they'd already killed the XJ (Cherokee) by the time the Libby came out;
people are still wondering who asked for it, and exactly what void it
was supposed to fill as it doesn't seem to have been able to do
*anything* well.

The Liberty (which is the Cherokee elsewhere in the world) is a close second.
With very little feedback to the driver its amazingly easy to get stuck since
you have nearly no idea what the wheels are doing. The body panels also have
amazing sound transmitting properites which can make you think every stick you
drive over is poking holes in the oil pan. Oh and the back seat is apparently
plywood covered with nails... This is the old model, I have yet to ride in the
new Dodge Nitro (snicker) based model.

I also have to mention the Patriot and Compass (which are apparently both based on the (snicker!) Dodge Caliber) what idiot thought Jeep needed a car in its lineup?

Of course if they sold well I suppose they'd be worth it, I'd love to know the

which one are you talking about? that article addressed several
different vehicles and there are pictures of more in the gallery.
if you're talking about the Lower Forty, it's a case of Form
following Function; almost exactly as it should be for a serious vehicle
for the unpaved.
if you're talking about the Overland, what's not to like? a rolling
campsite that can go most anywhere?!

as fr concept vehicles that they really should have done, there's
the next-gen Jeepster, as well as the Dakar and the Casablanca,... the
Gladiator was just sort of a spin-off of what AEV had been doing for a
while already when they were making a Comanche-like spin-off from the
XJ, and like the Brute they make now out of the Wrangler.

None of us know the inner workings of GM or any other company - we just
listen to the talking heads on CNN FOX believe what they tell us.

I remember when the talking heads stated that Chrysler was dead in the
early 80s, then Chrysler pulled out thrived for more than 20 years!

GM is far from dead. GM is trying to survive and they will probably make it.

The one to watch is Ford. They were lucky enough to have more cash on hand
when things went south but it's catching up with them fast. It's likely that
GM and Chrysler will restructure leave Ford behind.

Re: [MBZ] blasting

2009-05-06 Thread LWB250

We have a media blasting cabinet here at work. We use a number of different
types of media, mainly based on the piece we're trying to clean. There are all
kinds of media, things like nut shells, plastic beads, etc., etc. I'm not sure
what's in it right now, but I was using it to clean a cast iron piece for a
Walker-Turner belt/disc sander I restored and it took 3 layers of 30+ year old
paint off in record time.

Our cabinet has a filter system in it too, so the crap that gets blasted off
doesn't mix with the media, which is nice. You don't want old lead-based paint
flying around...

The term is media blasting, not bead blasting. Media
 blasting removes
everything down to the metal and does not etch the surface
 as sand blasting can
do. In fact there are several types of media used depending
 on what is being
cleaned. As one example, a form of baking soda is used to
 remove the paint
on aircraft followed by a washdown with water which gets
 the media out of the
 crevices.

You cannot at home equal the result a commercial outfit can
 do. My friend
SJB had the body of his 356A Porsce Speedster media blasted
 before it went to
the metal shop for the major metal work and the blasting
 removed all the
 corrosion and old bondo.

No, your pressure washer won't do anything but remove dirt
 and grease but
leave behind the rust. And I have hundreds of hours on my
 Karcher 1750 to
 prove it.

Just pay to have it done right and you will have the best

Re: [MBZ] OM 617 vacuum pump rebuild howto

2009-05-06 Thread Rich Thomas

http://www.constructivity.net/rebuilding_the_vacuum_pump.htm

If you are just doing the diaphragm you can do that without taking the
whole thing off (which is more involved). You need to get the whole
area REALLY CLEAN, like spray the whole area down with degreaser then
take a brush and high-pressure hose to it and clean all around. Take
off the fan and shroud (loosen the belts) (maybe do this before cleaning
if you can do it at home, otherwise go to the quarter car wash and spray
it all good then take that stuff off back home). Take off the hose
fittings, then take off the screws that hold the diaphragm cover on.
These are machine screws with slotted heads, 7 or 8, a bit fiddly but
with a short bit in some kind of holder like a little ratchet (or power
driver), where you can get some torque you can get them all off and then
just slide the cover off. One or 2 are hard to see but they are there.
The diaphragm is held on now buy the center bolt, an allen screw, with
little round metal disks front and back. It helps if you rotate the
engine enough so that the diaphragm is flat. Pay attention to how they
are together and oriented. The little check valves are in the cover
with the 2 acrews, they get goobered if any oil has leaked. You might
be able to clean them, or just replace them, pay attention to orientation.

Put it back together with the blue loctite on the allen screw that holds
the diaphragm on, then button it all up. A magnetic screw bit helps the
screws to get in the right places. Clean out the hoses to make sure
there is no oil goobering them up.

I did this the other day, have to do it again as the diaphragm looked
good and I put it back, but is still not sucking, so gotta replace it.
The screw was loose so it was not diaphragmming.

Re: [MBZ] blasting

2009-05-06 Thread R A Bennell
Not that you necessarily want to do this, but the pressure washer can remove
paint etc. You need one of the ones
that can shoot sand with the water. A bit of a dangerous tool in the wrong
hands. Probably best for removal of
graffiti from brick etc.

...What's the deal on bead blasting? Should I try this at home? How is
this better than using my Home Despot power washer?..

The term is media blasting, not bead blasting. Media blasting removes
everything down to the metal and does not etch the surface as sand blasting can
do. In fact there are several types of media used depending on what is being
cleaned. As one example, a form of baking soda is used to remove the paint
on aircraft followed by a washdown with water which gets the media out of the
crevices.

You cannot at home equal the result a commercial outfit can do. My friend
SJB had the body of his 356A Porsce Speedster media blasted before it went to
the metal shop for the major metal work and the blasting removed all the
corrosion and old bondo.

No, your pressure washer won't do anything but remove dirt and grease but
leave behind the rust. And I have hundreds of hours on my Karcher 1750 to
prove it.

Just pay to have it done right and you will have the best result.

Re: [MBZ] slipping tranny 1980 300D

2009-05-06 Thread Joe Sasser
I've purchased 2 transmissions from Sun Valley Mercedes out of CA. One
for the '83 300SD we bought from Caleb about 6 years ago or so, and
another 2 years ago for my wife's '88 190D.

So far no problems with either, and the install on the 190 was botched
a bit (original installer wasn't available), and it's still shifting
hard from 2nd into 3rd.

If I'd known Rusty did trannys, I'd have gone with him. But hey,
Rusty: I may end up needing one for the w115 300D I got from Caleb, if
the donor Benz's tranny acts up.

BTW, on a recent trip to OKC from here (Beaumont, TX), it only cost
$40, and that got me within 30 miles of the house! Just wish those
greedy bastards would put the cost of diesel around 85¢ where it
belongssigh.

Re: [MBZ] GM

2009-05-06 Thread Tom Hargrave
Gary,

So, you think the Germans, Japanese and Koreans are better? Obviously, you
don't remember history.

The first Toyota cars were so dismal that they could not give then away in
this country. The only Toyota that would sell in this country for years was
the Land Cruiser.

The first Honda cars were death traps - they were so bad in the early 70s
that our Government forced them to stop selling until they got their act
together.

Then there were the mid-late Toyotas that would impale you on the steering
column if you were unfortunate enough to be the driver of the car and had an
accident without your seatbelt on. BTW, this problem was solved by GM in the
60s and GM thought the design improvement was so important that they gave it
to the auto industry. The design was the collapsible steering column. All of
the American auto makers adopted the design, Toyota did not. BTW, Mercedes
did adopt their version of the design.

Let's not forget Mercedes with their single roller timing chain engine that
would fail in less than 100,000 miles - this was the 380 released in the
late 80s. The 280 engine that would leak oil profusely from under the cam
carrier maybe replacing the gaskets would work, maybe not. You also had
the W107 sub-frame cracking issue, the late 60s diesel issue, the list goes
on on.

Oh, and the more recent Mercedes 320 engine that would sludge up die if
you used Dino oil even though Dino oil was approved by Mercedes. Mercedes
refused to fix this one until they lost a class action lawsuit.

I'm not saying there aren't issues with the big three. But if you believe
that the Japanese, German, Italian or Korean auto makers don't mock the
American public, you are wrong. Their crap is no better than ours.

GM is far from dead. GM is trying to survive and they will probably make

The chain issue is wear, right?
How easy is it to check the cam timing?

Heck, most engines these days have both cam position sensors and crank position
sensors. (firing the plugs off the crank sensor but knowing which cycle to fire
on by the cam sensor) Seems like if the sensors are reasonably accurate, you
could have the computer set off the SES light with a code for timing chain wore

Gary's too busy complaining about his 2.2L Saturn that hasn't tossed it's

BTW, I thought about buying a 2003 Alero last month. 2.2L with the timing
chain oil feed issue, 5sp, 4dr, white, 70k. Very few 4dr Oldsmobiles with
the 5sp were made, and virtually all of them have 100k on the odometer by
now. They fixed the timing chain problem in 2004 model year.

Probably should have bought that $1800 190e that looked like it had
Sportline seats, it was a better buy than a $4k Alero would be.

Here's what the 2003 TSB said:
Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to communicate updated service procedures to the
timing chain and timing chain oiling nozzle due to design changes that have been
made to both components. All timing chain kits now available in service will
include the oiler nozzle. This new nozzle has higher flow rate characteristics
that will increase oil flow to the timing chain under low RPM operating
conditions. Whenever replacing a timing chain, it is important to replace the
oiler nozzle.

http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112711

So it sounds like you don't have adequate oil pressure at idle to properly oil
the chain with the original smaller nozzle, and it's the people who sit at
stoplights or drive like grandmothers who have the problem?

The late 1980's Festiva was made by Kia, noisy, powerful for its weight, and

I'd still like to get my hands on a broken chain and measure the length under
tension at some point far from the break. I bet they're worn from lack of lube
and show over 4% elongation. I just don't know how easy it is to get at a long

[MBZ] Brakes

2009-05-06 Thread E M
Just wanted to say, I got back from my local indie parts shop. Small place
I've used when not buying factory original, which I buy 90% of the time.
Anyway, thought I'd try some after market brakes, so had my guy order up new
rotors for the front, along with pads and sensors. $168 Canadian, with
taxes. At current exchange rates, I think that's equal to a couple of
McDonald Happy Meals in the US. lol

Who says driving a benz has to be expensive. ;-) So far, this car has been
pretty cheap motoring. New tires later in the week, about $450 out the door
for Uniroyals. I'm really starting to appreciate the running costs of this
car!!

[MBZ] More from Chrysler

2009-05-06 Thread Tom Hargrave
Dear Employees,

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved a process for the expeditious sale of
substantially all of Chrysler LLC’s assets. This is a major step forward as
it sets out a swift, clear path to achieve our goal of concluding our
alliance with Fiat S.p.A. and create a new company that will be stronger and
more competitive.

It is crucial that this transaction be completed in a timely manner in order
to secure maximum value for our stakeholders and to preserve key
relationships with suppliers, dealers and other business partners. In
addition, financial commitments from the U.S. and Canadian governments
require the alliance with Fiat be consummated within 60 days of Chapter 11
filing on April 30. Our new labor agreements with the UAW and CAW also
depend on prompt completion of the proposed Fiat alliance.

As we’ve said many times before, our leadership left no stone unturned as we
aggressively pursued a strategy of alliances and partnerships with other
OEMs and suppliers around the world. Out of respect for the negotiating
process and confidentiality requirements, we have not commented in the past
on partnership talks that have not resulted in deals. However, as part of
the Bankruptcy Court process, we disclosed that we have previously discussed
various transactions with Nissan, General Motors, Volkswagen, Tata Motors,
Magna, GAZ, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota and others over an extended period of
time. These discussions did not produce any viable alternative to the
proposed alliance with Fiat.

It’s clear that the Fiat deal represents the best opportunity for us. The
court today established a fair and orderly process to confirm that the Fiat
transaction represents the best and highest bid for Chrysler’s assets, or
promptly identify any other higher and better alternatives. An alternative
bidder would have to surpass the value of the terms of the agreement with
Fiat to be successful.

Going forward, important court dates for us are:

•May 20, the deadline for submission of alternative bids
•May 26, the deadline for the notice of designation of lead bidder
•May 27, the date for the sale hearing to consider the approval of
the proposed sale

It’s important to remember that during this transition time, our dealers
still have great products to offer. Our quality has never been better, as
shown by our 29 percent reduction in warranty claims over the last year. For
the 2009 model year, we improved the fuel economy on 73 percent of our
products.

Our dealers not only met their concession goals, but also have continued to
show tremendous enthusiasm for our company, our brands and our products in
their local communities. To assist our dealers and attract consumers, we are
introducing new incentives beginning today. We’re offering as much as $4,000
consumer cash on 2009 model vehicles; a $1,000 owner loyalty incentive for
current Chrysler LLC vehicle owners that is good towards most 2008 and 2009
vehicles; and as much as $1,000 credit union bonus cash for qualified
members who finance their new vehicle purchase through one of 1,500
participating credit unions. These incentives are valid through June 1, and
they make it a great time to shop for a new Chrysler, Jeep® or Dodge.

Acclaim for our new products keeps rolling in. For example, the all-new 2009
Dodge Ram 1500 came out on top in a head-to-head competition against the
Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra conducted by Edmunds.com.
Edmunds praised the Ram’s 5.7-liter V-8 engine, towing ability, axle ratio,
fuel efficiency and the RamBox™ cargo storage system. The publication also
raved about interior features such as the heated and vented seats, the
navigation system and rear-seat DVD.

We realize that thousands of pages of documents have been filed with the
court. As media members scrutinize these documents that are now public,
you’ll undoubtedly continue to hear and read stories about our business. I
want to remind you to go to HYPERLINK http://scoop.chrysler.comThe Scoop
or to HYPERLINK
http://www.chryslerrestructuring.comwww.chryslerrestructuring.com to get
the details on all motions and documents that have been filed in court.

Once more, thank you for your sacrifices, which have helped lay the
groundwork for the swift completion of this process that will enable us to
emerge as a vibrant company with bright, long-term prospects.

Bob

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

Re: [MBZ] Better buy 'em now boys

2009-05-06 Thread Bill R
I liked my Focus very much. When I was told I'd be getting a new car the
supervisor told me I'd be getting a Fiesta. I was a bit concerned, despite
his assurance it was a good car, until I discovered it was really a Focus.
The early ones [mine was first US model year] had too many recalls [5 while
I had it], but I did have 54 beautiful trouble free miles before it broke
down the first time. That was the only time it stranded me, though. 7-8
hours a day in it was not a problem.

Thats probably a Focus, the Fiesta isn't out here, I don't think they've
made one since the '80s. The one in the '80s was a piece of crap but it was
IIRC really really cheap so that balances..

Yeah, Ford. Its not out yet here but the buzz is impressive. Its a small
car, European design that they've used overseas for awhile. 118hp, ~40mpg,
~$12k, looks good and is purported to be a real drivers car.
Of course I'll have to drive one to be sure but I'm interested thus far.

I had a ride to a motel in what I think was a Fiesta several years ago.  It
went like the devil and didn't ride bad for a small car.

One of my brothers owned three of them. He kept them maintained for many
years and many miles. He only stopped driving the cars when he could no
longer find parts in the junkyard.

All three were pulled off the road for items you could find for just about
any other car on the road. Stupid stuff like the front strut failed on one
and there were none available.

[MBZ] 300E issues

2009-05-06 Thread Wonko the Sane
The 300E died while the wife was driving it today. Fortunately, she was only
two blocks from the house and friends pushed her home.

I arrived home from work this afternoon to find the hood up and a battery
charger slapped on -- charging. Brother in law, Jeff (who is a real
mechanic, unlike me, who is a shade tree mechanic) told Debbie to tell me it
was either an alternator or a fuse.

Is there any such fuse on a 300E?

Second question. BuyMBParts web site shows two alternators, a 60 amp and an
80 amp. Difference is based on engine range. Where do I get this engine
range info? Is it by VIN, by year, or a plate somewhere on the engine?

[MBZ] Nissens radiators?

a used one searching car=part.com which may or may not be OE for around
150-170 plus whatever shipping, so probably 20-30 more for shipping.
Or, I can spend 220 for a new nissens from Rusty. Im almost leaning

Go one step further check the commutator rings for pitting. If they are

A very long time ago, one if the pieces of avionics equipment I had to
maintain and repair (and I can't remember exactly what it was or what it
did) at CGAS Cape Cod had brushes and commutator ring. I still have one of
the white, square, somewhat-like-sandstone tools that I used to clean and
polish the commutator. I've had no use for it for decades but kept it in my
toolbox. Just checked -- it is still there, with the business end ground
down to a nice curve. Still about 3 long, so lots of life left on it.

[MBZ] How's your diesel taxed?

2009-05-06 Thread Euan

Colleagues in Alms

The NZ government is reviewing the way taxes are levied on diesel sales.
And not before time.

We have a hugely cumbersome system called Road User Charges (RUC)
designed to apportion the cost of maintaining roads fairly among mobile
diesel users. Owners of stationary diesel plant don't have to pay the tax.

Unlike petrol users who pay their tax at the pump, we diesel users have
to buy their tax separately, usually at the end of long queues at post
offices. We are levied in advance on distance travelled and the fully
laden weight of our vehicles. As you can imagine, multi-axle trucks pay
big money because they do more damage to our roads.

My 300TD is in the 3-tonne class. For 3107 miles (5000 km), I pay
$NZ190. Believe it or not, that includes a bloody service fee of $10. A
fee to pay to a tax?!!

Once I calculate the tax paid per mile travelled, the pump-price
differential between petrol and diesel ** closes very significantly. If,
as it does sometimes, the differential vanishes altogether, the only
economic benefit of running a diesel becomes the longer distances
travelled per litre.

So, how are diesel taxes levied in your neck of the wood?

Per-gallon pump tax here in the US of A. There are additional
annual weight fees for pickup trucks and larger, at least in

Re: [MBZ] How's your diesel taxed?

2009-05-06 Thread Rich Thomas
Ours will probably be worse than yours once Obama gets some ideas from
the more advanced socialist nations, but in the meantime the fuel is
taxed per gallon by the Feds and the states at whatever usurious rate
they decide to set. You fill your tank, pay whatever $/gal and some
amount of that is tax. We'll probably have to buy the tax stamps at the
vehicle registry, or maybe the universal health care office instead of
the post office, just to increase the agony. The taxman don't like the
veggie oil crowd cause they pay no taxes on whatever they brew or pour
in their tanks. Enough of a fringe element now that they are sorta
under the radar but they better watch out.

The current controversy is how to tax the environmentally-pure (or
displaced-emissions) electrics and hybrids since they don't pay fuel tax
(which is supposed to go into highway funds, yeah right). Taxes on them
ought to push them even further out of the economic balance, but there
will probably be offsets/tax credits (money taken from the wealthy
more of their fair share) to make them look better and to force them
upon a public that by and large does not want them. I will leave the
irony analysis on all that up to the reader.

Re: [MBZ] How's your diesel taxed?

2009-05-06 Thread Loren Faeth
Here in Iowa, we pay about 48 cents per US gallon (128 fl. oz. vs 160
fl. oz. for a imperial gallon) for Diesel road use taxes. However, a
lot of this gets diverted into the general fund, and a lot of federal
bucks are used to bribe states into complying with stupidity, like
the old national 55 mph speed limit. (jimmaye cahtah's
brain*art). We also pay a registration fee per vehicle. It is
based on some formula of weight and list price and year. So a new
big car costs hundreds of bucks each year, and old, light cars cost
less. Back in the 70s, a 190Dc was down to $13.50 a
year. Currently, I have a 124 that is down to $32.50 a year, and
another that is $45. The only difference? The expensive one, I have
owned longer! (so it should be cheaper) This year, in the gummits
never ending quest to reach deeper into our pockets, and not being
satisfied with an approximately 50% combined tax burden, the state
raised the minimum fee to $50 a year.

The last I knew, Wisconsin had an Antique license plate that you paid
$25 once, and you could drive it anywhere, any time for as long as
you owned the car.. While I was buying license plate stickers a
couple of weeks ago, the county treasurer's office politely told me
that Iowa now has an antique car license $25 a year and you can
only drive directly to and from shows or educational events.

I have been around the state snoopers long enough to know they will
be laying for you if you have the gall to stop at a drive in for a
sandwich, or even a gas station on the way to or from the show. No
thanks! It is safer to pay the 45 bucks and not get a $150 ticket
from an overzealous snooper. I plan to license the 240D in WI this
summer. and will move any 124 diesels I own up there in 2012.

Michigan is sort of in between. The historic vehicle plate (25 years, so my
300SD qualifies but my 2.3-16 and 190 turbo do not) allows you to go to the
show, but it also allows you to go out cruising on Saturday night, or take the
Mrs out for an anniversary dinner. The gray area is wide enough that pretty much
anything short of driving to work daily would probably be OK.

Here in the USA, each state (political sub-entity in the
country) does it differently. And heavy trucks pay more. I
believe every state has some added at the pump. This is all us
light-duty users need to pay. The big trucks are different. Some
states make them pay based on miles already driven in the state.
Others is anticipated miles in the state. Some its calculated
some other way. Some states have joined together for the sake of
fuel tax collection. And it can change from year to year. My
data is really 10 years old - 'cause it's been that long since
such info matter to my daily existence.

I've been to both countries and Mexico is definitely more civilized than
Italy. Actually, Italy is the poorest, most dismal country I've been to in
Europe. I've not been to Spain but I hear its worse.

I'm talking about the real country, not the propped up tourist traps we
THINK these countries are all about. Stay in the tourist areas and you leave
with a very grand view of Italy, Mexico, Jamaica, etc, etc. Go too far away
without some local help and you might find yourself dead over an American
$20.00 bill. We Americans have a very twisted view of the world!

BTW, if you can bribe someone in a poor country for protection then someone
else can pay him $20.00 more than you are offering to turn against you.

 Subject: [MBZ] Nissens radiators?

OK, are these any good? Rusty? Need a radiator for my E300. I can buy
a used one searching car=part.com which may or may not be OE for around
150-170 plus whatever shipping, so probably 20-30 more for shipping.
Or, I can spend 220 for a new nissens from Rusty. Im almost leaning
toward the new one but wondered if those were any good.

Re: [MBZ] 300E issues

2009-05-06 Thread Gary Hurst
your engine number is on a plate, but it can also generally be looked up via
your vin.

also, you can often guess which one you need. for example, if your car is
an 86, it's pretty likely you need an early one.

an argument can also be made that you can mount any alternator you please if
you take the trouble to rig it up. for example, my 280CE has a 100AMP
alternator off of a top of the line chevy cavalier. PO had a big radio put
in and needed the electricity. works just fine.

mechanic, unlike me, who is a shade tree mechanic) told Debbie to tell me
 it
was either an alternator or a fuse.

Is there any such fuse on a 300E?

Second question. BuyMBParts web site shows two alternators, a 60 amp and an
80 amp. Difference is based on engine range. Where do I get this engine
range info? Is it by VIN, by year, or a plate somewhere on the engine?

Re: [MBZ] How's your diesel taxed?

I forgot to add that off-road Diesel for tractors, crawlers,
stationary engines, bonfires, etc. has no road taxes, if you can find
a place to buy it tax free when you need it.

I once rented a small John Deere tractor with a front-loader and yard
box for some landscaping work. While trailering it back to the rental
shop, I stopped to fuel it up. I was in a fairly rural area and they
did have an off-road pump which I used, but when I went in to pay they
asked me for my tax number which I did not have and so they charged me
the tax anyway.

My pointing out that the tractor was clearly an off road vehicle and in
fact was sitting on a trailer had no impact.

The NZ government is reviewing the way taxes are levied on diesel
 sales. And not before time.

We have a hugely cumbersome system called Road User Charges (RUC)
designed to apportion the cost of maintaining roads fairly among
mobile diesel users. Owners of stationary diesel plant don't have to
 pay the tax.

Unlike petrol users who pay their tax at the pump, we diesel users
have to buy their tax separately, usually at the end of long queues
at post offices. We are levied in advance on distance travelled and
the fully laden weight of our vehicles. As you can imagine,
multi-axle trucks pay big money because they do more damage to our
 roads.

My 300TD is in the 3-tonne class. For 3107 miles (5000 km), I pay
$NZ190. Believe it or not, that includes a bloody service fee of
$10. A fee to pay to a tax?!!

Once I calculate the tax paid per mile travelled, the pump-price
differential between petrol and diesel ** closes very
significantly. If, as it does sometimes, the differential vanishes
altogether, the only economic benefit of running a diesel becomes
the longer distances travelled per litre.

So, how are diesel taxes levied in your neck of the wood?
