Oh, yes, especially if they buddy read. Might need more than just a little
support though. Definitely the content of her books lends itself to a
familiarity to aid comprehension even with less than optimal accuracy.

Re: [MOSAIC] 4th g Can't get started on writing tasks (ASPERGER'S)

2008-09-24 Thread Kare
Jenn,

Visualizing and vocalizing are very effective techniques, so it's no wonder
that your students are doing so well. Regarding your student who needs to
find what works for her for getting started, I have a couple of suggestions,
but they can either be the best or worst ideas for this particular case.
First idea addresses the perfectionism - Have this student do two or
three "Quick starts" and then choose which one she wants to develop into the
full paper. Idea two addresses the need for some students to have their own
routine, similar to establishing a bedtime ritual - Have this student
develop the habit of making a quick outline, and then continue writing
according to the outlined plan. If those ideas don't work, please keep
seeking other ideas. Something will work.

Kare

Jenn wrote: I have a student who doesn't exactly fit the usual profile at my
office.
Once she gets started she does write fairly well but getting her started is
IMPOSSIBLE. I think there is a component of perfectionism and some
embarrassment when she doesn't start off like the rest of the crowd.

autobiography Firetalking is great if you're planning on doing an author

can get, you will use them and your kids will love them. Also, you may know

Re: [MOSAIC] conferring with students

2008-09-24 Thread KJCecere
I develop a peer conference form off of the rubric the students are using for a
particular study. It basically has two parts, "What I liked about the
Writing," and "Opportunities to make it even better." They share their writing
with each other and then itemize a specific "Plan of Action," and then both
sign the form. This has to be consistent with the rubric. For example, if the
rubric indicates use of multi-sensory description, then they might comment, "I
like how you used "," when you described . For Opportunities
to make it even better, a comment might be, "You may want to think about
additional description when you write about ___. "

To keep the classroom as student centered as possible and reinforce that we all
learn from each other, I keep an "Expert" board on one of the bulletin boards.
During writing conferences, when it is evident that a particular student has a
wonderful understanding of either a skill or concept, they can be considered an
expert. That category is posted and there name is placed on a post-it under
that category. I have used this both with individuals who have excellent
computer skills such as developing a powerpoint presentation or an element of
writing - such as using flashback in their piece. If an individual then asks
me how to do a powerpoint, I would direct them to the expert board and they in
turn would ask the "expert." If a student wanted to use a flashback when
writing a memoir, they would go to the expert board and see who had
successfully incorporated flashback into their writing and then conference with
that "expert."

I hope that helps!

Regarding the textbook adoption, we are piloting the Rigby program Literacy
by Design. It is a pretty comprehensive program with lots and lots of
leveled texts. It does a fantastic job of teaching comprehension. We have
worked on making connections quite a bit. It has been neat to watch the
students grow in this area. The word study component is so so. We are just
getting started though. It is worth checking out. I believe you can get
free samples from the website
 rigby.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/literacydesign_home.

Our county is beginning the?textbook adoption process for ELA/Reading. We
are working hard to help our teachers teach reading using Balanced Literacy.
Have any of you adopted materials that you feel really support the use of
Balanced Literacy? I have a sample of Celebration Press's "Good Habits,
Great Readers", which has?lots of guided reading support and shared reading
even through upper elementary. They?address good comprehension strategies
thorughout and it looks pretty good. Do you know of any other good
matierals??We don't necessarily need to adopt a basal, and in fact are
wanting to look "outside the box" on this and try to buy more leveled
readers as support for teachers if possible. But we nknow that new teachers
need support to help them organize their day. Any insights you can offer
would be greatly appreciated!

Keith,

I must have missed (overlooked) the info on how to be apart of the book
review. I had been watching for it to start, but only saw Elisa. Sorry
for the confusion. It was a great book and would like to add comments.

I am so sorry to ask for this again, I must have deleted the

using comics in the classroom, I am needing some ideas.

[MOSAIC] Very Disabled Readers

2008-09-24 Thread PAltm81324
I am currently teaching reading to students in grades 6 and 8 in small group
classes with children who are severely disabled in reading. I am working on
the strategies with them and have started with them hearing their inner voice
as
they read.  We are  having difficulty with this even with me modeling and
doing read alouds with them practicing. How would you approach reading with
students like this?

My second dilemma is that I have the 8th graders every other day which makes
having any kind of continuity nearly impossible.  Any ideas how to best
structure a class like this?

[MOSAIC] 4th g Can't get started on writing tasks (ASPERGER'S)

2008-09-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Admittedly this is my area of expertise (Asperger's and other social
cognitive deficits) but I would love to tap into you--expert wrting teachers
out there.

My students (private practice) are in the midst of learning LINDAMOOD BELL
V&V to jumpstart pictures in their brains to facilitate their writing (very
concrete thinkers who need to use better Executive Functioning skills,
working memory and abstract/creative thinking). Most of my students can get
'unstuck' between the V&V exercises, visual organizers, EXPLICIT steps re:
what to do first, second and so on. HOWEVER...

I have a student who doesn't exactly fit the usual profile at my office.
Once she gets started she does write fairly well but getting her started is
IMPOSSIBLE. I think there is a component of perfectionism and some
embarrassment when she doesn't start off like the rest of the crowd.

Any thoughts?

Re: [MOSAIC] What are your top 7 favorite Patricia Polacco books?

2008-09-24 Thread Zey, Melissa
Wow! Where do you start with Patricia Polacco. They are all so fabulous! My
all time favorite is The Bee Tree. Then Thank you Mr. Falker (caution: this
one will bring you to tears), Chicken Sunday, Mrs. Mack, Picnic at Mudsock
Meadow, Thunder Cake, and When Lightening Comes In a Jar. All of these make
great read alouds--discussing vocabulary, strategies, etc. I use The Bee Tree
to introduce my classroom library and Thank you Mr. Falker to talk about how we
are all different and each subject in school is going to have strengths and
weaknesses for all of us. I don't think Patricia Polacco's books are the best
for a classroom library in second grade since there are so many rich topics and
incredible vocabulary words--the teaching moments are too precious.

Just an idea, but I have used tin stove burner covers. You know the ones your
grandma most likely had that had something decorative like an apple on it that
was placed over each stove burner. You can find them in a set of 4 at most
dollar stores. They are magnetic and you can write on them with white board
markers as well. The two smaller ones in the set are kind of a waste but the
two larger covers work great and are the perfect size!
