To really fix a MB slide rail you need to take the seat out and
disassemble the rails, clean them and put some grease in there.

In other words, there are TWO front-to-back seat adjustments on a W123
driver's seat: one in the front, corresponding to that on the passenger
side, and one on the side. The one on the side, because the way its
tracks are inclined, affects the height of the seat more than the one in
the front does.

And I don't think personal abuse is tolerated anywhere on chat lists,
Kaleb has been pretty patient with Mr Hurst and I would have kicked him

In order to participate on public forums you need a degree of decorum

Sorry, my vote is to ban Mr Hurst, some of the things he said to people

Its a shame if someone took conversations too far, but to ban someone from

I have a really nice single blade folding pocket knife, hand made in
Hungary in the late 90's. Absolutely a work of art; brass, hardwood
handle, highly polished blade. Wicked sharp. It stays on the shelf at
home, while I carry a tiny swiss army model with scissors, phillips and
flat screw driver. Swiss army is boring, mass produced, but gets many
jobs done. The Hungarian knife would be very hard to replace, so it
rarely gets used.

I normally carry one of the small Swiss Army knives, I prefer a Wenger to
Victorinox, I think they stay sharper a bit longer (both are technically "Swiss
Army" knives even though the Wenger is German.) I like the Swiss because of the
scissors. They don't stay sharp good though. I finally got a ceramic sharpener
thats super easy to use. About once a week I give it a couple quick swipes and
we're good.

For Christmas my wife got me a Browning model 561 which is a single blade
folder I'm quite pleased with. Its got a removable belt thing, is lockblade
(why oh why aren't Swiss knives lock blade?) and has tabs to be one hand
opening. Its finished in a dull gray which is quite pleasing.

I've also got a Buck Metro LED which is a really nice blade in a slightly
annoying body. Super sharp and easy to keep sharp too. That knife lives in my
snowmobile coat, its easy to handle with gloves on.

[MBZ] Back home

2010-01-29 Thread Curt Raymond
Came home yesterday, slept for 12 hours, it felt so good to be in my own bed.

Stopped at the pharmacy on the way home, I'm on a surprisingly small number of
drugs all things considered, I already was on a blood pressure med (HCTZ for
those playing at home, only 25mg) to which we add a cholesterol med (Ziocor)
and a blood thinner (I forget the name, like Plavix but newer) and nitro just
in case I have pains again.

The blood thinner is apparently quite an expensive drug but for reasons I don't
really understand the first year is free. After the first year I'm going to be
in a study testing how long folks should be on blood thinners after stents are
put in and again the drug (or placebo) will be free.

The pharmacy tech is a nursing student and was AMAZED when I told her I'd had
heart surgery yesterday.  "You must have been in the hospital a week!" It blew
her mind (still impresses me too) that I went in on Wednesday and walked out on
Thursday... To my wife's irritation I walked from the hospital to the parking
lot across the street.

My boss asked me yesterday if I feel better, the answer is no but then again I
didn't feel bad before. Maybe after I catch up on my sleep I'll know more.

Next up on the home surgery network...

I question big healthcare all the time and I'm certainly no friend of big
pharma. That said I had bad blockages in 2 arteries, I saw them with my own
eyes and I saw the blockages go away after the stents were put in.
They would have stopped if I'd wanted them to and I could have come home
yesterday but if I had I'd probably die within 5 years.

Death is inevitable and I realize that none of us get out of here alive but at
33 I'm willing to try to put it off for a little while anyway.

For $5 the miniCrock sticks are tough to beat.
http://www.lanskysharpeners.com/LCKEY.php

The trick is to keep the knife straight up and down... They won't put an edge
on something thats totally dull but will renew something thats just off of
sharp. Mine have a lot of miles on them and work great.

Now that I think of it getting the tip sharp can be a challenge. The way knives
bounce around in my pocket the tips go dull long before the rest of the knife.
I've had to use a whetstone to put an edge on the tip (easy) and then sharpen
the rest of the knife with the sticks.

I threatened to sign my self out AMA, they released me and I drove my motorhome

No real reason for you to 'feel better'. As I understand it, all you had was
mild angina, WHICH SHOULD GO AWAY.

I've used Plavik for as long as it's been out. It's a little spendy at
$400+/month. It dramatically reduces the viscosity of your blood. Very small
nicks will bleed for a long time.

The state has excess property auctions every week that are published online.
One of the regular lots are piles of knives they take from people entering

then sell the lot.

Just for grins I threw out a bid of $31 for a lot of Victorinox Swiss Army
knives, about 60 of them of various types and sizes.

I won.

I now have a big ZipLoc bag of Victorinox knives. I handed a bunch of them out

I have a really nice single blade folding pocket knife, hand made in
Hungary in the late 90's. Absolutely a work of art; brass, hardwood
handle, highly polished blade. Wicked sharp. It stays on the shelf at
home, while I carry a tiny swiss army model with scissors, phillips and
flat screw driver. Swiss army is boring, mass produced, but gets many
jobs done. The Hungarian knife would be very hard to replace, so it
rarely gets used.

One would assume that Gary will get the message and that this will only be a
short term thing.

I do think the message that caused this was too much of a personal attack. If
you want to do that, send the message

just makes one look bad.

Kaleb, are you referring to the BANNED list? Is that the list the Gary had
outbursts on? The list the "eats its young". The list which you yourself
warn possible subscribers "if you can't take the heat, get out of the
kitchen"? The list where it has been known for years already that nothing
should be taken seriously? The list where people frequently mention the use
of their delete key when they see something they don't like, and just move
on?

Its a shame if someone took conversations too far, but to ban someone from
all lists for something they said on an "anything goes" forum seems quite a
stretch.

I propose you are abusing your power as list owner. I don't agree with your
decision.

Then turns around and tries to be the worlds best car parts salesman.
And I don't think personal abuse is tolerated anywhere on chat lists,
Kaleb has been pretty patient with Mr Hurst and I would have kicked him

In order to participate on public forums you need a degree of decorum and
some people don't have it.
Sorry, my vote is to ban Mr Hurst, some of the things he said to people

I'd love to have a short machete type knife. A friend picked one up at a garage
sale for a couple of dollars that
is really solid. We did a group bbq at a park and he was using it to split
small wood for the fire. Worked better
than a hatchet. I believe the blade was somewhere between a foot and 18 inches
long and the back of the blade was
somewhere in the 1/8 to 1/4 inch range. So quite solid.

Sure, but you damage the heart muscle and that never recovers. You're more
likely to have another heart attack too.

Remember I'm 33 (well, 34 next week), if I were 50 I'd have a totally different
opinion of this. At 33 I expect to live another 50, 60 or maybe even 70 years.
Loss of some heart muscle now is gonna have a big effect on my chances later on.

20 years ago Back in the day; The standard of care was as follows:

You have chest pain, you don't die.

You go to E.R., you don't die in 2 hours

You are transferred to ICU, learned men come in and consult. Bitchy nurses make
you use a bed pan. You don't die

3 days later they perform an angioplasty, you don't die.

Today, if you have sudden onset of angina, plan on have a cardiac procedure

Estimates I've seen on malpractice insurance as part of the healthcare dollar
are slightly below two percent.

Another interesting statistic is the amount of that slice of the pie actually
paid out by the insurers - it is about 50 percent, much worse even than the
health insurers that pocket 30 percent.

I don't have exact figures, but somewhere I thought I heard
that doctors spent something like half their income on malpractice
insurance. If these figures are at all accurate, that tells you
the size piece of the pie doctors are getting, donit?

So who's getting the rest, eh?

Then something's wrong. But you know that already.

I've tried it with each going in first but those spring clips between
them are not giving way.

The radio goes in first. The spring clips detent into the matching
holes in the factory Becker. Then the ashtray slips in, since the
clips are totally out of the way. The clips are only for the radio.
If the radio won't go in all the way, likely it is cabling bunched
up at the back.

If need be, the clips snap out. That's what you have to do with
a non-Becker that doesn't have the detent holes. That's what I'll
probably have to do with the Becker Traffic Pro 7881 I'm trying to
install in the SEL.

Is there a tool that's needed?

I cannot get both in without trying what I believe would be excessive
force.

Brain? :-)

Re: [MBZ] O/T Knives

2010-01-29 Thread Rich Thomas
I bought a whole box of confiscated stuff from the security room of a
big mall store that was closing, it had all kinds of very nice stuff in
it, including some brand new shoplifted Henckel kitchen knives, brass
knucks, switchblades, butterflies, dope pipes, and other nasty stuff. I
think I offered the auction guy $10 for it, it was below his area of
concern and I'm sure the tenner went in his pocket. I got a nice 220V
air compressor, a cabinet full of car audio installation stuff, and a
couple of random mystery (but I peeked) boxes that turned out to have
some very nice nearly new Milwaukee pro power tools and other good
stuff, tools and such. All for $500, helluva deal, stuff they really
did not want to deal with as they were selling all the fixtures and
shelves and whatnot. I still have a bunch of those knives and such in a
box somewhere, but have used some of the good ones, including the
kitchen knives.

I have the same feeling whenever the Mythbusters trash an interesting

I agree with Hendrick. On my old 79 300TD the rails were hopelessly jammed
with dirt and rust and mystery stuff (soda pop?). I took the seats out,
removed the rails, and washed them thoroughly with soapy water and a brush.
After drying I greased them and reassembled the seats. The rails still
looked like crap because of surface rust but they worked like new. Do this
on a warm day and use some cardboard or a rug to rest the seats on (upside
down) while you disassemble the rails. Also, if you have the right size
taps, chase out the threads where the seat screws to the floor to make
reinstallation smoother.

To really fix a MB slide rail you need to take the seat out and
disassemble the rails, clean them and put some grease in there.

Re: [MBZ] W123 seat travel (or, my wife's legs have become shorter)

2010-01-29 Thread Dieselhead
Correct, and a couple of things I might add. Use neverseez on the
bolts when you put the seats back in.

On older cars, the seat rails had steel rollers with orings around
them. These orings dry out and rot, then the seat slides a little
bit and binds. If my memory is correct, the 123 and 126 also have
these rollers. On one car, I took the slide apart and removed the
rollers, rather than buy new slides. It is something to be aware of.
I would of tried putting new orings on, but I was not sure how to
position the rollers for reassembly to get full movement. The slide
is still working now, without rollers. I have never had to do this
to a 123 or newer. However the age of the 123 and early 126 cars is
such that this may become a problem of this sort. So far, I have
been able to clean and lube 123, 124 and 126 seats and put them back
in.

I agree with Hendrick. On my old 79 300TD the rails were hopelessly jammed

In other words, there are TWO front-to-back seat adjustments on a W123
driver's seat: one in the front, corresponding to that on the passenger
side, and one on the side. The one on the side, because the way its
tracks are inclined, affects the height of the seat more than the one in
 the front does.

BUT, there is no doubt that the 5 series is a FANTASTIC CAR. It's only got
58,000 miles and only been serviced at the dealership here in town, by the
original and ONLY owner.

Some guy is meeting me Monday morning with a check for the full asking price

[MBZ] Hirschmann replacement

2010-01-29 Thread WILTON
Rcvd Hirschmann replacement antenna assembly (made in Slovenia) for my '87 124
today ($201). One in the car drains bat when sitting with key OFF.
'Disappointed with replacement; 'requires cutting plug off original wires and
soldering 4 individual terminals onto the wires, leaving up/down switch on
dashboard inop, which is not terribly upsetting, 'cause I never use it, anyway.
Bracket for mounting bottom of assembly is different also; 'coupla plastic
clips that may require drilling coupla mounting holes - not sure 'cause I
didn't open their plastic bag yet.

'Gave my soldering stuff to BIL 3 or 4 years years ago when my tremor was so
bad. 'Beginning to wonder if I really "need" the antenna to go up and down as
bad as I thought I did. 'Just went out to car, plugged power wires into the
antenna unit in the car, ran the antenna up and unplugged power, leaving the
antenna up. Radio works fine with no power to the antenna retraction
mechanism, of course. Purpose of the antenna, of course, is to provide proper
radio reception when I want it, and it does. I may be able to stand the
"trauma" and "embarrassment" of having the antenna on an MB "standing tall"
when car is OFF and unoccupied. 'Think I'll try it a few days and see if I can
stand it.

I may have been the one who said that about the battery.
When I got my 300SD, it had a seized climate servo and drew 400ma when parked.
Left it sit a few days and it was dead. Threw in one of those 700CCA mini
batteries that I had laying around, and a few months later the glow light
wouldn't stay lit, it just blinked when I turned the key on. When I put in a
proper, new group 49 in place of the 8 year old miniature battery, the glow lamp
resumed proper function.

More likely to be the gp relay. If the thing is held together by
screws, like the factory original in my 85 300d, there is an o ring
btween the housing halves. In mine, the oring had split and allowed
water to seep in; the relay was mounted to the side of the engine bay
just under the edge of he hood. It had about a cup of water in it and
the gp light would pop on and off at random. (and it might not have
the plugs on when lit!)

Thanks Jim, I didn't have that tool so I used yours and it worked. There
are no detent holes in the new radio so I removed the clips.

Harry

I cannot get both in without trying what I believe would be excessive
force.

Brain? :-)

I put a pair of those in my cars last summer, I did pay considerably less (on
eBay) than you did though...

On my 240D I couldn't get the retraction to work until I took the radio out and
realized that whoever had installed it (back before I got the car) had clipped
the control lead right at the body of the radio. What a chowda head. If he'd
left more than 1/4" stub I'd have soldered a wire on... Anyway like you I just
ran it up and left it there. Its been over a year now with no problems.

Next one I do I'm going to wire in a switch at the antenna so I can decide to
leave it up in the winter time. The one on my 190D periodically freezes up or
worse down...

Rcvd
Hirschmann replacement antenna assembly (made in Slovenia) for my '87
124 today ($201).  One in the car drains bat when sitting with key
OFF.  'Disappointed with replacement; 'requires cutting plug off
original wires and soldering 4 individual terminals onto the wires,
leaving up/down switch on dashboard inop, which is not terribly
upsetting, 'cause I never use it, anyway.  Bracket for mounting bottom
of assembly is different also; 'coupla plastic clips that may require
drilling coupla mounting holes - not sure 'cause I didn't open their
plastic bag yet.

'Gave my soldering stuff to BIL 3 or 4 years
years ago when my tremor was so bad.  'Beginning to wonder if I really
"need" the antenna to go up and down as bad as I thought I did.  'Just
went out to car, plugged power wires into the antenna unit in the car,
ran the antenna up and unplugged power, leaving the antenna up.  Radio
works fine with no power to the antenna retraction mechanism, of
course.  Purpose of the antenna, of course, is to provide proper radio
reception when I want it, and it does.  I may be able to stand the
"trauma" and "embarrassment" of having the antenna on an MB "standing
tall" when car is OFF and unoccupied.  'Think I'll try it a few days
and see if I can stand it.

You'll be hard pressed to find anything other than maintenance free anymore.
Marine batteries are sometimes as are 6v batteries we use in old tractors but
other than that...

If its the right size and its only a year or so old I might try it. That said
both my cars have Autozone (can't remember the brand name) batteries now and
they've been great. The 190D's is probably 3 years old, the one in the 240D is
more like 5, no issues at all.

That looks like a much better deal. The two-tone door panels and
