However, consider the faq ( http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq4.html#MkInsMedia ): 4.3.1 - Making a CD-ROM You can create a CD-ROM using the cd50.iso or install50.iso files. The exact details here are left to the reader to determine with the tools they have at their disposal. In OpenBSD, you can create a CD from an ISO image using cdio(1): # cdio tao cd50.iso Most CD recorders sold for Windows and Macintosh systems come with software that can burn ISO images to blank media. If yours does not, there are various no-cost applications that can do this for you. -Neal

I have a T400 and followed your suggestion. My machine suspends and resumes most of the time with X and the network up and running. However, once resumed, one of the processors is in ~100% interupt state and reboot doesn't work properly. It will sync disks and look as though it powers down (black screen) but the system's power light is still on and the machine does not resond to anything but a hard shutdown. Also, after one suspend/resume, it won't suspend again. Note, I say that it suspends/resumes most of the time because it panicked once. However, I haven't been able to get to panic again. dmesg after suspend/resume: OpenBSD 4.7-current (GENERIC.MP) #186: Thu Apr 15 12:02:55 MDT 2010 dera...@amd64.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP real mem = 2070614016 (1974MB) avail mem = 2001784832 (1909MB) mainbus0 at root bios0 at mainbus0: SMBIOS rev. 2.4 @ 0xe0010 (74 entries) bios0: vendor LENOVO version "7UET43WW (1.13 )" date 08/19/2008 bios0: LENOVO 7417CTO acpi0 at bios0: rev 2 acpi0: tables DSDT FACP SSDT ECDT APIC MCFG HPET SLIC BOOT ASF! You are offering plenty of space for the required OpenBSD mirror stuff (see the ftp page for details). Given that you'v got plenty of space and you want to "focus on data that is useful," I suggest mirroring snapshots as well. I host a third tier mirror and much of my traffic is dovoted to folks updating snaps. As others have said, third tier mirrors sync to second tier mirrors and, given that you're in Europe, the following are the second tier mirrors there. 4.7 identifies HDDs differently than 4.6 (during upgrade)
Hello, I just tried to upgrade my machine to 4.7 (release) and it IDs my hard drives differently than 4.6 did. That is, when asked (during upgrade) which disk the root partition is on it offers: sd0 wd0 wd1 wd2. However, what I'm expecting is: wd0 wd1 wd2 wd3 Thus, fsck fails and therefore the upgrade does too. Will upgrading via source work? Fresh install? It's just that such a defense is not needed. "HE" is "perfect" and can do no "wrong" (given that this is an open source project that nobody has to particpate in it). Nobody will dispute your position, as an opinion maker . . . but, as you may have noticed, through the years, that making such opinions open to this list only adds to the sarcasm/hatred. I've defenitely made myself vulnerable to such abuse (this is probably a case in point). In the end, the use of "dude" does not make the comment less sophistocated, but disapproval of such a comment only admits the lack of sophistocation on the part of s/he who took offense. route flush and sh /etc/netstart not enough?
Hello misc@, I'm having an issue with my wifi AP after I reconnect to my ISP. That is, when my internet connection is broken, for whatever reason, and then reconnected, my wireless machines see that the AP is available, but fail to connect to it. My hard connection works just fine. I flush all the routes (ie., # route flush) and then sh /etc/netstart, but that does not work. At this point, rebooting the AP machine is the only thing that I've been able to do to rectify the situation. From the research that I've done, it doesn't look as though I should have to reboot. Any suggestions? Thanks! -Neal P.S. -- I'm not sure what would be appropriate for you to look at, if anything. So, I offer a few things below. Let me know if something else would help. lambdahogan cat /etc/hostname.ral0 inet 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0 NONE media autoselect \ mediaopt hostap nwid lambdaserver nwkey xx lambdahogan cat /etc/dhcpd.conf # $OpenBSD: dhcpd.conf,v 1.1 1998/08/19 04:25:45 form Exp $ # # DHCP server options. # See dhcpd.conf(5) and dhcpd(8) for more information. # # Network: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 # Domain name: my.domain # Name servers: 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.5 # Default router: 192.168.1.1 # Addresses:192.168.1.32 - 192.168.1.127 # shared-network ETHERNET { option domain-name "lambdaserver"; option domain-name-servers 64.233.207.8, 64.233.207.9; #internal ethernet subnet 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.2.1; range 192.168.2.32 192.168.2.127; } } shared-network WIRELESS { option domain-name "lambdaserver"; option domain-name-servers 64.233.207.8, 64.233.207.9; #internal wireless subnet 192.168.3.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.3.1; range 192.168.3.32 192.168.3.127; } }

I ask because you've said so elsewhere. > ath0: unable to reset hardware; hal status 200 > ath0: unable to reset hardware; hal status 3692322188 Second, I wonder if you have that card marked as 'up after the recompile. I have the same card and when I have it marked as 'down' there is no problem. In fact, I wonder if compiling the kernal has anything to do with it, because I've done that too with no "unable to reset hardware" mesage. that message only occurs when I mark the card 'up' and try to use it. So, to "fix" the issue (if it is what I think it is), mark your card as 'down' (i.e., ifconfig ath0 down). It's not supported (yet), anyway. -Neal

I'm suggesting that, after you did something (not necessarily the kernel compile), "the difference" is that your system is now trying to use a card that is unsupported.

Thanks. Someone already mentioned xrandr . . . Well, I just finished setting up a dual head set-up using xrandr. Below is my xorg.conf (which was a slight variation of the generic one provided by *X -configure*). I also consulted http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2and it's manpage for basic commands. I'm still practicing moving around in such an environment, but it works and, given this is my first dual head set-up/configuration, it was quite painless. I can't comment too deeply on the matter, since this is rather new to me as well. But here's what comes to mind. With my config I just typed xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS and both screens work and I can move freely back and forth. Perhaps, try shutting off the left screen xrandr --output "your-leftscreen" --off and then turn it back on using the first script above. -- www.nealhogan.net www.lambdaserver.com

The responses you're getting . . . the one's you're responding to . . . the one's you claim are from Wim defenders (BTW - mine are not. I'm on oBSD's side) are the result of this issue taking place on m...@. If your decision was to stop European orders, then that is what we have to live with. But, this issue is going way beyond the basic user . . . but if it's on misc@, then the basic user is going to talk. Your ego is in tact. The points you are making are clear and reasonable. I was not attacking you or the project . . . both of which, I have great respect. All that I and, I suspect, Floor are saying is that this has to leave the general discussion because all it seems to be doing is causing folks to post angry messages about things that they don't/can't know about (except for wim and theo). I am not telling you what you should/should not talk about. pf, scrub in "syntax error"
As of recent updates to -current, the latest of which was today (04/10/09), my pf rules are not loading due to a "syntax error" in my scrub line. I have not touched my pf.conf in a while, so the difference must be from recent source. I don't remember exactly when this started to happen, but it's been within the last week. Well, since you haven't received a public response in 19 hours (I was hoping you would), I'll through my two bits in. Unfortunately, I have nothing to say about your diff. As far as I know, it's a known issue and it was claimed to be something the devs were working on. I have an AR5424 card that I've made known as not being supported yet. Someone, a while back, mentioned (on this list) that their version of this card was working. sh /etc/netstart and other networking issues
Hello, First, *sh /etc/netstart em0* (as root) looks as though it works . . . it says that the address is renewed and *ifconfig* output says that em0 is UP, RUNNING and active. Yet, I cannot get beyond my router. That is, I can log into my router but can't browse the web or log into another machine beyond my router. Second, I've recently started to learn pf and setting up a server. As I say above, I can log into my router and have recently opened ports 22 and 80 on its firewall to allow such traffic to my oBSD box. I have another machine running XP with a wifi connection to the same router. However, sometimes the wifi connection gets messed up . . . the default gateway gets incorrectly assigned. The way to re-establish the wifi connection (i.e., get a correct default gateway) is to disconnect my oBSD box from the router and *repair* the wifi connection on the XP box. Now, when I plug the ethernet back into the oBSD box and *sh /etc/netstart em0* I have the first problem above. When I reboot the machine the connection works fine and my wifi is fine. (It seems that the wifi needs to be connected before em0 is connected. If em0 is established before the wifi we get the second problem.) Note that my IP addresses are dynamically assigned and I've recently set up and account with dyndns.com and installed/enabled ddclient. Below are my dmesg, ifconfig output, and pf.conf (it's a temporary configuration, to work things out). What do you think? Thanks in advance! Re: sh /etc/netstart and other networking issues
I was *flush*ing the tables before *netstart*ing (and having the same issue, if I recall correctly) before I read the netstart manpage. It looked to me that *sh /etc/netstart* "reset an existing if to its default state." Am I reading that wrong? Thanks for your help. Re: sh /etc/netstart and other networking issues
Yes! I was running a DHCP server on this machine. My rc.conf dhcpd_flags-line was set to NO, but, at somepoint, I set dhcpd_flags="em0" in rc.conf.local and forgot about it. I tested *sh /etc/netstart* and the default gateway didn't change (i.e., everything worked). I just rebooted the XP/wifi box and the gateway was correctly assigned and, agian, everything worked. Thanks a lot for your help. At first I had a similar situation to yours. I could "connect" to the access point, yet could not pass info to and from the web. That is, my wireless machines were getting an IP address, but the the gateway address was wrong . . . it was from the wired access point. The problem was how I set up my dhcpd.conf. I had both the wired and the wifi subnets in the same *shared network* block. To fix this I set up two shared network blocks, one for the wired and the wireless. -Neal -- www.nealhogan.net

There has been talk of Atheros opening up to the linux community and I've seen chatter on freeBSD lists (specifically about our chipset). > > Original Message > Subject: Acer Aspire One freeze with Atheros AR5424 on OpenBSD 4.5 > Date: Thu, 12 Mar 2009 14:48:59 -0600 > From: Alvaro Mantilla Gimenez > To: b...@openbsd.org > > Hello, > > 1) Steps to recreate the issue: > > /sbin/ifconfig ath0 scan > > > 2) Dmesg of the computer: > > OpenBSD 4.5 (GENERIC) #1749: Sat Feb 28 14:51:18 MST 2009 > dera...@i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC > RTC BIOS diagnostic error 80 > cpu0: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) > 1.60 GHz > cpu0: > > FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,APIC,SEP,MTRR,PGE,MCA,CMOV,PAT,CFLUSH,DS,ACPI,MMX,FXSR,SSE,SSE2,SS,HTT,TM,SBF,SSE3,MWAIT,DS-CPL,EST,TM2,xTPR > real mem = 1060163584 (1011MB) > avail mem = 1016815616 (969MB) > RTC BIOS diagnostic error 80 > mainbus0 at root > bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+ BIOS, date 10/06/08, SMBIOS rev. 2.4 @ > 0xe9180 (32 entries) > bios0: vendor Acer version "v0.3308" date 10/06/2008 > bios0: Acer AOA150 > acpi0 at bios0: rev 2 > acpi0: tables DSDT FACP SSDT HPET APIC MCFG ASF! I copied the .iso's using isorecorder2 on a machine running XP. I do have an "official" set of 4.3 disks coming soon. My Thinkpad came earlier and I couldn't wait . . . perhaps I should. 1) My ethernet is not being recognized at install and it is not noted when I "ifconfig." It does recognise that I have a wireless card (ath0), but I can't configure it. 2) my dmesg command outputs a screen full of: M^\? 3) X fails to load (the screen flickers and then outs an error message talking about enough memory for my video card, among other things). I installed all sets and answered yes to the question about planning to run X. 4) The dmesg.boot file is empty. I think that's it. What do you think? Thanks! -- www.nealhogan.net
4.3/4.4 install issues with T400 (more info)
After looking around at what I have installed, I found some more info that may help. I apologize for more than one post, but I wanted to get this info up on the list. Below is all I have at this point and expect to have, unless asked for more details. Thanks for your help! What follows is the jist of what I said in my last post. I have a new T400 Thinkpad with the following: (note that I've tried many other avenues to find an answer to my problems, including an experienced oBSD friend, who suggested I write this). 160GB HDD/7200RPM CD-RW/DVDCOM24X24X248XUSL EXPR.CARD SLOT/PCCARDSLOT THINKPAD 11B/G WLAN PCI 3 INTG.WIR.WIDENET UPGRAD. 4 CELL LI-ION BATERRY INT.CORE2DUOPROCP8600 1GBPC3-8500 1067MHZMEM 14.1"WXGA+,LEDB/L WWAN 11N LCDCOVBEZLEDB/L14.1"W/OCAM ODD SWFCD-RW/DVD/ROM,VISTA MT 7417 SYSTE. I installed all sets and answered yes to the question about planning to run X. What follows is the NEW info. The dmesg is not completely empty/full of jiberish. There are a few hundred lines of 'M^\?', I hit page-down a few times and eventually reached stuff that made a bit more sense. The machine that has oBSD on it is not connected to the web, so I can't easily send the dmesg. However, there is no indication of ethernet recognition (something like em0). Also, on the dmesg are indications that many things are not configured. Things like: -- pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 vendor "Intel", unknown product -- vga1 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 vendor "Intel", unknown product -- there are also a few "not configured" things Is there anything else that I should look for on the dmesg that may be helpful to you? Also, I've looked at the Xorg.0.log and there is an (EE) message that says that it's unable to locate/open config file and a (WW) message that says the "OS did not count PCI devices, guessing wildly." These seemed pretty important. There are a handful of other (EE) and (WW) messages as well. Thanks, again. -- www.nealhogan.net
