You amaze me Philip.

Remind me again of your background, how all this fits in with driving
trucks, et al.

I don't know enough about the system, but it sounds like there are
two pieces and the fried controller is connected to the distant
part?

This gets into "network system TVS". When two or more items are
connected to power _and_ connected to each other there is
opportunity for trouble in any transient event, especially to the
points where the two are connected together.

I would make _sure_ the two parts are getting power from the same
panel. And be sure there is only one ground bond point for the
two of them. And be sure the ground isn't compromised but is
connected ONLY to the building ground rod.

This will eliminate a vast majority of the potential problems from
a transient.

Next I would put over voltage protections. Gas tubes are really
sturdy, but kinda slow. Diodes are fast, but not so rugged. I
would put in both. I suspect there isn't a pre-made TVS for that
control line, but if the voltage of the controls signals is
known, then suitable gas tubes and diodes can be added. So if it
is a 5 volt control signal, clamping at 12 V is probably about
right.

If it is ethernet, including POE, but not HD-BaseT, an L-Com
ELP-CAT6 will do nicely. Gas tube and diode protection between
each pair and to ground.

L-Com may make something suitable.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Towing capability of a F-150 EV prototype

2019-07-25 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
GNW fails to allow for the use of plug in cars for much other than replacing
golf carts for puttering around town. No way these would function in the cold
and exceedingly long roads with limited fuel stops, let alone roadside 240v
plugs. Recent pricing for electrons hovers around $0.20 Kw/h up here. Diesel
or NatGas power the grid, as much as it might be thought of that way. I did
see one Leaf the other day. Not much in the way of Priapusi.

The price of road #2 is lower than standard unleaded. By around a dime or
less, but good enough. Lots of big trucks to use it, and I think there is even
a refinery that makes it, instead of shipping it to Cherry Point in WA.
Whatcom Country (where the BP and Philips refineries live) is voting to limit
their future production, so that fuel prices will rise for the social justice
voters and will impact prices here.

The ’74 SL has the range of a Tesla, the SD and SDL almost twice that. Sadly,
there are no qualified mechanics here to keep them on the road.

[MBZ] High Capacity PATA Laptop Hard Drive

2019-07-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I believe this was part of the discussion regarding the STAR C3 diagnostic
systems’ laptops, as in finding a 2.5” IDE/PATA hard drive large enough for the
OS as well as the STAR software, whether it be running natively or in a VM.

Finding an IDE/PATA in a 2.5' size in a capacity above 200GB was, at one time
in the recent past, cost prohibitive. I stumbled across an eBay seller in China
who is selling open box 200GB and 320GB IDE/PATA drives for around $30:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/WD-320GB-WD3200BEVE-5400RPM-PATA-IDE-EIDE-2-5-Laptop-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive/383033092556

I just ordered one for my C3 setup. I’ll preserve the original setup so as not
to risk damage, but I’ve got disk images of the VM that I can load onto the new
larger drive easily. That means my STAR software will run natively and not in a
VM, so hopefully I’ll see a performance increase.

For $32 I’ll roll the dice and see how it works out.

The guy with the homemade rig in the video (auto alternator/inverter) used a

Re: [MBZ] OT -mufflers for B engines

2019-07-25 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
With any engine you have noise sources from engine noise, such as reciprocating
components and combustion, as well as from exhaust gasses and cooling air. Air
cooled engines are the worst, as they have no water jacket to cut down on some
of the noise.

You can reduce noise by covering or shrouding the engine, but then you have to
assure cooling air flow. Exhaust noise can be dealt with through larger
mufflers.

It’s not just an issue of exhaust, there are other players in the game.

The 1975 had tiny exhaust, maybe 1.5", and flowed plenty for 60hp.
I was moving in that direction when looking at Summit for Walker mufflers, was

Re: [MBZ] OT -mufflers for B engines

2019-07-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have a wood chipper with 10 HP Tecumseh, same noise issues. The real
problem is the engine runs at the governed limit all the time the machine
is operational, to have momentum power to chop and shred. It never idles
down to give the ears a rest.

My solution is to always wear ear protection. Single use foam ear plugs
plus head sets. Noise = Power = Progress... "Back to Work".

Generally speaking the bigger the mower, the better the muffler. I'd also look
at a generator muffler, especially one for a Honda generator, those are really
quiet.
Also in general small equipment mufflers are garbage, most are just a tin can
that contains a pipe with holes in. They really don't waste a penny on them...
If you really want it to be quiet I'd start with a small car muffler and adapt
it down.

And, only the first 5 train cars were filled with batteries. Progress is a
fragile thing.
The holly grail with EV machines is "battery". and a lot of big minds
and big money is chasing that holy grail, a lot of promises are made, and a
lot looks "promising", but not to the end of market by many steps.

I came across this, some time ago, perhaps those who pursue PI and Nukes
and Rocket Science can comment.

Seems some strong points are made regards final market and price.

I've found that ink lasts a good long time. I've even
added a few drops of water when I thought it was too
thick. I remember having a long handled pen it came
with a desk set. One fountain and the other a
ballpoint. They are long gone can't even think of when
I saw them last.

My mother used a long handled Shaeffer fountain pen, with green ink
exclusively for writing letters, etc. I still have a collection of various
colored inks in bottles, don't know if they are still good though.

I was going to say the same. I hope hotel units are cheap, otherwise theres
not much good to say about them.
Traveling in Europe a couple months ago I noticed all the hotels we stayed in
had mini-splits.

Now they're talking spring compressors...

Gage Dedor Place jack under LCA
undo upper control arm ball joint bolt. Smack ball joint with a hammer a
couple times, slowly lower jack and let ball joint fall springs will
fall out

Logan Thomas If you like
to live life on the edge that's probably the way to do it.
Gage Dedor It’s really not that
unsafe. I’ve had more issues with the oe style compressors either
shattering or slipping than I have doing it this way.

Well, it looks like this guy has some paramedic training, so that might
come in useful

This, to me, is the main bugaboo of electric vehicles: They're great for
around town, but not so much for cross-country trips.

I'll look at the newest gee-whiz machine and ask, "Can I make a 350 mile
trip with luggage without refueling?" More often than not, the answer
will be "no"...

[MBZ] OT: Towing capability of a F-150 EV prototype

2019-07-25 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
ELECTRIC VEHICLESFord F-150 video signals new electric pushPublished:
Thursday, July 25, 2019[image: All-electric Ford F-150 towing trains and
cars. Photo credit: Ford Motor Co.]

A prototype of an all-electric Ford F-150 is shown here towing more than
1.25 million pounds of rail cars and trucks during a test. Ford Motor Co.

Ford Motor Co. posted a splashy teaser video for a new electric F-150
truck, planting its flag in a largely uncharted market for electric
vehicles.

In the five-minute video , a
black electric F-150 prototype tows a chain of rail cars weighing a million
pounds. Then Ford loads 42 trucks onto that train, upping the weight to
1.25 million pounds, and does it again. The number winks at the fact that
the F-150 has been America's best-selling truck for each of the past 42
years.

While the towing ability may impress truckers, it also communicates that
Ford is serious about electrifying the F-150 — though a final product may
still be years away, if one arrives at all.

The video, posted Tuesday, is Ford's most explicit promise so far to
manufacture a pure-electric truck. Ford plans to roll out a hybrid
gas-electric F-150 next year, and in April it invested $500 million in
Rivian, a startup electric truck-maker. At the end of the video, the words
flash, "The all-electric Ford F-150 is coming."

The message is targeted directly at truck buyers and echoes what Tesla Inc.
did with its speedy Roadster a decade ago — demonstrate that an electric
steed can in some ways outperform its gasoline counterpart.

"This is an area where an electric vehicle can show a performance benefit
that is key to its constituent customers," said Tim Grejtak, an
energy-storage analyst for Lux Research Inc. "It worked for Tesla. Now Ford
is trying to make a similarly bold statement."

Electric cars excel in towing because they have ample low-end torque, a
measure of the vehicle's ability to accelerate at low RPM levels. The
electric motor provides immediate traction to the wheels, without the
intermediaries of combustion and cylinders.

The towing capacity of the most powerful F-150 currently on the market, the
3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo-charged V6, is 13,200 pounds. The electric
prototype pulled more than 94 times that amount.

The video had plenty of advertising elements to win over truckers: Five men
in jeans, work boots and baseball caps pumped their fists on the sidelines
as Linda Zhang, who is the chief F-150 engineer, piloted the truck silently
forward. An electric motor makes almost no noise.

"Listen to the motor," one of the men said.

"What motor?" another replied.

The heavy train cars were only pulled for 1,000 feet, which may show the
limitations of the prototype's battery, Grejtak noted. Batteries prices
have been dropping, but their weight, power and cost are delicate
trade-offs for automakers.

While Ford gave strong signs of its intentions, the Dearborn, Mich.-based
company took care to add caveats.

"The F-150 all-electric is towing far beyond any production truck's
published capacity in a one-time short event demonstration. Never tow
beyond a vehicle's towing capacities," stated a disclaimer on the screen.

It also gave no deadline. Ford will deliver the electric truck "in the
coming years," Zhang said.

But possibly not greatly so.
The TSC description gave the EER IIRC, not the SEER.
