So the other house has natural gas and house has been vacant. I only
had gas turned on for the last 2 months. Hot water heater is turned
all the way down and furnace was set at 60 the first month. Bill for
this vacant house was only about $50 a month less than the house we
live in which is total electric. Around $120 for gas for an empty
house. The bill for this house running heat pump during the coldest
part of winter so far was about $180. So the 2nd month I turned off
the furnace completely so the only thing running is water heater on
low, that bill was only about 5-6 less. I think the gas company has a

Make sure you get it all notarized. Even with that I would still
have him get a title and then transfer it to you. I think there
is a penalty to be paid because it wasn't titled in Fl right

Well, Ja. But why not take yer own measurements and design yer own?
I've never paid for plans for anything! I have an Ames Draft-Pak, will
travel.

Designed my own house, garage, trusses, stairs, spiral/combo stairs,
commercial building, 70 gal/squeeze cider press and a bunch of other
things i've forgotten about.

I was forced once, however, by the state of HI to get an engineer's
stamp on a set of drawings to assemble an industrial mezzanine. They
did not respect the stamp of da haole guy who did da engine-erroring.

If you are DIY, you won't need to buy any plans.

When my mom died in 06 they had funeral insurance with the local
funeral home. You buy a policy for an amount like $10k or so then all
the funeral stuff is done with that, casket, the service, embalming,
transport, whatever. So a few months later I am sorting through all
the estate stuff, and I find this other insurance policy for $10k, no
idea what it is. So I call up the insco to find out, I have to send
them paperwork so a coupla weeks later I get a call from them saying
they paid the funeral home with the proceeds. I told the girl my mom
had a policy specifically for that, why did they pay this to the
funeral home. She says well they called and said they needed to get
paid for the funeral. Keep in mind as far as I knew they were not on
this policy, my dad was the beneficiary. The girl had no idea why
they had done that, there was no real record of it and however it
sorted out. I didn't even know she had this policy, it was something
she bought ages ago. WTF?

So I call this woman I had dealt with at the funeral home, she was no
longer there and I get the runaround. So I call my auntie, who knows
everyone in this little town, and she gets me the name of the head guy
over there. So I ring him up, explain the situation, where is this
money? He claims not to know anything about it but will check and get
back to me. A week later no call, so I ring him back, finally reach
him, and he hems and haws and yeah they should not have got that money
as there was another policy specifically for the funeral. He never
could explain exactly what happened but it was pretty clear I busted
him and his little scam. I suggested I would have my dad's lawyer and
the county prosecutor (I had dealt with her extensively related to
another situation of people ripping them off) discuss the matter with
him, and OBTW how much exactly did that funeral cost and how much was
that other policy? A few days later I get a check for like $17k which
included however much that policy was worth and the leftover from the
funeral costs. So basically this outfit was a bunch of damned
thieves, tried to rip me/my dad off for $17k. I got to thinking about
how many other people they probably scammed like that, no one would
really ever know unless they did a really detailed study of all the
dead person's papers and such to figure it all out. My parents's
stuff was a complete mess, so it was kinda happenstance I found this
policy and then chased it down.

Or at Costco:

https://www.costco.com/funeral.html

Buddy I grew up with dad was a Lutheran minister. He was also a woodworker, so
we got along great and were often swapping info and tools. He built his own
casket and fashioned it like a low table, so it could be of use in their home
until needed.

He was in really good physical shape, not an ounce of fat on his body. The
church had a Thursday night basketball league we all played in (you could be a
Catholic and play in it, too, as they needed the dudes.) So one night there are
two games going on in the gym at the church, and all the sudden we’re looking
over from the far court and there’s a big commotion under one of the baskets.
Minister was driving in for a layup, went up, came down, collapsed on the
floor. Probably dead when he hit it from an aneurysm. Blew out an artery.
Sucks.

Saw the casket in use the next week.

No, but next time you are through there you need to find Ray's BBQ
joint and pop in for some pig. I first found him driving through
there when I stopped for gas right off the road there, could smell Q
and I was hungry, asked some guy at the next pump where that was
coming from, he showed me 2 buildings over. I would stop there every
few months and Ray always remembered me, we would chat. Stopped by
once and the building was gone, had burned down, so I went to a little
place across the road and someone in there told me he had a new place
but i did not have time to go to it. Have not been back through there

We immediately contacted our guy at IU. All we know is that the guy from IU

I talked to a high school buddy of mine who runs a funeral home in the same

Apparently he was known for pulling stunts like this. He said that the IU

time around here. Grandma was specialized in special ed back when special ed
was a new thing and helped come up with a lot of the programs and such.

Did they write in the current owners name in the title as the buyer to transfer
it to? If so he needs to get the title in his name. If the person is named on
the title now just signed it and the buyers space is blank, then all you have
to do is put your name in as the buyer.

Re: [MBZ] Compressor WUZ: Floors are done

2017-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm still undecided if I killed my compressor or not. Last fall I got thinking
that I maybe ought to change the oil in it since it'd been almost a year with
the first change of oil.FLAPS had $10/qt compressor oil or $3/qt 30wt
non-detergent. I put in the latter but the compressor made a noise I didn't
like and got harder to start. I ordered some Redline compressor oil that runs
$20/qt, when I drained the old oil it came out with a silver metallic sheen.
The "bad" noise is still there and its still more difficult to start than it
should be. I'll change it again this summer but I'm not super confident.
Once its running it seems to work okay though.

I came into this world kicking and screaming, unable to speak or walk,
nearly blind, pooping myself, without a penny to my name, hungry, and
covered in someone Else's blood.

I plan to leave the same way.

Any questions? ;))

Served as guardian for my Aunt from age 82 when she could no longer live by
herself in her own home until age 97 when she passed.. Started with an
assisted living center that was a basically a nice 1 bed apartment, with
nursing staff and meals, laundry service, etc.. at $3,000 a month, as her
health declined that graduated to more care and more monthly expense in an
almost geometric scale.. last 3 years was full hospital style care, and,
depending on medical needs for a particular month, ran from a low of $8,000
per to a bit over $10,000 per month.

Since no one knows for sure how long those "last years" will last, plan
ahead carefully, and remember those relatives that pissed you off every
year at Thanksgiving dinner? There are the ones who will be making
decisions about your quality of life at the end.. [ouch?].

I can say is that if you haven’t ever dealt with the CA DMV, you’re a very,
very lucky person.

I walked into the Florida tax collector’s office with a bill of sale and a
letter from the attorney who probated the estate the car came out of stating
that the car was a part of an estate they had power of attorney for the owner
and that they were conveying ownership to me. The folks in FL couldn’t have
cared less. No CA title - no title in Florida. Went back to the attorney who

that the only way I would get a clear title was to pay the 5-6 years worth of
non-operation fees and penalties (in person!) That was about $1800 at the time.
 Yeah.

I ended up paying about $500 to a company in Alabama that washed the title and
sent me a clean AL title in my name. Walked into the FL tax collectors office
the next week and walked out with a FL title and registration.

2017-03-01 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Some things are better than others. Not HF specifically, but I have been
unhappy with air tools in several cases and replaced them with brand
name products. I have a big framing nailer that never worked the way I
thought it should and replaced it with a Paslode which is night and day
better. Similarly with a hardwood flooring nailer. I had a clone that
just caused me trouble. I swapped it for a Bostich and no more issues.
The new one never misses a beat. It cost a lot more than the clone but
was worth it as it is a pain when nails do not set right and one has to
either pull them out or drive them further in with a punch. I just
replaced a 16 ga finishing nailer with a DeWalt unit too and am happy
with it as well. On the other hand, I have a couple of the little 18 ga
finish nailers that are no name and they work fine.

I have no issue with sockets and wrenches from the far east. Their
quality has improved greatly in the past 10 years or so and the ones
that I have acquired are fine. The finish on them is now much better
than it once was.

I don't think I have any no name electric tools but I know folks that do
and some of them have been very good too. Some have not.

Yeah, this has all sorts of butthurt all over it. Florida isn’t going to let
him off the hook on this because they want their pound of flesh. You can do
“pass through” titles in Florida but only by dealers that I know of. Otherwise
you’ve got to title and register the car within the statutory time frame (30
days?) or the owner has to pay big penalties.

I don’t see how this guy thinks he’s going to unload the car without a valid
Florida title. Florida is a lot like CA in the way that it gets its claws into
the transaction whether you like it or not.

"Your $1 shoes hurt my feet"
My HF 21 gal compressor was like $140, anything smaller than that doesn't have
enough air to be useful.
Ideally before I replace this one I'll get 220v run to the garage, the 2.5hp
motor takes a long time to fill the tank...

If you "skip a generation" then you have to be sure the title does not

Re: [MBZ] Parts car for Kyle!

2017-03-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m not sure what Florida will do if there is no title. If the car was exempt
from a title in the Carolinas it might not matter. What’s going to happen is
that Florida is going to look up the VIN and see where it’s from and who’s
shown as the owner. If that doesn’t match what you have you’re going to have
trouble.

The alternative is to have the title “washed” by one of the title services you
see listed in Hemmings and other places that deal in classic and vintage cars.
It will probably cost you a good $1000 to do.

If you have the time you might want to call the tax collector’s office in your
county and talk to someone about it. If you go into the tax collector cold
you’re liable to come out without a title and be very unhappy.

Dan - been there, done that in Florida

Re: [MBZ] Senior living

2017-03-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just remember what DBV says: It’s all in your genes.

My Mom lived into her mid 80s but the last 3-4 years she was in an assisted
living facility, which is just a fancy name for a nursing home where you can
still pretty much care for yourself.

She didn’t have dime to her name, but most facilities will take a certain
number of Medicare patients to comply with accreditations, I believe. Mom was
super anti-social as she aged, and went through roommates left and right. We
kept telling her that Medicare wouldn’t pay for a single/private room, but I’m
pretty sure she kept being a PITA to anyone she was paired up with just to get
her own room. After about a year of this they finally relented and gave her a
private room.

When my brother set her up there he pretty much had to sign over her Social
Security in total to the facility. They took it all for her room and board and
I think she got to keep like $50 of it that went into a sort of commissary fund
so she could buy stuff in their little “store”.

Mom went in her sleep one night, which was great - we should all go that way -
and other than being a curmudgeon was pretty sharp until the end.

On a related note, she willed her body to science, more specifically, to
Indiana University’s School of Medicine. She had made the arrangements years
ago, and was very clear that this was what she wanted. The claimed her body
before any of us could see her and that was it. They don’t tell you what they
do with the remains, but when they’re done with them they cremate them and then
either return the “cremains” to the family or bury them in a common crypt in
Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

It’s a really cool thing that they do - once a year they have a
non-denominational memorial service for all the families of the donors on
campus that is mandatory for all first year medical students to attend. Then
they take the cremains to Crown Hill and inter them in an area set aside for
those who have donated their bodies to science and hold a graveside ceremony as
well. really nice way to memorialize these folks and honor the families as
well.

And personally, I like the Inuit thing - when you get old they put you on an
ice floe and let you drift away...

My MIL had bought Long Term Care (LTC) insurance which covered the 5K/mo. cost
of a small elder care home just a few minutes away from our house. The family
farm remained intact and was passed on to my wife and her siblings as a result.
My MIL was cared for extremely well by the lovely family who ran this excellent
facility. In our area the majority of these family run homes are operated by
Romanian immigrants, who thus make a substantial contribution to the community,
work very hard, and in doing so create substantial wealth for their families
quickly.

So how do people pay for that? Does insurance pay for it? Does the state? If
people are paying that much themselves I would think they would run out of

Re: [MBZ] Senior living

2017-03-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
a way to print money around small towns is to find a 4-5 BR ranch house,
find team of nurses married to each other then find 4-5 old ladies who
need communal living. rent the rooms in the big house for a thou a
month less than the big places, give the nurses free housing and 50k a
year, pay a little upkeep as needed and pocket a bunch o money. Nurses
prep and serve meals, make sure everyone takes the appropriate drugs,
and are on call 24/7 in case one of the renters needs help.

Next time your house is vacant, add a couple BR and give it a shot.!

I was driving down the road today and there was a commercial on the
radio talking about some new assisted living place opening soon and
how they were fixing $3000 off the first months rent. Holy hell I
would hate to see how much the rent is. If I'm old I will just stay at
a Mexican resort or go on continual cruises for cheaper.

The problem is the current "owner" has the title, in the previous owners
name. Never transferred to his ownership in Florida. He is telling me
that I just "pretend" that I just purchased the car from the Carolina
dude. I don't know if the Carolina (north or south I do not know) title
has a date on it or not, I just hate when people do things like this
half-assed. I replied to Jerry that I would expect a bill of sale from him
regardless of the state of the title. I do not want to drive home with a

Re: [MBZ] Floors are done

2017-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've had 2, one I murdered by forgetting to add oil. The other I may have
murdered by using cheap oil. It doesn't like to start if its even slightly cold
now. Might take the cover off and clean it and see if that helps.
They're cheap though and a good entry to air tools if you don't use them a lot.
I love having a compressor and a long air hose. Oh, the HF retractable air
hoses are nice too.

Re: [MBZ] Senior living

2017-03-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Well my grandmother was healthy as a horse and would still be out push mowing
and weed eating her yard into her early 80's. Her mind was still slipping at
that point though and the last couple of years she could not remember to eat,
take meds and such. She died in 03. Now my grandfather who died many years
before her in 91 was a WW2 Seabee and had emphysema from the 2 packs of non
filtered camels a day but boy he was sharp as a tack until the day he died.

Yeah that is how it usually works, docs want to do some procedure, or
there is some injury, and it goes downhill fast. My mom had gall
bladder surgery, she lasted about a week after that. My dad had that
done too, which is what ended up landing him in the NH as he decided he
wasn't going to do any rehab to get back to the ALC so that was that,
now he just lies in the bed and watches TV, does nothing else. Not
quite my idea of living life, but his choice. I hate seeing all his
money drain away to go to that place, esp when to my way of thinking he
has no particular life, but its his money so his choice I guess.
Nothing more I can do for him in that regard, he made his choices.

Re: [MBZ] Parts car for Kyle!

2017-03-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
When I bought my 124 cabriolet, it had been abandoned at a garage and the
tow truck guy (a retired cop) went through the hassle of getting a new
title issued. Here in SC the deal is the new "owner" sends a registered
letter to the last registered owner's address, I think the letter basically
says that if the registered owner doesn't respond in 90 days or some time
period, the state will cancel the old title and issue a new title to the
new owner. Once the 90 days are up with no response to the state, new
owner can get a new title issued.

Check with your local sheriffs office or municipal police, they may even
have the info online.

I wonder if those millions of yankee expats who retired to Mexico will
suddenly become non-grata when Trump boots out the dreamers et al.  Their
return to the USA will be a boon to the retirement home industry.

Re: [MBZ] Senior living

2017-03-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
God I can't even imagine what it must be like to have to live in a nursing home
or alc. That is what sucks is owning property and building assets all your life
to have it go to a nursing home in the end. I know when my grandmother was
still alive they had to get the house out of her name and it had to be out of
her name for a certain number of years so if she did go to a home ssi would pay
for it, otherwise they take the house. As it turned out my father lived next
door and took care of her for many years while his 3 other siblings lived their
lives. She had Alzheimer's which progressed to the point she did not know who
he was anymore she just knew my dad as the guy next door. Very very sad. I'm
sure she did not know who I was either. Anyway it got to the point that he
could no longer take care of her and her this point she was in the high 80's so
he put her in some sort of center. She was there maybe 2 days, less than a week
for sure, and somehow managed to get out and night, fell, and broke her ankle
or leg, can't remember detail. She was sent to hospital where they did a
surgery IIRC to repair the break, but she ended up dying a couple days later in
the hospital.
