2013-07-04 Thread Rich Thomas
There are a coupla SDs in the knackers near me, I think one of them had
a bad tranny as there were empty tranny fluid bottles in the car, the
other one, who knows? It would be a bugger to get one out from there
though, and not knowing the condition would be quite iffy.

Wonder if any of those cars that got their engines destroyed during the
cash for clunkers debacle are still around?

To all,

finally stopped shifting gears. My mechanic says he's tried everything to
revive it but it appears something broke in the shift body as it won't shift up
from first. Do you guys have suggestions about finding a used tranny? I don't
feel like the extra money for a new/rebuilt is worth it due to the car's age,

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission W124 91 300D

2013-07-04 Thread Scott Ritchey

I don't know how your engine compares to the 617 turbo, but when my 82 300SD
started running like a pig the problem was a leaky boost signal to the ALDA.
On my car there is a switchover valve that dumps the boost pressure (to the
ALDA) when it gets an electrical command from the transmission. Most of the
boost pressure signal hoses are the hard type but there were two short
lengths of soft rubber hose at the switchover valve and they had
deteriorated to the point they vented the boost pressure signal. I replaced
them with a couple short lengths of vacuum hose and all wasOK.

Governor drive gear is plastic in these trannies and known to
fracture, leaving you with no governor pressure and hence absolutely
no upshift from first (verifty you don't have a stuck kickdown switch
or valve).

This can repaired in car, but you have to make sure there are not
plastic bits in the associated check valve downstream -- otherwise, a
new gear won't fix it.

If it's not that, it's time for a tranny rebuild.

2013-07-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
If there is a vacuum leak anywhere in the vAcuum system you will not have turbo
boost. Hook a line from the vacuum pump directly to the turbo bypassing
everything else, take it for a drive and see what happens. If you have boost
you have a leak somewhere. Also if any part of the eds is not working such as
each position sensor etc it will default to limp mode and vent the boost. There
is a long list of steps to test the system.

Re: [MBZ] One for Henifay

2013-07-04 Thread Michael Canfield
Not true. If you add a turbo alone you gain efficiency or cleaner
emissions by getting more air into the engine. More air is always better
for efficiency.

Turn up the fuel without a turbo and lose efficiency as well as creating
black smoke.

Add a turbo and turn up the fuel and you gain hp, torque and efficiency at
the expense of more potential heat. It is a close balancing act to get the
fuel and air just right without getting smoke, too high egt's or both.

Without the turbo IP and its ALDA, just a turbo won't add any power. Just
disconnect the boost signal to your ALDA and you'll see.

Dragging one of the "retrieval magnets" on a handle around the bottom of the
(plastic) drain pan might also be informative. One of the thin magnets
attached to a bendable aluminum wire can sometimes be inserted through the
drain and drug around the bottom of the pan, but removing the pan and
checking for aluminum as well as steel metal shards is the best way.

Well I took the belts off, took off the vacuum pump and took off the
valve cover.

Everything is good there nothing loose. Started the engine and the noise
is still there but I can tell now that it seems to come from the oil pan.

Could it be the oil pump? Even though the gauge says there is plenty of
pressure. Don't really want to take it all apart to check as that looks
to be as much work as just putting another engine in.

2013-07-04 Thread rogerhga
To all,
It's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I'm currently seeking tips,
suggestions, advice, etc. My wonderful old MB with around 425,000 miles has
finally stopped shifting gears. My mechanic says he's tried everything to
revive it but it appears something broke in the shift body as it won't shift up
from first. Do you guys have suggestions about finding a used tranny? I don't
feel like the extra money for a new/rebuilt is worth it due to the car's age,
etc. I've been searching the web, craigslist, etc, but have found little.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Well I took the belts off, took off the vacuum pump and took off the valve
cover.

Everything is good there nothing loose. Started the engine and the noise
is still there but I can tell now that it seems to come from the oil pan.

Could it be the oil pump? Even though the gauge says there is plenty of
pressure. Don't really want to take it all apart to check as that looks to
be as much work as just putting another engine in.

I don't have any info for the 240d but Banks has been adding turbos to IDI
Ford engines for years with great success. They gain 25% or so across the
board on hp, torque and mpg all while keeping them completely reliable. It
surely can be done as long as you know how and what to do.

7 years of daily driving that car seems to say different.

Setting up the pump right so it doesn't overfuel and keeps egt's down in a
safe range assures you will not melt your pistons. If you just add a turbo

This guy was good, and even pointed out in advance that W126 rear windows were
a real b*tch to install because of the compound curves in them. He also said
that since the back glass was laminated it could crack on one layer and not the
other, too.

He was almost all the way in and the very top right corner cracked within about
2" from the corner. He was pretty upset about it, too.

No. Same glass. Old seal was leaking so I replaced with new MB seal. Quality
independent shop. I've used them for years.

Re: [MBZ] Water in Trunk

2013-07-04 Thread Dan Penoff
If you read the fine print, any glass installer will tell you that if they
remove and reinstall a piece of glass (I had the car in to be painted and I had
them remove all of the glass and install a new windshield) they are not liable
if it cracks or breaks. In the past I had a really good independent glass guy
who really knew how to do old car glass. He did the rear glass in my 1970 250C
and one other car and it was perfect. I couldn't track him down when i needed
to do the 300SD, so I just picked a local auto glass place.

In this case they just sort of threw up their hands. I called my insurance
agent and asked them if my comprehensive insurance might possible cover
replacement. They had an adjuster call me. He asked me one question: "Can the
car be operated safely without the glass in place?" My response was "No".

A new glass place came and installed a brand new MB rear window courtesy of the
local MB dealership the next day.

My agent asked me if I planned on doing any business with the original glass
place again. Why? They were going to subrogate the claim

Yeah it is pretty thin but then so are those 0 weight motor oils.
I have a bottle of the real stuff (febi). The mineral oil for AC
use comes in a few different weights but I don't know how to do a
direct comparison. On the other hand I found Phillips 5606H for
about half the cost of Febi, if I buy 6 gallons. Don't know when
I will use that much.

I don't know if they make a number that low. The stuff is
very runny, almost like kerosene. I'd stick to the real
stuff, or one of the MB-approved substitutes. I believe
that Royco 5606H I had was on a list, at least at one time.

That I can understand. The 126 design, especially the LWB version, is so
classy. In my book it's up there in the top 10 or maybe even 5 best
automotive designs of the 20th century--not considering technological
significance, just looks. Off the top of my head, only the Citroen DS
beats it in complete timelessness--it could be 50 years old or from 50

They're right to point out the torsion-bar front suspension as a plus. I

I see lots of 450SLs down here that people think are worth a small fortune.
And usually they're the worst year, like 1975.

Where they come up with the price I have no idea. Either they're pulling
it out of a bodily orifice or they are non-MB people who are blinded by
the star, as we used to say.

For example, I had the the head of our payroll department stop me in the
hall the other day and remark about "That really nice Mercedes you drive."
I had to laugh after she left, as she drives a fairly late model Bimmer.
If she knew the age and price of the car she would probably not believe
it. That's one thing that I love about our cars, especially the older
models - they're timeless and people think they still have significant
value.

Maybe that's why these idiots ask ridiculous prices for the cars?

I knew they originally designed this abortion of a system, but I don't
think I've ever seen a Chrysler with the system.

BTW, the owner dropped his price on this car - it's down to $8900 from
$11.5k.

Certainly is a beautiful land yacht.

The fellow argues that his adding a turbo to a OM616 has no problems. I'm

Same here. That stretched look drives me nuts. In my book, tires are
supposed to look like donuts, with a pronounced bulge of the sidewall out
PAST the wheel, no matter how low-profile the tires are. Otherwise, they
don't protect the wheel against curb scrapes.

I used to get some of the same thing, until a buddy decided to take a

the difference in fuel milage between that and the Tuareg he was

Reminds me of my 82 240d. Bought it on ebay for $500 and drove it home
from DC on the PO's tags. Shortly after we got it there were teachers at
our kids elementary school starting rumors about "they must be selling
drugs to afford that car". The principal, superintendant, several
teachers, Toni and I had a very one sided conversation about my $500 car
and the fact that I would never have to worry about selling drugs as I
would have plenty of money when I got done suing them.

Never heard another peep.

Even when the car doesn't have some massive hidden defect, it's still funny to
hear people remark about "how rich you must be" or something to that effect
when they see your Benz.

A story I always enjoy is when I had my first MB, a 1979 300TD. We had
assigned parking spaces at work, and the guy who parked on one side of me drove
a 4WD, 9 passenger dual AC Suburban. At the time (late 80s) the truck probably
cost well north of $40k, which was a LOT of money for a vehicle then.

First time he saw my wagon, he remarked, "Guess I work in the wrong department."

I think I paid under $2k for that car.

BTW, the owner dropped his price on this car - it's down to $8900 from $11.5k.

Certainly is a beautiful land yacht.

Why do people say "title in hand" in car ads? Is it to reassure the reader
that they're not scam artists trying to sell a car that doesn't actually
belong to them? I've never had any trouble getting the title to a used car
from the seller.
