Yes, that's right. I used to cruise my 79 240D slush at 80-85 on I 95 all the time-I always said it was a good mid lane car-the OM 602 turbo is fast lane car. Now entrance ramps on an incline are another matter-the stick 240D handles those quiet well. All 240D's require a bit of skill and a basic understanding of gravity-esp. while cruising. If that is a standard DIN mount, then all you need is a couple of flat pieces of metal to slide in and release the tabs on the mounting bracket that hold the radio in, then pull the radio out. What you do is unband the Cubans, put the Cuban bands in your wallet, reband them using a dot of glue with something US legal, and when you get back home, put the proper bands back on the Cubans. The chances are very remote that you will encounter a customs agent who is such an afficionado that they can tell a rebanded Cuban on sight. Just won't happen. So, just march your cigars right thru customs and wave them in their faces, meaning their eyes will immediately glaze over. [MBZ] York AC Compressors
So, all this talk of AC in 115's has me thinking about repairing mine. Anyone know if the York is repairable? Parts available?? I don't think my AC leaks but the compressor does not appear to compress. The clutch kicks in and the auxiliary fan kicks in but the air does not blow ice cold (or even cool). Gauges say equal pressure on both sides. Something like 70# if my memory works. It was a year or more ago when we last tried to get it going and it was my brother in law who was doing it so my memory might be faulty. I should have written it down somehwere. Do these things have a valve setup in the top similar to an air compressor? Thin metal flap type thing? If so, that might be what gave up. Our vehicle property tax goes down for three years and then stays there, with a 3 year old car paying half of new, and a 24 year old car also paying half of new. At 25 years, you've got a pretty good incentive to license and insure it as a historic vehicle. If I were to license my 16v normally, the annual license fee would be more than the sales tax from when I bought it. So every year I license my 1977 Saab for $32, and then pay $8 to transfer the plate to the 2.3-16. Saves me about $95 that way, and the state has to give me a new plate every year. Yeah, it's called excise tax. Along with county wheel tax, etc., etc. Amazingly, it's less than it used to be, at least the way I recall it. There are (legal) ways around this, too. I just bought my son's car last month and only paid $41.00 to put it on the road (not including the 7% sales tax.) That's title and registration. In September it gets titled in Florida for less than that. The DMV has a form that you both sign, use that instead of a bill of sale. In Indiana, to transfer title you pay sales tax based on the bill of sale or stated sale price. You also pay a yearly tax based on the value of the vehicle (determined by vehicle model and age, not sale price) which is part of the yearly registration renewal. FWD is very different on ice and snow -- slides at right angles to the front wheels. Very predictable, but VERY different. I don't see how there is a difference between recirculating ball and rack and pinion steering -- both systems move the wheels . Unless the RB is variable ratio like GM used to use, they are both linear. I've had both and don't remember a significant difference. Re: [MBZ] W114 300D climate controls
W115/114 /8 was introduced in 1968, and the AC was indeed installed at the dealer. Lots of stories about saving time by bending back (and breaking) the sides of the console to shove the bits in without pulling it as they were supposed to, leading to failures later. All MBs were station built up the to W123, not on an assembly line, so dealer installation isn't really that bit a deal -- it just moved the work to the dealer's shop, where it was cheaper. Re: [MBZ] ML320, 2001
I've always associated rack and pinoin with greater feedback or road feel than recirculating ball, but then, I was comparing an MG with a 220D. Probably more weight related than how the front wheels are turned. Well I must be used to driving recirc ball but seem to remember the last time I drove a rack and peanut set up, it just did not feel the same. SNIP with no SUVs but used to have a real 4x4 An interesting concept. So, you like the recirc ball steering system better? It would be interesting to drive two similarly sized vehicles to see what the difference is. I know the VeeDub Dasher I had for years was rack and pinion. My first trip in slush snow showed me that system and front drive gave me zero confidence. Zooming along, and clipped the mountable center median curb and spun 360 into the other lane - nobody there, so drove on, a bit shaken and hopefully wiser. Other than that, I have zero knowledge of rack and pinion versus recirc ball. Explain further - or are you pulling our leg, as in the rusty 240D you drove all around Swissconsin? mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] W114 300D climate controls
The presence of the parts in the manual does not preclude it being a dealer installed option, it just means it's official Benz. All the AC stuff was made in the US, after all, why ship it to Germany and back again? They all look the same because they are official Benz parts, installed by official dealers using Benz instructions, just like all their cars look pretty much the same, assembled from official parts by Benz workers. Why on earth would they look different?
