Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
This is so weird, I just have to ask the question: Is Ebay so desperate that it is trying to promote itself through the GOP Presidential race? No doubt everyone knows by now that former CEO Meg Whitman was previously an advisor to Mitt Romney's failed presidential campaign and is now one of John McCain's chief advisors being one of the several people he indicated he most admired and sought professional advice from. Well, Sarah Palin has mentioned several times now in her stump speech in which she lists all her accomplishments as Governor of Alaska that he successfully auctioned off on Ebay the luxury Alaskan state jet bought by the previous government for use by her office. Turns out that's not true. After going unsold for months, the jet was put in the hands of Turbo North Aviation, an Anchorage aircraft broker, which put an asking price of $2.45 million on the nearly $2.7 million jet. It was ultimately sold privately to an Alaskan business man for $2.1 million, $31,000 of which went to Turbo Aviation as a sales commission. Why is Sarah Palin lying about an Ebay connection? It doesn't diminish whatever accomplishment she achieved in selling an Alaskan state jet but it strangely propels Ebay into the headlines and promotes it as an effective selling tool in the public's eyes. Re: [MOPO] new eBay mandatory $4.00 max on shipping????
I am hoping there will be enough of an uproar over this that Ebay will have to alter their thinking. I got the same alert message for the album cover frames I ship. Ebay had instructed me a year or so ago that my album cover frames could be listed in the Music category under accessories and that is how I have been listing them. My alert message is that the maximum shipping for that category will be $5 beginning in October. There is no way I can ship a custom made album cover frame for $5. The custom box and shipping materials cost me about $3 just by themself before I even ship it, not to mention that I ship fully insured at my expense. I keep getting the shipping message on my larger frames also. I ship a full size movie poster frame to anywhere in the country for $14.95. It costs me considerably more than that, so I am already absorbing part of that shipping charge. There is no way it can go any lower on a single frame and we ship for free on multipacks. In their attempt to show buyers they are doing everything to make Ebay a satisfying purchasing venue, they are forgetting about who pays the bills. Sellers need to be taken care of also. That is evidenced by the number of sellers, many major sellers, that have left Ebay. I have spoken to several sellers who have said they will add the difference in the actual cost of shipping from the maximum amount Ebay is allowing to the price of their item. I guess that is one way to circumvent the situation. I suppose if everyone had to do that it would level the competition field. But then is that really a fair deal to the buyer, especially one that might be picking up their item in person and wouldn't be paying any shipping. That is a common occurence for me in Los Angeles for my particular product. I can't imagine what they are thinking. Also, I have another thought. Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
MessageTechnically, in her speech she said she put it on eBay, she didn't outright say she sold it on eBay, though, you're right, that's what was implied. As for eBay's connection to the campaign, Whitman of course is no longer CEO of the company but by her presence in the campaign it wouldn't surprise me if she were to get a cabinet seat or some other high profile appointment (which is I'm sure what she is angling for), should McCain win. Her efforts probably have more to do with her own personal grandiose ambitions, rather than the fortunes of eBay. Who knows? Hey, maybe he'll send her to Iraq... No. Actually she never said that she sold it on eBay at all - her line was that she put it on eBay, which of course is absolutely true. Re: [MOPO] new eBay mandatory $4.00 max on shipping????
eBay won't alter their thinking, Sue. They want sellers to roll the cost of shipping into the price of the item so they can collect the increased Final Value Fee. Then, in a few months, they'll require free shipping so that the entire cost of shipping will have to be included in the purchase price, for the same reason. The net effect will be to drive small and medium-sized sellers off the site. That is the intention. It's not a mistake, a miscalculation or a misstep, it's part of their plan to transform the company. [MOPO] Fw: Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
I don't think Ebay is trying all that hard, and let's be honest, they don't have to. Ebay, for better or worse, has worked itself in the pop culture lexicon. People don't say sell it or auction it anymore - they say ebay it. I don't believe Palin is trying to mislead anyone. She hasn't said she sold it on ebay - she has always said she put it on ebay. The press and the public I think took the next step and assumed it sold. Whether or not it sold really isn't the point. Even if you don't agree with her politics, any politician who cuts government pork like she's clipping coupons has to be admired. Besides, if she could sell the jet on MoviePosterBid, I think she would, since there are no listing fees! Re: [MOPO] new eBay mandatory $4.00 max on shipping????
Sue, I don't think that Ebay is truly attempting to show buyers that Ebay is a satisfying purchasing venue. Instead they would LOVE it if Sellers increase their item prices to cover S/H. I believe that Ebay knows and wants Sellers to be adding the difference in shipping and materials costs to the price of the item as it positively affects their bottom line. It may seem like small change, but it is a way for Ebay to gain more in listing and final value fees which they could not get as shipping costs are added separate to the money's paid for the item and thus those added S/H dollars have not been within their grasps. But if they make a 'standard' shipping cost and make it appear to be fair in a 'one size fits all' approach, the end result is Seller's add $5 or $30 to an expensive insured or overseas item and that $5-$30 added to the item instead of to S/H is adding money in Ebay's pocket as Sellers increase the costs of their items which equates to Sellers (once again) paying more in fees to Ebay for what was once S/H fee which they couldn't grab. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this certainly seems like a 'found money' situation and an end resulting profit for Ebay. imagine a state or federal law telling a department store that they?cannot charge more than $9.00 for shipping nor?more than $3.00 for gift wrapping despite actual costs exceeding these limits? similarly, paypal invents their own UNREGULATED rules and scams BY SAYING, we are not subject to banking laws. - novice sellers act in good faith by running to stores and buy insulated envelopes, tubes or other packaging materials.? how unfair is it to them to have their?shipping fees?limited?? a good tube costs 3.00 or more..? it seems to me that ebay's policies?will?encourage sellers to use cheaper USPS PARCEL Post Service rather than Priority Mail.. i guess this rule won't bother that unscrupulous pennsylvania dealer with 15,000+ who used that FREE USPS triangular tube that got crushed in transit to me 3 weeks ago.and was then rude to me afterwards.? she will see her earned feedback, shortly.? that sends a louder message. michael? Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
Franc, Methinks it's the other way around. The GOP is the brand here. Ebay is, for better or worse, still seen by the majority of the public as a highly successful business venture with no legitimate competitors as an internet auction site. The GOP, not Ebay, is thus promoting itself by associating it's brand with a successful public venture and having been endorsed by the former CEO is the tacit connection. As I see it, this is an effort by the GOP to attribute to itself success by association. Of course, if perception is reality, that's fine if you're a buyer of an item on Ebay or of rhetoric in an election. Otherwise, as we've seen on Ebay lately, and in elections throughout time, the truth is the devil in the details... If eBay continues as it does and leaves the stage completely as an online auction venue for vintage collectibles, the vacuum they leave behind could be a golden opportunity for someone out there with a bit of chutzpah and financial backers with balls of steel. All I know is if I were Rich and I had a working auction site like he does, I'd think about waylaying one those high rollers who are always jetting into Vegas and putting the arm on them for some seed money to turn MPB into a full-fledged vintage collectibles auction site. Probably could be done for a couple of million, excluding advertising costs. Pocket change to some. Over time the returns could be in the billions! So, Rich? I agree with you Patrick (Michael, I'm really getting tired of this alterego business, ha, ha !!!), The bottom line is the money they will take in the back door on final value fees, etc.. They can tell you they are lowering listing fees and all their other new found ideas for sellers, but they have their bottom line and buyers and sellers have their bottom line. Let's see how it plays out. As I said, I guess it levels the competition as other sellers will have to figure out a way to get their shipping costs in there just as I will. It only hurts me in our single frame auctions as most of our multipacks have free shipping. Since I offer frames at wholesale, it makes it alot to think about for me. I don't want to have one price for Ebay customers and another for website and local customers. The big part of this whole thing is that due to soaring gas prices, the shipping companies have raised their prices twice this year. Amazing. Yes, Sean, but that's a distinction almost without a difference. She didn't say she failed to sell it on ebay. She said she put in on ebay which amounted to a little plug. I find this very puzzling. Does anybody else? I do, too... so, if ebay no longer wants to be a catalyst for the little guy to unload his treasures from his attic, and become another Amazon.com, then I hope they a:) become that very institute and b:) someone else comes around and carry the torch... Re: [MOPO] FS: MY EBAY ITEMSME VERSUS BRUCE
Boy, I was thinking the same thing. And here's one more point to ponder. Ebay is going to take a 15% final value fee on Fixed Value listings and they already take a huge chunk out of auction listings. If you add on their listing fees and now the cost of shipping that the seller is being asked to absorb, Ebay is ultimately taking approximately 20% commision for simply allowing you to list in their market place.(I haven't crunched the numbers and percentages yet so this is approximate.) If you were to consign your items to Bruce or even an auction house, they would also take a similiar commision off your final sale but THEY'LL DO ALL THE WORK. They'll write the listing, photograph the item and do distribution and collections. Ebay doesn't even protect you against frauds or deadbeats. I'm considering a change. Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
I totally agree with your last comment about not letting political stuff edge in on MOPO. I only asked the question because I found the whole Ebay plug (or deception, as I see it) incomprehensible and since there seems to be a lot of Ebay experts on this board, I thought they'd have some interesting perceptions. And they did. Since Bruce started his website, leaving eBay all together, I was under the general assumption either he or Richard would, either seperately or by joining forces, do just that. Not really politics, but I have a question: Can anyone explain to me WHY Republican Presidential Nominee, John McCain, was making his acceptance speech...with a back drop picture of my Junior High School in North Hollywood, CA.? For much of his speech he had a picture of Walter Reed Junior High School behind him. I know he emphasized education as a policy issue, not sure if the pic was connected to that. More likely, he hired an incompetant tech geek to do the pics and videos, who was supposed to have Walter Reed Army Hospital as the backdrop. Throughout the speech I kept wondering WHY the building looked so familiar, I guess I buried those Middle school memories pretty deep in my psyche! Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
however in the short film about her yesterday it did say she sold it on ebay At 08:26 AM 9/5/2008, Dave Rosen wrote: Technically, in her speech she said she put it on eBay, she didn't outright say she sold it on eBay, though, you're right, that's what was implied. It was not my intention to do politics on MOPO. I was simply trying to draw out a discussion about the Ebay connection and branding but some folks on this board are apparently so uptight about anyone potentially speaking negatively about the GOP that I've now virtually been accused of being a member of the liberal-based media. Someone even registered a new account on yahoo so that they could send me some hate e-mail. Unbelievable. Re: [MOPO] new eBay mandatory $4.00 max on shipping????
Just curious: When using PayPal you are obligated to use confirmation/tracking, no matter what. If a buyer says I didn't receive the item, and you did not use delivery confirmation, you lose your money and the item - PayPal sides with the buyer EVERY TIME. So, how can you ensure confirmation, or in the case of international shipping, registered delivery, if you are not allowed to pass that cost onto the buyer? I cannot see absorbing a $20 shipping fee to confirm a delivery made in Europe, on a $10 poster. eBay will also no longer allow sellers to continue accepting checks or money orders for most categories. So, you will be forced to use PayPal, or similar on-line payment system, most will use PayPal - combined with the shipping price restrictions - and, lose a bunch of money. Yeah! I think I am in the process of working through my LAST auctions on eBay - many posters have no bids now, and have only 2 days left. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZoldtimecinema-com; eBay ID: oldtimecinema-com Best Regards, Gary Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.

Re: [MOPO] FS: MY EBAY ITEMSME VERSUS BRUCE
For all of this talk about how horrible eBay is, and how much better consigning is, I will remind people that I will accept a limited number of consignments for set sale and/or auction. My auctions have routinely kicked tail on lobby cards (anyone who's seen us at a show knows it's a big specialty of ours) - but our larger size paper is also (finally) setting records. In our July auction, I was worried about the Goldfinger 3-sheet, and the Invisible Man 1-sheet we had up for sale since Heritage had just sold the same items a week earlier. But my prices realized beat them by 30% and 20% respectively, plus we sold a Sabrina 1-sheet for more than 2x the best price Bruce has ever gotten. Those were all my own items as I always put my money where my mouth is, but my consignment rate is a flat 15% of the selling price which pretty much cuts in half what any other dealer/auction house will charge. I will admit I'm probably not the right choice for lots of things (I've never done very well with foreign paper except Godzilla of course), but if you have quality science fiction or horror, or many other things, it would be downright silly not to talk to me. For example I recently sold a 1947 Dracula one sheet for a customer that netted him FIVE FIGURES HIGHER than the one recently at Profiles. The sky isn't falling everywhere. Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?
MessageMaybe mentioning e*ay is like kissing babies or shaking hands with pop stars in funny sun glasses espousing causes. You don't have to like them, know anything about them, care for what they do, but that picture shows you're either nice, kindly, fatherly (female pollies never seem to kiss babies) and are hip. It's just another photo op that might convince some no-brainer somewhere that Hey! He/she is cool! They know about - fill in the blank - and another potential vote might be in the bag. [MOPO] POSTER SALES
Hi Richard, When you invited us to join your new poster auction site you never responded. I thought that you didn't receive my email but now it's come to my attention that you are jealous of my successful results with Profiles in History last year. I have more posters in my collection and just wanted to help you out by bringing some high end titles and see how we could do together. I was also going to refer other big collectors to you. How odd that you show such keen jealousy - I thought that your site's intention was to bring more sellers to help build up the business. Unfortunate and perplexing that you're taking another position. I can't understand why the results of my Profiles auction would have anything to do with selling more posters on your site.
