The bestest live show i ever did see would have to be my very first one. It was
Hammerbox at the Mercer arena in Seattle during Bumbershoot like seven years ago or
something. Back when crowd-surfing was kool, and everybody wanted to stage-dive.
Carrie Akre's voice totally blew me away.

Another great show was Jane's Addiction last year in Seattle, but i imagine every show
on the tour was the same. I was way up in nose-bleed seats and it still rawked.

And last but not least, 764-HERO and Modest Mouse at the UW HUB ballroom a few months
back. Holy shit. I've never heard MM play so well.

Any other Hammerbox fans out there?

off, if you will. Some people like to shoot up heroin, some people like to
go for a 15 mile run. Who's to say which is better? Heroin in well
controlled moderation will actually never be a problem if you never
stop...running's good for your heart if you don't do it too much. Either one
will fuck your shit up pretty hardcore (running *obviously* far less so than
black tar H) if you do too much of it.
I think everyone uses something to escape. If it's not drugs it's
television, it's video games, it's sex, it's food...everyone's addicted to
*something*.
I have henceforth decided to stay out of everyone else's private exploits.
We can all do whatever the hell we want to do to ourselves.

Yes, heroin is pretty bad, but no sympathy, i find that hard to believe.
Sure, everyone has choices, and most certainly we should be responsible for
the actions that we take, but were human, and from time to time we do really
stupid things. How much more intelligent is it to take the single most
addictive substance in the world(far more powerful than heroin) and inhale
it, along with deadly tar, directly into your lungs for no other purpose
than a mild dizzy feeling the first time you try it (if your lucky and enjoy
being dizzy..and are too lazy to spin yourself in your chair a few times).
The only reason people don't kill themselves from nicotine withdrawl is that
the ammount of nicotine in four packs of ciggarrets isn't really even
compareable to the amount of herion in one needle. So yeah, we all have
choices, and we all make stupid, uniformed ones, but that doesn't make us
any less human, if anything, it makes us all too human.

Whomever said that heroin addiction was honorable is a crackhead however.

The list of famous drug addicts is pretty immense...includes some incredible
writers, musicians, artists, etc...Alice in Wonderland would never have been
written if it weren't for opium, Freud had a coke habit, in general geniuses
are pretty fucked up...either drugs or mental problems. So yes, I do suppose
we benefit from the suffering of others if you want to look at it that way.

>If you people didn't listen to big hair rock in the late
>80's early 90's I realy do feel for you.

I was too busy listening to *music*, actually

>H, I think heroin addiction is a bit honorable, all be it you >arent
>ruining a family, but other then that, shit, if you can be >fucked up all
>the time and still maintain, Kudos to you, wish I >could do it.

Heroin addiction honorable...I would never have thought to say something
like that. I have no sympathy for drug addicts, because (for the most part)
they choose to make that first step...I mean, how fucking stupid do you have
to be to shoot one of the most addictive substances in the world straight
into your veins? I'm sorry, but we *all* have choices, *all* the time...and
people have to be responsible for those choices.

>Heres a question, DO ANY OF YOU EVEN DO DRUGS, And if not, do you >look
>down upon those that do. Im willing to bet you do. Grow up
>folks, tollerance is the key to understanding.

Like I said...people have choices to make. While I may happen to think you
have to be dumb as a post to shoot heroin, that's totally someone's
choice...just like it's your choice to jump out of an airplane with a paper
bag as a parachute or go bungee jumping without measuring the rope. Drugs
are unhealthy...everything from caffeine and nicotine to crack...and it's
the rare individual who can honestly say their life has been improved and
happier through drugs.

And yes, I do drugs. I smoke marijuana every once in a while, and a few
years back I would doubtlessly still be coming down from an LSD binge at
12:45 on a Saturday afternoon. I've tried pretty much everything that I was
willing to risk putting in my body...and having come out the other side of
that, I think I have a little bit of leeway to say that drugs are terribly
unhealthy, and that people should not do them as often as they do. If that
counts as looking down on people, so be it.

awhile ago i read an article on MM, i guess it was not too long after 'long
drive' came out, and they started getting press... i guess being that MM have
sort of a unique sound, the press was trying to peg them and compare their
sound, etc.
...anyways, isaac mentioned he really dug the talking heads, and the pixies.
and its true, in the late 70s/80s there was the talking heads, then in the
late 80s/early 90s there was the pixies. and now we've got modest mouse.
yeah, all three are completey unique bands, but the thread is there.
so basically if you like MM, youd probably like the pixies. and if you like
both MM and the pixies, chances are youll dig the talking heads, especially
their earlier stuff/especially "MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD". i dont
know, there really arent any hits on this album, ya know, all the talking
heads songs everyone knows, buts its my favorite.
but yeah, everyone should buy that album, if you can find it, get it used on
vinyl, cos it has one of the best covers ever, its a million(exaggeration)
polaroids of the band members peiced together.
well, thats my vote for "essential listening for MM fans".
