This is a very difficult question. It would be too hard to decide between
Mozart, Bach and Wagner. I enjoy listening to Mozart the most because of the
variety and I just like his better. But, Bach was so prolific and the Sonata

And if you had to choose ONE single composition, what would it be?

For the first question, if I had to take a single composer's entire
body of work to a desert island and never listen to anything else,
it'd be Mozart, hands down.

However, if I had to choose one record---IMHO Beethoven's 9th Symphony
is the greatest artistic achievement of Western civilization.

The greatest what? The greatest composer? The greatest composer in his
style/era? The term classical music is confusing because "Classical" is a
style or period or era. J.S. Bach and Beethoven are in different eras/styles.
Bach is in the Baroque era/period, it's pretty difficult to compare them. It
would be like asking who is the greatest Sports figure? When the question
might be who is the greatest football player? It's pretty hard to compare a
football player and a tennis player. Likewise, it is difficult to compare
composers from different eras/periods.

So, Bach is arguably the greatest of the Baroque period/style. And arguably,
Beethoven the greatest of the Classical period. EXCEPT, ole Ludwig only wrote
9 symphonies. So, I think Mozart gets the nod. Some people would include
Beethoven in the Romantic period, but I think that is incorrect because his
symphonies followed most of the strict formalities of the classical periods.
He might be a transition between the two. For me, the greatest of the
Romantic period is Wagner.

Okay in over 3 years I have not figured it out what does SWMBA stand
for?

I can't remember if it was originally a reference to Jill Cathey or
Clay's wife, but it stands for She Who Must Be Annoyed. (last word is
normally Obeyed).

I believe it actually applies to both. In my wife's case, at least
the term applies to an apparent a compulsion rather than any kind of
a directive to me. (She can't _not_ be generally annoyed. At least,
according to _my_ observation...)

Regarding the car warpath, I think there's a reason that Clay's and
my wife got along so well the one time they met. Sounds like _both_
believe they are entitled to choose our hobbies for us, along with
every other little detail in their environs.

One of my dream cars if I had the cash and a place to properly garage it would
be am early 60's Cadillac 75 Series limo with the divider window.

These don't seat 6, but they are a wonderful ride and can be found relatively
cheap.

Of course, if money were no object then would shift to a late 40's/early 50's
170V MB series. If you have ever seen one of these cars you can understand.
They are very well appointed inside and have a fair amount of room.

How's about a Checker cab? They seat a fair number in the back and can have
dividers, too.

I'd forgotten that a failing TO destroys the turbo. If it were a case of the

when it takes out your turbo I'll laugh like a hyena. You've been warned, when

Oooh. My dream is a TD turbo, manual transmission, manual
heater controls, power windows.

I think I'll probably have to build it to actually get one.

Meanwhile, the family doesn't really fit in a 123 anymore. I

The odds of a device failing increase with every use.
I'd forgotten that a failing TO destroys the turbo. If it were a case of the
thing just plugging up and you having less power I'd say "eh, whatever" but
when it takes out your turbo I'll laugh like a hyena. You've been warned, when
it fails be prepared to be mocked.

My sympathies to you then, since the early pattern indicates a shortfall of
loyalty to "old things" expect to be sent to the scrap heap as a dotage and
replaced with a "new pretty model"

Cars are so much easier than women, if you drive another one and enjoy it
they never complain, you can kick the tire if it displeases you, and even
leave it unattended for months without ever a disparaging word. It's
suspension may sag, but you can get replacement parts, and in 50 years I've
never heard a car ask "does this make my ass look fat?". :<))

I have actively given up on Gump. The laundry list of needs on this
car really are excessive. I love her, but she is the equivalent of the
aged grandma who you can continue pouring cash into the healthcare
system and you only prolong her death.

I have to let go and just remember the sweet times we had. Also found
a nice euro TD with manual trans that fits my present needs better.
Gump was wonderfully idiosyncratic, but she really needed a full body
off restoration to continue living for the long term. Doing nickel
and dime upgrades was not doing her the justice she deserved.

The newer car is more cash, but SWMBA sees only the logic of newer
being less wrong than money pit. Newer money pit, but I can get her
buy off on the TD than putting that cash into Gump. She only sees
Gump as always needing something and not of value for being old. I
will remind her of her outlook when she reaches that advanced age
where she is wearing out and needs things done. I will then point out
that she has ceased to have value and I should be getting a newer
model. One without the sags and wrinkles. Able to produce vigorously.

because you have been faithful and are worth the effort regardless of the

Re: [MBZ] GUMP is DEAD

2011-07-25 Thread redghost

Some version of SWMBO - she who must be obeyed.

Maybe she who must be answered?

or a typo?

I "think" the original came from the Rumpole of the Bailey books as
Horace Rumpole, the old barrister hack referred to his wife in that manner.

What do you mean "?" for the name of the present E320. I think you already
have a name - the Snookmobile. That is a great name. It is a name with an
illustrious history. You can continue the tradition of the "Snookmobile" name.
It's sort of like how they keep building new starships in Star Trek and
renaming them Enterprise. You can call your E320 "Snookmobile" Do the name
proud, my friend.

Re: [MBZ] GUMP is DEAD

2011-07-24 Thread Curt Raymond
Which reminds me I finally named my '84 190D. Walking back to the car the other
night in the airport parking lot I was thinking "What a fine little automobile,
I shall call you Ducky".
I'd been watching NCIS on the plane if anybody gets that reference.

Then the little b@$tard proceeded to try to overheat all the way home. A quart
of added coolant in the morning and everything is happy again. Need to spend
some time tracking the leak.

I am beginning to suspect SWMBA is in a tizzy about #1 boy going to
college and is making a massive sweep of the property in an attempt to
find meaning in her life. Chix love the boy, whereas #2 boy is not
favored of chix, because he does not lavish praise upon them or do his
chores related to them. Told him if I treated him the way he cares
for the chickens, he would die of thirst, but would be well on his way
to starvation as he died.

I remember in 1974 begin of my life in the 'free market' slavery
market - I asked the food company biologist about the egg scare. He
was an old dude and told me that eggs are balanced relative to
cholesterol. Plus, you are raising those chix in a stress free
environs and much better food than they receive in the high stress,
high output environ/food at an egg farm. I picked eggs at an egg
pharm for years one day per week. Yuck! Purely disgusting in early
'70's - probably much worse today. Eggs are delicious when the chix
are treated decently like yours are. Fuggedabout losing the chix -
keep'em.
