Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Boy I would sure love to hear some Wilton stories about restoring mansions. I
have always wanted to do that. In fact many years ago we had the chance to buy
an old mansion like house that belonged to a local dr. Was an early 1900s was
not Victorian, but it slips the mind what style they called it. Colonial maybe.
We could have picked it up for something like 60k, had the loan all lined out
etc but for whatever reason we didn't do it. It's main issues were pluming to
the upstairs bathroom.
Several years before that there was and old Victorian that was for sale for a
long time that belonged to a school teacher that died. At the time is was
pretty much original, had all original hardwood floors all thru the house,
original interior walls, bathrooms and such. I think it got down to like $85k
and was finally sold. This was in the late 90s when I knew nothing about buying
real estate. Whoever bought it completely gutted the interior. I mean
completely gutted, all interior walls torn out, everything. It went back on the
market I think they got foreclosed on or something. I went and saw it then. A
few years later it was back on the market after somebody had completely redone
it. We went and looked at it and it was priced in mid to upper 200s but the
floor plan inside was completely different, it was just like walking into a
brand new cookie cutter house. They totally ruined the charm of the house, it
was very very sad.

I bought a portable in 1980 and installed it as a built-in. We still use
that butcher block maple top on another cabinet that has been moved house
to house.

Someplace I still have the casters in a box.

My dad has a KitchenAid that was purchased new by my grandmother in early
to mid 80's. It is a roll around one that you hook up to the kitchen sink
faucet and drains there as well. It is really old school with the big
chrome push buttons and such. It still works great.

Subject: [MBZ] Raleigh Area MBZ Indy Recommendation

About 10 years ago, I solicited (and received) recommendations for a
Raleigh

area Indy to do work on my '82 300SD.

That was just before I moved here in late 2005. After the move,
remodeling

the 1854 farm house took longer than planned and cost more (what a
surprise!) and I went back to work (part-time) until 2012. In 2008, I
bought a new Outback (after the 300TD got hard stuck in a mole tunnel
during

a downpour) so we'd have at least one car less than 20 years old and with
less than 200K miles. That moved the SD down in the driving rotation. A
locked front brake caliper (which grew into a ball-joint job) sidelined
the

SD even more. My only paved work area is too steep for serious DIY work
with all corners jacked so the SD became a hanger queen; I've barely
driven

that poor car for several years. My excuses are many but I still own the
car but haven't done needed (I think) preventive/restorative repairs. I
think new flex disks and center bearing carrier are the first order of
business. I'd like to replace other suspension rubber (rear subframe
bushings, lower control arm bushings, upper control arms, guide rod
mounts,
and maybe rear swing arm bushings) when I can. As far as I know, all
that

rubber is OE (1981 vintage).

Back on 2005 Wilton endorsed (and Rusty seconded) Tim Mize at D Quality
Service. There were recommendations for other excellent shops but they
were

more distant from my farm near Kittrell, NC, so I'd like to follow up on
D

Does anyone know if Tim Mize still works on cars at D and are they still
a

recommended indy for an old 126? Are there any new indy recommendations,
particularly north of Raleigh? My wife no longer drives so getting the
car

to and from a repair shop is a consideration. Thanks for whatever I may
learn.

Thanks

Scott Ritchey

I think it's 2008. Those from 2009 to the current date are in violation of
the emissions standards. Thus, those from 2009 to now should be bargains,
if you don't mind putting more NOx into the air than the standards since
2009 allow. They probably put out less than any of the old MB Diesels this
group tends to drive though . . .

Well, if they don't get clean in the bottom rack the machine has a problem.
I have no experience with DW innards; it may be trivial or unfixable. A new

Sounds like fun!

Today I began real work toward installing oak flooring in our living room.

Spent a few hours driving around to hardware stores and a flooring
store getting little odds and ends and some material.

Packed up daughter's toys, moved couch and tables to side of the
room with the piano and console-buffet /TV/VCR/DVD player, and then
pulled up the carpet and pad on the empty side of the room.

Rich has loaned me all the necessary power tools. SWMBO has decided
it is time. Should be done with this room in a by the end of next
weekend, may move into the dining room next...

Kaleb,
That picture looks really bad. Are you using powder Cascade? I've tried the
liquid versions and didn't get as good results. It almost looks like your rinse
is using cold water instead of hot, but your DW should only be getting hot
water, correct? Maybe it's not fully draining before it goes to the rinse. I
only use the "normal" cycle on my Maytag. I've never found a need for the
pots/pans cycle. Again, my whole house filter was a cheap way to filter
everything in the house (commode tanks, ice maker, washer, dishwasher, etc.).
And I may have soft water where some of you may be fighting with hard water or
water with chemicals, etc.
Just some thoughts...

We’ve had more problems with painters than any other trade. One painter told

[MBZ] Raleigh Area MBZ Indy Recommendation

2016-04-03 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
About 10 years ago, I solicited (and received) recommendations for a Raleigh
area Indy to do work on my '82 300SD.

That was just before I moved here in late 2005. After the move, remodeling
the 1854 farm house took longer than planned and cost more (what a
surprise!) and I went back to work (part-time) until 2012. In 2008, I
bought a new Outback (after the 300TD got hard stuck in a mole tunnel during
a downpour) so we'd have at least one car less than 20 years old and with
less than 200K miles. That moved the SD down in the driving rotation. A
locked front brake caliper (which grew into a ball-joint job) sidelined the
SD even more. My only paved work area is too steep for serious DIY work
with all corners jacked so the SD became a hanger queen; I've barely driven
that poor car for several years. My excuses are many but I still own the
car but haven't done needed (I think) preventive/restorative repairs. I
think new flex disks and center bearing carrier are the first order of
business. I'd like to replace other suspension rubber (rear subframe
bushings, lower control arm bushings, upper control arms, guide rod mounts,
and maybe rear swing arm bushings) when I can. As far as I know, all that
rubber is OE (1981 vintage).

Back on 2005 Wilton endorsed (and Rusty seconded) Tim Mize at D Quality
Service. There were recommendations for other excellent shops but they were
more distant from my farm near Kittrell, NC, so I'd like to follow up on
D

Does anyone know if Tim Mize still works on cars at D and are they still a
recommended indy for an old 126? Are there any new indy recommendations,
particularly north of Raleigh? My wife no longer drives so getting the car
to and from a repair shop is a consideration. Thanks for whatever I may
learn.

Thanks

Scott Ritchey

Alright so I ran the glasses thru again and this is how they are turning out. I
am running them again this time in the bottom rack. The top rack just does not
clean anymore and the upper arm does spin and shoot water. I'm at a loss except

Subject: [MBZ] This Weekend's Fun (long)

Yesterday was one of those days where you expend a lot of energy but don’t
accomplish a lot…

Pulled the guts out of the center console with the hope of replacing the
center vent vacuum actuator, as I’m not getting any significant volume of
air through the center vents. This car has literally yards and yards of
sound dampening material throughout the dash. It’s everywhere and covers
everything, making it a real PITA to get to anything in the dash.

Couldn’t get close to the mounting for the vacuum actuator, so I figured
it’s possible I’ve got a leak elsewhere. Decide to go with plan “B” -
take the lines off the “Gang of Seven” in the console and check each for
vacuum leaks. Got about half of them done, couldn’t get to the rest
because of the ^#*&$%@ insulation that was in the way. Guess I’ll take
another swing at this next weekend and pull the side cover off the
console. Grrr.

I wanted to check the blower on the “sniffer” tube for the thermistor, so
I pull the glove compartment liner and the bolster in the passenger side
footwell. Fan is working, so that’s good. I also finally figured out how
the weird metal bracket that holds the block of foam the fan sits in is
clipped to the brackets under the dash. Not clear, fan fan was hanging
when I opened it up originally. Love it.

Figured that as long as I was in the neighborhood, I could check the fresh
air actuators in the dash, since they’re just above and behind the glove
compartment. No joy, as again I’m foiled by a huge sheet of insulation
that is draped over the air box.

So let’s have a look at the ACC blower, shall we?

This was relatively simple to get to. Found a bit of detritus in the
blower control heatsink, oak seeds and other such outdoor stuff. Hit the
fan bushings with some ATF while I was there and left the motor inverted
for a few minutes so it would go in the right direction. Buttoned
everything back up and checked operation, good to go (still no center
vents, however, which was the original purpose of this undertaking.)

The radio (aftermarket) in this thing was a major hack job, and if I ever
meet the guy that did it I will kick him in the pants. Hard. Maybe twice
for good measure.

They cut the bottom out of the radio compartment and the cross member
below it where the ash tray goes. They had taken the ash tray out and
screwed a DIN sized box/compartment of some sort. They anchored this with
screws going in the sides, poking into the back of the side of the
console, of course.

I took this box out, found an ash tray assembly and tried to reconstruct
everything with a double DIN opening. Right now everything is in there,
but the ash tray only serves as a spacer, as if you tried to pull it out
the whole thing would come out and the radio would drop down into the
opening.

So I’m thinking that I should at least undo their hack job wiring that
currently uses the front channel only and goes to the fader.

I’m not sure if this is good or not (I think it is) but I found that the
original amplifiers for the stock sound system are intact and working.
Because this is a very unique setup, I put everything back the way I found
it and left well enough alone. At least they didn’t hack up the sound
system or the amps.

Fast forward to today….

Going to get some stuff done on the S420s (94 and 98).

Pull the 94 in the garage to do two things - troubleshoot a CEL error I’m
getting on the transmission overload switch not closing and check for the
reason that the ceramic pads I put on the car some months ago are
screeching like banshees.

The wiring to the transmission overload switch is like iron - hard,
brittle, and something I don’t want to touch. The switch checks out OK,
so I’m assuming the few remaining self destructing wires remaining on the
car is one of these. I find the wire goes into a bulkhead boot in the
driver’s footwell, but I can’t determine what wires are which. Put this
one off until I can do some research.

Get the car in the air and disassemble front brakes. I’m thinking that
the metal shims on the pads are vibrating between the pad and shim, where
there’s no grease, so I pull the shims off the pads and apply some MB
brake grease. I also notice as I’m greasing the edges of the pads that the
metal of the pad isn’t 90 degrees to the pad, meaning the backing of the
pad might only be touching the caliper on a very narrow surface area. I’ll
watch this closely.

Check the convoluted tubing I used on my rewired throttle body harness, as
it was the standard plastic stuff and I was concerned about it holding up
under temperatures. I had some engine wiring harness stuff I bought after

I use the wooden handle of a rubber mallet, position the mirror base so one
side is in place, place the mallet handle on the other side, strike smartly
with hand, should pop right in. Not easy at all the first time, you'll get
better with practice.

Just a couple of suggestions. First, don't know whether you have
"hard or soft" water. I've only used Cascade powder since my Maytag
was new. I never use rinse agents, so I've never used that
capability on the Maytag. Second, when I built my house, I installed
an inline GE whole house water filter. I change the filter once per
year (just the wife and I). So maybe my filter helps temper the
water. I've always found water spotting on glassware to be more a
function of the detergent and less a problem with the dishwasher.

Just some extra thoughts.

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-03 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
The Bosch gets things noticeably cleaner than the Maytag ever did,
and that's especially noticeable with glassware.

Do realize that your water could play a part in this, too, so it's
not necessarily the dishwasher's fault. We use a rinse agent with
the Bosch, which we did with the Maytag as well, but the Maytag
didn't give you the ability to adjust the "dose" so it went through
the stuff like mad.

Don't buy the top of the line Bosch. I bought a bottom end one for
around $600. The only differences I hound were fancier racks and
more (useless) functions on the controls. There's no clear benefit
in my mind for buying the more expensive models.

Dan

That has been true with DWs for 40-50 years. The working parts are
all the same. the fluff is fancier in the expensive one.

Just a curious question in regards to the build up problem some of
you are having. Do you put greasy/oily pots or pans in the
dishwasher? I'm on a septic tank system, so I put all grease/oil in
the trash. I clear most food off pans and plates. I don't have any
problems with the door areas. Also, is your hot water set high
enough? Just curious if other factors may be involved. Again, I
cleaned my "old" Maytag last year after 16 years of operation and
found no similar problems. Maybe I'm lucky or whatever.

merkun-built, for whatever that is worth.

MB are expanding the Sprinter factory in the area, on Friday I went to

and they had an "expo" at the place with various vendors. MB were there
trying to recruit workers and had some cheepchinee swag to give away which

Right, though he claims to know all about it. This job does not need a
plasterer nor a dry-waller - just somebody with some common sense and willing
to listen to me, who can easily tell such a person how to do it and even
broaden his/her skill set. I'd bet that I could teach any of "youse guys" to
do it very well in far less than an hour.

I vaguely recall that Bosch dishwashers are built in NC somewhere, so
merkun-built, for whatever that is worth.

MB are expanding the Sprinter factory in the area, on Friday I went to
pick up my wife's packet for the local bridge run, which she did not do,
and they had an "expo" at the place with various vendors. MB were there
trying to recruit workers and had some cheepchinee swag to give away
which I got for mama. Boeing, Volvo, and MB all going after local
workers, which is interesting.

Any of the pros at HVAC-TALK would probably tell you the opposite, oversized compressors cycle themselves to death. It's more the number of power cycles per hour than the running minutes per hour that matters. My parents' Coldspot freezer, still running when retired last month, is one example. It had been running constantly (except for power failures, annual defrostings, and 6 relocations) since my brother broke the temperature knob off of it in 1959. Yes, it was worn, yes, it clattered horribly (not sure if the clatter was internal or from worn out mounts) upon restart after a power failure, but it was made to last and it did, and the fact that it only had a couple of hundred starts in the past 50 years probably added decades to its life.

We do use the rinse stuff in the maytag as well. It does allow you to
adjust the amount going in, maybe I have it set too low. I think I may
pull the drain line and see if maybe it is plugged up, and maybe pull
the thing apart again but as I mentioned it seems with the Bosch with
just a simple filter system there would not be a need to have to take
things apart all the time to clean them out.

Curly,
I totally agree about the energy rating, especially on refrigerators. My
current one required a new compressor, fortunately before going out of
warranty. The repair guy said the companies are undersizing the compressor to
get better energy ratings, but as such, the compressor wears out sooner because
it has to run too much since it's too small.

We have a Whirlpool "Quiet Partner I", which was about $200 a few years
ago. Quieter than the 1994 Maytag it replaced, but not terribly quiet.
Plastic tub. No filters, not many options, just gets the job done.

I don't remember which brands make repair info available to home owners,
but I think that is important. I think it is very hard to find repair
info for Maytag appliances.

Kitchen appliances are very simple compared to our beloved cars. There's
no good reason we shouldn't also fix our own appliances (if we want to).

Not so far, but we’ve only had it about a month.

The Maytag was flat out nasty in this regard. If I didn’t clean it about every

Re: [MBZ] Best way to test fan clutch

2016-04-03 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
you drill a hole for a #10 sheet metal screw (or a self tapping
machine screw) in the unfinned center part, away from the bimetal
spring. Pharmacy gave me a 10 cc syringe without a needle. Seems to
me the dose was 16 cc. Shoot that in. Wipe clean. I put locktite
on the screw head and put it on. 3/8" max length for the screw. You
can use a 3/4", but check rotation first before you install the fan.
You can cut off the screw after you make the threads with it. A #12
or 14 screw can be used if you can find one. Nothing smaller than
#10.

I had to remove the bimetal spring and the operating pin to allow air
to vent. Otherwise I could not get the oil in fast enough.

Wire brush or pressure wash the fan out of the car first to remove
the dirt and old grease. Do the fill out of the car.

Yes, the coasting test is another way to check. The dead fan clutch
on my first SDL coasted for a long time after you shut down the
engine. It was winter, so I did not change it right away. The fan
came off and ruined the radiator. Lesson learned

I have a container of the 1 C fluid.

How many days did it take to fill it?

Mine failed. After putting in the specified amount of 1
centistoke silicone oil, they passed.
