Re: [MBZ] F/S Canuck Diesel G-Wagen

2009-01-23 Thread Jeff Zedic
It is VERY easy to get oarts for a HJ or BJ Landcruiser! Just call a
Canadian dealer and deal with them!

I used to have a lot of US customers needing parts. No biggie. The US
dealer network just likes to play dumb and say they don't exist. They
have the same info and can get the parts but seem to be too lazy to do
it.

That was my experience with 13 years at Toyota dealers. I sent cruiser
parts all over the world because I would take the time to do the work.

Some years ago this guy I worked for got hooked up with some other guy who
started a local cable TV channel called Cable Cars that ran only car ads,
For some amount you could put a pic and a short description together they
would show several times a day for a week or whatever. Sorta the Home
Shopping Network for cars. I thought it was an interesting idea, but unless
you were a total couch spud I couldn't see sitting there to find something
of interest. I watched it a couple times for a few minutes, it got pretty
boring, and the used car lot guys were amazingly annoying. They might have
a had a web site too, but that was before web sites got to be a big deal.

I used to go to the Houston dealer that was close by, drive up under the
portico, park there, get out all nasty from doing whatever, and go into
the parts counter to get an odd or end. Brunnhilde looked quite content
sitting there among the new SLs and Ss and the swells. I always
wondered if any of them would be visiting in 30 years.

I had this fantasy of winning the lottery, going there like that,
parking Brunnhilde in front, seeing if I could get a salesperson's
attention, then walking around saying, Gimme this one, and that one,
and that Lambo over there, and that Ferrari too, and maybe a GL diesel
if you have one. I want to order a Maybach and an SLR too. Oh, and
Brunnhilde there needs a going over and a wash and wax too. When can
you have them ready? Thanks.

Internet prices are sometimes cheaper than in-store. If you print out
the Internet ad and take it to the store, they will match the price
and then take %20 off that with the coupon.

I had looked at the transmission jack that Kaleb posted a link to, for
example, and noticed that the page said to print the page and take it to
the store but that there was no way to add to a cart. I'll look again.

[MBZ] OT: Mensa in the News+Donalds Medical Research

2009-01-23 Thread Archer
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, our nation tuned in to see the 44th President
take the oath of office. Jim Werdell, Chairman of Mensa International, was
interviewed by Good Morning America on advice that he would give President
Obama as he takes on the office of President. The non-partisan piece also
featured presidents from a variety of organizations. You can view the clip
at::

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=6702470.

Hi Donald,
Just happened to think: If you were a Mensa member, you could probably put
out the word that you wanted someone to do medico-legal research and you'd
probably find several good medical library researchers in short order.
Mensa has lots of middle-level people like that.

Re: [MBZ] F/S Canuck Diesel G-Wagen

2009-01-23 Thread Kevin
Even in Canada, parts for them are starting to get a little hard to come
by. The 3B and 2H have been out of production for almost 24 years, and
parts for them are starting to get a little on the scarce side.

I keep an interchange list that lists the cross references for everything
in the glove box in case I need something while on the road.

A little later in production, the 12HT and 13BT are also out of production,
and Toyota doesn't seem all that jazzed about continuing to support them.
The real unfortunate thing is the 1HZ and 1HD serieses they'll continue to
support them, but those two are OHC belt driven engines...

It's a fun truck for road trips, for sure, and the way mine is set up now,
an easier drive through rocky trails than a 300GD which is geared a bit too
tall for some of the rocky trails around here. If I had to daily drive it,
though, I'd have a 300GD instead of the cruiser, as 300GD parts are as easy
as a phone call to rusty and have them appear in a couple of days. Not quite
as easy with th BJ-60...

If you could have waited a few days Rusty could have got all that stuff
cheaper. For instance, I know he can get dealer ordered keys for $25,
would have saved $10 right there.

The key IS a dealer item, but Rusty has a deal for such with a certain
dealer. Gve Rusty the VIN; key arrives few days later; other parts from
Rusty often arrive next morning. Call Rusty for new MB items, including
keys. 1-800-741-5252

My goodness, even I know that the M103 for 4-matics had a unique oil pan to
clear the shafts. Hasn't anybody ever actually looked underneath?

Why bother to reegineer two more engines for a low volume application.

..Perhaps Roger can comment as to why he is stuck with only a new C-Class
 every other year...

First, Roger will point out that it's actually every seven years or so, not
every other.

As to people keeping cars in the desert and at home, that's not so unusual.
Why drive the 3000 mile round trip if one can afford otherwise?

For example, my MB sales guy sells two S-Classes every year to a local real
estate mogul, one delivered here in Seattle and the other delivered in Palm
Springs. The owners, elderly now, commute back and forth in their bizjet. BTW,
her trade-in W221, the Seattle car, was the same Barolo Red as my C300.

The owner of Barrier MB in Bellevue WA commutes the 1.1 miles from his Hunt's
Point estate to the store in his Maybach 57 or his Porsche 997 Turbo and
keeps whatever he needs in Palm Springs. He also has a sizable yacht somewhere
around here. He also owns the local Audi, Porsche and Volvo outlets.

And my C300, the eighth MB in 35 years, is the best one of all.

Yeah,
there are thousands of winter cars down here which are stored over the
summer months. Most of them though are clapped out 107's or 129's that
spend most of the winter months at the dealership trying to get them
to run after 6 months of storage.

Why bother to reegineer two more engines for a low volume application.

Re: [MBZ] How often?

2009-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond
We used to deliver a Cadillac CTS to Palm Beach, Florida every year for an old
lady my wife knew. It cost with airfare for 2 and 2 nights in hotel, food and
fuel ~ $1000 less for us to drive it down than to have it delivered.
Considerably less than an extra car would.

She finally moved down there to stay, too bad I liked those trips. Although we
did have one knock down drag out fight on every trip...

..Perhaps Roger can comment as to why he is stuck with only a new C-Class
 every other year...

As for the hose, I must admit I only checked a couple of sites on-line and

Holiday Exercise Program

I tried it, I liked it, you will too!

The older we get the more important it is to incorporate exercise into
our
daily routine. This is necessary to maintain cardiovascular health and
maintain muscle mass.

If you're over 40, you might t want to take it easy at first, then do
more
repetitions as you become more proficient and build stamina. Warning:
It may
be too strenuous for some.

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program!

SCROLL DOWN.

That's enough for the first day.

Great job.

[MBZ] charging question

2009-01-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
OK, stupid me, here we go again. When charging a battery with a battery
charger, if you have it set on say, 20 amps, and its showing more than
that, like 38 amps for example, what does that mean? It should usually
show less than what its set at, and go down as the battery charges, correct?

I see (said the blind man as he was reading the paper to his deaf son),
so this is why I get ignored at the house of expensive automobiles. I
don't have the MB bag in my hand. Perhaps next time I'll wear my MB hat,
buy some bits and pieces, make sure I get a shiny bag and then head out
into the showroom with said bag in one hand and jiggle my MB keys in the
other. Perhaps I need to get meself an MB shirt as well, as I don't
think my grubby overalls sort of fit into the shiny and clean showroom.
Seriously though, I generally don't look at new Benzes as I am mostly
disappointed.

Yes, it should usually show the same or less than what it's set at. And,
yes, the current should go down as the battery charges.

If the charger is showing more current than its setting, it means that the
current limit isn't very good and that the battery is rather flat. It
could also mean that one of the cells is shorted.

Re: [MBZ] charging question

2009-01-23 Thread Mitch Haley
Like Craig implied, if it can pump 20A at 13-14v, it can pump more amps at a
lower voltage. If 38A for five minutes won't get you up to at least 12.0v,
you've probably got a pretty good short in the battery, or you've got the cables
hooked up backwards. Disconnect charger if anything gets hot or battery starts
hissing. My old 6A charger pops a thermal overload protector after a couple of
minutes at 8A.

Re: [MBZ] Stealership prices and how to get the attention of the yuppie car salesperson

2009-01-23 Thread E M
We have a few great dealers in town here. Whenever there, I always have a
look around, not at the cars I might buy used one day, but the ones I could
probably never afford new, or even used. I love mechanical things, so the
more bits and pieces a car has, the better to me. At our dealer, they
always have an SLR and a Maybach on the floor. Neither car will ever live
in my garage, but I'm glad there are companies like Mercedes building these
cars, just as I'm glad there's a RR, an Enzo, and a Carrera GT. The SLR can
be looked at as silly in ways, as you can have a SL 65 for a third the
price, with similar enough performance figures, but that's not the point of
the SLR. These cars are kind of future time capsules, of what we can do
automotively at the moment, much like what a RUF CTR was in the late 80s, or
a Ferrari F40 was.

As for the stuff I an interested in buying 5-10 years down the road, I will
stop and have a look at that. Currently, I've been looking at a few used E
Classes, having given up after no luck on finding a nice old W126. I'm not
even sure the model number of what I'm looking at, W201 I think? Whenever
in the dealer, I always stop and have a look at the current S550. I'm not
in the market for one now, but by the time the next car needs replacing, in
about 7-8 years, the S550 is sure on my list. :-) I'm trying to think 10
years down the road too, and what my backside will appreciate at that time.
I'm sure seat heaters and massage will be appreciated much more than they
are today. lol. Based on surrent quality control reports, I think the
current S Class cars are going to make fine used cars down the road.

Ok, if I want to be silly, a 5.5 AMG G Wagon would be fun too. It does snow
here 6 months out of the year. It's like a Hummer that went to charm
school, kinda. lol

Ok, enough rambling, dinner is ready here.

I see (said the blind man as he was reading the paper to his deaf son), so
this is why I get ignored at the house of expensive automobiles. I don't
have the MB bag in my hand. Perhaps next time I'll wear my MB hat, buy some
bits and pieces, make sure I get a shiny bag and then head out into the
showroom with said bag in one hand and jiggle my MB keys in the other.
Perhaps I need to get meself an MB shirt as well, as I don't think my grubby
overalls sort of fit into the shiny and clean showroom.
Seriously though, I generally don't look at new Benzes as I am mostly

Actually, having spent an hour or so today diagnosing my 140's HVAC, I
have to say it is a real delight compared to the Type III in my olde
300D. You just push a couple of buttons to enter diagnostic mode, and
it tells you the values for every sensor, module, and whatnot in the
system. All seven (or more) temperature sensor values, refrigerant
pressure, blower motor voltage, and so on. Then the manual tells you
where everything is, what the values should be, and how to test it, so
diagnosis is just a matter of knowing how to use a multimeter.

This compared with chasing vacuum leaks all over creation. The only
downside is that you can't fix a 140 with a golf tee. And later 140s
have a much simpler ACC interface.

It looks like I've got a bad blower motor regulator. This seems to be a
common problem; note that the eBay car has a brand new one.

diagnosis is just a matter of knowing how to use a multimeter.

I think it works pretty much the same, but it looks like the early ones
give less information. There's a nice writeup for the early system at

Re: [MBZ] charging question

2009-01-23 Thread Jim Cathey
I think this battery may be a gonner. It also only gets up to about 11
volts showing while charging.

Yup. The non-regulated chargers' 'current' settings are just
voltage settings, which will put out the advertised amount of
current into a discharged (but good) battery. If the battery
is shorted, they'll often put out more. To the detriment of
the battery, and possibly the charger.

You've got a shorted cell. 2V each, it should have been charging
at 13-15 volts.

If you charged it for 1/2 hour at 38 amps, that's 19 amp hours.
Let it sit disconnected overnight and see what the voltage is in the morning.
If it's 10-11v, you've almost assuredly got one dead short cell.

NOW SCROLL BACK UP.

That's enough for the first day.

Great job.

And a very Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2009
