Re: [MBZ] I need a groundhog recipe

2017-08-27 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
You first got to determine if he's a Republican or Democratic groundhog since
everything in the Washington area is either Republican or Democratic.
If he's a Republican groundhog, you can catch him, take him out in the woods
somewhere, and he'll make his own living in the wild.
But if he's a Democratic groundhog you might as well resign yourself to feeding
him the rest of his life.
(Sorry, Dan. couldn't help myself.)

Once in the trap, assuming you've got access to a car with a gasoline engine:
Put trap with animal in to a large garbage bag. Tie garbage bag over the end
of the exhaust pipe. Rip a small hole at other end of garbage bag. Start
engine, listen to radio for ten minutes or more. Shut off engine, empty trap
into garbage bag, close up bag and put bag in dumpster.

2017-08-27 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I hate those 'smart' things. Best charger I've ever used is my old Shauer
that I got at Sears in the 80's. I've had my eye out for another one for
years, just so I have a spare. I had to use mine to 'jump-start' the
nieghbor's too-smart charger more than once.

If it has membrane switches, or LED/LCD displays I don't want it.

There is so much I don't like about that car, besides the price tag.. I'm
truly insulted.

Hard to explain.. I don't like it... it's "off balance" ...

Re: [MBZ] Battery Charger Recommendation?

2017-08-27 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I like the concept of the newer, high efficiency, low heat output, light
weight computerized chargers.
I don't like a charger that's so smart it says "That battery is discharged, so
I refuse to charge it".

Every year or two, I lug my 10lb Schumacher over to the neighbor's house to
jump-start his nice smart charger with the digital display (my old fashioned
transformer charger raises the voltage to the point that the new-fangled
charger is willing to turn itself on).

If you just want reliable, and don't mind what it weighs or how efficient it
is, and want to do a five minute boost to start a dead car...
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/schumacher-battery-charger-100-15-2-se-2151ma/9200015-P
(I wouldn't buy from Advance without at least a $20 off coupon, but then it
wouldn't be expensive enough for free shipping, so I'd have to buy something
else because they don't stock that charger in stores...)

Or, once I got that expensive I'd make the step up to one of the heavy duty
$100 chargers on wheels, you sometimes see them for $70-80 at Sears on Black
Friday, only 3 months away...

[MBZ] Battery Charger Recommendation?

2017-08-27 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Looking for a versatile, cheap, and reliable charger. I used to have a 2/10/50
amp charger that could help a weak battery start an engine. Looking on Amazon I
see a lot of chargers that have about a 10% negative review for failure after a
few weeks or months. That would be frustration I would like to avoid.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? $50-$60 seems reasonable, but not for
something that is likely to fail that soon!

Try growing watermelons, and having 200lb varmints walk down a row in the melon
patch, kicking a hole in a melon and taking a sip, kicking a hole in the next
melon and taking a sip...and you can't just shoot a deer for vandalizing your
garden.
Seeing the carnage in my grandparents' garden when I was about 5 years old left
an impression on me. Even at that age I knew what a horrible waste it was, to
the point I can still close my eyes and visualize those dark green melons with
hoof prints in them today.

That would be my worry. During the 80's as a firefighter we saw a lot of

[MBZ] OT - Guns

2017-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Finally got out between rain showers to run a few rounds through my new (to me)
shotguns. Went down to a rural (and I mean RURAL) outdoor range about 15 miles
from the house near Fort Lonesome, a remote crossroads that hasn’t had
residents for probably 50-75 years.

https://www.facebook.com/shootshackgunrange/

Ran a box of shells through the Beretta 686 and the Lanber semi auto. Forgot
to take my shooting vest, for which I’ll probably pay for tomorrow.

The Beretta worked great, patterned well and even with the stock butt pad
wasn’t too bad. I was shooting 2-3/4" Remington Gun Club target loads, wth
1-1/8 oz. 7-1/2 shot. Since I haven’t shot in a while it was a bit of a wakeup
call, even after going through a few hundred rounds of 9mm at the range with a
buddy last week. Been using a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sport Electric
Earmuffs, and man, do those things work great! The really nice part is being
able to have a conversation or hear low velocity sounds with them.

The Lanber worked well and patterned great, too. It, however, had a butt pad
that was nearly imperceptible, and even with the loads I was firing banged me
up a little. A good reminder to make sure I have my vest with me next time if
I use it. Guess I should probably consider looking for a butt pad for it.

Came home and gave both guns a really good cleaning and discovered I didn’t
have a choke wrench for the Beretta. Gotta get one of them or a speed wrench
ASAP so I can pull the chokes and clean the barrels properly. Also need to buy
a box of patches, as I’m almost out.

So now that both guns have checked out the next stop is the sporting clays
range and to bust some clays. Hopefully the weather will cooperate next weekend.

Acquaint yourself with the little foot adjustment, left side, that sets
height. That will meter the distance above the carpet and thus.. how much
harder it is or not to push.

It will be much more easy to push on carpet when adjusted correctly...

[MBZ] OT: Kirby vacuum

2017-08-27 Thread MG via Mercedes
The wife brought home her Mom's Kirby upright vacuum that Mom had
been using since the old man bought it for her back in the 50's.
Seems our second daughter had laid claim to it many years ago and
grandma told her it was hers when she was done with it. Well the
time is here and June takes it down to her. SIL takes one look at
it and asks my daughter what possible use she could have for an
old piece of junk like that. Mind you this has all the original
attachments still in the original boxes. So Samantha being the
good wife decides she doesn't want it. I really thought I had
taught her better. Anyway I decided to vacuum the living room,
kitchen and hall today. OMG what a workout! It isn't that the
thing is heavy, the kitchen was easy, but when I hit the carpet
it was like pushing a tank. You could see the vacuum picking up
the carpet. I wish my "heavy duty" shop vac had even half the
suction of this. I may see if I can steal this to use in the
shop, but I'm very much afraid that I may not get a chance. June
thinks it "isn't too bad" so I'll just have to dream about an
adequate shop vac.

I've heard about how good these are but as they say seeing is
believing. I guess the next job is taking it apart and doing a

So after replacing the caps it worked but was intermittent. So I reflowed the
solder on all the joints. It worked better but still intermittent. I pulled it
again yesterday and reflowed the joints again and added a little solder to a
few joints that were lacking. Put the board back in the car and now as soon as
you turn on the key the fuse blows. So I evidentially have created a bridge
somewhere. I pulled the board back out and will see if I can find it and hope
it did not ruin the board. I don't see any burned spots anywhere. . I really
need to get one of those lighted magnifying glass things for my work bench.

[MBZ] 1974 450SE on BAT

2017-08-27 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I always wanted one of these but even 25 years ago they were already
cr*pped out. This one is by far the best example I've ever seen. Wonder
what it will fetch... If the miles could be documented it should be worth
easily in the mid to upper teen$. I remember the magazine ads when the
450SE first arrived in the USA. This was the flagship for 1973 - 1974.

Yeah, the comment regarding the fires affect on the engine of "Motor

*/Repairing a gas engine always costs more than I think it should.  I
owned a similar MB except it was a SE not SEL but the rest was the

sufficient performance even in a heavy 4 door sedan.   It's possible
that's a 38K car especially since it was released near the height of the
gas crisis of the 70s.  OPEC and all that making long lines & "Sold Out"

new SEL 4.5 would not be living paycheck to paycheck I would hope so
perhaps it didn't affect them as I would think.  SO who knows, maybe
they have all receipts so the mileage can be confirmed?
I was always a sucker for those cars.  Still am, would love a car like
this one but not as a project.  Also, I'm thinking the 6 cyl. 280 engine

Re: [MBZ] Procedure for R&R Engine Shutoff Valve? W124 1991 300D

2017-08-27 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Thanks Curley,
When doing something like this I much prefer your suggestion of
actually seeing the result of a movement since a problem can cause a
runaway.

As I recall, the "screws" are t30 torx head.

You can also remove the side cover on the IP to watch the rack
movement to be positive the new shutoff moves the rack to "OFF" with
vacuum from the Mity-vac.

It's fairly easy, but rather fiddly, and I'd not do it with a knee
replacement acting up, you need to spend quite a git of time leaning
over the I".

You will have to remove the boost control can from the IP, which is
the fiddly part -- unscrew the captive nut and the bottom and fiddle
around until you get it in the right position to roll out, then take
out the screws that hold the shut-off in place, unhook the rod on the
bottom side and remove.

Install the new shut-off making sure you hook the roc on properly,
replace the screws.

VERIFY THAT IT'S INSTALLED RIGHT! Using an external vacuum source,
pull a vacuum on the newly installed solenoid and make SURE the
shutoff lever moves all the way down smoothly. If you don't get it
hooked up right, the engine can run away when started and will throw
a rod unless you can get enough fuel lines loose first. Keep a 14mm
wrench in your hand on startup.

Replace the boost control can, which is the hard part. It is a real
PITA to get it in place and standing up properly to get the nut to
engage.

Guess it depends on how long you want to stand on that knee, leaning
over into the engine compartment.

Getting old sucks.
