This is especially interesting to me since his rig is homebuilt and uses few commerically manufactured components. For example, he uses hay for the filter. Without a very effective filter, tar can seize the pistons. (Don't ask me how I know.) Also, we have lots of wood fuel down here in West Central Florida; much of it just for the taking. He said he might sell plans eventually. If he does, I'll be tempted to buy a set, have some parts made, and install the system in my SILs 1996 150 Ford PU since he is thinking about buying a 2013 150 with some new type engine they are selling. As you point out, it's old technology and there are many plans available; but many don't work as well as the authors claim. If I built this rig, I would first go up to Alabama and see his rigs in action. Mother Earth has a pretty good reputation for publishing workable designs. I had a buddy in Wisconsin that designed and built his own home. Part of that design was an oversize three car garage with one bay that had a shower curtain arrangement around it with floor drains that allowed him to wash a car indoors in the winter time. He also had a row of spray nozzles in the floor near the door of this bay that would spray off the bottom of the car when you drove it in. Of course the garage was heated. The floor had hydronic heat so that when he drove in at night the snow and slush would melt off the car and run into the floor drains., then the car would be relatively dry underneath when he went out in the morning. When I built my house in Port Washington, WI in 1990, I put a large ceiling mounted gas fired heater in the garage (2-1/2 car garage) as well as several floor drains along with walls that were insulated as well as the rest of the house. Then I covered them with a melamine-like material so I didn't have to worry about getting them wet. The garage doors were heavily insulated as well. I also had a hot water circulation system (so you get hot water out of the faucet immediately) that ran next to the interior wall of the garage. I put a hose bib with a tempering valve on the line so I had hot water to hose off the cars in the winter time. I was driving my 1979 300TD at the time, so I had an industrial timer on the front wall of the 300TD's bay with a cable to connect the block heater. When I got home at night I plugged it in and the timer turned on around 4:00 am to warm up the engine. I only kept the heat in the garage around 50F during the week unless I was planning on working in it. This kept it warm enough to melt all the road crap off the cars overnight and let it run down into the drains so the cars and garage floor weren't a mess in the morning. That's one thing we learned about building a house the first time around, thankfully. You can do a lot of extra stuff that really adds to the functionality and usefulness of the house for a minimal amount when you build. While I wish the process was more expedient for clear cut cases, I do not think trials should be rushed to prevent government overreach. The listers who theorize that this was an act by 2nd. amendment supporters or government haters don't make sense, since the victims were just citizens like themselves. Re: [MBZ] Air conditioning - venturi vacuum pump
I have the Harbor Freight venturi style pump. I use it to draw a vacuum on a water heater to suck up veggie oil for filtering. I do have a large Snap On compressor to run it. I have no problem getting 25 on a 50 gallon tank in maybe 20 minutes. So, it is slow but it is cheap. And if I suck oil into it a quick spray with carb cleaner fixes it. If you only need it once in a great while it may be the way to go. I have an air compressor (with 30 gallon tank) that claims to put out 5.7 cfm @ 90 psi. So perhaps I can get by with something like the above unit rather than pay several times as much for an electrically powered pump? The comments on the a/c sites vary a lot. I was hoping some of you trustworthy fellows had experience with such like. Also I am looking for thoughts on what I guess are the hydrocarbon substitutes for R 134, such as Envirosafe and Freeze 12. I tried some Envirosafe in a 20 year old Porsche R12 system last year and it is working well so far. My most pressing need is to activate the (up until now R 134) system in my cab tractor before hay season starts in June. The compressor locked up last fall. I have a new compressor and dryer, and a set of a/c gauges. My 83 300SD was converted to R 134 by a dealer's shop about 12 years ago. It is still working but the compressor is getting rumbly. Re: [MBZ] NOW let's get back to regular programming
I had a setup I made to spray off the undercarriage whenever there was crap on the roads. If you've seen the little roller things they use with mirrors to inspect the bottom of the car, it was like that only I had a hose hooked to it with a manifold made from PVC pipe about 18 long that had 4 small spray nozzles in it. If the roads were sanded or salted I would go out after dinner, hook up the hose from my tempered water and give the bottom of both cars a good spritzing. Not perfect, but I think it helped to keep a lot of the nasty stuff off of the car. The undercarriage of my 300TD was nice and clean and it was that way of the length of my ownership, so I have to believe it helped out somewhat. Re: [MBZ] Air conditioning - venturi vacuum pump
I use my HF venturi vacuum to power my oil sucker. I tried using it for a/c but it does not draw enough vacuum with most homeowner air compressors. I have a pretty decent compressor, but not industrial by any means. [MBZ] OT: Seagate 7200.11 Disk
I recall people talking about the Seagate 7200.11 firmware problem causing disks to brick. I even think someone here had repaired one. I have been working on a computer with a 7200.11 and noticed smartd said I should investigate whether it was one of the disks that had the bad firmware. I investigated and Seagate's website did say I should update the firmware, so I did. Unfortunately, that process caused the SMART value for reallocated sectors to indicate a failure. So I now need to reset the SMART table. I found the process on line, but I need a RS-232/TTL convertor and cable. Does anyone here have one I can borrow? [MBZ] Boston Marathon Bombs, a different perspective.
One of the cycling groups I ride with has a fairly famous member, Peter Sagal of NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. He finished the marathon with his blind companion 5 minutes before the first bomb hit. Sagal received the following message from William Greer on Tuesday: I have really sore legs. I am ready to start training for the next marathon, and I'm going to have a lot more long runs. I had the speed, I just need to really increase my endurance. Thanks very much for being my sighted guide; you made the marathon a great pleasure. The only problem were the bombs. http://www.runnersworld.com/races/peter-sagal-eyewitness-bravery-horror#.UW62ty7NCHQ.email -- Luther KB5QHUForest Park, IL '98 ML320 Max (164,xxx mi) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
