$100 bid increments?
Who would bid $100 for that scrap?
At least the molten Delorean I found last year had a $60 opening bid, which I
still thought was too high.

Peltier devices are much less efficient than heat pumps. But are much
cheaper, smaller, quieter. Might even be less effective than the
adsorbtion cycle (ammonia/hydrogen) RV refrigerators, which also won't cool
things from warm very well, but can maintain cool temperatures just fine.

Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!

2018-04-19 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Commentary there says the woman WAS wearing a seatbelt, and the shrapnel
WAS contained.

But...

A seatbelt can only do so much, and the window WAS right there next to
her. Also, the fan shrapnel
was contained, but the horrendous vibration caused other parts of the
engine nacelle to fracture and
fragment into the 500MPH slipstream. So, not "shrapnel" damage so much as
"debris" damage, not
that it matters to the injured/killed. Also, behind the wing, not on the
rotational axis of the turbine.

Horrible accident, no matter how you slice it.

[MBZ] OM603 Serpentine Belt Tensioner Fun

This afternoon I took a couple hours and installed some new parts on The
White Whale. First I took this video to show the bad shock on the serp.
belt tensioner.

https://youtu.be/OVPPmF94UNA

Installed the new shock (Stabilus, same brand as the old shock), repeated
the test.

https://youtu.be/efSfZ1nN474

Here's the amount of serp. belt vibration with the new shock and the
original solid pulley.

https://youtu.be/2zkNA4QkeHY

Now with the new OAP clutched pulley.

https://youtu.be/yfUouS4WBFk

Very little difference in the amount of serp. belt vibration. Worth $35
for the clutch and special tool?

Re: [MBZ] This is NICE

2018-04-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I think that price is crack territory for all the stuff wrong with the car,
and I'll bet that an inspection would find more.

Seepage from the trans pan - warped pan?.
-The tires are good but nearly 10 years old
-The inside has a bit of a musty smell. All seals seem good and there are
no water leaks from the sunroof so I am assuming it is just age.
-The front lower ball joints will need replacement. No noise but the boots
are torn.
- The turbo charger does not boost very well. We have removed the air
cleaner and checked shaft play, it has no play at all. It does not burn
oil. After having the local Mercedes dealership go over it they believe the
boost bypass valve is stuck in the open position.
- The wood grain on the passenger side is starting to come up.
- Passenger rear power window does not work.
- The odometer does not work, the tachometer does not work. All of the
other gauges, speedometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure, coolant temp, and
warning lights do work. No warning lights are present currently.
- Radio does not work.

I second Malwarebytes.
I have used it on several Macs for years following the recommendation of some
Mac experts from Silicon Valley. I have it set to scan hourly and have not had
a problem.
Good Luck.

None. While there are viruses out there for Macs, they’re pretty rare. I
would download the free copy of Malwarebytes and set up a schedule in your
calendar for it to run weekly or monthly.

You can buy AV software for your Mac, but in my opinion based on almost 30
years of Mac use, I wouldn’t waste the money. I don’t.

I had a W126 that the PO apparently had reused the caliper mounting bolts
rather than using new, and failed to use any Loctite. Result was the bolt
backed out! That sure caused a clunk.

I was driving the SEC this afternoon and noticed a little clunk on
breaking at LF wheel. At first I thought it was something in the
suspension but then it got to where I had to push the break petal a bit
to get the breaks to engage, felt like left front, and then it would
sorta clunk and then grab. I'm thinking either the caliber is starting
to cease up or the break hose is maybe getting bad and needs to be
replaced, like it takes some extra pressure to squeeze past the hose if
it is sorta collapsing.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Don't tempt me.

The ball joints would not be that bad but while doing those might as
well renew the other rubber bits in there too, which could get a bit
spendy.  But if it just the boots they could last a while longer if not
bad at this point.

No it just started.  I was at first thinking the guide rod mount but
then this thing with having to push the pedal a bit to get it to engage
says brake, probably hose, and it got progressively worse as I drove
this afternoon, which would not be the bushing. I was thinking of a
bunch of little stuff I need to order for this car, I guess I should
just do that soon.

I have one from a yard sale that works well; especially if you put cold food or

Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!

2018-04-19 Thread as.thompson--- via Mercedes
Interesting anecdote about the CFM 56 engine.

I flew the CFM 56 engine for the first time it was flown on any aircraft when I
was an Air Force test pilot at Edwards AFB in 1977.

Here is a reference from Wikipedia; "The engine flew for the first time in
February 1977 when it replaced one of the four Pratt & Whitney JT8D
 engines on the McDonnell
Douglas YC-15 , an
entrant in the Air Force's Advanced Medium STOL Transport
 (AMST)
competition.[17]
 Soon
after, the second CFM56 was mounted on a Sud Aviation Caravelle
 at the SNECMA flight
test center in France. This engine had a slightly different configuration with
a long bypass duct and mixed
exhaust flow,[nb 1]
 rather
than a short bypass duct with unmixed exhaust
 flow.[nb 2]
 It was
the first to include a "Thrust Management System" to maintain engine trim.[nb
3] [18]
”

Back then, they had no customers for the engine. Now, follow-on versions of
those engines are everywhere.

Sometimes it just boils down to "sh*t happens" despite the best parts and
practices humanly possible. The fact is that flying is extremely safe,
aircraft are incredibly durable, engines are extremely reliable, and most
pilots are pretty damn good at what they do, US pilots anyway. While the FAA
might be a PITA about stuff, all the above is mostly due to that I would think,
and the fact that the guy/gal flying the plane up in that pointy part is always
the first one to arrive at whatever destination is (un)scheduled, so they have
a bit of self-interest in the process.

Sometimes it just boils down to "sh*t happens" despite the best parts
and practices humanly possible.  The fact is that flying is extremely
safe, aircraft are incredibly durable, engines are extremely reliable,
and most pilots are pretty damn good at what they do, US pilots anyway.
While the FAA might be a PITA about stuff, all the above is mostly due
to that I would think, and the fact that the guy/gal flying the plane up
in that pointy part is always the first one to arrive at whatever
destination is (un)scheduled, so they have a bit of self-interest in the

I agree that she was killed by the shrapnel, then further beaten by the
slip stream. IIRC, those pilots get frequent simulator training on handling
just such an event. If they can keep their head when it happens in real
life, they should be fine. However, that is not a given since we're "all
human". I had one incident of oil pressure loss just after take off that I

Cruise speed at 35,000 ft is normally .8 Mach which translates to

"around"

550 kph airspeed. [Mach is the speed of sound through air. Air density at
35,000 ft can vary with temp.]
Point being, being suddenly thrust into a 500+ mph slipstream, after
absorbing massive injury, would be further injury.

Makes a strong case for keeping your seat belt fastened, regardless of
where you or the airplane are located.

My understanding is that one lady got sucked out up to her waist,
passengers pulled her back in, but she died later. I don't think

anyone

else got sucked out. The first report (cabin crew report to flight

deck)

of any bad news is almost always worse than reality, or interpreted

with

a

bias toward the worst case by the receiver, so "partially sucked out

the

I don't think the implication was that the engine hadn't be touched in 18 years.
In fact after some additional thought they probably said that the plane was 18

2018-04-19 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
What I discovered at least here, and I am sure at other places as well is they
are going to the auctions and buying cars there that were traded in. I see lots
of cars there that are not wrecked at all and look pretty good and have dealer
stock tags in them. A year or so ago I ran across a 96 e300 that I used to own
in the pnp. I sold it to a buddy of mine who did a bunch of work to it then
sold it to a coworker of his. A little while later he said she had to have a
new radiator put in it and a bunch of other work. She then wanted to get rid of
it and asked if I wanted it back. Price was more than I wanted to spend so I
passed. I then saw it at pnp with a dealer stock tag in it. This was actually a
customer of mine. She must have traded it in there. I knew the car well and
knew it was in good shape mechanically. Had I known it was at my customer I
could have bought it from them before it went to auction.

So is there anything valuable about the Sportline? I’m sort of intrigued by
the car since it’s a stick and a Sportline, but being a 190 is sort of a turn
off.

This guy wants me to call him today about the car, but I also think he wants it
gone by next week, and there’s no way I could get it moved out by then unless
Andrew went up and got it and parked it at his place.

Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!

2018-04-19 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
More to the point, I suspect a design problem -- the cowling is supposed to
contain a thrown fan blade, and it appears that just one blade came loose or
broke off.

The engine may have had quite a few parts replaced, but some of it is indeed 18
years old. I don't know what maintenance schedules are for modern high bypass
engines, but they are very robust and require much less repair than the older
ones. Needless to say, failed engines are a huge headache and I don't think
Southwest cheats on maintaining them.

If the failure was indeed a fatigue failure as the NTSB has stated, it's a
materials/inspection problem, not a maintenance problem unless the blades were
removed and re-installed by Southwest.

CFM56 engines have a good reputation, unlike the GE engines on the DC-10.
