Re: [MBZ] $4K for a 1979 450SL with 40K Original Miles

2020-05-04 Thread Clay via Mercedes
My indy had one of those I assisted him finding a new home.

Belonged the man’s wife, who left him a widower at least a dozen years back.
He stored it, as his daughters has fond memories of riding with mom when it was
new and they were small. Particular daughter married and had kids, convinced
Dad it would be great to fix up the SL. He said by all means, go right ahead.
Off it goes to the indy who serviced the car since new when purchased from the
dealership. He gets into it and finds all manner of age issues, which daughter
tells him to fix a few of to make it road worthy once more. His bill grows to
$8k+, so he stops work and submits billing to date so he can keep on making
repairs.

Then it sits for a year at the shop, while father and daughter argue about who
is supposed to be footing the bill. By the time I got involved it was
drivable, looked like a well driven #4, but had a very long list of items still
wanting attention. I declined the purchase but did detail it and then put it
onto FleaBay, as well as local CL. IIRC, the thing sold for around $6k

Yes I think the v8 124 cars can be a good deal. I have seen many of them go
for a lot less than I paid in great shape with 100k or so. The wiring
harness etc seems to scare people off, but they are high quality and mostly
fixable.

2020-05-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We've started cooking a pound of bacon at a time, it stinks up the house, we
might as well get it over with, it keeps good in the fridge. That pound lasts
us 2 weeks. I do like having a little taste of bacon now and then.
If I manage to shoot a bunch of geese this fall I want to try making goose
pastrami. Its a big thing in the goose hunting set and the pictures look really
good. I'm going to ask my buddy Jon who owns "The Butt Stops Here" BBQ truck if
he'll smoke it for me. While I'm at it maybe I'll commission a few pounds of
bacon.

My response to the "salt enhances the flavor" is that SALT is a flavor, and
you've trained your taste buds to expect huge amounts.

Back before Campbell's was forced to reduce the amount they were using, they
had raised the level in their canned tomato soup to 4000 mg per serving,
roughly a TABLESPOON of salt per cup.  I'm not sure there is that much salt in
seawater.  I couldn't eat the stuff.

That much salt is for sure gonna cause the vast majority of people to retain
large amounts of water, not a good thing especially as we get older.

I used to date the top of my pound container of salt, just for fun.  Usually
lasted me a year or 18 months unless I made a lot of pasta.  These days I use
more than that because I've been salt preserving pork (bacon and Canadian bacon
mostly), but even then I don't use huge amounts, and I don't eat more than
three or four thin slices of bacon a couple of days a week.

2020-05-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think a lot of people are sodium poisoned to the point that they can't tell
how salty a lot of food is. These days I eat a lot less salt and I'm much more
sensitive to it. I pretty much can't eat in chain restaurants anymore.
We've been making our own pizza, I use the bread maker to mix the dough using
just my regular bread recipe. It goes into the fridge for awhile, cold dough
stretches easier. Then yesterday I decided to heavily flour and roll the dough
which worked way better than trying to hand stretch a sticky doughball. We
made spaghetti pizza and calzones, my 3 cup of flour bread recipe makes 3x 14"
pizzas which serves almost 3 meals for the 2 of us.

I, also, am concerned.  We made pizza the other day.  First bite and I thought
"My God this is salty!"
The package claimed 860mg, or 37% RDA,  per serving (slice).  It wasn't just
the toppings,
the crust itself was highly salted.

Never again, it was actively unpleasant.  There is a local restaurant whose
pizza is
like this.  I won't darken its door again, either.

Rule of thumb from back in the day is that 90% of the calorie intake of an
animal is "wasted" -- that is, does not appear as weight due to growth.

As I pointed out in my Ecology class all those years ago, animals MOVE, and
consume quite a bit of energy doing so, plus normal metabolism and maintaining
temperature uses calories too.

Plants don't thermo-regulate, and movement is quite limited, being driven by
the movement of water in soft tissues by and large. No brain, so no nervous
system burning glucose either!

What means in real terms is that a pound of meat takes a whole lot more
sunlight to make than a pound of high oil plant seeds.

Point taken on the "feeding the masses" -- eventually we will eat the planet
brown if the population keeps growing.

If you use Time Machine, and have installed the patches to allow El Capitan to
run, beware that the patches override the system's UUID, so all such systems
will share the same backup set, if they're using a common server. We have
his-and-hers Mac Pro 2,1's, and a single backup server for the whole house, so
I had to get a special version of the patch that had a different UUID for mine
just so that both systems could be backed up independently. (The backup server
is RAID, with on- and off-site rotating backup sets. Not something I wanted to
duplicate.)

Theres a Thai fusion place in Portsmouth, NH that has "Short ribs". Well the
first time we had them I didn't see the quotes and just ate them. The second

ordered them again. They're amazing, if I didn't know they weren't an animal
product I would never guess.Probably full of sodium and things I can't
pronounce but they're delicious...
Angie has surprised me by being really into the venison sausage I helped make.
We had some in red sauce over spaghetti the other night and she raved about it.
When I brought home 27# of sausage I wondered how we would eat it all before

There is a small mom and pop vegan restaurant near my home that has something

My cancer doc @ MD Anderson in Houston has sent me enough current

From what I've read, it is better tasting and more realistic texture, but
it's not any better for you than the real thing. Too much chemistry,
modified stuff, etc.

OK - so I looked it up:

*Are plant-based meats healthier?*

So what does the research say? According to O'Connor, Impossible and Beyond
burgers are made with somewhat similar combinations of plant products, such
as pea protein, coconut and canola oils, potato starch and rice protein, or
proteins from soy and potato. And overall, when compared with a beef
burger, the plant-based burgers are similar in protein and calories but
contain less saturated fat and no cholesterol—although they do have about
four times the amount of sodium of a beef burger.

However, there's been little research on the subject to date. While
research suggests that eating less red meat and more nuts, legumes, and
other plant-based foods has health benefits, such as lower chronic disease
risk and mortality, a recent *JAMA* report did not find conclusive
benefits. Frank Hu, chair of the nutrition department at the *Harvard T.H.
Chan School of Public Health* who worked on the report, said the
researchers were unable to determine whether processed burgers that rely on
soy and pea protein offer the same benefits as eating more legumes and less
red meat.

Hu said that studies are currently underway on whether plant-based burgers
are a healthier alternative to regular meat burgers independent of any
sides.

For now, Hu said he considers plant-based meats as "transitional foods" for
people trying to adopt a healthier diet. But, he noted, that depends on how
you eat it. For example, Hu explained that eating a plant-based hamburger
offers no dietary benefits if you pair it with a traditional burger's
typical sides: French fries and a soda.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Motherboard/Intel CPUs

2020-05-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> I wonder how much "upgrading" is just changing things to make them use more
> computing power for the same end.

Most 'upgrading' is just SW manufacturers refusing to compile for/test on older
OS's.
There is nothing I personally use, routinely, that wouldn't be just fine on my
old Pismo.
But, it was left in the dust long ago due to browser creep. Annual OS updates
are just
about guaranteed to make the problem worse.

CPU clock speeds plateaued years ago around the 3GHz mark. Architectures
fossilized
with AMD's 64-bit version of Intel's 1972 rendition of the Datapoint CPU. It
looks like GPUs
are beginning to ossify, a bit, as well.

My recent round of Mac Pro upgrades was driven almost entirely by VMware, which
refuses to run on the Mac Pro 2,1 CPU. Of course, it _used_ to run on that...
But not
the current version. I need it for work, so there I am. All this effort and
expense in order
to get exactly what I already had, basically, plus VMware.

I may be acquiring another 4,1 (or 5,1) from work, they just retired one and
nobody there
is a Mac-head. We shall see if that pans out, in time. (Looks like it might
already be running
Mojave. It might be the very system whose original video card I nabbed last
year, and which I'm
running right now.) It's being replaced by a new Mini with an external video
system of some sort,
the current tower system is just Too Expensive.

I didn't think a CC version was a 107 thing. The sheet metal is so involved in
the rear
seating and softtop stowage area that I don't think they could have done any
more, really,
than simply leave the frame and top out of the storage area. No improvement in
the
rear seating area, unlike the R113 CC variant, IIRC.

This car also has an ugly 86-87 third brake light added on.

Looks pretty normal to me. A tired interior and unspecified amounts of

Yes, it needs a new grille. But what else?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Blower resistor replacement

2020-05-04 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
The thing I have come to grips with is that I don’t go out trying to find
something plant based that tastes like something animal based. Make sense? I
know, no matter how fancy a plant based product is, it is not going to taste
like whatever it is supposed to be replacing. If I want sausage biscuits and
gravy, I will make SAUSAGE-from-a-pig gravy and not tell the sawbones.
There is a small mom and pop vegan restaurant near my home that has something
that is supposed to be what you would order if you wanted sweet and sour
chicken. They utilize this soy based stuff he sorta kinda developed, it’s
seasoned well, panko breaded and fried slightly and it is quite good when
swished around with the veggies and pineapple in the sweet and sour sauce he
makes…but it ain’t sweet and sour chicken. If you order that expecting it to
taste like chicken you will be disappointed, but it is really quite tasty.

My cancer doc @ MD Anderson in Houston has sent me enough current
science/studies that show quite impressively that men my age with my exact
stage of prostate cancer have benefited greatly from switching to a plant
based/whole food life style. I’ll get another data point on my graph July 1st
(provided my appoints don’t get shoved out again on account of the covid) to
see if my new life style is holding this effing cancer in check. I reckon
changing a way of eating, after being well persuaded by science, is certainly
better than surgery of chemo right now.

I wonder how much "upgrading" is just changing things to make them use more
computing power for the same end.

I have an old MacPro 2.1 (I think), and other than having to jump though hoops
to upgrade past 10.6.8, it does anything I need it to. Main problem these days
is that no one updates "old" software (anything older than six months, it
seems), so I get web pages that won't work, have to buy new software that does
exactly the same thing the old stuff does but requires "new" OS functions.

Bloatware to the max!

There have been few, if any, speed increases over the last decade (or two, for
that matter) -- silicon based CPUs aren't going to run over 3 GHz without
liquid nitrogen cooling, and more than four or six cores and the coordinating
software eats all the functional gains.

Same deal with cell phones, I upgraded because Verizon is dropping CDMA/1x
service and my phone was that style. A bit cranky, but a charge lasted a week
of moderate use. New (used) Samsung has the be charged a couple times a day
and is a royal PITA to use as a phone. Too small to use as a computer, and the
keyboard was obviously designed for small children, can't seem to ever push
just one key at a time with my XL sized fingers.

I'm becoming an old grump.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Blower resistor replacement

2020-05-04 Thread OK Don via Mercedes

I've been working on real biscuits. Its getting there. Mostly I use my
homemade biscuits for topping chicken pot pie. Works out good in a casserole
dish.
For B&G I use a good fatty sausage then add a few scoops of flour and pour the
milk all right into the pan, deglazes the pan while you're at it.
I don't think I've ever had plant based sausage but Mark Rober's positive

me think I should try. Clearly its not the fake meat of yesteryear.

You are luckier than me. I cannot recall if I posted about this earlier
- maybe did. My F150 has a blower issue that I am not going to fix. A
piece broke off inside the big black box thing. I believe the only
function that I have lost is the ability to close the door that causes
recirculate to work so when it is really hot outside, I will not have
the ability to quickly cool the cab with the AC but I can live with
that. It would be a real bear of a job to take it apart and odds are the
part is not available anyway.

My experience with gray market models is pretty limited. I was of the
understanding that the ACC systems were only sold in the States. I realize they
were options like any other, just wasn’t aware they could be ordered overseas.

That W123 that someone posted earlier today is probably a gray market car - one
way to tell is the lack of wood trim. The center console and area around the
shifter were typically black plastic in gray market cars.

Re: [MBZ] 1968 Mercedes Benz 250, $1, 000 -- not half bad up in the mountains

2020-05-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s already close. Brake booster was supposed to come today and it missed the
cutoff at the local USPS hub. Oh, well, I had some stuff to do with the
sprinklers and gutters anyway.

I’ve got some more parts coming but they’re all cosmetic stuff, more or less.
New belly pan (old one is AWOL) and some hardware bits and bobs. Moved the car
around in the driveway this morning and the AC was making ice cubes with the
new blower motor regulator I put in on Friday. Nice. Dropped the Special
Edition (yes, this particular car was a “Special Edition”) wheels off at my
tire guy yesterday to bust the 10 year old Michelins off of the wheels in
anticipation of having them refinished.

Looking forward to being able to drive the thing once the brake booster is
replaced.

So the VIN shows it to be a convertible coupe offered in Europe only. Doesn’t
shed any light on whether or not it’s one without the soft top frame.

Definitely not an SL C. Some 107s came with just a hard top.

It’s not a Euro version if it has Type III ACC. Unless someone converted it,
which I highly doubt. It’s not necessarily a 500SL, either. Only the VIN will
reveal this.

I wonder what they mean by “the rare hardtop convertible version”? It looks
like an SLC, I don’t see a header on the front of the top, looks like it’s a
solid top (coupe).

"Grandpa's car" means it has been sitting for awhile, gramps didn't do a
lot with it or to it so it has tons of deferred maintenance plus needs
correct wheels and tires, the grands realized it was a total project and
have unrealistic expectations about the car because all they did was
google some values and say yeah let's get $4k!!!  wooo wooo!

Re: [MBZ] My BaT Car

2020-05-04 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
The 3.5 coupe is overpriced. No sunroof. Boring and peeling plaikn walnut
(not burl or zebrano) dash wood. Replaced rear compensator with the
inferior spring kit. Changed color. On the road test video it appears
that either the speedo or tach wasn't working properly.

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-05-04 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I worked a rotating day/nights shift from about ‘77 until 2009. Every night
shift job I’ve ever had, from making donuts to working at the nuke plant, from
mid 70’s to late 90’s, I listened to the good doctor on the radio. Then, the
one Phoenix station that carried him dropped him in ‘97 or ‘98. It was really
strange to have what was such a ital part of working nights suddenly gone.
