Re: [MBZ] a 'Mog for $3800!

2008-01-18 Thread Zach

You guys can yuck it up all you want, $3800 is a good price for this
thing regardless of engine problems.

FYI the OM617A swap in this is possible but non-trivial without athe
use of a special bellhousing andsome other odd bits.

The rest of it is rusty/decaying, and so is the suspension.

These are not like cars... The bodies can rust away while the chassis
mechanicals can remain in pretty good shape. Sometimes you see
severe chassis rust on the agricultural models that have been used in
salty environments, but as a general rule the military models (like
this one) just have body sheet metal rust from sitting in a damp
military depot for 30 years. The mechanical parts are more than likely
fine. Trust me on this, I have seen a *lot* of unimogs up close and
body rust was never an indicator of mechanical condition...

As far as sheet metal goes, these are a very forgiving vehicle to learn
bodywork on. The military cabs are all hand-made to begin with, all
the panels are available and relatively easy to fit with simple body
tools, it is all sheet metal over a square tube frame.

Re: [MBZ] OT: value of Citroen DS Wagon?

2008-01-16 Thread Zach

No sure whether its a 19 or 21, I didnt get that close. Will check it
out again on saturday. Yes, its a full wagon.

Is there any way to gauge the condition of the hydraulics without it
running? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I am wondering if
there is some common sign like leaking struts or a particular color
hydraulic fluid...

From 20 feet it looked solid, but there was alos a lot of snow on the
thing! I will crawl under it next time..

 Zach,,

Are you talking about a DS19, DS21, or something else? Full wagon, I

Well, they are uncommon especially here in the States. Problem areas
include, but are not limited to:

Hydraulic system for the suspension which also feed the brakes and
power steering. Not a bad system by design, but they often suffered
 at
 the hands of unskilled technicians.

Electrical systems. Think early lucas, but at least ground is the
 correct polarity.

Rust, rust, and more rust! Think w114 coupe daily driven in the
 north-east.

If it has a semi-automatic gearbox, think MB hydrak! Ugh!

Seriously, they are neat cars, drive and ride like nothing else. The
 4
cylinder is a simple motor. Parts are not too hard to come across
 once
you have an in with a few suppliers. Beware of inferior aftermarket
quality parts. There are times when you will need to ship bits in
 from
overseas though. Napa carries little more than oil filters for these
 cars!

As for price, they run the gamut. I saw a clean DS21 wagon go on EBay

about two years ago for under $4k, low mileage, almost no rust,
 stored
 indoors for a few years.

Last comment on them, I enjoy driving a Citroen more than I enjoy
 working on it.

The Apple hardware *is* PC hardware, there are artificial restrictions

The problem is one of driver/hardware compatibility. A big contributor

Apple has a vertically-integrated solution so they have much greater

that most Windows crashes/bluescreens are due to flakey driver code
that is provided by third-party developers. Nevertheless everybody

If the oil sloshes forward while the car is tilte4d forward it can
briefly pool behind the vacuum pump diaphram, if there is a crack in
the rubber it can get sucked through and be pumped into the intake with
a resulting cloud of smoke... In my case it was while going down a

to make the engine run uncontrolled on the motor oil with a
corresponding cloud of smoke...

Re: [MBZ] HOAs Re: anyone want a CHEAP 240D Fixer?

2007-07-28 Thread Zach

This happens to someone in the mog world about every 8 months or so.
The HOA starts bitching and trying to kick the mog out with existing
rules like no dualie trucks (mogs have singles) no commercial
vehicles (its not) no vehicles with GVW over 10k (its around 6-8k,
less than the BIG SUVs parked all over) Its like they take one look
and start throwing rules at it without bothering to see if the rules
apply.

I dont recall exactly what this case was but it was something stupid...

[MBZ] HOAs Re: anyone want a CHEAP 240D Fixer?

2007-07-27 Thread Zach

HOA's are a crock of shit, dont put yourself in that position... There
are a lot of nice neighborhoods where people work on cars AND mow the
lawn and keep things tidy without some anal-retentive power-tripper
trying to crack down...

Or do what one of my Mog friends did: when the neighbors started
complaining about the mog he ran for presidente of the HOA and won.
The fact that this solved his problem illustrates the inherent
injustice in that system.

Unless you are doing TIG brazing! ;)

I have been using the silicon-bronze rod with the TIG welder for almost
everthing these days, it gives you all the precision of TIG with even
less heat into the workpiece and it is more forgiving of dirty metal
(vs. regular TIG)

If you do it right it is a true braze in that the filler sits on the
metal rather than melting into it, but interestingly enough you can
turn up the heat and it will mix with the steel like regular filler
rod. I hove no idea of the strength implications though...

It is the best thing in the world for TIG'ing on old dirty car metal!

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-07-25 Thread Zach

Brazing is actually extremely strong, as strong or stronger than
welding with the advantage of a lower temperature during construction.
but like everything else a lot of the strength lies in the joint
design.

I will still be happy to take a crack at it! :)

--- Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hey Zach,

You are so right. The tube accepts a rectangular bracket, and it
appears that the break is in the bracket.

Brazing doesn't sound very strong. So I guess it broke before and
someone brazed it. I did put in maybe a year or so of hard use on the
bike and it held. I have been learning that the point of breakage is
one of the highest stressed areas of the frame. Amazing that it held.

Seems like a poor design in the first place.

This *might* mean that the frame is lugged which means that the

 is
  then brazed.

Hard to tell from the pics but are you sure the break is in the
 tube or
is it in the bracket that the tube is attached to? Is the center
 of

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-07-20 Thread Zach

This is one of those theory vs. reality areas. Theoretically welding
CroMo without a post-weld stress relieving cycle will weaken the welded
area, but in practice there are a lot of people out there welding on
CroMo with no post-weld treatment (or improvised treatment with a
torch) and it works fine. It has a lot to do with the intended
application and how much of a safety factor you have to begin with.

What is the nature of the current failure? When you say bike shop do
you mean a custom CroMo frame builder or just the local bike mechanic?
I dont think they know what they are talking about... Obviously the
frame was welded once so no reason it cannot be welded again unless
there is some additional complexity introduced by the current problem
you are trying to fix.

I would find the local homebuilt aircraft guys and have them do it.
Those guys gas or TIG weld CroMo airframes all day long...

are neat trucks and a lot of fun, and the owners tend to be
iconoclastic individualists much like the die-hard diesel benz guys.

If you are truly interested in mogs you sould come to one of the big

while and then you have to do it again.

As far as suspesion work goes, the only difficult job on a W123 is the
lower ball joints, they are ridiculously difficult. The rest is
relatively easy, I just changed both upper control arms in about 40
minutes with a jack, a few wrenches, gear puller and a hammer.

 That means it sucks?

I dont know if it sucks, I havent used it yet. But it is definately
very basic. There is a current control on the front panel so I bet you
could rig a foot pedal if you did some wiring mods...

I want TIG for the odd exotic/small items. I just can't justify
that kind of scratch for it.

Once you use it you wont regret the $$. I have seen used units for
quite a bit less. Welding Aluminum is pretty cool!

So the foot pedal is just the heat potentiometer? Not something
like a spark-starter or something else weird? That would be
doable, there are plenty of old sewing machine foot-operated
rheostats around that I'm sure could be modified to carry the
 right potentiometer. :-)

It is a current-limiting device. On a normal TIG you set the max
current on the panel, then the foot pedal varies the current between
zero and that max setting. There is also a microswitch that turns the
arc and gas on/off. Shouldnt be hard to fab something I will be
at my friends house tonight, if I get a chance I will try out the
welder and report results as compared to my fancy unit. I can also try
diddling the dial on the front panel while welding to see if it
functions the same as a foot pedal.

I've welded aluminum with the MIG. Most 'impressive' was the
hole blown in the side of our tiller's aluminum crankcase.
But it doesn't come out pretty. I also welded up the pinholes
in some of my Mom's favorite old heavy aluminum pots. Those
were a mess, and took a lot of grinding.

You need a TIG! ;)

Re: [MBZ] OT: welders, again

2007-06-05 Thread Zach

The Harbor Freight TIG is probably the scratch-start DC only unit that
my friend has, there is no foot pedal and no AC so you can not weld
aluminum...

Setting aside the super-cheap stuff for a moment, I have what I would
consider an entry level TIG and it set me back $1800, but it has AC
with wavebalance, adjustable weld paramaters, etc, etc. It will do up
to 160 amps. The TIG is way cool, I can weld my own aluminum
intercooler pipes, do fine repairs on exotic metals, etc. However
there are a lot of times where I wish I had a MIG as well it is much
faster and easier for the day to day stuff. If you dont ever
anticipate doing odd projects in exotic metals *and* you dont want to
spend a ton of time practicing (TIG is difficult to master) then just
get a decent MIG.

As far as MIG welders go I would recommend the Lincoln SP135+ or
whatever replaced it in the current lineup, key features are 20amp 110v
supply and fully adjustable heat range. (an easy way to spot a cheap
MIG is turn the heat knob, if it clicks into only a couple of positions
then it is not infinately adjustable and not as flexible in use)

  -Zach

--- Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Yeah, I was just discovering that! I had been assuming that an
 entry
level TIG unit would be similar to a MIG.

I keep seeing this Harbor Freight TIG unit that pops up for sale
at $200 every so often. I'm not sure, but I think it's just an
inverter accessory for a regular (stick?) welder.

[MBZ] dilemma and fair price for a 79 300TD

2007-04-23 Thread Zach

Alrighty here is a topic to mull over...

I have a 79 300TD that I thought I would keep forever but recent
experience has shown that my interest have drifted to other things...
I am thinking of selling it but wanted to get some feedback from the
peanut gallery concerning value.

The good:
 - 1979 300TD non-turbo
 - no structural damage or rust, body is solid
 - transmission shifts correctly
 - good vacuum (locks work correctly)
 - Alloys with correct benz tires
 - 290K miles
 - runs like a champ! Seriously it is really strong. (probably not the
original motor)
 - Good rear struts/hydropneumatic system, oil filter are fresh
 - front balljoints replaced
 - upper control arms will be replaced
 - rear subframe bushing will be replaced
 - Climate control replaced with manual controls from 240D

The bad:
 - 79 == no turbo and no sunroof!
 - paint is not bad, but it is a respray of the factory color and has a
few blemishes. No peeling or systemic failure, just some small bubbles
here and there.
 - windshield area *had* leaks, they are fixed now but not before it
swamped the interior and ruined the carpet. Floorboards have been
scraped clean, carpet replaced with home-fitted stuff from Home Depot.
Actually it looks pretty good, I found a saltpepper gray that looks
very German.
 - Rear spare tire/tool area still leaks
 - AC does not work and would require a new compressor, system flush,
and some spirited tinkering to integrate with the 240D climate
controls.

basically this car is showing its age but it is still solid and with a
good motor and rebuilt suspension it has a lot of miles left in it.
Think of it less a show car and more of a candidate for the
million-mile taxi award. With some enthusiasm this could be a
restoration candidate but there are definately nicer wagons out
there.

Anyone want to offer an opinion on what it is worth? I am in the
Pacific NW.

2007-04-20 Thread Zach
Dropping out of lurk to share some fun pictures with you guys:

http://www.mogtech.com/otherstuff/deaddiesel/

Now here is the riddle:
This car came from the auto auction as a non-runner. There was no oil
in the crankcase but lots of oil on the undercairrage traceable to a
perforated oil cooler line due to a collapsed motor mount. I expected
an obvious oil-realted failure such as a spun bearing or something
similar, but the crank and rod bearings were in reasonable condition...
Somehow the oil loss made the #1 piston self destruct before the rods
could start to fail... Strange...

The moral of the story is to always replace your collapsed motor
mounts!

Mercedes didn't bring that wheel into the US (although it was a
legitimate part). I've seen very few used. There were aftermarket
 wheels
 that would fit.

If you find any, be sure they have the correct (20-25 mm) offset
