All pretty much spot on except number three.

That few hundred bucks they used to charge for washing titles in 
Alabama is now close to $1,000.  I know because I just checked for 
someone with the guys I used to wash the 1962 300SE's title back on 
2001.

Maybe there are cheaper places but I didn't see any.

Ouch is right!  I shoulda got my 240D title right away when I bought 
it.  I looked about a year ago and it was $400-500 then.  I have the 
car roadworthy now except the title, and I lost the bill of sale...

[MBZ] Poos lazy miracle ac sealer

I ordered a couple of cans of the platinum stuff, charged ac on my 97 e300 
getting ready to put it in, cools fine but compressor is whining. At first I 
thought it was power steering but it was not. I have decided not to proceed but 
instead go ahead and replace the compressor first.

So the AC quit working on that POS ML I got from OK Don.  The compressor 
is kicking on so I thought maybe it was a tad low.  I hooked it up to 
the AC machine, had a charge, compressor was running but high and low 
side is equilized, so I guess compressor is shot and not doing 
anything?  Or is it possible the expansion valve is stuck open or 
something?  I went ahead and recovered the refrigerant since it was not 
doing anything anyway.

more of each.

I did add about an ounce of oil to the system before charging but thought maybe 
it was even lower on oil that I thought. Thought about adding some more oil and 
trying again but figure if it's making noise it's got to be on the way out 
anyway.

This afternoon a salesman stopped in.  After he left, he came back in 
and asked whose Mercedes was outside.  I told him it was mine.  He 
said he thought that type was the best looking Mercedes, and that he 
does not like the new ones (fugly)   I agreed and he started talking 
about his 93 300D 2.5  He bought it nearly new and now his daughter 
is driving it in CO.  It has 400k miles on it.  It sounds like it is

Rack and pinion is a totally different system than a recirculating ball 
steering gear.

Are you suggesting that they would change the steering system from rack and 
pinion to recirculating ball (steering gear?)

The car has rack and pinion steering but also has a steering gear box. I know 
nothing about rack and pinion.

I'm asking if a manual steering gearbox for a rack and pinion system can be 
interchanged with a power steering gearbox in a rack and pinion system.

I know that can't be done in a recirculating ball system due to different 
gearing. That's why I ask.

[MBZ] OT: Any alfistas here?

A friend in Greece has a 1988 Alfa spider 1600 with manual steering. The 
steering box is toast and rebuilt replacement boxes cost 1000 euro there. I 
could only find power steering boxes here and they are much cheaper. The car 
has rack and pinion steering, so would a power steering box work in place of a 
manual box? I know that the gearing is different in the recirculating ball 
system that MB uses but does that also apply to rack and pinion?
Any ideas?

I sent an email to the owner of the 1996 S320 I looked at last weekend:

I thanked him for his time, told him what a nice car he had, then proceeded to 
lay out why spending $2500+ on a car for maintenance doesn't increase the value 
substantially. Then I made him an offer of $5500 and told him I would

Both the 114/115 and the 124 handle/drive better than the 123. It was a low
point in suspension design - they dropped the double wishbone front end for
the cheaper McPherson strut, and we all suffered, until they figured out
the rear end to compensate.

 Robert.  Really?  Do you honestly believe this?  You're comparing this
 car to a new Mercedes?  I visit Mercedes of Tampa almost weekly picking up
 parts, and I've never seen a new Mercedes in the condition this car is in.
 Ever.


 In its present condition, if I compared it to all of the W140 chassis
 cars I have looked at in the area over the last 30-45 days, this is a $2500
 beater.  I'm not saying that to be cruel, I'm comparing it to the cars that
 you're competing against in the market, which are also described far more
 honestly than yours.  I know you won't, but I would challenge you to go out
 and look at a couple to get an idea of what's out there so you can
 understand where this car stacks up against the competition.

 I have no interest in the car, as I said when we met.  It has rust which
 is a huge strike against it, especially when nearly every other W140
 currently in the local market has none.  It's a deal breaker if there ever
 was one.

  Thanks for the welcome back.  No, I still have my '92 W140 S350/300SD and yes 
it is the one with the Factory zeroed engine. I plan on getting a 2016 Chevy 
Volt. I was going to get a 2015 but I heard of the improvements on the 2016 so

Dad was born in 1879; Mom in 1897.  Dad's first wife died during childbirth 
in 1908, along with the baby.  Dad and Mom's families attended same church, 
same neighborhood (out in the country).  Dad remembered when Mom was born; 
they married when he was 36, she 18.


BTW, I have a photo made about 1895; in photo are Dad and Mom's dad as 
teenagers about 16 - 19 and Mom's mom as a young woman in all-white frilly 
dress and hat.

If I read this right, his point is that the _gearing_ in the
RB steering box is different between manual and power-assist
units.  He's wondering if the same is true in RP units.  I'm
assuming he can get a relatively inexpensive power unit for
his Alfa, and is worried that it'll drive differently after
the (presumably without hooking up the hydraulics) swap.

Sorry guys for not answering sooner.  I’ve been in ATL doing my recurrent 
training in the 767 simulator.

The charge was $50.  I was floored, especially since the guys in there don’t do 
anything but MB’s.  Owner has a mid 60’s 280SE Coupe and a ’69 280SE Sedan.  
Gorgeous cars.  Gene’s German Cars in Woodside.  I’m going to bring my cars 
from Maine to NYC to get work done.

It would depend on the state but in ok we have a process where you send a 
certified letter to last known owner, have an auction to sell the car for 
storage fees and send all that in to the state and they send you a title. There 
are also companies online that will do that for you.

All pretty much spot on except number three.

That few hundred bucks they used to charge for washing titles in Alabama is 
now close to $1,000.  I know because I just checked for someone with the guys I 
used to wash the 1962 300SE's title back on 2001.

EFree is a relatively small sect, it seems.
Shall we mention other small protestant sects?
i.e. Christian Missionary Alliance, or Plymouth Brethren (PB), or closed PB
I grew up in PB - yeah, not Power Blaster...
PB seems to have been really effective among protestant persuasions,
essentially codifying modern doctrinal ways.  Not that I knew that
while growing up, but from what I have learned lately it seems PB were
significantly influential, but quite quietly.  Religion - yeah, it
congers much in the mind, doesn't it?

And what about the big city catlik bruhaha bout abuse and chastised
old guys?  Maybe that doesn't really happen?  Or maybe it doesn't
happen in smaller towns?  While strict and effective in their
indoctrinations, perhaps their mode twists their mentality?  Or
perhaps the images in my mind of abuse is merely a plant from MSM
against pope.

in Ireland, but that is another whole set of stories.


The folks in the mideast have been doing this for thousands of years, 
and very long memories...  That won't change.

No fracking and no reports on the earthquake sites for today, though 
there was one 3 days ago about 150mi away.  We are actually in a Zone 4, 
Charleston had a 8ish quake back in the late 1800s, there are a bunch of 
small quakes quite often a bit north and west of us where the fault is 
easing a bit.  No telling what it was, could have been a sonic boom from 
the Marine flyboys down the coast, but it felt more like a ground shake 
than an overpressure, and it was just one jolt not like a sonic boom 
where you usually can feel 2 shots.

I still have the former State Department guy in Sarasota coming back on the 
9th.  Ironically, the way things seem to be going I may very well end up with 
that car. Not a bad thing, but if I hadn't waffled on it to begin with I would 
have been driving it for the last three weeks...

You shoulda heard and seen Mama's wailin' and wringin' of hands when two of 
my Southern Baptist brothers married Irish Catholic sisters from 
Philadelphia in '42/'43.  I couldn't understand what all the agony was 
about.  Very quickly, she and all of the family learned to love those two 
girls/women, surely, as much as our own daughter/sister.


They raised two of the finest families you'll find anywhere.

1. have the owner go get a duplicate.  cheapest and easiest.  If the 
owner is dead, the executor can do this with proper paperwork.


2.  call your DMV/whoever issues title and plates, and ask them how

Sister's first husband (attorney) was Protestant with a capital P. White 
bread country club folks, very, very nice and always quite pleasant and 
welcoming.

Wedding was sparsely attended by my family because she was marrying outside of 
the church.

Made things easy when she divorced him and remarried a few years later to a 
Catholic guy, one of her former students in the Catholic high school she taught 
in.  They didn't even have to issue an annulment for her first marriage, as in 
the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church, it didn't count since husband #1 was 
Protestant.
