The bestest live show i ever did see would have to be my very first one. It was Hammerbox at the Mercer arena in Seattle during Bumbershoot like seven years ago or something. Back when crowd-surfing was kool, and everybody wanted to stage-dive. Carrie Akre's voice totally blew me away. Another great show was Jane's Addiction last year in Seattle, but i imagine every show on the tour was the same. I was way up in nose-bleed seats and it still rawked. And last but not least, 764-HERO and Modest Mouse at the UW HUB ballroom a few months back. Holy shit. I've never heard MM play so well. I think it all just comes down to what we choose to use to take the edge off, if you will. Some people like to shoot up heroin, some people like to go for a 15 mile run. Who's to say which is better? Heroin in well controlled moderation will actually never be a problem if you never stop...running's good for your heart if you don't do it too much. Either one will fuck your shit up pretty hardcore (running *obviously* far less so than black tar H) if you do too much of it. I think everyone uses something to escape. If it's not drugs it's television, it's video games, it's sex, it's food...everyone's addicted to *something*. I have henceforth decided to stay out of everyone else's private exploits. We can all do whatever the hell we want to do to ourselves. >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: [MMouse]: (no subject) >Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 15:06:27 EST > > society, >the partthey've played in spirtuality, and in helping us to understand >very complexabstract ideas, is also quite profound. > > >hmmm... last time i checked, i could understand complex and abstract ideas >regardless of the fact that i have never ever once smoked the wacky >tabaccy... i'm with the person who pretty much advocated the concept of >being >pure (straight edge if you will)... i have, at several points in time in my >life, put substances into my body (granted it's a total of about 3 beers >and >about a pack of cloves in 20 years... i'm so not hardcore)... but i can say >that i feel much better about myself knowing that i have no dependence on >anything. i am not a slave to wasting money on things that don't benefit >my >physical well-being (ie cigarettes, alcohol, heroin, etc). i don't need >weed >to help me do anything... anything that weed would help me accomplish, i >can >do myself and i'm just not 80's enough to try and bring back coke. i >know that i am very naive about drugs in general, just because i try and >distance them from me... i am fucked up enough already... i really don't >need >malt liquor in my system to act like a jackass... i do that shit sober... >and >somehow i've been able to conjure up the ability to comprehend highly >profound things without being high. i guess i'm a fucking marvel of the >modern age... i'm not saying that i am better than anyone because they do >put >substances like nicotine and thc into thier system, because i believe that >as >long as you are making yourself happy that the shit someone does is alright >with me (some exceptions... molesting kids is not cool, even if it makes >you >happy... nor is fucking the family pet)... i know it's all about dif'rent >strokes for dif'rent folks... it's just that some folks stroke it with an >x... > > >love and mango, > > >leigh __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

<> Yes, heroin is pretty bad, but no sympathy, i find that hard to believe. Sure, everyone has choices, and most certainly we should be responsible for the actions that we take, but were human, and from time to time we do really stupid things. How much more intelligent is it to take the single most addictive substance in the world(far more powerful than heroin) and inhale it, along with deadly tar, directly into your lungs for no other purpose than a mild dizzy feeling the first time you try it (if your lucky and enjoy being dizzy..and are too lazy to spin yourself in your chair a few times). The only reason people don't kill themselves from nicotine withdrawl is that the ammount of nicotine in four packs of ciggarrets isn't really even compareable to the amount of herion in one needle. So yeah, we all have choices, and we all make stupid, uniformed ones, but that doesn't make us any less human, if anything, it makes us all too human. Whomever said that heroin addiction was honorable is a crackhead however. I'm sorry, but we *all* have choices, *all* the time...and people have to be responsible for those choices. >Heres a question, DO ANY OF YOU EVEN DO DRUGS, And if not, do you >look >down upon those that do. Im willing to bet you do. Grow up >folks, tollerance is the key to understanding. Like I said...people have choices to make. While I may happen to think you have to be dumb as a post to shoot heroin, that's totally someone's choice...just like it's your choice to jump out of an airplane with a paper bag as a parachute or go bungee jumping without measuring the rope. Drugs are unhealthy...everything from caffeine and nicotine to crack...and it's the rare individual who can honestly say their life has been improved and happier through drugs. And yes, I do drugs. I smoke marijuana every once in a while, and a few years back I would doubtlessly still be coming down from an LSD binge at 12:45 on a Saturday afternoon. I've tried pretty much everything that I was willing to risk putting in my body...and having come out the other side of that, I think I have a little bit of leeway to say that drugs are terribly unhealthy, and that people should not do them as often as they do. If that counts as looking down on people, so be it. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

So Im willing to bet that most of the musicians we listen to do drugs, I feel almost sure that Issac does. Hmm, most of the greats did have problems, does that make them bad people? I think not. I mean, c'mon, Poison, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Ratt, the list goes on and on, the music world simply benefits from drug abuse. If you people didn't listen to big hair rock in the late 80's early 90's I realy do feel for you. H, I think heroin addiction is a bit honorable, all be it you arent ruining a family, but other then that, shit, if you can be fucked up all the time and still maintain, Kudos to you, wish I could do it. Heres a question, DO ANY OF YOU EVEN DO DRUGS, And if not, do you look down upon those that do. Im willing to bet you do. Grow up folks, tollerance is the key to understanding. Jonathan

i think they're a misunderstanding here that wasn't a universal "fucko" insult i just got really sick of everyone picking apart my list-i really dont care how much anyone dislikes it, i just thought someone might think it would be mildly interesting i dont think anyone really got what i said about sublime-i like the album, and just cause i like them, doesnt mean that i like heroin and leaving your kids and all that shit i dont buy music for the morals of the musicians, sorry
[MMouse]: (no subject)
well, DUH, of course our music choices are better then yours. I mean, come on, we're better than you remember? You need to simmer down there turbo, noone's after you. And stop calling people Fucko, thats my name for people who have diffrent opinions then me. Sublime sucks, so does letting your kid grow up without a father because you wanted to feel good for another hour. Jonathan\ you people win, you all win you got to tell me how wrong my list was i dont know, if i didnt put the right pavement on there, it was cause i like sublime you're all better music critics than i, go write your fucked up pretentious reviews and piss off

well it was my list i disagree oh well << OK..S+E is a great album and whatnot and I know "rock critics" are all ooh ahh about it but there is no way in hell that is a better album than Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. I listen to that album hundred million more than S+E It's so much better. The music is so much better. The lyrics are better. The artwork is better. Jesus it just kicks the shit out of other Pavement shit. I'm listening to this fucking album right now and I'm rocking out. So if someone wants to enlighten me or whatever go ahead but I just have to say what the fuck. Matt >>

"Nobody sees it when youre lying in your bed and I wanna crawl in with you, but I cry instead. I want you warm but it will only make me colder when it's over."- Those are the saddest lines Ive ever heard written by the beautiful and talented Fiona Apple. It rained today. It always makes me realize how much I hate life when it rains. Im pretty lonely here, I called the girl who stood me up last night at like 4 30 am, totally fucked up out of my mind. Lo and behold she called me back today, I havent called her back yet, not sure if im gonna. "They'll remember the people they loved their old friends and Ive seen through em all seen through em all seen through most of everything. All the people you knew where the actors. All the people you knew..Were the actors." Jonathan

I was also at the Chicago show, and I have to say I was slightly disappointed. I found it was often really hard to hear the vocals, and the overall sound quality was just okay. Ii was my first time seeing them, though, and I may have built up unreal expectations.

I thought the first one was called "one" and I know for sure that the new, second album is called "Two." Hope that helps. Am I missing out on something here? Everyone I know is talking about these people and I haven't heard 'em yet. Their show in Albuquerque is next week, so I might go just to see what all the fuss is about. I'm STILL trying to figure out why everyone is so in love with the Olivia Tremor Control album. What a bunch of goddamned noise! Ick. If anyone ever needs a 15 page paper on the evolution of mating strategies, let me know. Hey, I'll even trade it for a Modest Mouse Japanese Tour EP. Who else is signed to Epic? I can't think of anybody even remotely good. awhile ago i read an article on MM, i guess it was not too long after 'long drive' came out, and they started getting press... i guess being that MM have sort of a unique sound, the press was trying to peg them and compare their sound, etc. ...anyways, isaac mentioned he really dug the talking heads, and the pixies. and its true, in the late 70s/80s there was the talking heads, then in the late 80s/early 90s there was the pixies. and now we've got modest mouse. yeah, all three are completey unique bands, but the thread is there. so basically if you like MM, youd probably like the pixies. and if you like both MM and the pixies, chances are youll dig the talking heads, especially their earlier stuff/especially "MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD". i dont know, there really arent any hits on this album, ya know, all the talking heads songs everyone knows, buts its my favorite. but yeah, everyone should buy that album, if you can find it, get it used on vinyl, cos it has one of the best covers ever, its a million(exaggeration) polaroids of the band members peiced together. well, thats my vote for "essential listening for MM fans". peace bp NP: godspeed you black emperor "slow riot for new zero kanada" de la soul "buhloone mindstate"
