Re: [MBZ] oil grade for m119

2019-12-04 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
No, they came with a 2.24 in the US. 2.65 in Europe. The 500e came with a
2.82, but it starts in 2nd gear. The e420 starts in 1st gear due to the
tall 2.24 diff. Switch that to a 2.82 and you suddenly have a lot of wheel
torque 0-50 mph or so in 1st gear. Feels a bit like an electric car off the
line. Doesnt make much racket; just goes. 11:1 compression.

I have a 2.65 lsd in the wagon now. It will be fun to see if it is traction
limited with the new 606 turbo setup.

Our '94 E420 had a lot of "get up and go", too. I once stopped in the
road by the Los Alamos Golf Course (with no one else around!) and jammed
the go pedal to the floor to show Shirley what it would do. Impressive.

Is the the 2.82 diff the standard ratio?

No, I am not.

What I am saying is he did not want to trust a Sprinter to a driver he
does not know exhaustively and who, driving something not his own, would
not care about taking good care of it.

The finish on the one van I saw looked good. I don't know about the
others. I think his has the EcoBoost V6, but I am not sure.

They are most likely less expensive than Sprinters.

Folks,

I got my Walmart online ordered 4 x 5 qt Mobil 1 0-40 weight motor oil,
yesterday and today they were saying 11 December delivery so I guess there
is no shortage!

Hey, I have a bunch of 123 cars, mostly wagons, ranging from rusted out hulks
to a ratty limousine, stretched in California, to a couple of quite nice 300td

Where if anywhere is the market

All are in Athens, Georgia

Most of the ratty ones belonged to a good friend who died a few weeks ago and
they are all on my property

I was also already selling this iveco rollback for him which is super
rusty and has some bad clutch hydraulics as well as a failing clutch disc

And there is a spare not rusty iveco truck

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/793626334428215/

There seems to be little market for this junk DESPITE the allegedly $30k 123
wagon

Lol, I got hit in my old 87 300D in the driver's door by a work van (Chevy 3500
series, fully loaded). Broke the starter off the engine, punched the strut up
through the still attached mount, bent the strut 45 degrees, and pushed the
front of the driver's door in over a foot.

The other three doors open and close, although the front passenger door is now
half an inch proud of the frame.

I put it in park (engine still running and car still rolling under power), took
the seat belt off, and climbed over the console and exited via the front
passenger door.

Quite the ride.

My only injury was skin scrapped off the back of my right hand, apparently by

morning. I did feel my brain bounce around a little inside my skull during the
acceleration from the impact, but not the slightest sign of concussion.

Overall, I'm really, really pleased with the crash safety of the Prius.

The big frustration of all this? The other guy wouldn't talk to State Farm and

Subrogation is a wonderful thing in a case like this. I’ve had two situations
where the person who cause the accident’s insurer refused to communicate, for
whatever reason I have no idea. In both cases I covered the deductible, and in
both cases I got reimbursed after 4-6 months when my insurer went after their
insurance company.

I was confident that I would in both cases, as they were clearly the fault of
the other driver.

Re: [MBZ] El Mercado de Wal oel

2019-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, the Business membership if you’re not using their branded credit card is
rarely a good deal for the average consumer. We got talked into it a few years
ago and ended up changing back to a regular membership. In fairness to Costco
they did refund the difference back to us when we renewed at the lower level.
They claim you’ll come out ahead on the business membership, but at the time
they didn't give credit for gasoline purchases, and that was the dealbreaker
for us. Without that gas money counting towards our annual vig, it didn’t work
out.

Costco is like a lot of retailers, where if you expect to get ahead you’ve got
to really do your due diligence. This is something Mitch excels at due to his
beancounter mindset (no diss there, consider it a compliment!) There have been
some consumer web sites that have done comparison shopping and found that with
some products it’s actually cheaper to buy it elsewhere. I think toilet paper
was one of the items. That being said, the Kirkland branded stuff is very good
and rarely disappoints while being very cost effective over other brands. I
bought some Kirkland cashews and pistachios today, and the price for both was
nowhere near when they cost elsewhere in smaller quantities.

In that same vein, I’ve found that meat is rarely a bargain at Costco. We have
a local farmer’s market that supplies most of the major restaurants in the
area, and I go there for meat. For $100 I can walk out with a couple of whole
beef tenderloins and a pork tenderloin that would cost me twice that at Costco
or a local grocer. They also have a selection of produce that would make your
eyes water.

I hadn't even thought of them in nearly five years, until my boss told me why
she joined Costco.
Costco talked her into upgrading after she took the Groupon.

Unfortunately her Executive Business membership merely entitles me to buy an
employee card for the same $60 I'd pay for an individual card.

Re: [MBZ] El Mercado de Wal oel

2019-12-04 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Most of it's at a good, but not fantastic price.
This week I saved about $3 on 2 kilos of chocolate chips, $2 on a 3lb pack of
bacon, $3 on a 50pk of instant cocoa, and $30 on 3 big bags of grain free dog
food. And I saved $0.70 on 7 gallons of gas.
I heard great things about Kirkland bacon, but it's no better than Wright's,
and last week's sale on Wright's was very near Costco pricing. If I hadn't
stocked up on olive oil last month I could have saved another $10. And yeast is
about half what I normally pay.

But I had to drive 80 miles round trip, and the freeway is on the opposite side
of town from Costo so I have to drive through E. Lansing to get there. Sam's
Club is right by the freeway, and there's a Sam's in Battle Creek which is only
52 miles round trip.

The dog food is made by Diamond, like Taste of the Wild, but it has less meat
than TOTW. Even allowing for the quality difference, I figure a 35lb bag is $10
better than I can do elsewhere. If it weren't for the dog food it wouldn't be
worth the trip at all. All that changes if a warehouse is conveniently located
for you.
I do wish I knew about the Groupon deal for a Costco membership when we were
talking about Costco glasses a couple months ago. A set of eyeglasses could pay
for the membership.

Years ago when I lived in Northern Tribal Territories of Pakistan and
Afghanistan we formed a group that hunted wild pigs with spears. The spears
were forged from Bedford truck spring and firmly fitted to 8 ft shafts..
I can tell you from personal experience, watch your selected pig carefully
and kill it on the first thrust, or it will hurt you badly. It was not a
hunt for the meek.
I quit after one hunt partner lost a leg, then died by bleeding out. It was
a long way to any serious medical help. Muslim area, so it was only "kill
and release", no eating pork.

All I can speak to about reliability of a Sprinter is that they seem to REALLY
hold value well. I feed my addiction and desire for one by stalking them on
CL. Even a high miles 2004 example in reasonable condition brings $10k or
more. I do not see the civilian models come available, but that might be due
them being snapped up for RV conversion since they are not abused like a work
truck. I also do not see many of the people hauler sort (long, tall, lots of
seats) Maybe those go to auction instead of CL

A fellow I know from having my heavy truck work done at The Shop in
Moriarty has a diesel Sprinter, though I do not know which year. He and
his wife have been driving it all over the country doing deliveries for
more than the past year (I forget when he got it).

When he wanted to expand his fleet and hire drivers to drive the other
vehicles, he could not depend on the quality of the drivers and opted
for new gasolin Ford Transit vans. He and one of the guys at The Shop
took the insides apart and fully insulated them and securely installed
E-track in the back for securing cargo.

Why don't you just join Costco? I don't know what they offer in the USA
but here in Canada, if you buy the "Executive" membership, you get a
percentage of every dollar spent back. It has always covered our cost of
renewal. My good wife renewed this morning and paid the annual fee and
got $50 or more in cash back as well from the cheque they had sent us.
She buys things like paper towel and TP there as well as many other
things. We get some meat there. We have bought eyeglasses there and I
got my hearing aides from them. My laptop computer came from Costco.
Plus we have ordered things online to be delivered, like a mattress and
boxspring. Lots of good quality things at reasonable prices and an
unbeatable guarantee. Does not seem to matter what you want to return or
when, they smile and take it back. Plus, electronic stuff like the
laptop come with additional warranty provided by Costco. We must have
been members for 20 years or more. No regrets.

Re: [MBZ] Sprinter Reliability

2019-12-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
At minimum, that’s correct. The Ody did the job with 4 adults, two kids in car
seats and two 80LB service dogs, but my big Goldendoodle pup will be much
larger at over 100LBs which wouldn’t leave much room for me in the back. The
Sprinter can be configured with as many seats as necessary or have seats
removed to accommodate 2 crates for the pet puppies. Last summer when we took
the Ody to the lake with the stand-up paddle boards, gear and provisions for
the day, there was no room for me. Luckily, a friend was also able to go, so I
had a seat in her car. A Sprinter could swallow the gear with no problem, and
with the fuel economy of the Diesel engine, it would cost nearly the same to
operate.

[MBZ] oil grade for m119

2019-12-04 Thread Karl W via Mercedes
My father is reliving his misspent youth in our e420 with the 2.82 diff
this week and noticed the oil pressure is low at idle. It is only halfway
down the stick but I figured I would send him to get it changed. What oil
do you guys run in these v8s? I am thinking 10w40 due to the cool 50 degree
weather we are having, rather than 15-50 or whatever.

Valvoline instant oil change did not have a filter for it, so I sent him
driving around indy shops as my mechanic is not an "instant" kind of guy.
As far as I know he is still out there, dusting motorcycles at traffic
lights until the rear end breaks loose.

trapper. I would say we bring him in roughly every 18 months or so. He’ll
easily take 6-8 in a night, which is enough to thin the herd, so to speak.

The problem is landowners treating them like game animals instead of vermin.
If you can make good money charging people to hunt pigs, that money goes away
if pigs are actually depleted in the process.

Copart pickups are 8-5, M-F, unless you arrange to have them leave the car in
the front yard and give you the gate code to get into the front yard. IIRC you
have about a week before the $20/day starts up.

Can Klebbie buy on Friday, have them leave it in the pickup yard the next
Friday, and avoid fees if he gets it over the weekend? Might be worth calling
the site and asking. My local sites are pretty good about helping you avoid
storage.

Mitch.

Hogs are all over Texas, they tear up everything and can be really
nasty.  My ex-BIL had them tearing up his yard in a Houston area housing
development, he was itching to put some meat on the smoke but no weapons
allowed to be discharged in the neighborhood.  I have not had any but my
neighbor went out and shot them and said the meat was really tasty, esp
after acorn season, so not sure where the writer got that misinformation
about the taste.  Probably dono nuffin bout smoke.

Maybe. Depends on how long after the auction before it has to be
picked up. My weekend is pretty busy, but I might be able to fit
it in. And the trailer is unloaded at the moment.
