Does anyone have a  good (unstretched) coupe cable?
Or has anyone ever cut down & recrimped a 123 sedan cable to fit a coupe? Coupe
cable needs to be 100".

This is an old 300 cd Coupe diesel black with tan interior. Coupes are
rare. This one needs restoration. The mercedes 5 cylinder diesel engine
has approximately 6 miles on it supposedly. It does run strong and
starts well in cold weather but does need body work and interior
restoration work. Its missing the drivers side front light assembly and
has some rust but coupes are rare. Make an offer. Call or text message

Two weeks ago, we noticed a dead raccoon on the edge of the pavement.
This is the season, so... it sat there and I expected it to stink very
bad in the hot sun and humidity. Nope. Five days latter, the bones
were stripped white and the flesh had dissolved, no bugs, no maggots,
no odor. I am thinking someone put some sort of chemical on the
carcass and dissolved the flesh - perhaps that is a new critter
control technology being employed by the County? Is this a new
product to purchase at the Ace Hardware store?
Thanks.

What's with the saggy rear suspension?

And, most importantly, what makes it a Cobra? 327 V-8 transplant?
Carroll Shelby sat in it once? Snakebite supplies in first aid kit

Yeah, but combined with the strong hot-coolant smell? I figured
defective heat control valve at best, leaky heater core at worst.

Ask curt- some of this sounds like the clutch issues on the 78 240D he bought
from me. My 79 240D had wonky blower motor but easy R & R. Never had heat
control issues except for cable from knob to control box. Simple mechanical
fix. YMMV

Went to see a '78 240D 4-speed (W123) advertised on CL. Pretty good
cosmetic shape but some weird things compared to other 123s I've
driven. Steering was extremely loose, is this the infamous
left-hand-threaded steering box bolt that needs to be tightened? The
seats were an odd vinyl-cloth mix, sides Tex as usual, but the fabric
in the center was not the usual Euro scratchy tweed but a smooth
satiny material with a sort of herringbone pattern.

The clutch and master cylinder were new, according to the seller, and
the clutch seemed to have about half an inch of engagement range,
right at the top of the pedal travel. The shifter had none of that
notchy feel that I associate with German cars, but was really loose
and sloppy---the proverbial broomstick in a barrel of rocks. Combined
with the feeling of barely adequate torque and no power, it was more
than a little like driving a VW microbus.

Seller had some weird ideas he'd picked up "from the 240D nuts
online." For example, the car was riding on 205/70R14s on the stock
wheels ("for better ground clearance---it's two inches higher this
way!"), and he said that although he was afraid to try it "everyone
says you should burn the clutch when starting out" on a 240D... by
which he meant that on every takeoff you should floor the accelerator,
then at redline gradually let out the clutch to accelerate, slipping
it all the way like a motorcycle.

Climate control was wonky, too, despite being the famously reliable
manual 240D system! The blower fan barely worked, A/C didn't (later
found out the belt was gone), there was a strong smell of coolant at
all times, and the temperature sliders didn't do anything---there was
full heat all the time. Seller thought that was normal. "You control
the heat with these!" (indicating the twist open/shut feature of the
side dash vents). (Never mind that there was hot air coming out the
foot vents regardless.)

All in all rather disappointing.

The pumps that use ATF are clearly marked. Anything else gets power
steering fluid. Similar but not the same, and ATF is suspected in
seal failures in the newer pumps and boxes.

Yes, I'm quite sure. After two fills of M1 ATF, it shifts very nicely.

Stu Ritter's Bible says that only some of the 124 gas cars started in 2nd, if

Sure about the '87? Mine definitely starts in 2nd. There is a HUGE
difference in acceleration from a stop if I force it into 1st by
flooring it or doing the 2-3-2 trick. Works nicely to surprise

They did, in europe.

Heres one that had it:

I almost bought this car... it was a bit too rough mechanically for the
price, and I needed something to drive without much work.

A few days later, i bought this:

SLS was quite common on taxis, and was available on the diesel models
as a result. Not many in the US, but I do know of an example or two.

Thanks Mitch, I accept. I should also say I thought the initial post in the
thread was funny and appropriate-'what if he had been driving a Mercedes?'.
That reminds me of the old days on this and predecessor lists when posters
would go out of their way to note MB content in borderline OT posts. Those were
creative and often funny

If you have a source for all the right parts (which is probably more parts
than you would think, i.e., you probably need to have a donor 240D that
you are going to leave incapacitated), you should be able to make the
swap.

I found that out when I changed our 240D with an automatic transmission to
a naturally-aspirated 300D with a manual transmission. With the major
parts from a donor and smaller bits and wear items from Rusty, everything
bolted right together and fit the chassis without problems.

Same thing! Down in Cajun country the same one serves for seafood
boil and for frying crawdaddy, or whatever. Unless you want to
spring for peanut oil, canola oil has a lower smoke point than soy
oil. Heat it to 375, add the fries a little at a time, just enough
to keep the oil from boiling over. When they are browned enough,
pull em out. Buy some popcorn salt to shake over them. It is a
finer grain, so it sticks better. Regular salt will fall off.

Got a turkey fryer? If you can find a way to scoop em out, or have a
basket, the fryer makes good fries. I made white sweet tater fires
for turkey day. They were really good.

I hand cut the fries with a 10" chef knife.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL Diesel (needs love) - $1000 (Little Rock,Ar
(downtown))
Date: 2010-06-02, 11:32AM CDT

I have a 1970 MB 280 SEL that needs some love. I do not have the time
to put into restoring it to its original beauty. It is certainly a
project car. All original hubcaps and emblems. No broken glass, all
original! Very very minor rust, but no holes. Mileage is unknown. Full
tank of diesel. If the two new batteries were charged,I do believe it
would start. I do not have a charger nor do I have the time to hook up
jumper cables and let it charge. I have title in hand. Please help me
give this classic a new home! It is killing me to see it everyday and
not be able to do anything with her. We did name her Janis, after
Janis Joplin(a temper, but fun). It just fit the cars personality.
Please email me and I WILL reply quickly! Make me an offer. I can send
pics if you would like. Just let me know. I have 13 pics that I can
send if you are interested.

I DO NOT NEED HELP SELLING THIS CAR NOR DO I WANT ANYONE TO REPRESENT
ME IN THIS SALE. IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN BUYING THE CAR,DO NOT
REPLY TO THIS POST.

Kaleb... anyone? Wife may need to replace her beloved 88 300TE it we
determine it can't be repaired reasonably inexpensively. Drives it
maybe 100 miles per week to work (3 blocks away!) and for grocery
shopping and errands. Never leaves town, so niceties such as AC,
great  mileage, super sound system, etc. not important. Would be nice
if it  looked OK, but she's not that picky--She just wants a benz for
safety  and just because. Or a Volvo 240, but Snook already sold his.
Would  appreciate any leads either in a reasonable distance from Des
MOines,  Iowa or anywhere in MA  or southern NH or ME, where I'm
headed on  business next week and whence I could drive something home.
115, 123,  124 preferred.

Any leads appreciated.

Thanks!

My wife got on that whenever gas was up close to $4, about the
Suburban.  It's 10 yr old, paid for, ins and whatever is minimal, in
good shape, provides a lot of utility and sport, and yeah, it cost
$100 to fill up then (every few weeks), but it is so far down on the
depreciation scale that gas cost for the time we use it is sorta noise
level.  I pointed out that one could spend $20k or $30k and increase
tax, insurance, payments, and everything else to save a few $$ on gas
(not that I would do that).  Made no sense.

been touched. It just started one day and has never stopped. The
tailpipe is now a blur at idle. I replaced all the rubber rings with
new MB parts but that made no difference. Nor did replacing the

Since then, my Indy has tried rebalancing the system (he has the

The only fix is to keep the revs high at idle, which is not natural
and uses heaps of diesel.
My theory is that the muffler is chokka with soot - 350,000 km's
worth - and therefore seriously heavier than it should be.

Anyone wise about this?

Anyone know what a new system from manifold to tail-pipe should
weigh? One day I'll get so fed-up I'll weigh mine.

Re: [MBZ] W123 fenders .. Rusty?

2008-10-03 Thread degcoast
Thanks-I looked on their website at Glen Brown's suggestion-only saw various SL
panels-107, 113, etc. I need to e-mail them. My body shop guy said that he
used to get 123 quarters for years from Bob's Benzes. He said he was fixing
them already back in the 80's here in salty NE-anybody know about Bob's Benzes?
Curt's right-I just need the lower quarter from belt line down with dogleg.

yes, well since we northerners lust after rust free southern beauties, don't
bet on it. My LA, TN, TX 300D 2.5t has minor leaks in compressor, evaporator
and one of the tubes. MB-tech said to see how long R-12 lasted, and he
probably switch cover to R-134a. In NE we need AC about 3 weeks; tops. rest
of the time the AC is just a convenience or a quick way to take moisture off
windshield. when I lived in TN, I had mine on for 6-7 months a year. .

There's your answer-if it's about lust it's worth it. A stick 240D is worth
what you can get our of it for transportation. To respectfully disagree with
Kaleb, here in t he Northeast, a rust free 240D stick would probably bring 3K.
I don't know if I'd trade my 300D 2.5t for a 240D stick. (Mine is an auto but
I have driven my brother's 240D stick.) Also the 240D has a lot fewer miles

Yes-so did my 300D 2.5-it was 10F and no hint of winter. I am assuming I will

turbo 300D. In fact with the possible exception of my old 50 Dodge pickup
with fluid drive that I had when I lived in state College, this may be the
slowest car (power to weight) I ever drove. Means that you have to think
about gravity-I am a cyclist so the two are similar. Only time I really
worry is when I have long uphill merge onto I 95. You really to plan that
one. I commute 3-500 miles a week in mine. I call it a good middle lane
car-Around town it is just fine.
Final point-I love its simplicity and its fine engineering. What a
combination IMHO. With 75k on the one you are looking at might be a sweet
car.
All of this being said, I have just bought a 1990 300D 2.5. But I will keep
the 240D still as a daily driver. I don't know how to compare the 79 with
other years other than I like the old style painted hub caps over the bundt
wheels..

Hope this helps.
Dwight.

Dwight, I am looking at a 1979 240D, with 75,000 miles confirmed through
service records.

I owe a 1977 300D. Please your thoughts on the 1979 240D. How is
mileage on highway? How is car in general. Any quirks on that year?

Not through carfax, that's the old numbering scheme, which carfax never

The 4, 5 and 6 cylinder versions of the CDI engines are in their 2nd or
3rd generation now. They have been available in Europe since the
mid/late '90s. I would NOT be concerned about the mechanical issues -
from the reports I read, the engines are quite durable and are likely to
last a great many hundreds of thousands of miles, but they may NOT age
well. I would be much more concerned about the durability or longevity
of the electrical systems that control the entire injection/emissions
systems - and am skeptical that they will last much more than 10 years.
If you are driving 20+kmi a year, then a CDI diesel might be an ideal
choice. If you are driving closer to 10kmi a year, I'd be afraid that
the electronics and chassis will fail LONG before you've worn out the
engine.

I went to the MBUSA website to check out some info on my car (1990 300D

"Body Style 124

Facelifted, engine changed and name changed to E300 Diesel Sedan Spring

I guess that means that according to MBUSA my car doesn't exist.

Chris,

I had the exact same symptoms on my 240D last winter. I replaced the oil
cap which had been leaking, vowed to keep a closer eye on oil level and it
hasn't happened again.

My car consumes a quart of oil in about 800 miles (Mobil 1 5w40, 15w50 and
0w40, tried all 3). It leaks a fair bit of that and must burn some too.
I've driven about 35,000 miles since I switched to synthetic and all I can
say is it isn't getting any worse. Maybe a little better but I don't keep
careful enough records...

seems like the list is down, which means you'll get
this in time to disregard my previous post.

After sitting for 4 hours, I checked the oil level
(coolant was fine) - NOTHING. So I added 3 qrts (2
probably would have been better) and now everything is
back to normal. DH (as Homer would say).

No excuse, but not having a working odometer probably
contributed to my lack of oversight. It obviously does
burn oil. Will need to watch that much more carefully.

Are there any maintenance issues that would improve
burning oil? Oil Pressure is good, compression is not
great...what is the cause? worn rings? Anything a
healthy dose of Diesel Purge might fix? How about a
3,000 highway run on M1 to break crud up on the rings
and help them reseat? This car sat in MN FOREVER and I
have only driven it around town and local highways. At
first it would not start under 40, let alone at near
freezing on my "special sauce" ("alternative fuel")

Anybody from New England up for an MB enthusiasts get together?
I live in Gardner, MA which is pretty much the center of New England and
was thinking of "hosting" a Rustyq/Okieq type get together. No clever names yet.
Basics:
Place: Dunns Pond State Park, Gardner, MA.
The state charges a $5/car parking fee which I'm going to see if I can get
waived or reduced for MB drivers. The park is fairly small but has a nice pond
and picnic area. In the vicinity is Mt. Wachusett which you can drive up and
see all the way to Boston ('bout 50 miles) on a clear day.
When: Late September or early October. Right now I'm bandying about Sept
24th or Oct 1 depending on response.
Who: MB Enthusiasts.
What: Meet some new people, stand/sit around talk cars and whatever else
comes to mind. Eat some barbeque.

201 evaporators almost NEVER fail. If they do, they are replaced from
the engine side - pretty easy compared to E and S class cars (pull the
wiper mechanism and blower assembly and that allows you to change the
evaporator). A Nippendenso compressor (the shaft seal is probably what
has failed) IS expensive.

sounds like maybe your brake hoses are bad and need to be replaced.
This is likely because you couldnt push the pistons in with hose hooked
up but could when you removed then.

ned kleinhenz wrote:

I found an unusual (to me) situation when replacing the rear brake
pads on one of my '95 E300D. A dealer replaced the disks and pads at
some point just short of 300k mi, perhaps 2-1/2 years ago. It's now
at 352k mi. The rear brakes started making noise, so today I started
replacing the pads myself. When I removed the old pads on the left,
the outboard pad was gone and metal was rubbing the disk. The inboard
pad was still like new and seemed to be siezed in the caliper. The
right rear brake is in similar condition, but not quite as bad. The
outboard pad is down to about 1/4 and the inboard pad is maybe at 3/4.

To sort this mess out, I removed both calipers. There is no evidence
of leakage. And when I forced each pistion back (two per caliper) it
squirted fluid out the hose connections. So the pistons don't seem to
be siezed. But there is a lot of rust/corrosion around the pad guides
and pressure surfaces. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the
source of this problem? How do I correct it and avoid a repeat? Can
I cleanup and rebuild the calipers?
