I’m trying to recall if these are like the W123, where you have to get a bunch
of extensions to reach back along the side of the transmission case just to get
leverage on them?

Don’t think I’ve ever done a W126 starter.

Have to be underneath to change the starter. Two bolts, long extension.

They tend to lock up when bad, I’ve had two do that.

that it will never run right unless you change the IP.

The pump on my 400k SDL is great.   You could use it.

[MBZ] 87 SDL IP issue

2019-02-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I decided to fart around with this SDL I picked up a while back that runs
like crap, seems like it’s only running on about 4 cylinders. In looking at the
IP somebody at some point tried to do delivery valve seals except they did not
have he socket. The things were chewed up and I had a hard time getting the
socket on them. The #1 delivery valve did not appear to have the copper washer
and the spring was broken. The rest of them appeared to be OK as far as no
missing parts but all of them were tightened down so much it was difficult to
remove them. I did the job using holders from a spare parts IP. When I fired
the car up, it’s still running like crap. I loosened each line and determined
it seems the issue with with #2. There is no fuel at all coming out of that
port out of the IP. I took that valve back apart and everything seemed fine but
I went ahead and swapped out the upper barrel with another one and still no
fuel coming out of that port. What could be the issue? Maybe they somehow
pulled the lower part which has to be oriented a specific way. On several of
the holes I did notice little metal flakes probably from slight damage to the
threads from over tightening. All the valve holders when back in just fine. I
fear I may end up just having to swap the IP.

My brother is wanting to sell ihis 86 300SDL. He's replaced it with a newer
car.

275k I think, engine rebuild (after a fractured oil pan incident), rebuilt
tranny a few years back, probably 60k miles ago. Interior is a bit rough, will
need seat covers eventually, fronts are cracked and torn.

Radiator is a custom rebuild for the top tank, aluminum (since they are NLA).

Minor body damage at the rear edge of the right rear door, parking lot scrape I
think.

Runs well., but the AC needs work (won't hold a charge, may just be o-rings).

Will have pictures tomorrow if anyone is interested.

[MBZ] More SDL glow plug issues

2017-07-09 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I cleaned up the fuse holder contacts and they were not really bad. I did
find where the connector on one of the plugs was lightly rubbing the metal hold
down for the harness holder. Problem solved or so I thought. Turn on key and no
glow plug light. Damn. I turned on the key and went around to the relay and
heard it click, but then clicked again a few seconds later, like maybe it's not
really kicking in or something. I also tested all the plugs and they were all
1.2 ohms. It was too hot and I just got done replacing oil cooler lines on a
6.5 diesel suburban so I was too tired to mess with it anymore. I guess I will
swap the relay next.

[MBZ] The SDL

2017-01-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I got a new set of gears for the odo to get it working on the SDL and took
it for a drive yesterday. First drive of any distance since I have had it.
Probably about 8 miles. Odo only registered about 4 miles during that time. I
then remembered when I put it back together I forgot to put the clear plastic
cover back on that goes over the gears and holds them in. I took it back apart
today and put it back together correctly and it now works great.

So over the 40 miles it was at 70 most of the wag and I gave it several hard
run ups to speed. I can't really tell if it's getting any better or not but it
seems like it misses when coming down from speed to idle at about 1-1.2k rpm
and smooths out at idle. Did still get a miss a couple of times even after all
those miles and fully warm. I drove it again today and it still runs like crap
till you get it fully warm. Maybe it will start clearing up with some more
miles. We shall see what kind of mileage and how much oil it's using.

2016-12-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The extent to which I have driven the SDL since the Bosio nozzles has been to
town and back a couple of times picking up the kid from school, about 8 miles
round trip. I have laid on the pedal and drove it hard during those 2 trips and
it runs like a striped assed ape when you get on it. Probably the fastest SDL I
have driven. The Bosio nozzles make a noticeable difference. I did not use the
stock ones I used the higher output nozzles that are considered high output for
the 603 and older and is he standard 606 nozzles. I believe they flow a little
more fuel.

So the thing runs great and has plenty of power on the road but even after
driving it had it still has the miss at idle which starts out very bad cold but
is less pronounced after warmed up. It's got to me the delivery valves.

Re: [MBZ] 300 SDL wheel lug nuts

2016-11-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The car had Bundt wheels and lugs I picked up the 15 slot, 126 wheels
and trial fitted them... the Bundt wheel lugs were short, only engaged 2
threads, did the research and found the later style wheels require longer
lug bolts..

So, definitely, there is a "long and a short"...

Also, Mercedes uses a rather unique "ball" seating / centering design which
really imparts a lot of energy into the grip action.. I would strongly
suggest that factory torque values be used, only.

The rest of the automotive world uses taper forcing cone design, which in
my humble opinion is much less than the superior Mercedes design.

2016-11-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
On a 201 too short means they won't install. My '84 came with 14" wheels that
used short bolts, the 15" wheels I already had used long bolts. The short bolts
wouldn't even start to catch the threads on the newer wheels.

Check on Ebay, I bought a full set for the coupe I'm restoring there..
solid steel, chrome, so no caps to deal with, for not to bad price. MUCH
cheaper than dealer. They are available there in two lengths.. I'm
going to

use a set of 126, 15 slot wheels [I know you purist,, not period correct,
but I like the look and 15 inch tire selections]. The 126 wheels require
the longer thread / bolt length.

Ebay motors.. search "Mercedes lug bolts" .. should find a listing there..

I got a set of the cheap Chinee wheel centers for the 1994 S420. They lasted
about 6 months before the paint started fading.

Snagged a set of the real thing (cast aluminum, enameled paint, etc.) from a
guy on Benzworld a few months ago for $25. They’re black rather than the dark
blue, and they look really sharp on the S420. The difference in quality is
light years better.

Nice accent - I wouldn’t mind having a set for all my cars.

I’ll check eBay first once I get a length for mine and see if I can find some
there. I would rather go aftermarket with the solid ends than the plastic

The end on the new one is similar to the ones with the cap. (finished)
According to Tom, about 10 months ago, the available ones don't have the
caps, but have the end forged like a 123 bolt, but it has the profile of
the old ones with the cap. I ordered one, but it is at #1 Daughter's
house, so I can't get the PN from it right now.

If you want ones with the cap, you might try tri-star or another
knackers in the no-precipitation belt.

Are the new ones just flat on the ends, or are they missing the caps?
I just looked at the EPC and the caps were a separate part - I din’t
think they were, but that might be due to them being NLA when I looked
a while back.

I’ve got a couple on the 350SDL that are missing the caps I’ve been
thinking about replacing. Haven’t looked into it recently so I wasn’t
sure what the options were…

Ralph,

You have two choices:

Buy replacements from the dealer. These will have the plastic caps on the tops
of the bolts that yours are missing - these are not service parts.

Contact https://www.otisincla.com and give them
the dimensions. These guys are the Gods of Lug bolts and can pretty well
source anything you could ever want. They won’t be cheap, but they’ll be very
high quality and won’t have the plastic caps, but solid ends.

I have a set of table rails. the sort that allows you to stretch a table.
Maybe those will be useful. Then Jim could have a short as well as LONG wheel

Re: [MBZ] The SDL

2016-09-07 Thread clay via Mercedes
I accept

Gump was a rolling disaster that Kaleb taunted me into bidding on. I think it
was revenge for his purchase of the POS SDL. She restored quite well then gave
up the ghost after 8 years

Froggy has been on the road to recovery for four years. Not much rust, much
less than Gump. There are still a bunch of work to get her really sweet.

Polei will be another labor of love. I am getting better at finding more
functional examples that require a little less hassle to make pretty.

No, not too happy with the X5 lately. It's running badly, recently needed
a new cat, etc.
Yes, have lost most interest in the 'heap, but haven't decided whether to
resurrect it
or not for this year.

However, if Clay should choose to relinquish his title to Jim, then Jim
> would get the rusted through, slowly collapsing Grand Champion Bottomfeeder

I think the 'heap is much rustier now than Gump was. Can't open a door
because of body sag is a major negative point, as is the passenger seat
falling through the floor. And, the microwave metal I welded on is now all
rusting through again. Headlights are starting to come off the body, etc.

Yes, but Dimitri COULD restore the unrestoreable if he wanted to. Since no one
will challenge him, he is the Grand Champion Sheet Metal Bottomfeeder by
default, while Jim is the Grand Champion Shoe Goo Bottomfeeder; an
ultra-special category that is extremely difficult, has few practitioners, and
requires profound artistic as well as mechanical ability.
(ISAB* groupies flock around Shoe Goo Grand Champions at international
meetings.)

However, if Clay should choose to relinquish his title to Jim, then Jim would
get the rusted through, slowly collapsing Grand Champion Bottomfeeder Loving
Cup instead of Clay.

I dunno.  My Chicken Wagon and especially the $100 Frankenheap might give
him a run!
The FH is running a net _profit_ of around $1000 right now.

Plus, both you and clay are in WA. Maybe it's the weather? Except
you are in the dry part of the state.

Clay is a world class bottom feeder. No one on the list has even come close to
his bottomfeedingness. He definitely deserves some sort of recognition in this
legendary low price group.

An award in the form of a loving cup or faux sheepskin should be created and
presented to him at the upcoming international event in New England; in
absentia if he can't be there; or at a future event if there isn't time for
this one.

In the spirit of true conservatism, the set of principles which give rise to
bottomfeedingness, I for one will be searching Goodwill and similar stores for
an appropriate cup that can be erased and inscribed with a eulogy to Clay. In
view of the bald tires, borderline brakes, and other risks associated with very
low priced old Mercedes, a eulogy would be most appropriate; just in case.

[MBZ] The SDL

2016-09-03 Thread clay via Mercedes

The new to me SDL. It has 314k on the clock. Tires are balder than a baby’s
backside, some rust through in places, paint is toast, front seat covers are
toast but seats move, fan and heat are good, did not check AC, sunroof works,
engine runs, brakes work-ish, it was wet and bald tires do not grip. Engine
bay had thick residue, battery pan is rusty, under the pan, mice had a home and
that made rust through. Window do not lower… might be wire issue or ??? Will
attach 12v to test it all. PO did a bunch of work to keep it running, so not
all bad. I have yet to go through the two cases of parts and bits that were in
the back seat.

I will pressure wash Sunday to really get the crud off then whip out the sander
to get a surface for the filler/primer to adhere. Major alligatoring of the
paint and rusty spots all over. I am turning it into a Polizei car, so hood,
doors and trunk lid are getting green paint. Rattle can white — of the very
cheapest will be used to coat the rest of the car. The really really cheapo
$0.99 a can stuff.

I don’t know, but I do know the KLIMA has nothing to do with it.

[MBZ] 300 SDL tach

2016-06-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
What drives the tac on these? I just hopped in the sdl to go to town real quick
to get the tag for it and the tach was not working at all. It has always worked
before but now it is not all the sudden. I tried pulling the Klima and
reinserting and it made no difference.

Re: [MBZ] PA sdl update

2016-05-06 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
It's got right at 200k. What I find strange is the coolant tank is
literally filled to the very top of the fill hole.

I will have to look at the pump, did not notice if it was old style
or new style.

That is enough I'd be measuring stretch and maybe getting a little
nervous. normally that would not be enough to wear out the chain to
breaking.

Re: [MBZ] PA sdl update

2016-05-06 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

You will of course want to find all the missing bits of the broken chain,
which may have found their way to do damage to other internal engine
parts.. right?

Seems it would be a prudent time to pull the front timing cover and inspect
all chain guides and drive gears. If the chain wore enough to break, seems
likely the gear teeth it runs against also have excessive wear, and
certainly the chain guides...

Just a thought..

What does the front of the vacuum pump look like? Old style? If so,
probably a ball bouncing around that broke the chain. In that case,
the break will be pretty clean. the balls will be in the bottom of
the pan, and won't go anywhere unless you can get them out.

The only things that normally break the chain are balls form the vac
pump or hydro-lock from a head gasket fail. How many miles on the
thing? I think not enough to break the chain from mileage.
