[MBZ] Undercover - A car cover

2024-07-13 Thread r rhonald.me via Mercedes
All, I have had some conversations with a few people locally and I am doing
some online research. My current Estate Wagon is going to get replaced. I
didn't address the rust in time (lesson painfully learned), but I got 12 good
years of use out of it and it never let me down at the time I needed it most.
I love my 123.

That being said, I am on the hunt for another vehicle. This time, I am looking
at convertibles and a 2nd "runaround" vehicle for daily use. This new one will
only get driven occasionally. And certainly not in the snow, and it a week of
rain is predicted, not then either.

My property doesn't have a garage but it does have a good-sized driveway.

The questions:

  1. Who uses a car cover, what brand, and how has it worked out for you? I
have heard moisture can build up under some of them during long-term storage

  1. What defines "long-term?" Winter? December - March? I would think
anything over 6 months would be long-term. And winter I would think would be
better than summer long-term.

  1.
Has anyone had experience with portable garages? Carports only offer direct
overhead protection, not blowing rain and snow so someone suggested a portable
garage (not connected to the house)

  2.
What type/brand of wax or ceramic coatings are best to use? Some have said
that the seams on the underside have left fine scratches on the car body.

Thanks!

The chrome wheel arches are an abomination on any car and also hasten infection
with the tinworm. I can’t count the number of W126s I’ve seen over the years
where all it took to start rust occurring with these things on the car was the
little screws they used to self-drill into the fender lip.

I’m not a fan of the 8-hole wheels on W123s, but with the limited choices of
wheel sizes for these cars, especially 15” versions, I would consider it for
just that reason. I’ve owned a W123 with stock 15” steel wheels, and it was a
totally different car to drive compared to the 14” stock wheels. I completely
agree that they should be bundts (yuck!) or steelies with color-keyed wheel
covers, the classiest looking setup I've ever seen on any car trying to
coordinate wheel colors with the body color scheme.

I hope I am responding correctly. I have not been here for a long time. My
300D got totaled in a storm and I replaced it with a 300TD Estate Wagon. I
agree, well almost:

The chromed arches invite rust (holes in the metal)
I have seen a couple (560 SL that also had the same chrome rims) that don't
look so bad, just not on this model
IF one is going to have them, the rims need to be chrome as well. Nothing
worse than just having them by themselves. They just scream for attention.

The old M100's 600 SEL had them, and because the line of the chrome wrapped
around the entire car including the rocker panel and the bumpers and the trim
around the windows, it looks complete to me.
Otherwise, it is a nice-looking vehicle...not my color favorite though...

Actually re-keying these is simplicity itself. The cylinder has
little brass wafers in it that the key passes through. All you'd
need is a new cylinder and its no big deal to transfer the wafers
from one to another.

Perhaps I should make a video for the you tubes. Some of my how to

Ever look at a common thing with new eyes from a different view?

 Perspective on perspective
 January 23, 2014 at 2:55pm
After a day of fine, dry snow and the horrendous wind gusts to blow it
around, the park was empty of walkers as I stood on the banks of the
Mississippi and observed the texture of its frozen waters. Any slightly
raised surface had captured a tuft of snow as the wind carved across the
ice. With the light coming from the side, each tiny snowy hillock was
illuminated as a white dot or curve marking the surface topography against
the gray of the ice. I stood silently taking it in before I realized that
today I had remembered to bring my camera with me. I went to work trying
 capture the scene.

A tripod would be best. Any serious photographer would use one in this
circumstance. I even had one in the car. Be prepared was the motto. I
decided against being a serious photographer and instead made my way
down the snow-covered riprap to the icy surface of one of the natural
wonders of the world. We don't often think of the river in those terms.
Indeed, most of us don't think of the river period unless it is either in
our way or up to our back door. Still, we live within a stone's throw of
one of the great rivers of the world. It is a rare pleasure (for me, at
least) to be able to stand on its surface. I'm literally walking on water.
 Gingerly.

I examined the ice beneath my feet, noting the trapped air bubbles,
patterns of lines and cracks. I take a photo, again missing the tripod and
softly cursing my unwillingness to grab another cold piece of metal. I
muse that no matter what sounds and noises are in the air, a vast expanse
of solid ice seems to symbolize silence. The wind howls past my ears, but
the ice regards me with a frigid silence-waiting perhaps for a misplaced
step or a moment of inattention. I imagine the sound my head might make
crashing into the ice, a sickening meeting of the biological and the
 elemental. I mind my step.

My mind begins dialectic on the qualities of ice, while my eyes scan the
seemingly uniform surface that extends toward the main channel. I venture
further out, considering, as I go, the similarities between ice, water,
sand, and soil. They can all protect and preserve or utterly destroy the
same item. Ice can entomb. Mammoths, man, or mullets, it makes no
difference. All movements cease and the particular silence that is ice
predominates. However well preserved the specimen is once freed from its
frosty crystalline tomb, the silence has forever altered things.

Standing on the river, my perspective is altered. I'm seeing a familiar
world in a new way. I'm still perfectly safe, but I feel less safe. Is
that it? Perhaps I feel new and am reading it as less safe. I like it.
I'm dressed for the weather, although still cold, and am eyeing the ice
longingly. I look around to check for people who might be alarmed at the
sight of a body stretched out on the Mississippi river ice. Seeing none, I
lower myself carefully onto the ice, hindered by the camera around my
neck. The difference in perspective is immediate and dramatic. While
keeping the exposed skin of my face away from the surface, I release the
rest of my body to the frozen river. My mind explodes with imagery.

My new perspective puts me into a series of bodies. My view of the bank is
exactly the same as the gulls I've photographed from land. I see myself
through the gull's eyes, my camera lens centered in the dark window of my
car. Other gulls, some throwing their heads back and shrieking surround
me. My mind transports me through a series of creatures I've seen or
photographed and who saw me from roughly this same perspective-ring-neck
ducks, Canada geese, muskrats, pelicans, carp, catfish, and northern water
snakes. The cold is starting to sink into the bones of my legs.

The shore looks different from down here. From this vantage point I
understand why the river cat liked to hunt the riprap. I named her the
river cat because that is where I always saw her. She knew this stretch of
rocks like the back of her paw. She hunted deliberately, with no wasted
motion. The last time I saw the river cat she had a single kitten in tow.
Tired of holding my head up, I rest it on my folded arm. Feeling my body
pressing against the ice, I inhabit the body of a leopard seal, having
hauled myself onto an ice floe to hunt juvenile penguins. I search the ice
for bears but seeing none, I close my eyes and bask in the winter sun.
My shivering body pulls me back to reality and I slowly work my way to my
feet. I cross the ice and scramble up the snow-covered rocks and fall
gratefully into my car. I start the engine and crank up the heater. As I
 warm up, I

I think the simplest and easiest is one that has a USB port for a
geekstick.
You use MP3 files. I just installed a GROM in the wife's 2003 Jetta with
Monsoon radio. It plugged into the cable for the CD changer, accepts a
geekstick and plays the directories on the stick as if they were discs.
Easy-peasy. Or, if the receiver has Bluetooth you can connect a phone or
 BT
enabled tablet. The GROM I installed also has BT, which will give SWMBO
 the
ability to stream Sirius or other internet radio from her phone.
Crutchfield is a good place to start looking.

Be advised that any modern radio will have too much power to allow the
 rear
speakers to be controlled by the wheel in the console. That must be
 rewired
to bypass the wheel. I was able to find correct sized good quality
replacement speakers for the rear pair for a '79 300TD but didn't want to
 mess with the front.

I also also asked, how would you tell from driving about the bolts? I see a lot of the work specified here as being near overkill. How leaky are the rear struts?

I assumed they leak bad enough because the ride sucks at this point.

Is the rear suspension clunking?

 Banging and Thumping

If the self-leveling system is working properly and not bottoming out under load or driving conditions, there is nothing that would indicate replacement of the major components.

Well, something needs doing, as I say it rides like a skateboard; Who' is around the DC,VA,MD area? I would be happy to drive somewhere so you can here and feel what I am talking about.

I would add that a number of people have successfully rebuilt leaky rear struts as well.

Well, I don't engage in DIY on the car, so rebuilding leaky struts is not happening I guess.

I wonder about the amount of work going into a car of that age. You have to take a step back and ask yourself if it's really necessary.

I hear what you are saying, but what I see as "necessary" is different from the next guy.Not sure what "bottoming out means, but the ride is harsh, almost "BANG, THUMP" when riding over bumps and rough pavement. I don't like driving cars where the suspension feels like it is holding together by rubber bands! I have loaded it with chairs, tables and boxes and I did not notice that it sagged in the rear. Would this suggest that the leveling is working properly? That would be a great time to change motor mounts as well. Please use good quality German parts, as this is not a difficult job, but not a fun job either. You don't want to be changing them out again in a year. You can make your own oil line wrenches by cutting down some pawn shop Craftsman ones. Liberal repeated applications of your favorite penetrating oil on the oil cooler threads days before hand helps too.

I would advise soaking the fittings with a 50:50 mix of acetone and ATF for at least a day (apply several times) before attempting to remove the old lines. Be sure you use a wrench on the cooler side and one on the hose side and squeeze them together to break the fitting loose so you don't twist the fitting off of the cooler. Flare-nut style wrenches are advised!

Hmm. Okay. Then you should have them replace the motor mounts with good quality German parts. Good time for the engine shocks also. The shock mounts are shockingly expensive ($300 for both, roughly), but you may need the one on the drivers side, as it sits under the injection pump and is prone to being subject to any fuel leaks that may occur.

Send Gary an email. I like the Mercedes Source guy for some specialty tools (glow plug reamer, shift bushing tool, etc.) but he seems kinda high on parts.

That and he charges for instructional leaflets and videos. His YouTube videos are more infomercial than instruction, and I just dislike that. I am not really sure why that doesn't sit well with me, it just doesn't. I know this is a capitalist country, and God bless him if he can make a buck hawking information, but there is such a wealth of free knowledge on the subject of old MB's out there, why bother paying for it? That said, his videos are pretty well produced.

Engine vibration damper. Bushings may need replacement if they're original, but the damper is probably OK.

Definitely consider the engine mounts, as they'll have to pretty much take the driver's side mount off, or at least unbolt one side of it in order to do the oil lines.

You're lucky if the oil cooler was recently replaced, as the main point of failure when this job is done are the threads on the oil cooler. The coupling on the cooler is aluminum, and the threads tend to gall when you remove the old line fittings. If your indie has done these they'll be very conscious of this.

Why are you doing rear struts? If they're not leaking, leave them alone and just replace the accumulators (but only if you've lost the "bounce" in the rear suspension.)

Re: [MBZ] 123 '85 TD Wagon questions

2013-01-10 Thread r
Guys, narrowing down the issues with this wagon I got some specifics
about what is wrong. Just looking to get a few more comments on this
for my case file.

1. How does a drive shaft wear out at 225,00 miles? The says says it
is the shaft, not the mount.

2. Oil cooler hoses; they leak, and I was told if they sieze, it is a
$1200 repair. So, does this mean, just replace the hoses; what causes
this to happen, and at 225,000? I can prevent this from happening?

3. The downpipe has a small leak, something to do with the exhaust
(manifold to the resonator) No idea what that does. How would this
happen at 225,000 miles. My black 300 has almost 350,000 miles and I
have never had any of the above problems.

4. Small leak in differential, left side. I am told that if I run
dry, it is a costly repair.

5. Transmission front pump leaking. I did not know there was a pump
other than the vacuum pump.

This getting worse by the day and I am thinking the car must have been
abused before I got it?

Thanks all!

 1. How does a drive shaft wear out at 225,00 miles? The says says it

The shaft itself does not wear out. You need some clarification as to the
issue. Are they saying the universal joints are worn, or the center bearing
is bad? U-joints aren't a terribly major repair, but this is one better left
to a shop that specializes in driveshafts. Perfect DIY RR job, carry it in,
pick it up when done and reinstall.

For that matter they may even be speaking of flex disk, too. Another fairly
 easy DIY job.

 2. Oil cooler hoses; they leak, and I was told if they seize, it is a
$1200 repair. So, does this mean, just replace the hoses; what causes
this to happen, and at 225,000? I can prevent this from happening?
Again, you need more details, but in a car of this age and mileage, the oil
cooler hoses are typically swollen and close to failure from age, heat and
pressure. Should one of them fail while you are driving at speed, the
potential for catastrophic engine damage is high.

As others have mentioned, the dissimilar metals used in the fittings and oil
cooler cause said fittings to gall and often damage or destroy the fittings
on the oil cooler during their removal. If this occurs, a new or used oil
 cooler is in order.

 3. The downpipe has a small leak, something to do with the exhaust
(manifold to the resonator) No idea what that does. How would this
happen at 225,000 miles. My black 300 has almost 350,000 miles and I
have never had any of the above problems.
Again, not enough information. Is this an actual leak in an exhaust pipe, as
if it were cracked, or is it simply a leak at the joint between the manifold
and down pipe heading back to the resonator?

If the joint is leaking, it's a simple fix of replacing the seal that belongs
in the joint. Fairly common repair for an older diesel.

 4. Small leak in differential, left side. I am told that if I run
dry, it is a costly repair.

Again, more detail is needed. Is the case leaking, are they talking about the
axle, etc? If the input shaft seal is leaking, the seal requires replacement.
Special tools should be used for this job, although I have done it without.
Minimal parts cost, small labor, but does require the driveshaft and flexible
 coupling to be removed.

 5. Transmission front pump leaking. I did not know there was a pump
 other than the vacuum pump.
Yup. The front pump is one of two pumps in the transmission that pressurize
the hydraulic system in the transmission. The front pump is the most critical
of the two, but a small leak is not a big deal and like a rear seal leak can
be tolerated for a long time unless it gets excessive.

This getting worse by the day and I am thinking the car must have been
 abused before I got it?
I really doubt it. These are typical repairs for a 123 chassis vehicle with
the age and mileage yours has. Some of these could be suggested that they are
related to maintenance, but worst case, deferred maintenance rather than
 abuse, in my opinion.

Speaking of opinions, it sounds like you probably have a competent and detail
oriented mechanic who knows these cars well. If this is the case, your best
bet is to partner with him and work out a plan to prioritize the repairs and
take them one at a time. For example, I would suggest that the oil cooler
lines be done first, as they have the most potential for catastrophic damage.
The transmission and differential leaks are probably inconsequential and can
go on for a while without any damage other than that to your driveway.

If the driveshaft is not making any noise, you can probably defer this one
and coordinate it with the differential input shaft seal, since it has to be
removed to do the job anyway.

If your mechanic is good, honest and professional, he should have no trouble
at all sitting down with you and coming up with a plan of attack that is
 acceptable and reasonable.

 Good luck,

 Dan

Hey Andrew, how are you? This is an official gratitude post for your
recommendation. I met with Luis and he spent much time with me. It was
a good education; he is awesome! We found some additional areas in the
back windows at the . I would have NEVER known to look there. I will
post some abreviated details soon. I can now move on to the next step.
I have put together a list of events surrounding this purchase, but not
sure if I should post all of it. It is long and everyone may not want
to read all of that, if not I can send off the list, but I think it
could be important info for anyone. I have attempted to just state the
facts. I am also going to post photos on a website link. This is not a
situation anyone wants to find themselves in. I have been advised by
E-bay and the Montgomery Office of Consumer Affairs so far. A big
thanks to everyone else who provided input.

If you can access both sides of the panel then lead is nice. Downsides
are that the heat burns away the protective coating on back side of
panel. Also, flux can sometimes seep out of the lead and mar the paint
job.

Very true. A competent professional will use very little, if any, bondo or
filler. In most cases they use it to simply clean up a line, not to build
up a damaged area. If they are replacing metal, there should be no bondo on
 the new metal.

I had the jack points rebuilt on my former 1979 300TD, and I saw the areas
where they cut to old metal away and relaxed it with new., It's an area
with a lot of layers and complex angles - it's easy to make the outside
look nice, but critical to get the inside parts done correctly while they
are in there doing the work.

The guy that did my 1979 300TD did lead. He was a third generation
German coach builder (his great-grandfather built and repaired carriages
and coaches) who was an absolute artist.

No lead on the 300TD, as we used all new metal, but I got to watch him
do some on another car one day when I was visiting.

Sadly, he's gone as is his shop. He had an apprentice but I don't know
where he went after the shop closed.

Just a warning: most body shops deal with collision and paint. They
usually don't know or care to know how to repair rust correctly.
You need to find someone that specializes in rust repair or restoration.

If the rockers and/or jack points need to be repaired/replaced, it's
usually cost prohibitive to do so. There are a number of layers of metal
in these areas that have to be cut out and replaced section by section
to do it correctly. I know, because I had it done myself some years ago.

[MBZ] Choosing the right cover for Outdoor Storage on '85 300TD Wagon

2012-12-18 Thread r
Who has had experience (goodand bad)with car covers? Garage storage is not an option right now. I am using a cover I bought from ADIST Co. for the 300D on the new (old) TD wagon until I can get another.I first went to Covercraft and they have this chart where it compares all the covers. The Weather Shield is the top of the line as I told them I wanted maximum water roll-off. But the ding factor is not high (hail stones in spring and summer) It also shows "Best" for all weather protection, rain, snow, dust, tree sap, but breathability is only rated good. I am not concerned with tree sap as it is not parked under trees.

The Sunbrella is rated better for breathability and shows best for UV Sun damage. So I am not completely sure how to judge. Which is better; sun resistance or keeping the moisture out?The Sunbrella is not good for snow, I guess that means as it melts it soaks the cover? This morning when I raised the cover I have now, there was like steam on some places on the hood. I am thinking it does not breath enough? But how can it breathe if it is sealed to provide water roll-off?

Here is the link: http://www.covercraft.com/carcovers/car_cover_fabrics.html

Thanks very much,

Water as vapor has no surface tension, so it can fit through

liquid can't get in!

Re: [MBZ] Inspecting for Rust and other questions for 85 123 Estate Wagon

2012-12-15 Thread r
Good morning Kaleb and others. Rhonald is back on the list after a long break.
Thoroughly enjoyed talking with Kaleb, Marshall, and others. Howis everyone doing?

My 300D got smashed in the rear of the roof and damage to trunkin June from storms in the Washington, DC area. The tree is still standing, so imagine the size of the branches! But I am still driving like nothing happened. No rattles, squeaks, etc. Trunk lock still works.

So, I am looking for another vehicle; have an appt. tomorrow to see an Estate Wagon; Thurs but my body shop guy, who was going to do the rust repair on my sedan is out of the country. So far so good with the owner describing everything and answering my questions.

Who has experience with looking for rust on the 123 TD Estate Wagon?Howmany of you own the Estate Wagon? There was 1 small "surface rust spot about the size of a quarter"which was taken care of. I will see it up on the lift when I go and will examine. Are there any places beside the rocker panelarea, fender edges (my current car is bad at the left rear fender forward the wheel), jack holes, drivers side underside, under battery tray, front stone pan and up under the rear bumper?

Any other questions to ask about the '85 Estate Wagon in particular? It has 225,000 miles.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [MBZ] Inspecting for Rust and other questions for 85 123 Estate Wagon

2012-12-15 Thread r
Hey Craig, thanks. Wow, hope you get back to work soon. My post acceptance was late for my purchase, so I found my 6" binder with about 1,300 posts and used it a guide. Cannot say how grateful I am to have found this list in 2000. What car do you own again? I picked the car up yesterday morning. I looked in all these areas...we had the car up on the lift, the headlights and the housings were replaced. No rust inside. Stone pan clean, jack holes clean. But, I did find a few small spots down at the bottom of the doors; the previous owner used a knife; it was hard, solid. It appears as just surface rust. And next to the sunroof...the surface is rough, not flaking or anything. In the compartment where the rear-end hydraulic fluid reservoir is located; nothing. Spare storage, nothing, except a small area with a plug in it, there is a hole in the plug. I lifted up the flat rubber plastic in back (no third seat in this one) nothing except sand, leaves, trash, etc. Popped open the seats (very cool) reminded me of the M100 jump seats. No rust but some white stuff...like how steel oxidizes or something, what is that? No sign of mildew or mold under the mats though. No smell. Nothing is soft, it is all hard metal. I am taking the car to my guy next week after I get it titled and registered. He was going to do the repair on my current 4Dr. at $5,000 - $6,000 UNTIL, the two gigantic tree branches landed on my roof and trunk in June. The tree still stands! It took me all summer to get over it; and the thought of losing the car. I got a rental for about a week. Nice car, but well I don't need to say it; we all know. I was so glad to get back in my 123, cold drafts and all! How on earth do people see out of the rear window of these newer cars???So, if there is something I missed I want know NOW, not 9 years from now, like on the current vehicle. I did not see it on a lift when I bought it in 2000. On the 4Dr. I only saw rust on the stone pan and the jack holes, which I had repaired. My guy saw it over the summer, and said, it was an OK job but not done quite right. That is when I learned about all the rest of it. I had no idea all of that was happening under there. The car was leased by the CEO of the PA Power Company. I have many records, but you know it was snow and salt driven. There will be NO snow driving this year, in either one. It is horrible here, just a mention of snow, and the trucks are out like an army. So, I am working on how to fix it enough to put in a new rear window. I am not spending a lot on it given the rust issues now. However, the shrink wrap and the painters plastic cloth is getting old!Other questions??? I am not that familiar with this model, though I always thought it was fine! I do know the rear suspension is different and I have seen some sagging in the back; I guess they did not do proper maintenance? 1. How would one install a sound system, including a sub-woofer? No, I don't need loud, just deep base so I can feel the guy plucking the strings in a jazz trio, or those low notes that Sara Vaughn hits with ease as a child plays in the sand box. I thought it would great NOT to remove the original Becker. I installed a Clarion in the 4Dr. The buttons are symmetrical; a must. I looked today trying to imagine where speakers would go. Reuss Systems (post from way back) quoted me $2,500 for the 4Dr. He said the 123 was one of the most difficult cars to tune the sound.2. The black carpets in the back have faded of course, so at some point I will replace. All carpets are original and in good shape for 27 years.3. Who fabricates custom mats, like if I send a template in? I want two pieces I can lay out in the back with a lip around the edge.4. What is different about the transmission?5. I think that is about it, other than anything I should know. Is there a group for TD Wagons?ThanksRhonald

Also look behind the rear wheels and in front and back of the front

are (below the hood hinges). If these pieces are not installed properly
stuff can get behind them to bad effect.

Talk with Rusty, (800) 741-5252, to see if they are still available.Ok, will do.

As one of the other responders said, it has a torque converter with a
higher stall speed. That will help starting off the line, but apparently
will lower fuel mileage.

there a group for TD Wagons?

Well, not totally true. Diesel exhaust might kill you but it will take
some time. Those particles are not so good for the lungs over the long haul.

That means it is a Diesel. Diesel exhaust will not kill you or your

[MBZ] compression testing

2011-03-04 Thread R A Bennell
The thread on the tick suggested compression testing and that got me to
wondering about doing one.

Anyone have good advice on testing an old 300D 115 normally aspirated
engine?

Am I correct that one must remove the injectors and use those holes for
the tester?

What happens with the diesel fuel that should then be shooting out all
over at high pressure when one is testing? How does one stop that?

I bought a compression tester a couple of years back but it is sitting
in the tool box and has yet to be used.

Re: [MBZ] compression testing

2011-03-04 Thread R A Bennell

Thanks guys. Good to know.

Anything else you can think of that I need to know? I think I bought the
spacers, shields, whatever they are called that one puts in behind the
injectors so would replace them too I guess. Any likelyhood that I will
have trouble getting the injectors out? I seem to recall people talking
about carbon etc. Or am I confusing that with the glowplugs? When does
one use the reamer doodad? Does my engine have the removable
pre-combustion chambers or whatevers behind the injectors (sorry but I
am not sure that is what they are called). Do I recall someone talking
about slidehammers to remove? Why would one remove them??

Lots of questions and very little knowledge except for what I hear on
here as this is my one and only diesel and I do not have any local
friends who have done this sort of thing.

And if you put a mityvac on the shutoff solenoid or hold down the stop

[MBZ] OT computer problem

2011-02-25 Thread R A Bennell

I use a service that lets me into government databases for land titles etc.
Unfortunaetly it is a bit of a dinosaur I guess.

I let Java update itself to jre6u24 and that caused problems. The applet
won't load.
The help desk tells me, just uninstall that and revert to the previous
version which is jre6u23 and all should be well.

Did that but it still does not work.

Neither Explorer nor Firefox seems able to see Java.

Anyone have ideas?

We have uninstalled and reinstalled various versions of Java and nothing
seems to change the fact that it does not show up in the browers.

I spent about 3 hours on the phone with a fellow on the help desk at IBM
yesterday without success.

Not very do-able in Winnipeg these days. Minus 30 this morning. Even
automatic car washes give up and close when it gets too cold. I ran my
truck through on Wednesday as it was only minus 15 or so and it would
sit in the sun long enough to dry out and not freeze solid. That is the
best time to wash in winter as it then stays clean for a bit until the
weather again warms up enough to make the roads messy.

Hehe.

I'll take a bucket and car soap any day. Cheaper, cleaner, and no nasty crap
left over.

The one time I remember going through one of those touchless washes, it
sprayed the entire car with this red, green, blue glop crap after the wash,
let it sit for half a minute, sprayed it off, then air-knifed everything
dry.

Windows were streaky for a while...

If I read it right, you are making a plate that attaches to the engine
in lieu of the original mount for the oil filter. I assume one would
then run some form of aftermarket oil filter relocation setup to move
the filter onto the inner fender. The purpose being to provide more
space near the engine and perhaps to make it easier to change the oil
and use a more conventional screw on filter.

Did I get it right?

If so, what are you recommending for the relocation kit and what filter

The short run-down is, they'll be 1/2 thick and contoured to fit, all
mounting holes drilled, and with your choice of hole size and

turbo/gauge feed ports.
Price is $25 per-plate with 5.50 flat-rate shipping.

What think you all of the appropriate filter? I know the adapters are

with what filter would be appropriate for an old diesel. Do I need to
worry about oil pressure or the viscosity issues? Do I need a filter

Probably data entry. Punch cards and feed, then print out and return.

I knew someone who did that sort of thing here. They did not do the
punch cards to my knowledge. They had a computer and places like
accounting firms would create the punch cards and deliver them to my
fellow who would run them through the computer and print the data out
over night and have the printouts delivered the next day. He made good
money.

When the lease on the computer ended, he asked IBM what they wished to
do with the machine. They asked him to haul it out to the dumpster. He
said that hurt as he had paid them about a million dollars on the lease.

What you SHOULD have done, is to keep the Ford as a back up vehicle. Big
enough and old enough to be used somewhat informally to haul whatever.
Useful when you need a vehicle while you repair one of the daily drivers
or while you look for your next car after having sold your current one
(which we KNOW you will do). AND of course, great on those miserable
winter days when it snows or rains or whatever since it is big, sits
high and has 4 wheel drive. PLUS, worth very little and not likely to
depreciate a whole lot more unless it really rusts or has some major
catastrophic failure.

It was an Expedition (big sucker). I don't think we could have done

Plus, we got them way down on the Charger and my wife was a master
negotiator on the trade. We originally looked at a 2008 Charger.
They wanted $16,900 (which is way too much). We got them down to
$15,000 and they offered $2500 for the Expedition. I had a dealer
friend of mine check the manheim auctions and the Expedition was
going for $3000. We couldn't make a deal on the 08 Charger for the
$250 payment my wife wanted. So, we called another dealer right from
the showroom and found a 2010 for $16,900. They started falling all
over themselves to make a deal. Finally they showed us the car we
bought. They had it priced at $17,900. Edmunds prices it at
$19,000. I think that's a little high. NADA shows $17,900. Kelly
Bluebook $19,300. Also, it was a certified used. That doesn't do
anything for me immeadiately because its still under factory
warranty. But, it increases the powertrain warranty.

Anyway, they told us they would sell it for $15,900 and give us $3000
for our Expedition. We said no. My wife was awesome. She kept
saying, the payment has to be $250 a month and we won't go longer on
the loan. They got it to within $8 and she still said no. We were
there for almost 5 hours. Finally, they ended up selling their car
for $15,900 and giving us $4400 for the expedition. I had a
potential buyer for my car for $5000. But, I don't think I could have
got them down their car if I didn't have a trade.

Either way, we feel like we got a great deal. And most importantly,
my wife is happy. When she is happy, that means she won't be so
eagle-eyed about my cars. So, in other words, she has a nice car and
now I can get back to my car buying/selling fun.

the driver's door lock on my '78 240D would work. We had some rain the other day
and the thing has had a tendency to freeze anyway plus its been real cold.
Went out and shot some lock stuff into the lock and then tried it, totally
frozen, can't even get the key all the way in. The little door on this lock
doesn't close, guess I should fix that...

So I go get my torch out of the garage.Guess what, a torch thats sat in the 0F
garage overnight won't light at all...

So its inside warming up and I guess I'll put a butane lighter in the trunk
(trunk lock works perfectly of course) so when the lock inevitable freezes up on
my return I'll be ready. The butane lighter is easier to warm up under my coat
than the propane torch is...

What really amazes me is that they appear to be proud of the fact that
they have deliberately chosen to not move ahead. I suppose it may be a
bit like choosing to drive a mid 70's MB diesel - eccentric to say the
least. BUT as I suggested to them, photos really help to explain things
in so many cases and people are often unwilling to go through the
process of putting the photo on a hosting site so that they can send a

If y'all want to read a good book, look for Matterhorn. Cannot recall
the name of the author but can get that too if anyone needs it.
A novel about the Viet Nam war and a group of Marines. Very good. I just
finished it.

My elder son wants to read it next.

I recommended it to my younger son and his response was a somewhat
sheepish look and an aw, you know I don't read books. Very sad for me
as I think some of the best things in life are books.

My elder son is a bit of an academic I suppose. He has a Masters Degree
in Architecture and is currently an intern with an architectural firm.

The younger one is a final level auto mechanic apprentice and as such
much more of a hands on person. We do need both in this world but I
find it hard to believe that he does not enjoy reading as most of the
folks in our family are avid readers.

Randy who thinks perhaps his grade school education has failed my
younger son in some manner.

Yes, I assume so too. I had a quick look at the photo link in one of the

I had a 68 Chevy C10 for a long time and often wondered if a 5 cyl MB

Sold it a couple of years ago so no longer a consideration really.

Shouldn't be too hard to set up a propane injector into the intake

Unlikely to increase the value by doing something like that but you

The engine costs less but then you have to fabricate or rig parts for

On first thought, one thinks that more advertising is good and that they

there are things they do not wish to endorse, like, drugs, porn,

I can understand it. SBC are very common and there are lots of good
aftermarket parts to make power. Once the hood is closed, no one really
knows what is under there unless you tell them.

So, if you like the car but need an engine, I can see swapping to a SBC.
There were kits available to put them in Jags - that was probably an
improvement in most cases.

If you are driving what amounts to a beater Benz, why not add some
power? Esp late model Vortec engines - pretty reliable etc.

[MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread R A Bennell

So, to start with, I know, I am a lawyer so why am I asking you folks??

I don't know and am wondered if any of you might know is the basic answer.

Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose the
fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I
sometimes use it to take photos while driving if I see something
interesting. It occurred to me recently, that this is probably no
longer acceptable. If an officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am
going to get the ticket and I doubt he has to prove I was actually
phoning someone. The phone company should be able to provide evidence
that I was not on a call at that time but that might not be sufficient
to get one off - and one would have to waste the time going to fight the
ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic
devices rather than cell phones.

Well, my car is in the garage for the duration of the cold weather so
not much to do on it for a bit. I did buy a new set of H4 headlights for
it and will install them come spring. May even go the route of relays
and higher wattage bulbs if the H4's that I have are not a significant
improvement.

I have other issues too like seats that are disintegrating but again,
that may have to wait for some warmer weather.

I did look up the local statute and regulations to see if it will likely
pose a problem to use my cell phone camera. I suspect that I may get
away with it so long as I have my Bluetooth doodad on the visor so I can
show an officer that I do have the ability to use it hands free. The
regs say one cannot even look at or hold the phone but I am guessing
that I can just tell them I was checking the battery level or checking
to see if it was actually on, and will get away with it.

Not sure what they might say about the camera issue. The regs do not say
anything about the use of cameras but do say you cannot use a device
that includes a cell phone.

letter. We find ways to avoid them.
For example, a friend who is a sales rep frequently gets calls from
customers while he's driving.
When he was driving through counties that had the no cell phone law,
he would put his cell phone between two pieces of bread and hold it up
to his ear. The single time a cop stopped him, he dropped the bread
slices and the cell phone on the floor and picked up a real sandwich.

The conversation went something like this:
You were talking on a cell phone and that is illegal while you are
driving.

I was eating a sandwich.
Why did you have it up to your ear?
So I could see where I was going.
Where is the sandwich?
He picked up a real sandwich which had a bite out of it.
Where is your cellphone?
He pretended to look for it and then retrieved it from the floor.
The cop went back to his car and apparently called headquarters.
You can go., said the cop.
That was the only time he was stopped, and he won't have that
problem again since he bought a new car which has a
built-in microphone and speaker.

Perhaps you can cut a hole in a slice of bread for the lens,
Randy, and use your cellphone camera the same way.
Of course, if you were a lawyer in Florida you would have
nothing to worry about since cops never ticket lawyers unless
they're blind drunk or politicians in a different party than the
sheriffs or chiefs.

I saw in the sheriffs list in the local paper where a woman had
been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon because she had
one of those little pepper spray cannisters in her purse.
Interesting.

Thanks for your input. Reading on the internet suggests that Maytag and

availability. I found out that one can still buy a new Speedqueen
wringer that is a clone of the old ones made in about 1955 if my memory
serves to be correct, now manufactured in Saudia Arabia. They are
apparently so exactly the same that the new parts will fit the old ones.
Parts are likely expensive, but if one wants them, that may be the price
one must pay. Interesting (to me at least).

I have been in touch with a fellow on another forum who has been very
helpful. He has explained how to make a puller to remove the pin
without hammering on it. Also a big wrench for removing the piece
below it. We might just get this thing apart far enough to see why it
leaks without destroying it.

We have a Maytag Atlantis washer - about 5 years old - one of the last
versions with the agitator I believe as now the top loaders are like the
front loaders and do not have an agitator. We might decide to upgrade
the primary washer and relegate the existing one to dirty duty if this
one does not work out. Time will tell.

My good wife has decided she needs/wants an old style wringer washing
machine for doing dirty jobs like rugs, rags, and my younger son's dirty
work clothes (he is a mechanic). She is reluctant to put this stuff in
the regular washer. We looked around and found one that looked good but
is obviously old and apparently has not been used in a while. We bought
it and hauled it home and have discovered an issue. It leaks like a
seive (sp?). A bit of looking leads me to believe it is leaking in the
middle of the tub around the hole where the agitator spindle projects up
into the tub. I am hoping that whatever is in there as a seal is
somewhat generic as I don't know what will be available in parts for
this old beast. It is a Simplicity brand. Maybe should have held out for
a Maytag or SpeedQueen based upon what I see on the net but a bit late
for that now so will try to fix it.

My first task is to get enough parts off that I can see the offending
seal. There is an aluminum - pot metal doodad surrounding the main
agitator shaft. There is a pin through it near the top. I am told it
will be a tapered pin and to ensure I drive it out in the correct
direction.Should not be a problem as the one side appears to have a head
on it - unless it has been peened over but it does not look like that -
quite evenly round etc.

Then I need to get the aluminum doodad off of the shaft. I am told I
need to heat it but to be careful as it may be zamac which is easy to
overheat. Will use propane torch and so should be easy enough to be careful.

Once I get the agitator drive off of the shaft, I should be able to see
what is under it. Right now, the bottom of the agitator drive is about 3
inches in diameter and covers the whole area.

Anyone got experience with this sort of thing and have any good
suggestions on how to go about it?

She has been soaking Tom's dirty clothing in the laundry tub and
rinsing and then wringing it out by hand before putting it in the washer
but that is not easy. I know as I have helped wring stuff out. We maybe
should have gone with a second automatic washer to do just that stuff
