two terminals of the glow plug? (Center screw, and collar.) I am wondering now if that light may have malfunctioned. If the feed and return fuel lines ever got switched you can run out of fuel early. Easy to do, they're both right there together near the injection pump.

[MBZ] Help Needed from International List Members
I'm in a real pickle with an engine issue at work, and I can't get any help on this side of the pond. I have a Mitsubishi 1.5L industrial gas(oline) engine that is used on a generator. It is the same basic engine that was used on the 91-95 Mitsubishi Mirages. That being said, there are some mechanical and electrical differences between the distributor on this engine and the automotive application that prevent me from using the automotive application distributor. The distributor has an internal coil which is different from the automotive application distributor. We have pretty well confirmed that the coil has failed, and courtesy of Rusty were able to get one of the automotive distributors to compare to be sure that they are different (we didn't know they were different until we got one to compare - dang it!) So my question is this: If there are any list members that are overseas that would be willing to see if they could source this distributor or parts for it I would be most appreciative. I would add that Mitsubishi has never sold industrial gas engines in the US - this is an import that was brought in by someone - hence the reason why we can't find parts for it here... Re: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start
If it smokes it is getting some fuel. I have seen mufflers plug up where car will not get enough air to run. Also check air filter. For a diesel you need fuel, air, compression, and sequence to start. You are missing one. I have seen diesels flood before where they get so much fuel in the cylinders that they will not generate the heat needed to start. I have disconnected start and hooked up to 24V to get car to start, when you can not pull start them. Note the 24V trick also works if engine sat for long time and rings are stuck, then engine running usually fixes the stuck rings and all is well again. The trick is to put 24V to starter only and not to whole electrical system which will fry things. Trampas -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of R A Bennell Sent: Wednesday, November 05, 2008 1:23 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] 115 300D still won't start I checked the glow plugs etc and they appeared to be ok - the expansion wire glowed orange too. It cranks and it tries to fire and it smokes a cloud out the back but it does not start. Will add some fuel and see if that resolves the problem. My recollection is that it may take a fair amount of cranking if there is now some air in the lines. Re: [MBZ] Help Needed from International List Members
Can you post pictures of the coil? Often the same part is used on different engines and cars. Thus having pictures would help. Also will the new distributor physically fit? If so hook it up with an external coil such that you don't have problem again. I have been meaning to make an ionization current sense ignition system for some time. Basically this is a coil per cylinder which uses the spark plug as a compression sensor. Thus it finds peak compression, aka TDC and then adjust timing accordingly. Thus hook up power, ground and spark plug and it would run regardless of engine. Also using the ionization current you can detect spark knock and have system automatically adjust timing on a per cylinder basis. Again just one more of my dream projects... I'll post some pictures tomorrow. For now you can look up the automotive version on buyasianparts.com using the part number DG22. The coils are different in the means they use for connection. The automotive version has different (and more) connectors. The body casting is identical, but the drive is different between the two.
