Having run generators on propane, I'm not sure I would describe the

Re: [MBZ] OT - Home Standby Generator

2020-04-02 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Same principle would apply; I would think you dont need as much generating
capacity if your max power draw is less. Smaller generators are cheaper and
burn less fuel, requiring smaller tanks and less capital up front per hour
of burn time. Of course a separate panel is not free, but we have a
subpanel we could easily have configured this way.

Just thinking out loud. Fundamentally we dont need half the crap we
typically run. My buddy's family spends weeks on the coast in Norway in
cabins with no power every summer. They pack in propane for the fridge and
the stove, burn candles and bathe in the fjord. 15 min walk to the nearest
road. When you come back, you know you went somewhere.

Hospitals have red outlets in all the rooms showing what will be supported
by the generators when the power fails. Seems like you would want a
separate panel with critical bits hooked up to it with generator backup,
and everything else can go offline.

I should think you would run the thing long enough to charge up some
batteries and then turn it off. Who wants to listen to that sort of thing
24h/day anyway? I mean, what good is a power failure if you can't enjoy
the silence? Get a propane fridge and run it off the same tank.

Speaking of which, I really need some of those old style wick lamps. I
guess the oil ones can use mantles also, which I did not know about until
now somehow and must increase the light output tremendously. Just have to
figure out how to keep them from breaking in earthquakes. I don't want the
gas ones because they hiss.

At least with propane your exhaust will smell like flowers.

[MBZ] R129/SL500 Front Shocks

2020-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Replaced the front shocks (Bilsteins) on the wife’s SL500 this afternoon. Took
me all of maybe 45 minutes to do both.

So I didn’t have to pull or compress the springs, I put a jack stand under the
“A” arm where the bottom ball joint is. Fit the cradle on my cast jack stands
perfectly. With the suspension compressed by the weight of the car, I removed
the top nut on the shock rod and then jacked the car up maybe an inch or so to
lower the A arm and let the shock rod come out of the top mount. From there I
removed the three bolts holding the shock to the steering knuckle, removed it,
put the new one in place with new bolts, and tightened everything up.

Front of the car definitely sits higher. The old shocks did not extend the same
amount as the new ones, that is, there wasn’t enough pressure to force the rods
out to full travel, which tells me they were kaput. I drove it around the
neighborhood and couldn’t tell a difference, but I’m sure the wife will when
the times comes for her to drive the car again.

Guess I probably need to replace the rears now, too.

There are so many cats out there if it kicks off just go get another cat.

level of thyroid hormones, which is also done at least annually just to get
levels and assess their drug treatment and dosage if that’s being done.

I had to go into work on Monday on short notice, so the wife takes Kitty to the
vet. Wife has not takes an animal to the vet in easily 10 years, if that. Kitty
goes with me every time, she’s calm, doesn’t vocalize, etc., etc. This no doubt
stressed her. The vet isn’t allowing people into the building, so it’s like a
drive up/drop off thing and the doctor calls you once they see the animal and
discusses treatment, tests and so forth. Even more stressful.

So no call for a good 20 minutes, maybe more. Wife is wondering what’s up. Get
a call from vet, daughter of our original vet who has since retired and sold
off his practice. She says Kitty has had a “cardiac event” while they were
trying to draw blood. Said she cried out and slumped over. Doesn’t think Kitty
will see lunch time. They get a line in her and are putting fluids into her and
giving her oxygen. Wife is freaking out.

Vet says they want to keep her over night. Nope. If she’s stressed and close to
crossing the rainbow bridge, we don’t want it happening in a kennel in the back
of the vet’s office. Vet says she wants to keep her until at least lunch time,
when she’ll call us and give us an update.

I get home, wife is all worked up, understandably. Vet calls. Kitty is resting
quietly and responsive. I’m coming to get her.

I get Kitty home and she’s clearly out of sorts. We walk around the house and
refamiliarize, despite her being a little wobbly. Normal behavior after being
out of the house. She gets a tin of her favorite turkey and gravy and goes to
sleep in her favorite place on the couch.

Vet calls later in the day and wants to know if she’s OK. Tells me she probably
won’t make it to the next day.

She’s sitting on my desk in front of my keyboard right now, asleep. Faced Death
and kicked it’s ass. She’s definitely not 100%, but close. Based on behaviors
we’ve seen in other cats we’ve owned it’s likely she suffered some sort of mild
stroke from the stress. Her vocalizations have changed, which is weird. She
sometimes sits and stares, like she’s forgotten why she was there. She’s still
doing all of her daily stuff, like walking around the pool with me every
morning and taking a few drinks from it.

So it’s unlikely we’ll mess with the nuclear stuff. We’ll let Nature take it’s
course until she’s in pain or can’t function comfortably then we’ll help her
go. You hate like heck to lose a pet, but when I think about it I also think
about when the wife rescued her 16+ years ago from the side of the road in a
thunderstorm, all 8 ounces of her. Vet said she probably wouldn’t make it to
the next day then, but like now, she’s not going to let someone dictate when
she goes, dang it.

go. You hate like heck to lose a pet, but when I think about it I also think
about when the wife rescued her 16+ years ago from the side of the road in a

the next day then, but like now, she’s not going to let someone dictate when
she goes, dang it.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** ? Aeronca

2020-04-02 Thread MG via Mercedes
I would have to ask my BIL about the details. In
any case it is all in pieces. The wings are wood
and partially still covered. Hasn't been flyable
since probably the 70's when he bought it as a
student at Embry Riddle. It was in his garage
since then. Lots of boxes of all kinds of stuff,
including the complete repair manuals in a counter
stand. Must be about a foot thick in the binding.
The engine was a small like 65 hp continental also
in pieces.

He took it apart with the intention of rebuilding
it and then life got in the way when he went to
work for Delta up in Atlanta.

How often do you have a full load?

What is your normal load?

Is the 1.5 - 2 gallons/hour the no-/low-load fuel consumption?
400 gallons / 1.5 - 2 gallons/hr = 200 - 267 hours.

Would an additional smaller, less fuel consumptive generator be suitable
for low loads, with switching to the larger generator for high loads be
worth the trouble?

Would you do like Shirley and I did when we lived south of Calhan, CO,
and were our own power company, and turn the generator off when you go
to sleep?

Re: [MBZ] 560 temp sender etc.

2020-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Temp sender should be on top of the engine, probably around the thermostat. I
don't recall where they are on a M117(?) but that’s a pretty common place for
most of their gassers.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but the later W126 chassis cars had electronic
speedos, I thought.

The “mold” which it certainly could be, if white, is a common issue with
clusters of that vintage. Moisture causes the surface of the plastic to break
down and you get the white spotty appearance. I don’t believe there’s a fix.

I think I’m going to borrow a buddy’s powerwasher and blast it underneath and

30-33psi MAP (16-19 boost) is quite attainable.
87 octane recommended, but that requires a lot of knock retard.
When it gets warmer than 50 deg outside I run 93 octane in it.

Wow, that sounds like a good alternative to the noisy generators. Roughly
how many hours of operation per 100 gals of propane going full bore?

Re: [MBZ] OT - Home Standby Generator

2020-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Propane. No natural gas close by - at least not any closer than about two
streets away, unfortunately.

Kohler. 24RCL, 24kW Toyota industrial engine powered water cooled 1800 RPM set.
Set on a concrete pad with a sound attenuated enclosure. 200 amp automatic
transfer switch. Everything in the house will be powered by this.

No Generac. Had I done an air cooled set, I would have considered Generac, but
I want an 1800 rpm water cooled unit as they’re far quieter, have lower fuel
consumption per kW, and last a lot longer. They are more expensive, easily
30%-40% more than air cooled. Air cooled is pretty much anything below 22kW and
runs at 3600 rpm. Loud, sucks fuel and has much higher maintenance costs and
requirements. Longevity is far less as well.

Now I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to set up a fuel supply. Might end
up with a 500 gallon LP tank in the front yard and some directional drilling
done to get the line under the driveway and around the back of the house. The
alternative is a couple of 120 gallon tanks in the back yard, but with this
unit using 4 gallons per hour at full load that doesn’t provide a very long run
time in the event of an extended outage. Actual consumption will probably be
more like 1-1/2 to 2 gallons per hour, but even then that only gives me roughly
four days of run time if the tanks were full (assume 80% capacity when their
full, or around 100 gallons.)

Re: [MBZ] 1993 turbo diesel

2020-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, and if they’re getting ready to let go, the owner will know it as the oil
consumption gets crazy stupid, like a quart every 500 miles or less.

I’m pretty well convinced that the engines still on the road are past the
grenade stage unless they’ve been garage queens and rarely driven. As with the
350SDL I had, it’s near impossible to tell if the engine has been rebuilt or
repaired unless you’ve got service records. If it was replaced, sure, as it
won’t match the original serial number, but if it was rebuilt there’s no way of
knowing.

[MBZ] OT - Home Standby Generator

2020-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Pulled the trigger on my whole house standby generator project today. Gave the
dealer the go-ahead and will be signing papers and sending out a deposit check
tomorrow.

Had to have the “prepper” conversation with the wife this morning, making sure
she understood that when a natural disaster occurs and we're the only ones in
the neighborhood with electricity, AC, lights, refrigeration, etc. that we’re
not an arm of the American Red Cross. Tough decision to make, but you gotta
draw the line somewhere. She’s on board with it so onward and upward, so to
speak.

It will take 4-6 weeks for permitting so nothing is going to happen right away.

Got the jump on the hurricane season work, as people will start getting freaky
about that come May or so (hurricane season is June-November).

Don't know about Volts, but most of the Spark buybacks were "customer
doesn't like driving an EV so we bought it back when we got tired of
his/her bitching".

It's probably more likely with a Volt that there was something wrong that
the dealer tech couldn't find. GM then thought they fixed it and put it
back on the market. How much do you trust the GM tech center?

As Mitchell said - speed. Red Hamilton has averaged over 230mph in SARL
races with an O-320 engine (150HP stock - his is not stock).
The Tailwind is for speed, the Woody's Pusher is for low and slow sight
seeing and photos, the Cessna is for load hauling, and something to fly
while I'm building. Once the two projects are flying, the Cessna will
probably be replaced by something that can fly up-side-down.
