[MOSAIC] In2Books
I wanted to share a "program" called In2books with you all. I think it may have been on this list serve that I first heard about it. It's an amazing program that pairs a student with an adult pen pal. The pen pals have been vetted. Each student receives 5 books which cover 5 genres. This year we started with fiction. We had a list of 5 books the students could choose from, and the teacher could change the student selection. The student and the pen pal read the same book, and then using the computer which has lots of helpful info, they each write a letter. The teacher is the "gate-keeper" who reads each letter and approves them. So as the teacher I read each students letter and approve it, plus I read each pen pal's letter and approve them. It's a little work, but so worth it. After the whole class finishes a book and has written their letter, we move on to the next genre. This all ties in with response to literature, which is key for my fourth graders, and also ties in with common core standards. I'm convinced it helped my student's test scores last year. It's worth looking into. Nina Zolt is the person to contact. Her email is nz...@corpepal.com. You can go to In2books.com to check out the site. Hi, I' m not sure what state you're in, but in CA we have 4 genres we teach to the 4th graders so they'll be ready for the state test. They are summary of narrative, summary of expository, response to lit, and narrative. Starting with the first genre, I read a picture book, say "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th St.". Then we story map it looking for the antaganist, protaganist, setting, wish, conflict, and resolution. From there we summarize using cause and effect for our summary. A great site that I like is writingfix.com. [MOSAIC] PLC and assessments
I've been following the conversation and Liz, our district has developed formatives and summatives for ELA and math. We have 2 formstive ELA tests and then a trimester. We have the students use bubble sheets and then scan the information into Measures/Datawise. It complies the info for individual classes and a grade level and breaks it down by standards. It's very handy when looking for strengths and weaknesses. Because my school is program improvement we went to workshops where we developed learning cycles using the standards that are "red" occur mostly on the state test. We do a pretest, teach, post test, reteach (rti) and go on. It's very handy. Each grade level has 90 minutes a week to look at data and determine the direction for the grade level. We share strategies and encouragement. My principal is awesome. She gives us leeway to group the children in flexible ways. The teacher with the highest scores shares strategies and usually takes the reteach group. Students who master the skill on the pretest (show mastery) go to an enrich group. We had good results last year and are refining it for next year. Julia, The EO is English only and ELL is English Language Learners. :) I know, sometimes I don't have a clue what the acronym is people are using. I love your idea! A quiet rebellion. I have a CAFE chart (similar to the Sisters from Daily 5) on the wall and the children refer to it all the time when reading. It's not on any testing per se, but the comprehension and word analysis strategies are exactly what the kids need. I know what best practices are and I feel that I'm being dragged away from them. It confuses me when I know what is best for the kids, yet I'm pulled by our PLC group and the district. I feel that kids at my school need 3rd grade, 3rd 1/2 grade, 4th grade, etc. They need time to grow in the English language. We have a title 1 school in our district that has received numerous awards for achievement with ELL students, yet when we receive these same students they are no longer proficient...why would that be? [MOSAIC] common formative assessments
Donna, We are also creating our own CFAs (common formative assessments) and then using the data. Between 3 teachers we divide up the work, but it's still test, test, test. When the students realize all they have to do is blow the test, wow, imagine what would happen. Someone shared a site called: mastery connect (masteryconnect.com or .net). Teachers all over the country are sharing CFAs for the new standards. In some ways I think the new standards are easier, but having the technology to pull of the testing is going to require some big bucks (and my state is already in financial distress). Anyway, I've gone to the site and pulled off some tests to use with my kids. It's great if all band together to get the job done! [MOSAIC] summatives
My district mandates a formative (district made with teacher input) every 3-4 weeks, and a summative or trimester test before report cards. We use a program called "Measures" that allows you to see how your class performed overall and by individual standards. I feel like we test, test, test, test. The district also pulls the trimester scores and compares schools. Unfortunately they are comparing EO schools to Title 1 schools and the latter don't fare as well. Bah Humbug...for testing. Yes, the info drives the curr. but I feel we are cheating the students in so many ways. I just don't agree to teaching to the test. Probably didn't answer your question, but it felt good to share. [MOSAIC] 9/11 ideas
Justin was asking how I got the Haiti project started...Have you ever had a moment in your class when learning veered all for the right reasons. Actually I think after the earthquake I read the book to the kids and then showed the video. Then, as children can do, they were inspired and asked how they could help Haiti. This lead to researching groups such as Red Cross, World Vision, etc to see the best group to give money to and researching Haiti. This lead to writing news broadcasts which we taped and shared. One of the students suggested collecting coins for Haiti which the principal ok'd and the VP took an active role. We called it "Change for a change" and the race was on. They made necklaces with the art teacher and sold them at the neighborhood food fest. Money had to be sorted and counted. It was amazing! And that's how it happens. Relay for Life wasn't as exciting, different group of kids, but they made signs and sold small things from home..old toys, books, etc. Sorry for the length of this response! ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org Search the MOSAIC archives at http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive

Re: [MOSAIC] Words their Way
This is from the book Words Their Way. Homework Mon. Sort your words like we did in school and explain the sort to your parents, then sort the words as fast as you can. Tues. Do a buddy sort with a parent. Lay down a word for each catagory header, have your parent read the word aloud and point to the correct sort without seeing the word. Then, look at the word and move it to the correct catagory. Repeat if you make more than one error. Wed. Word hunt~find words from a familiar book that have the same sound, pattern or both. Try to find two or three from each catagory. Thurs. Complete a writing sort to prepare for the test. The parent should call out the words in random order and the child should write the word in the catagories. I only give the students ten words for the test, although they usually have between 15 and 20 on their list. Students earn one point for spelling and one point for the correct sort. I then give one word that follows the pattern, but that was not on the list, for a bonus point. This lets me know if the student is able to apply the spelling patterns they have learned. Hi Karen, I have been using Words Their Way in my third grade classroom for the past two years. I find it manageable to have three differnent levels in my class at one time. I use the pretests to determine the levels and then place the students as close to their level as possible. I reassess their levels every 9 week period and move students accordingly. Students do most of their word study with spelling partners at school and I give a spelling test to each group on Thursdays. I meet with each group on Friday to go over their new spelling patterns. They record their new words and sorts in spelling notebooks. Students are responsible to practice using the sorting activities for homework. Hope this helps. Re: [MOSAIC] Independent Reading - Question/help
When I'm doing guided reading groups, my third graders are reading books for enjoyments. They write me letters about a book they are reading once a week and I write back. They also complete a log and write the title of the book, genre and write down the date they finish the book. The don't record the pages they read every day. If they are reading a book that pertains to the strategy we are learning, they are able to share at the end of reading workshop. If not, they listen to others share. I use a reading workshop rubric that requires students to read at least 4 books at their just right level from 2 different genres. I guess I'm lucky that nobody tells me how to teach reading, at least not yet. [MOSAIC] text structure
Hello, I am in need of your expertise. I've just started teaching 4th grade and part of our writing program/comprehension is expository text structure. I bought the book nonfiction reading power and have been using the information, but after going to a district inservice, I realized they really want the students to be able to read a text and determine if the author used compare/contrast, cause/effect, etc. Does anyone have resources or know of a site that has paragraphs showing each of these for a 4th grade level? The reason the students have to know this is that on the 4th grade writing test in March, expository text might be one they have to respond to. Yes, I look at the areas they did well on and the areas in need of work. Some of the frustration is that they are not reading at grade level, but all have made great gains so far this year. Renee, we have very vocal teachers at our school and they do speak out how innapropriate these tests are (especially for 2nd graders). Our district has formative and summative tests for reading which includes phonics, written conventions, and comprehension. My students, 14 are ELL's and 8 are below grade level, did poorly. Only 45% passed if you look at the test overall. Some of their mistakes were careless, but I know the principal is really anxious for the students to pass the Calif. state test in the spring (yes, we test 2nd graders...go figure). I guess I'm looking for encouragement because I know you're all positive thinkers. I'm trying to decide what to do with the info. I spend time on comprehension strategies...predicting, visualizing, etc. but maybe I need to change my focus. They are improving in the comprehension area. Ok, help!!! What would the other half be doing while you did reading work shop with 10 students? Brenda Oh/3 Denise Ross <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I would like to pose this question regarding the pros and cons of a particular schedule to any or all of you who have experience with reading workshop. If given the following two options for a first grade reading workshop schedule, which would you prefer? Option 1: 90 minutes between recess and lunch (10:30 am - 12 noon) with 20 students. Option 2: 45 mins. with 10 students, followed by 45 mins. with the other 10 students; recess; then 45 mins of whole group. Obviously, with Option 1, you have 90 consecutive minutes, but with 20 students the entire time. With Option 2, there would only be 10 students during each of the two 45 minutes periods, making it easier to do guided reading, reading conferences, etc. The whole group time would follow the small group time after recess. However, with all the necessary transition time, you'd probably lose minutes and not have 90 full minutes of workshop. Also, it wouldn't be as easy to change groupings because the special teachers (that the students go to during half-group time) don't appreciate constant changes to their classes. Does the benefit of the two groups of 10 children outweigh the choppiness of the workshop? I would appreciate any feedback you can provide. Thank you. Denise Ross Literacy Coord.
