Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
From what I can tell those DIY units have special quick connect fittings and are ready to go. They are also more expensive. The others that have regular flair fittings require a vacuum to be pulled (no big deal) but are quite a bit cheaper. Research also seems to indicate all the brands are made by about 2 different companies in China. Gree might be one of the companies that make many of them sold under different brands. Been thinking about doing a multiple zone setup out in the shop. My insulation guys, who put two different mini-splits in for me use a brand called “Gree.” They have been using them for some time, according to the owner, and have been very pleased with them. That said, when I was researching a mini-split for the FL garage I was going to DIY and pretty much settled on the “MR. COOL” brand, which you can find all over the place. They seem to have a really good setup with getting the right line set, mounts, etc., etc., and are geared towards DIY’ers. -D > On May 9, 2024, at 7:06 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Anyone got any recommendations on mini splits? I have been thinking about it too. Would be nice to have AC in the garage in the summer. Though this July has been unseasonably mild here. Haven't run the house AC in weeks. Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
I installed a 12,000 unit in my "barn" about 4 years ago. It was not hjard. My main problem was finding a mounting lication where the 2.25 inch hole (for wires and pipes) would not hit a stud. I mounted the outside unit on a wall bracket to avoid mowing debris and leaf piles. My building is uninsulated and leaky but the unit still does OK. Insulation (heat leaks) and air leaks are more important than square feet, IMO, but SF are easier to compute. IMO, these units run at part "power" as needed so there is no big problem with going bigger (more BTU) than necessary. My line-set was not precharged and needed to be evacuated but I was able to keep them short that way. A good flare tool is important if you need to shorten the line-set. You need access to power (probably 240v), which can be easy or hard depending on your situation. Overall, performance has been good. -Original Message- From: Mercedes On Behalf Of Larry Turner via Mercedes Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2021 3:30 PM To: Curt Raymond via Mercedes Cc: Larry Turner Subject: Re: [MBZ] Mini splits Hi All - I have a question about installing a minisplit. I have put in 3 systems with 8 head units. The install is easy. Just make sure the connections on your lines are all seated and tight and be careful about bending the lines. I hired my local AC guy to do the refrigerant (the units are all pre-charged) - doing nitrogen pressure test, then pumping it down to vacuum and releasing the gas. This is required for the warranty on my LG units. It’s all pretty easy. -FT Sent from my iPad > On Jul 22, 2021, at 12:30 PM, Larry Turner via Mercedes > wrote: > > Hi All - > I have a question about installing a minisplit. Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
I installed a central air conditioning system in my home by myself years ago. It came with precharged lines and precharged A coil and compressor unit. When I tightened the fittings on the lines onto the fittings at the A coil in the furnace plenum and at the compressor unit it broke a seal in the fittings and permitted the freon to flow. I did not have to use a vacuum pump to evacuate air from the system. It worked fine for about 4 years. Then we added on to the house and had to move the compressor unit so it required longer lines and had to be recharged after the lines were cut and extended by 10 to 15 feet. I know nothing about installation, but we had an 18000BTU Daikin minisplit installed in our upstairs bonus room. It is nearly the same dimensions as your shop, and the unit cools the space with ease. The big commercial Mitsubishi is clever enough to use the heat from cooling one room to warm another. Can't do that with separate systems - but maybe the residential won't do that anyway. And I'll admit there may be less need. A theater building with a room full of light dimmers and amps gets warm enough to need cooling even when other rooms might want heat. Less likely to happen in a house, I would think. Although, the south rooms with lots of sun could be "cooled" to warm other rooms... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Ours is wall mounted so we don't have to take it out and put it back but I do put a quilted cover on it over the winter.I'd also like to have the minisplit for heat during the shoulder seasons when I don't really want to turn the furnace on but we'd like to warm up the house. -Curt On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, 9:15:52 PM EDT, Dwight Giles wrote: Yes,when life returns to normal would be good investment. Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
I put in a 4-head unit with 2-12k and 2-9k heads, this was a few years ago, was less than $3k for all the stuff. Not hard to install, I’ve done 3 systems now with 8 head units. I kinda like these things and installing them. Don’t forget running 30A power to the condenser units. You’ll need circuits and cutoffs at the condensers. --FT Sent from iPhone > On Jun 3, 2020, at 9:44 PM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes > wrote: > > I'm considering mini-splits (probably a big not so mini four way one) as I > have hot water baseboard heat and window AC. > > The windowsills are getting trashed from the window units, the house isn't > sealed well, and I have absolutely no intentions of ever giving up my > baseboard hot water heat, so my options are a central unit in the attic with > holes in the ceiling and heat loss through the ducting or mini-splits. > > I'm thinking for 7 grand I can put a four split in, large unit in the living > room which will do the kitchen and my bedroom (converted porch with a brick > internal wall) and one each in the three bedrooms at the back of the house. > That would locate the exterior part near the electric service and no more > than 15 ft from any of the interior units. > > Cheaper than the metal shingles I put on a few years back. > > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Thanks for the input. Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
I've only done 3/4 ton singles. You have more outdoor units, but they're small and quiet. No problems with minimum BTUs being too high when you only need to run one indoor unit at low speed. If there's a failure, all the other units still work. And I don't recall a three ton with four cassettes being any cheaper than four 3/4 tons. Biggest advantage to a multi split that I can think of offhand is you only need one circuit breaker to power it. Mitch. Sounds, like a,good plan Peter. Re: [MBZ] Mini splits
I'm considering mini-splits (probably a big not so mini four way one) as I have hot water baseboard heat and window AC. The windowsills are getting trashed from the window units, the house isn't sealed well, and I have absolutely no intentions of ever giving up my baseboard hot water heat, so my options are a central unit in the attic with holes in the ceiling and heat loss through the ducting or mini-splits. I'm thinking for 7 grand I can put a four split in, large unit in the living room which will do the kitchen and my bedroom (converted porch with a brick internal wall) and one each in the three bedrooms at the back of the house. That would locate the exterior part near the electric service and no more than 15 ft from any of the interior units. Cheaper than the metal shingles I put on a few years back. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I see these off brand mini-splits advertised on my local FB marketplace all of the time.
