Re: [MBZ] Boston Marathon bombs: the early theories

2013-04-17 Thread Gerry Archer

While pressure cooker controls would be helpful, their complete elimination
would be more effective. Few people other than food faddists use them
anymore, so their disappearance would hardly be noticed.

Since these types of amateur bombs are nearly always a mixture of diesel
fuel and fertilizer, banning these two noxious substances as well as
pressure cookers should completely eliminate homegrown terrorism.

Think of all the benefits the banning of diesel fuel would provide.

Thousands of marriages would be saved since diesel widows would no longer
spend their weekends sitting in front of the TV while their husbands worked
on their diesel cars or sat at the computer discussing the merits of various
lubricants.

Replacing manufactured fertilizer with natural fertilizer (from horses and
mules) could easily be accomplished since horses and mules would have
already replaced diesel farm machinery.

The nation would return to a simpler and more natural way of life for which
many of us yearn.

This is especially interesting to me since his rig is homebuilt and uses few
commerically manufactured components. For example, he uses hay for the
filter. Without a very effective filter, tar can seize the pistons. (Don't
ask me how I know.) Also, we have lots of wood fuel down here in West
Central Florida; much of it just for the taking. He said he might sell
plans eventually. If he does, I'll be tempted to buy a set, have some parts
made, and install the system in my SILs 1996 150 Ford PU since he is
thinking about buying a 2013 150 with some new type engine they are selling.
As you point out, it's old technology and there are many plans available;
but many don't work as well as the authors claim. If I built this rig, I
would first go up to Alabama and see his rigs in action. Mother Earth has a
pretty good reputation for publishing workable designs.

Re: [MBZ] NOW let's get back to regular programming

2013-04-17 Thread Dan Penoff
I had a buddy in Wisconsin that designed and built his own home. Part of that
design was an oversize three car garage with one bay that had a shower
curtain arrangement around it with floor drains that allowed him to wash a car
indoors in the winter time. He also had a row of spray nozzles in the floor
near the door of this bay that would spray off the bottom of the car when you
drove it in.

Of course the garage was heated.

The floor had hydronic heat so that when he drove in at night the snow and
slush would melt off the car and run into the floor drains., then the car would
be relatively dry underneath when he went out in the morning.

When I built my house in Port Washington, WI in 1990, I put a large ceiling
mounted gas fired heater in the garage (2-1/2 car garage) as well as several
floor drains along with walls that were insulated as well as the rest of the
house. Then I covered them with a melamine-like material so I didn't have to
worry about getting them wet. The garage doors were heavily insulated as well.
I also had a hot water circulation system (so you get hot water out of the
faucet immediately) that ran next to the interior wall of the garage. I put a
hose bib with a tempering valve on the line so I had hot water to hose off the
cars in the winter time.

I was driving my 1979 300TD at the time, so I had an industrial timer on the
front wall of the 300TD's bay with a cable to connect the block heater. When I
got home at night I plugged it in and the timer turned on around 4:00 am to
warm up the engine. I only kept the heat in the garage around 50F during the
week unless I was planning on working in it. This kept it warm enough to melt
all the road crap off the cars overnight and let it run down into the drains so
the cars and garage floor weren't a mess in the morning.

That's one thing we learned about building a house the first time around,
thankfully. You can do a lot of extra stuff that really adds to the
functionality and usefulness of the house for a minimal amount when you build.
A lot of things you can't go back and do after the fact, or if you did it would
cost you a LOT of $$$.

Depending on the builder and his ability to understand the needs of the

issues. The bulk of the builders are idiots who put up T1-11 cookie cutter
junk. The good ones make sure there is an arctic entrance, some design ideas
that allow for reduced cabin fever (light and greater airiness of rooms) and
a heated garage, with floor drains and plumbing.

The garages are fairly larger than needs be. You get space for shop or hobby
work, but the really cool thing is that in a properly built home, you can
wash the car in the garage while a blizzard is blowing outside. High
ceilings and insulation on doors and walls stuffed enough that you probably
could wash the car in the all together

Re: [MBZ] NOW let's get back to regular programming

2013-04-17 Thread Rich Thomas
That melting of the salty gunk on a car is what leads to rust. Would be
better to let it stay frozen in place until nature takes its course, or
to use that undercarriage wash deal to clean it off. Getting it ALL off
is the key.

I had a buddy in Wisconsin that designed and built his own home. Part of that design was
an oversize three car garage with one bay that had a shower curtain
arrangement around it with floor drains that allowed him to wash a car indoors in the
winter time. He also had a row of spray nozzles in the floor near the door of this bay
that would spray off the bottom of the car when you drove it in.

The bulk of the builders are idiots who put up T1-11 cookie cutter junk. The
good ones make sure there is an arctic entrance, some design ideas that allow
for reduced cabin fever (light and greater airiness of rooms) and a heated
garage, with floor drains and plumbing.

The garages are fairly larger than needs be. You get space for shop or hobby
work, but the really cool thing is that in a properly built home, you can wash
the car in the garage while a blizzard is blowing outside. High ceilings and
insulation on doors and walls stuffed enough that you probably could wash the
car in the all together

Re: [MBZ] Air conditioning - venturi vacuum pump

2013-04-17 Thread Michael Canfield
I have the Harbor Freight venturi style pump. I use it to draw a vacuum on
a water heater to suck up veggie oil for filtering. I do have a large Snap
On compressor to run it. I have no problem getting 25 on a 50 gallon tank
in maybe 20 minutes. So, it is slow but it is cheap. And if I suck oil
into it a quick spray with carb cleaner fixes it.

If you only need it once in a great while it may be the way to go.

Travel to your favorite jungle or desert or wild place. Stand at the edge
and take off your shoes, all of your clothing, your watch, credit cards,
car keys, all the bits that tie you to civilization, including your water
bottle [plastic you know, bad bad bad] .

Then take one step forward away from these bad things and keep walking.
Commune with nature, sleep on the ground, drink where you find water, eat
where you find food. Become one with nature. Do this for one year.

Then come back to bad civilization [if you can find your way back] and
tell us all how it worked out. [Good Luck]

I eagerly await your story upon return.

I had a setup I made to spray off the undercarriage whenever there was crap on
the roads. If you've seen the little roller things they use with mirrors to
inspect the bottom of the car, it was like that only I had a hose hooked to it
with a manifold made from PVC pipe about 18 long that had 4 small spray
nozzles in it.

If the roads were sanded or salted I would go out after dinner, hook up the
hose from my tempered water and give the bottom of both cars a good spritzing.
Not perfect, but I think it helped to keep a lot of the nasty stuff off of the
car.

The undercarriage of my 300TD was nice and clean and it was that way of the
length of my ownership, so I have to believe it helped out somewhat.

From what I have read, carb cleaner.

There is a similar pipe on later model M119 engines that is difficult to
access, and the consensus there seems to be the use of a wire with something on
it to scrub and carb cleaner.

Fortunately, the earlier M119 models like mine have the EGR right up front
where you can get to it.

Grant probably read Rainbow Six. Personally, I loved the ending.

For all of those who deeply desire to go natural I offer this suggestion
and challenge.

Grant... Ohh.. and don't feed the bears... ;)

 missing.

Anyway, I tried to remove the fuel rails and injectors, but the cars seems
to have been underwater for a short time and there was crap, debris, and
rusted in all around. Instead of trying to be careful and deconstruct the
whole mess, I went for destructive removal. Hose clamps and old rubber had
rusted together and the oxidization was not helping. Lots of kroil to help
soak it free was not effective either. I had to resort to tire irons and
the 3# BFH as a coaxing tool in an attempt to break the rust sealing the
 injectors in.

I was able to free four injectors. The driver side gave up one and the
passenger side was willing to forsake three. What I did get out were not
pretty and had some rust around the metal barrel where they had sat in wet
muck for a while. I am hoping to be able to polish that off and then
maybe have them tested to see if they will function. The other fuel rails
injectors I pulled and gave a good soaking in WD-40 to try to keep humidity
 from seizing them up.

Not too shabby if it is accurate. They just got it so he really has not

I use my HF venturi vacuum to power my oil sucker. I tried using it
for a/c but it does not draw enough vacuum with most homeowner air
compressors. I have a pretty decent compressor, but not industrial

Get out your Hoppes cleaning kit select an appropriate bore brush,
tie a string to one end, put a fishing weight on the other, drop the
weight through the tube and pull the brush through, accompanied with
carb cleaner.

From what I have read, carb cleaner.

There is a similar pipe on later model M119 engines that is
difficult to access, and the consensus there seems to be the use of
a wire with something on it to scrub and carb cleaner.

Fortunately, the earlier M119 models like mine have the EGR right up
front where you can get to it.

[MBZ] OT: Seagate 7200.11 Disk

2013-04-17 Thread Craig
I recall people talking about the Seagate 7200.11 firmware problem
causing disks to brick. I even think someone here had repaired one.

I have been working on a computer with a 7200.11 and noticed smartd said
I should investigate whether it was one of the disks that had the bad
firmware.

I investigated and Seagate's website did say I should update the
firmware, so I did. Unfortunately, that process caused the SMART value
for reallocated sectors to indicate a failure. So I now need to reset the
SMART table. I found the process on line, but I need a RS-232/TTL
convertor and cable.

Does anyone here have one I can borrow?

Thanks,

Craig

Cool, but how will that work in downtown parking garages? They failed
to design it to be used in the most beneficial place, high capacity
parking. It's just another passing fad.

Keep it, we will send you some snow. Unfortunately, being delivered by
USPS, it may not get there for a year or two.

[MBZ] Boston Marathon Bombs, a different perspective.

2013-04-17 Thread Benz Hogs
One of the cycling groups I ride with has a fairly famous member, Peter
Sagal of NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. He finished the marathon
with his blind companion 5 minutes before the first bomb hit.

Sagal received the following message from William Greer on Tuesday:

I have really sore legs. I am ready to start training for the next
marathon, and I'm going to have a lot more long runs. I had the speed, I
just need to really increase my endurance. Thanks very much for being my
sighted guide; you made the marathon a great pleasure. The only problem
were the bombs.

I've got a Nokia USB cable (works with your phone, actually) that I was going to
