Re: [MBZ] Success!!!

2024-06-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
No not really.  I had thought of that, using some sort of small
hydraulic bottle jack but the issue is that the cup ends that fit on the
intermediate shaft (both sides) sit up inside the frame rail on both
sides.  You can sorta reach in there from the bottom, there is a bit of
opening but not a lot, and maybe with more clearance (car up higher than
I have it) and a mallet and rod of some sort it might be possible, but
then that might damage the bearings on the intermediate shaft.  Plus
getting some tension on the cable would be kinda hard given how the
whole thing is set up.

The main issue seems to be that there are retaining rings in a slot on
both the intermediate shaft and the axles both sides, and these have to
be compressed or something as the axle is being pulled out.  This will
probably be some sort of issue putting it back together, the WIS shows a
compression tool like those things for getting fuel line fittings off, I
have a set of those.  This one they show is $150!!!

2024-06-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yes.  $400. It's basically two bars that fit either end of the inside
part of the axle with threaded rods that connect the ends of each bar
and the slide hammer shaft screws into one of the bars. Probably
something I could make but that would have taken a fair amount of effort
but maybe not as much as I ended up with.  I don't know.

There are kits that have these slotted disk things that fit over the

Ultimately it worked out ok even with the effort so I can’t complain (much)

The cable was my thought on why it was so difficult as well.
Happy that it ultimately worked for you.
If you had to do these often, you would no doubt find a better way.

On LF the the end on the diff is a male spline so I can get at it with a metal
brush on the drill. That’s the one that was really hard. I’ll grease it up and
the new axle *should* slide right on.

The RF has a female spline fitting at the diff and the axle has the male
spline. I’ll have to see how best to get that one cleaned up.

I have to replace the R LCA too, the air strut hooks to that and the buddy
won’t come off and the torx hole on the strut tapered bolt has stripped so
that’s going to be the next challenge.

Re: [MBZ] SUCCESS!!! $400 04E500

2023-03-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Actually I was thinking about it and yeah having the DAS really helps
with these issues, but there is also learning from failure, which was
discouraging me yesterday.  I was thinking about what a PITA it was
going to be to try to move and load this thing with it slammed and that
was getting me all agitated. So getting it fixed today really felt good
in that respect. It is great to stand there and see a zero-cost fix
actually work and the car start to rise from the dead.  Hallelujah it is
risen!

The engine had been running a bit rough the last coupla times I started
it and exhaust was smelling a bit funky although there were no faults
for misfires or whatever.  I let it run a fair amount today while I had
the computer on it and it started running a bit better after it warmed
up.  Probably the gas is not great after sitting for a few months or
however long it has been there.  It did start spewing coolant out of a
heater hose below the cabin air filter so I'm sure a lot of that stuff
is going to have to be changed after the rodents and whatever else has
been in there.

The fuel sender is not working.  I think there is some kind of recall on
the fuel system I will have to check into, my daughter had the pump and
some other stuff replaced on her 211 wagon under an extended warranty so
maybe this car is covered too.

I think you’re right. I seem to recall that being the case - you peen a dimple

Not like it’s something you do very often…

Just snug it up to where it was and declare victory. Avoid impact
wrenching it at all costs.

All it has to do is not let the flange loosen up; the splines take all the
torque.

Re: [MBZ] Success

2020-03-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The only long term car I did this on was my 1982 300SD. I think I replace the
pinion seal around 220k and it was still dry at 280k or thereabouts when I sold
it. No observed issues with the diff during that time.

On the finnie I stopped what was a pretty significant leak, easily a tablespoon
every two or three days. No noise or any other indicators that anything was
amiss after I did it.

I’ve done some other W126 cars I’ve had and a W123. I can’t recall how long I
had any of them after I did the repair, but I’ve never had to mess with a
differential on any of my cars over the years other than dealing with pinion
seals.

I would do it again on any of my cars if necessary. I think it just comes down
to being careful and putting everything back exactly as it was when you took it
apart.

I tried to find my W110 service manuals to look at the procedure for the
finnie, but they seem to have escaped me.

Re: [MBZ] Success

2020-03-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Depends on the diff, but the ones I’ve done I just mark everything and put it
back where it was if there is a crush washer.

The finnie was a good example of that. The diffs in those use a crush washer
that sets the clearance for the ring and pinion, but if you remove the nut
holding the pinion and replace everything where it was originally you should be
good. There’s a torque value that’s used to set the clearance, if I recall
correctly, but it’s more important to just get everything back where it was.

thought that the FSM called for a special bench jig and all kinds of

Yeah you can pull the flange easily enough. Just go easy with the impact
putting it back together or you will crush the crush sleeve more and have
to have the pinion reset.

It’s the DAS Xentry HHTWIN latestgreatest MB software combo on a laptop.
Ordered it from a Chinese vendor off AliExpress. Was like $600 which is a lot
but I guess buying a cheap nice car and getting it running sorta justifies it
now. Finally got it to work right, I must have been doing something wrong with
it before. I’ll get the link.

Now I need to check out the SL600 and the ML320 and see what’s up with them.
The ML has a similar problem with the tranny apparently but I was not

Way to go!!  BTW, what kind of code reader did you use to read the
tranny codes?  recall how much it was?  Know if any decent code readers
are for rent?

Your ego gets a great lift to the stratosphere - it's it such a mess
dealing with all the electronics/computers and such!

Ain't it great when a plan comes together?   ;-)

codes and faults and such (there were A LOT!).  Cleared them, there
were still some that seem to be hard faults with some components or
something so will deal with those, but the transmission codes cleared
so that was encouraging.  Took it out for a quick spin and IT
WORKS  Trans shifts smoothly and properly, all seems well.  Car
runs well though it seems to have some howling and rumbling coming
from the back end, might be tires or something, I'll have to check.
It was sitting for awhile so maybe the tires have some flats spots or
something.  Everything underneath looked good and clean though, but I
will check again.

So $200 for conductor plate, new connector, and filter and fluid and
various bits and the car is now ready to roll!  Will hit the DMV
tomorrow or Friday and get plates then do some shakedown.  But it
seems like a really nice car, clean and looks good.  I need a right
driving light, for some reason it looks like it broke off and is
missing.  Nothing else it seems.

And I got the fancy computer working!  Turns out it had the 38 pin
connector up under the fuse panel cover, so maybe using that instead
of the OBD port was the key.  I'll have to look on the ML and see and
then get it hooked to that if it has one, maybe I can get it sorted
easily without having to mess with it much.

So a good Benz day  YAY ME

I positioned the car so I could see the headlight beams on the storage
container on our driveway, opened the hood all the way, and began
troubleshooting with my Fluke 77 DMM.

I found that the source terminals for the fuses are the bottom terminals
which are covered by the installed fuses. Good German engineering! If you
have the fusebox open and short one of the exposed upper terminals to
ground somehow, you will blow the fuse and not the wiring!

At any rate, the fuses tested good. With the selector set to high beams
and the fuses out, I measured 12.24 VDC on the bottom terminals of #15
and #16. Putting the fuses in, I found that the voltage had dropped to
zero. Conclusion: good headlights, high source impedance. I therefore
surmized the combination (multi-function, whatever is the proper name)
switch was indeed dirty.

I got a small, flat-bladed screwdriver, pried the cover off the steering
wheel column through which the combination switch stalk goes, turned on
the headlights, and squirted my Radio Shack contact cleaner into the upper
part of the hole, as shown on the photographs Max sent. One toggle of the
stalk between low and high beams and the high beams started working. I
toggled it several more times for good measure and now have working
highbeams.

Thanks, guys, for the help!

I think you need to be careful with the ratchet design to ensure it is engaged
properly but I have used a couple of
sets for years under pickup trucks, suburbans etc and nothing has ever gone
wrong with them. It a tooth did break,
it should just jamb in the hole in any event. I don't think you will see
anything drop unless you fail to set them
properly to start with. Some do seem a bit tighter and thus easier to
mis-adjust.

Nothing wrong with my Chinese ratchets, although they aren't as
good as my Blackhawk ratchets. Mine are all over 20 years old,
