It’s posted at PP, too, I believe.

Either that or I saw it in a National CL search I run.

Selling my 82 240D, manual everything. New looking seats out of the same year
300D. 272,000 miles, shows no sign of powertrain problems. Some rust but mostly
cosmetic, exhaust rattles and the muffler is in the trunk with most of an
exhaust to replace the current. Needs rear shocks but planning on putting some
on in a week or 2 unless a buyer is ok as is. I've been using as a daily for 9
months, block heater works great. New battery in Dec. Vacuum system needs all
new lines. Asking $1200, shittier Pontiac's go for that much. Honestly would be
a great project car, just enough is wrong that it'd be a joy to restore and
probably wouldn't cost much. Except the windshield would cost a bit, you don't
notice it while driving but it's delaminated in a couple spots you can see in

Re: [MBZ] 240 D Resonator

2017-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Walker still makes some older stuff. I was able to source a resonator for the
300SEL from them and it was exact fit and far cheaper than anyone else. I even
got the production drawings for it and checked the dimensions and they matched
the OE part exactly. I think the price on it was like $175.00 or thereabouts.

I’m not saying they have something for a car that old, but it’s possible. When
I was looking for the 300SEL resonator I was surprised at the number of older
applications they still had stuff for.

Did you see the episode where Clarkson brings home a jet fighter on a
flatbed and drops it in his front yard? Mama was not particularly
amused, but seemed used to his, um, eccentricities.

I would do that with a MiG, put it out by the road. There is this woman
Annie Caroline who lives here on this island, whose husband was a pilot
of some sort at some time in his life, maybe retired airline or
something. I think he died a few years ago and she moved into town
maybe, she had a horse farm/stable/boarding place. She is pretty
whack. Anyway I went over to their house one day for something, it's
back in the woods off the road pretty far, there was a D-18 on a
pedestal at their front gate. I so wanted that thing... it was totally
awesome.

Re: [MBZ] 240 Mercedes Owners

2016-09-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Haha.. I hope you understand what "MiG" stands for... "Money in Guns"...
take all the letters in the word AIRPLANE, move them around any way you
want, and it will never spell CHEAP...

If you thought putting a Mercedes into roadworthy status was a challenge..
try putting a Russian airplane back together with everything written in
well.. Russian.. and taken apart in well.. Russia... by folks who
really hated ... well.. Russians.. then go fly in it..

I just bought the holdings of a Polish fellow who owned 26 Mig aircraft

he

bought at the fall of the USSR. When Russia stopped being USSR, his

Some SL(C) hoods were aluminum, as were some SEC hoods. Mostly not,
I would think. Certainly not on a 240D. I'm thinking your sap found
some preexisting pinholes in the paint and migrated through. And
the sap's hygroscopic nature also brought in water which did the
dirty deed.

[MBZ] 240 hood - strange spots

2008-08-02 Thread Wilton Strickland
'Bout 15 years ago, I was washing my 80 240D one day and discovered 3 little
spots of a clear substance that I thought was terpentine (pine sap) on top
of the hood. My thought was that wife had parked under a pine tree, which
had dripped sap onto the hood. One spot was ~1/4 inch dia., the others
smaller. I didn't have any solvent handy right then, so I delayed removing
the spots. Few days later, I had the solvent and started to remove the
"terpentine" spots, but discovered that the substance had "gone through" the
paint, i. e., the paint had taken the shape of the original spots that I saw
but appeared to be undamaged other than having taken on the raised shape of
the substance. When I first saw the spots they were clear/colorless - I
could readily see that they were lying on the surface of the paint. 'Few
days later when I started to clean them off, the paint was on TOP of the
substance - the paint had assumed the shape of the spots! Then, I couldn't
clean the spots off without cutting the paint away. Because I couldn't get
to the substance without cutting holes in the paint, I delayed doing
anything. Several months later, the hood had little holes in it where the
spots had been. 'Still like that when uninsured driver suddenly made left
turn across in front of wife coupla yrs later, totaling the 240D. Any idea
what the substance on the hood was? It was something that went through the
paint without visible damage to the paint and then ate holes in the metal
hood, which I think may have been aluminum - not sure.

That mental picture and your comments certainly made me laugh out loud!

something to indicate i am crazy in a middle aged white guy kind of way.
i'm a pretty courteous driver though. i will drive on the sidewalk though
to get around stupidity in front of me.

i like jamaican food and in this area, no white every goes to a jamaican
place. so we see a new one having opened up and i have to check it out. in
my excitement to get out, i forget to secure the white german, and she
escapes from the car.

now picture this -- you are an african jamaican american black enjoying some
goat and you are watching a 500 lb old white guy with long white hair
fighting with a noisy german shepherd in the parking lot in front of you?

after securing the german, i walk in to dead silence. then i ask "what the

An idiot, all-inclusive, driving either a truck or an old Benz.

Having been exposed to a LOT of really bad drivers, up around Boston
(where you expect certain stupidities in certain situations, so you can
be prepared) to Houston (where the stupidity is just absolutely totally
random and much more dangerous but you can get some clues), I take great
pains to be a good citizen on the road, and have instilled that in daughter.

When I drive with my daughter, we have a game. When I see someone do
something stupid I make a prediction of the driver's, uh,
characteristics. She chastises me for being "---ist" of some sort.
Then when we get to where we can see the driver's characteristics, I am
90+% correct in my predictions. I then gloat, and she has to
acknowledge begrudgingly that there might be some accuracy to my
"---ist" stereotyping. As she is a new driver I view this as a
pre-emptive assessment technique that can allow one to predict stupidity
before it will most likely happen.

I dropped a guy a note today on the 560SEL I mentioned in an early post.
Wished him luck in getting his price, but if not, keep my email and drop me
a line in a month or two. I'm not very good at haggling, and I'd rather
just let people figure out for themselves when they're asking too much. I
left the door open for him to adjust his price.

2008-02-12 Thread Bill R
I stopped to look at an old TD yesterday. No rust, but the paint was not
good and the wood was separating, and it looked ratty inside. Price on the
window was $3,400 so I didn't even ask about it. Been there for a few
weeks, and probably will be a lot longer.

If she is actually learning to speak Japanese from watching a cartoon, then

Mine ran OK, generally. There was the time I drove from Denver
(Lowry AFB) to Los Angeles and back. It was fun to drive through Nevada at
a border-to-border average speed of 105 mph.

The PO had removed the thermostat, so I put one in while in LA. I stopped
overnight on the way back, went out to the car the next, very cold
morning, started up and drove away. After awhile, I noticed a trail of oil
smoke behind me. I ended up having to stop every 60 - 100 miles to clean
the fouled spark plugs.

When I finally got a chance to tear it down in the Lowry Auto Hobby shop,
I noticed one of the piston skirts had disintegrated and pieces of oil
scraper ring were scattered around the engine, especially stuck in some
goo near the timing chain. I was quite fortunate the engine was still
running when I took it apart, and even more fortunate it didn't come apart
when I was zooming across Nevada.

I remember working on the shifting linkage in the driver's compartment --
that was quite a challenge.

Actually, I wish I still owned that Lotus - I could probably take care of it
now. But I'd end up getting frustrated trying to keep it running. Also,

2006-02-04 Thread Tom Scordato
Three years ago I bought a 1977 300D from a guy in Maine who had it for less
han six months. When I had test drove it I had never, never driven any
Mercedes anywhere new or old in my life. I fell in love with it and bought
it.

A few reasons made me look. I had a little extra cash that year. I figured
steam ships and trains went to diesel. My mechanic said "man you drive so
much you should get a diesel car, but only a Mercedes diesel"

I just purchased a 1979 240D with low mileage so it continues. By the way I
have never had either to an authorized Mercedes Benz dealership. Much I do
myself and with trusted mechanics.

If speed is you thing get a Porsche. If a steady safe ride on the highway
is your thing these cars are built for that. They are slow up hills but
faster than riding a bike so that is good news. Sometimes people get
impatient when it takes a few minutes to come up to highway speed.

Craig's list is a good source. Monkey adds, BigLot, Cars.com. Autotrader
(look for private owner listings), eBay but it is a sellers market is
another source. Remember if looking for low mileage, extreme claims of low
mileage require extreme proof (maintence records showing dates and
mileage/review title look for descrepancies), otherwise assume an odometer
has been changed out.

Hi Joe,

I actually don't have much help to offer (rather new myself) but your post
just reminds me of where I was not long ago. We wish you the best in finding
that 240 you desire. I found that looking on AutoTrader.com and the like
quite useless (most are overpriced, some seemed real shady - a lot of
dealers - and none near my home). Quite often, listers will post ads that
they have found. A lot of them look nice, but I never did see one anywhere
near my area. I wound up finding mine through my brother who spotted it
while out on a walk. Just wanted to say best of luck.

Brian,

For some reason the 114/115 early tail lights either had metal contacts
available to the second 5w lamp or not. Gump came to me with no brass
tongue thing to put power to the second bulb, so no light.

When you turn on the lights you normally twist to the right. To
activate fog, pull out one click, for back fog, another click or all
the way toward you.

I'd say if they don't have upward cutoffs, they're not really fog

standard DOT pattern leaves just in front of the bumper.

Also, what's up with that feature that allows you to just turn on one
directional lamp steady (not flashing) - one side at a time. ?

City parking in certain cow-path streets in some old European cities
mandates a parked car being lit, at least on the street side. Half
lights draw half power, allowing the battery to live through the night.

Those are parking lights that are lit, not the turn/hazard lights.

The stock Mercedes fogs, while mounted too high to be truely good fog
lights, do have that sharp cutoff. It's interesting to look at the
pattern against a wall. They project a wide, flat "bar" of light. The
idea is to illuminate the road and the pavement markings directly ahead
of the car, without projecting light upwards that will be scattered by
the fog and reflected back into your eyes.

The yellow color was also once thought to reduce glare scattered by the
fog, but studies since then have found a white light works just as well.

Kinda. It's probably because of what called "bridge law" and because
it's practical - and it's not just it WA.

Bridge law: (CAUTION: This is a super simplified version!!) The maximum
allowed gross vehicle weight in reduced if the distance between axles
is not enough. Thus a 5-axle truck/trailer is normally limited to
80,000 lbs GVW., but if it's a really short trailer it will be
overweight if the GVW is 80,000 lbs.

Practical reason. The truck can dump _without_ unhitching from the
trailer.

Philip, always happy to drive past a weight scale.

Yes indeed they do. And yes indeed they are. When it's so
foggy that you find yourself rolling down your window to stick
your head out to get a bit better visibility, _that's_ when
having real fog lights (extra wide patterns with a sharp
top cutoff, and not those stupid Subaru and Dodge pickup
floodlights) can really help keep you on the road. And
in those circumstances it can also help to be able to
turn off the headlights and run only on the fogs. Days
when you wish you could have stayed (or already be) home.

Intriguing idea. The concept is that drivers behind you in adverse
conditions (like fog or powdery snow) can see you, but they are not blinded
by you, nor do they perceive that you are either pulled off on the shoulder,
or heading toward them??

ago. Only with me, we were stopped at a light. I was directly to the bus's
right (you know, where the driver can look out that big glass door and see
you). The light turned, we started. I forget at the moment who crossed the
intersection first, but shortly thereafter there was a bus stop. He pulled
on over and I was forced to brake hard to avoid getting wedged.

When I confronted him, he revealed that he DID see me, but that he thought
he should have right of way (at least this is what I got out of his broken
English - he said "No - I was there!!").

Not without sympathy for drivers, I turned the guy (who refused to give me
his name) in. I'm not out to get people in trouble, but I just couldn't see
that driver's atrocious judgement going unchecked.

Just to present the drivers' side: I have heard, and understand, complaints
regarding bicylces being too far out in the roadway. We don't have the right
to do that - we are required to stay as far right as we can. Also
frustrating to drivers is passing a bicycle, only to have it pass you as you
have to stop. This gets repeated several times.

Diesel content: At the time of my incident, my current 240D was living in
that town, I just didn't know it yet. Or that I wanted one, since in that
weather, one is able to commute on the bike year-round (how I long for those
days).

still don't follow the law. Unfortunately, it was several years ago and

I dunno, personally I think the dump trailers in Washington state that

The worst situation for visibility is getting behind an empty 7-axle log

Re: [MBZ] 240 vs SD Go Trucks

2006-01-09 Thread Brian Chase
I certainly don't want to get into a battle between truckers and non
truckers. I just rant on certain topics that push my buttons, and peoples'
driving behavior is one of the biggest.

I knew we would have a healthy trucker contingent among the dieselers. God
love 'em. In fact my very mother drives a city bus for a living, and one of
the things she says is that nobody wants to get behind a bus, so all sorts
of people dash out in front of her. I also see people engaging in similar
behavior with semis. I know if I drove one for a living, I'd be absolutely
steaming each of the 10 times that happened to me per day.

I just have a strong aversion to the sort of primal behavior that says "I'm
bigger than you, so you'd better move." By no means is this limited to
semis. The smaller your vehicle, the less respect you get. It's subconscious
and automatic. It also applies to conflicts between bicycles and even the
smallest compact.

Yes, it is smart to move out of the way of trouble, but it's pitiful to see
the effect that different vehicles have on people. When I see some dude all
amped-up on the sense of power that his gnarly full-size 4x4 gives him, I
just think you know, eventually you, just like me, have to step out of your
vehicle and plant your feet on the ground. And if someone like that gets
aggressive with me on the roadway, I often invite them personally to do just
that. If you can prove you're tough face to face and empty-handed, then
you'll get my respect.

Also interesting, and enjoyable, is the range of personalities on this list.
Some of us have run off with this thread in the direction of driving
behaviors and the basal human causes behind them (actually that last part
has just been me), and some have cheerfully gone on about which chassis
types are quicker. This is why it's so fun to look at this stuff when I
should be working.

"How many of those are the fault of the car? Just because a truck was

Very true, but as the largest thing on the road the damage done no mater who
is at fault is exponential compared to a car. Even more reason these tuck
drivers should be ultra conservative

"Yup. But there's nothing inherently dangerous about driving for 12
hours a day. And when the job pays by the mile, who would not want to

Even if it involves staying in the left land, driving two inches from a cars
butt, speeding and breaking many other infractions. I disagree if it is
like "walk with a dozen happy puppies trying to greet me" as you say Phil
this takes major concentration especially in a truck. The whole trucking
philosophy / payment schedule that you are trying to push the envelope with
a 50-ton vehicle stinks.

"One consequence is that a truck driver
is often reluctant to slow down because it can take so long to get
back up to speed. (One truck I drove, with a full load on level ground

that the frustration of lost momentum at the bottom of a hill that can
result in losing 4 gears on the climb rather than 1 gear - all
because an "idiot 4-wheeler" was doing something stupid"

Too bad, as a trucker that is the life you chose. If I am a doctor I do not
complain about blood. If I am a professional football player I do not
complain about getting hit. If I am a pilot I do not complain about altitude
sickness. Truckers should have the brains to slow down. Safety is just not
paramount among many of them. Trains had it worse and slower problems, be
thankful for 55 mph. It they get there an hour later without pushing the
envelope that is a good thing. Every truck regardless of what some

Phil your argument is the same I have heard for 20 years. Trucks want the
same thing that a two-ton car wants. They want to pass at will, they want
to speed, they want the same accountability as a car. That is like asking
an oil tanker to abide by the same rules as a sailboat.

Phil, I could go on, but my arguments are not going to convince you or your
peers. It is a whole different mindset/way of thinking. Truckers think the
country would not function with out them yet fail to realize the poor
person, doctor , teacher, engineer, ect. matter just as much to keep this
country going. Difference is most of them comuting are not being paid
directly to move up and down the road. The vast majority of the "jerks in
the cars" are subsidizing the very trucking industry by paying the lions
share of the interstate taxes for the roads most of the truckers run on.

they seem less threatening. In the 4 years I worked as an EMT the score was
'0' big rig drivers [and yes, they could have caused some of the 4 wheelers

I find most truckers are courteous, professional drivers, and are
generally nice to me if I'm nice to them. (How many of you have ever

most of them do it superbly. It's just that the occasional bad apple
stands out, because the consequences of their actions can be so massive.

There are problems in the industry, but most of them aren't so much the
fault of the drivers, but rather companies trying to squeeze out every
last cent of profit. One study in Michigan found that half the trucks
on the road were over the legal weight limit.

Yup. But there's nothing inherently dangerous about driving for 12
hours a day. And when the job pays by the mile, who would not want to
squeeze as many mile as practical? Add to that the nutty scheduling
that dispatches hand out, plus shippers and receivers that pay _no_
attention to the amount of wasted driver's time.

Here's a typical situation. Dispatch says "I have a 500 mile load for
you. Pick appointment is 8AM, delivery appointment is 8PM" That's
about 10 hrs of driving and 12 hr to do it. No problem! So I arrive
and check in at the shippers at 7:30. At 8:45 I'm assigned a door. At
8:50 I "bump the dock". Two pallets are loaded, but then it's 9:00 and
break time. At 9:30 they start loading again. At 10:00, the truck is
loaded, but the office is slow and it's nearly 10:30 by the time I
have the papers and am pulling out of the yard. Now I have 9.5 hours
to get there. Well, if I don't eat and there's no traffic,or bad
weather, or construction I'll be fine. I call ahead to the receiver to
see how tight the appointment is. They often say "You can't show up
more than 1 hour early, and if you're more than 15 minutes late we'll
have to reschedule you for tomorrow or the next day." Missing an
appointment is bad. Not only might I have to waste a day or more, it
could also result it penalties for me and/or the company I drive for.

I'll quickly point out that I think staying alive is worth more than 2
days wages, loosing a customer, and lost bonuses - but it is
motivation to keep moving!!!

and they drive those things like Porsches. Big difference in rig

No, not like a Porsche! Trust me, a 240D with an tired engine and a

Top speed may be faster, but acceleration with a load is slw, even

Something will need to be done about this nightmare...satellite
tracking of each truck to measure/report speed is one answer, but

 I prefer the 126 over the 123 though --- -- -

I'd heard things about SDs being slower than Ds being slower than
CDs, but the weights of the cars are not a whole lot different.
Although I could get away with using a coupe most of the time, I've
found I really appreciate the cavernous trunk and
stretch-out-in-the-back-seat passenger room of the SD rather
frequently, not to mention all the other chassis and interior
amenities and the bigger brakes. I find SD performance and handling
surprisingly good--it's a very well-balanced car that can be pushed
very hard, on rough, twisting roads, with confidence and comfort. For
autocrossing, you'd probably be a bit ahead with a CD. For real-life
use and road driving, though, I've found the SD to be very
satisfying--Especially since you can generally pick up one for
CHEAPER than a coupe, all else being equal.
