Re: [MBZ] Success!!!
No not really. I had thought of that, using some sort of small hydraulic bottle jack but the issue is that the cup ends that fit on the intermediate shaft (both sides) sit up inside the frame rail on both sides. You can sorta reach in there from the bottom, there is a bit of opening but not a lot, and maybe with more clearance (car up higher than I have it) and a mallet and rod of some sort it might be possible, but then that might damage the bearings on the intermediate shaft. Plus getting some tension on the cable would be kinda hard given how the whole thing is set up. The main issue seems to be that there are retaining rings in a slot on both the intermediate shaft and the axles both sides, and these have to be compressed or something as the axle is being pulled out. This will probably be some sort of issue putting it back together, the WIS shows a compression tool like those things for getting fuel line fittings off, I have a set of those. This one they show is $150!!! --FT On 6/19/24 11:46 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: Was there any way to use the cable to put static tension on the dingus, and then whack the dingus with a hammer? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archiveshttp://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Success!!!
Yes. $400. It's basically two bars that fit either end of the inside part of the axle with threaded rods that connect the ends of each bar and the slide hammer shaft screws into one of the bars. Probably something I could make but that would have taken a fair amount of effort but maybe not as much as I ended up with. I don't know. --FT On 6/19/24 11:16 AM, Allan Streib wrote: I assume there's an expensive Mercedes tool meant for this job? And would it have been worth it? Re: [MBZ] Success!!!
On LF the the end on the diff is a male spline so I can get at it with a metal brush on the drill. That’s the one that was really hard. I’ll grease it up and the new axle *should* slide right on. The RF has a female spline fitting at the diff and the axle has the male spline. I’ll have to see how best to get that one cleaned up. I have to replace the R LCA too, the air strut hooks to that and the buddy won’t come off and the torx hole on the strut tapered bolt has stripped so that’s going to be the next challenge. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Jun 18, 2024, at 10:16 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > I would be wondering what it’s going to take to get the replacement in there… > > -D > >> On Jun 18, 2024, at 6:54 PM, Kevin Kraly via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> Strong work, literally!! >> Sent from my iPhone >> On Jun 18, 2024, at 9:49 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes wrote: >>> >>> After banging on the LF axle for days, soaking it with Kroil, banging >>> more, soaking etc. I still couldn’t get it loose. Re: [MBZ] SUCCESS!!! $400 04E500
Actually I was thinking about it and yeah having the DAS really helps with these issues, but there is also learning from failure, which was discouraging me yesterday. I was thinking about what a PITA it was going to be to try to move and load this thing with it slammed and that was getting me all agitated. So getting it fixed today really felt good in that respect. It is great to stand there and see a zero-cost fix actually work and the car start to rise from the dead. Hallelujah it is risen! The engine had been running a bit rough the last coupla times I started it and exhaust was smelling a bit funky although there were no faults for misfires or whatever. I let it run a fair amount today while I had the computer on it and it started running a bit better after it warmed up. Probably the gas is not great after sitting for a few months or however long it has been there. It did start spewing coolant out of a heater hose below the cabin air filter so I'm sure a lot of that stuff is going to have to be changed after the rodents and whatever else has been in there. The fuel sender is not working. I think there is some kind of recall on the fuel system I will have to check into, my daughter had the pump and some other stuff replaced on her 211 wagon under an extended warranty so maybe this car is covered too. --FT On 3/29/23 2:04 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: Congrats! IIRC, which is questionable at this point, there outer end of the nut is like a sleeve. You dent it into a groove in the shaft. Re: [MBZ] Success
The only long term car I did this on was my 1982 300SD. I think I replace the pinion seal around 220k and it was still dry at 280k or thereabouts when I sold it. No observed issues with the diff during that time. On the finnie I stopped what was a pretty significant leak, easily a tablespoon every two or three days. No noise or any other indicators that anything was amiss after I did it. I’ve done some other W126 cars I’ve had and a W123. I can’t recall how long I had any of them after I did the repair, but I’ve never had to mess with a differential on any of my cars over the years other than dealing with pinion seals. I would do it again on any of my cars if necessary. I think it just comes down to being careful and putting everything back exactly as it was when you took it apart. I tried to find my W110 service manuals to look at the procedure for the finnie, but they seem to have escaped me. -D > On Mar 29, 2020, at 8:53 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: > > Interesting! Depends on the diff, but the ones I’ve done I just mark everything and put it back where it was if there is a crush washer. The finnie was a good example of that. The diffs in those use a crush washer that sets the clearance for the ring and pinion, but if you remove the nut holding the pinion and replace everything where it was originally you should be good. There’s a torque value that’s used to set the clearance, if I recall correctly, but it’s more important to just get everything back where it was. -D > On Mar 29, 2020, at 8:40 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: > > So how do you get the torque right and not mess up the differential? It’s the DAS Xentry HHTWIN latestgreatest MB software combo on a laptop. Ordered it from a Chinese vendor off AliExpress. Was like $600 which is a lot but I guess buying a cheap nice car and getting it running sorta justifies it now. Finally got it to work right, I must have been doing something wrong with it before. I’ll get the link. Now I need to check out the SL600 and the ML320 and see what’s up with them. And I got the fancy computer working! Turns out it had the 38 pin connector up under the fuse panel cover, so maybe using that instead of the OBD port was the key. I'll have to look on the ML and see and then get it hooked to that if it has one, maybe I can get it sorted easily without having to mess with it much. Just looked at LKQ online inventory for Rivers Ave, they've got about 7 of your 210 cars and a wagon there, so lots of potential parts if you need them. I think you need to be careful with the ratchet design to ensure it is engaged properly but I have used a couple of sets for years under pickup trucks, suburbans etc and nothing has ever gone wrong with them. It a tooth did break, it should just jamb in the hole in any event. I don't think you will see anything drop unless you fail to set them properly to start with. Some do seem a bit tighter and thus easier to mis-adjust. I asked the manager, whom I've known from other stores for years, why he got rid of the Chinese rachet stands. He just smiled and walked away. I suspect a tooth either broke or someone didn't make sure the rachet was completely engaged, and one went down. I now have four of the heavy duty pin type. Isn't it amazing how "little things" can be so rewarding? I think that I what I like most about my 240D -- I will (eventually) "fix" stuff that I let the mechanic do on Debbie's Buick.
