Yup. My "plot" didn't grow any this year. Probably 'cause it was

throwing codes (and will my dongle read them?), I could then look them

On Amazon what appears to be the same device, minus all the adapters

So now I'm also wondering if one of those cheap bluetoof things that

or DX, what is special about this particular device? Plus it looks
like whatever S/W it has only runs on flavors of winders if you want
to use USB or even bluetoof I guess, which is annoying.  I think I
could use a standard app on either the ifone or an android, which are
readily available for a few $$.

What should I do (besides going out to try the scanner I have to see
if it can read the codes on the 99 E$500D).

Like buying Bosch ignition points from the VW dealer or the Porsche dealer.
Everybody knew, decades before the internet, that you wanted to cross reference
the Porsche part number to the Bosch number and buy it from an independent
parts store, or cross the Bosch number to a VW number and buy it from the VW
dealer. Prices on the VW parts were often less than half the price of the
Porsche parts, even if they came in yellow and red Bosch boxes from both
dealers.

he went to the parts counter. The partsman asks what they are for and is told
one for a Chevy pickup and one for a Buick sedan (I don't recall what years

shows them separately and the Buick filter is much more expensive than the
Chevy filter. My father asks why and is given some weak excuse, so he tells the
guy he has changed his mind and wants 2 filters for the Chevy. Parts guy is a
bit miffed but produces a new invoice and the same filters are sold for the

I had similar happen when I was looking for 10 gallons of synthetic
75W-90 for our Kenworth's differentials. I called around and went to
Fleet Pride in Albuquerque to purchase it because they had the best
price.

When I got there to actually buy it, it was noticably lower than the
telephone quote. The fellow there said he wasn't sure I was coming in,
so he quoted a higher price over the phone. I was glad for the lower
price in person, having saved something like $100, IIRC.

I doubt that very much. Retail parts aren't a big profit center for them, so
they are actually very affordable. Just don't call in and ask for a price over
the phone or they'll bone you. However, if you show up in person they're good.

Had a buddy call them for a price on an SLK oil filter. Phone guy quoted him
$20.

Had him walk in ahead of me at the counter so they wouldn't associate him with
me and it was $10. I stepped up and said he was with me and it went to $8.

It's the games they play. Why, I have no idea.

Re: [MBZ] OBD2 tool

2017-10-24 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I bought this one a while back, and IMO the proprietary data is worth the extra
$. You get one manufacturer's code set free with the hardware. In the case of
MB it covers MB, Sprinter and "Smart".

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0QQZY7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8=1

I used it on my inspection of the ML320 I bought, and the PO was looking at all
the codes I pulled while I was checking. At dealer prices to overcome the
codes, it scared the PO enough that I was able to negotiate a substantial price
reduction.

The service records indicated a 9 year old battery, so I thought low voltage at
startup might have caused some codes. A new battery... and the codes were
gone!!!

OBD dongle reader that works fine on my trucks etc, would that work
(realizing I should just go try it, but I am having lunch at the
dumpooter now so I thought I would lazily ax)?  Is the Benz OBD just
throwing codes (and will my dongle read them?), I could then look them up?

On Amazon what appears to be the same device, minus all the adapters and
gender menders is $60.
https://www.amazon.com/Fabal-Bluetooth-Truck-Diagnostic-Silver/dp/B07476L15C

So now I'm also wondering if one of those cheap bluetoof things that
talk to a phone would also work, they are only a few $$ from Banggood or
DX, what is special about this particular device? Plus it looks like
whatever S/W it has only runs on flavors of winders if you want to use
USB or even bluetoof I guess, which is annoying.  I think I could use a
standard app on either the ifone or an android, which are readily
available for a few $$.

What should I do (besides going out to try the scanner I have to see if
it can read the codes on the 99 E$500D).

No time now but I am so pleased for them. Seriously talented drivers, all
meeting seven years of saturdays working on their 87 325i coupe with many
events and prior race wins, but this is their first regional chumpionship
victory. Two eight hour races at road america over two days. They caned the
field in the wet conditions and won class c and overall by nine laps I
think. They did not open the hood or the toolbox once during the whole
weekend. There were lots of cars there with owners flying drivers in etc.
And professional motorsports teams from LMP etc. Parker comes to mind,
fielded a camaro.

Anyway, the level of competition at the pointy end of chumpcar is very
high. 95% race on reliability. The top 5% race on speed. Lots of industry
professionals putting teams of guys together. Takes a massive effort on car
prep, race management and driving skill to pull off a win like that.

[MBZ] suspension flood

2017-10-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had some sitting around in the old TD and poured it into the SEC but I
need more since the tank was mostly empty and the bottle was not full.
I look at FCP and it is $6.99/qt for Febi which is a good price.  The
old stuff I had was the blue bottle, which I think was Febi too, it was
"genuine" I think when I got it years ago.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/Mercedes~Benz-parts/560SEC/Hydraulic-System-Fluid?year=1989=624=20=1

So I look on Amazon to see about getting free shipping, and its like
$14-$20/liter.  hmm.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_14?url=search-alias%3Daps=mercedes+hydraulic+fluid=mercedes+hydra%2Caps%2C173=2H4BFEFC3T3SJ

I guess I need to order some from FCP but I need to add some other bits
to get free shipping.

Just to complicate things further...my cardiologist says to avoid carbonated

I mostly stick to icewater with the occasional beer or San Pellegrino pop (no

"First if you can't put together a single sentence starting with my name"

I think that is a whole crack pipe and some meth in the mix.

Re: [MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-10-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I've got the $500 E dizzel, I spent some $$ on a new wheel and half
decent tire for it, a rear brake light, and a window lift I need to put
in, and a door/seat switch.  Just noticed the rear door sill was
missing, will have to get one.  I started it Sunday, it was running a
bit rough, need to put something on it to see what codes it is
throwing.  It drives pretty well after changing the steering rack
bushings, and seemed to have good power once it wound up some.  I'll see
what's up with the AC, if it just needs some gas.  Will still try to
find a front valance for it, will get some Okie chrome in the meantime
to hold it together. Not a bad car really, and for the money not a bad
deal.  I might keep it.

He is now Dan W210 Man. Or S210 to be more correct (the "S" delineating wagon).

As I said at the time, that is a testament to the 210 series cars.  ‎They may
be milk toast boring, but they are well proven, and reliable. AND it's not a

Who will be looking for a 210 soon.

Turkey Hill. Not exactly an appetizing and memorable name for ice cream,
but they make a variation that has no HFCS, I think it is their "All
Natural" flavors.
