[MOSAIC] Lit

2014-07-07 Thread Brenda Keller
My class has learned so much from "Circuit". It's the true story of a migrant
family in Calif. In the 1900s. They also loved "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Ryan
Muñoz. It is set in the 1800s. Both are great for discussion.

[MOSAIC] In2Books

2013-02-19 Thread Brenda White-Keller
I wanted to share a "program" called In2books with you all.  I think it may
have been on this list serve that I first heard about it.  It's an amazing
program that pairs a student with an adult pen pal.  The pen pals have been
vetted.  Each student receives 5 books which cover 5 genres.  This year we
started with fiction.  We had a list of 5 books the students could choose from,
and the teacher could change the student selection.  The student and the pen
pal read the same book, and then using the computer which has lots of helpful
info, they each write a letter.  The teacher is the "gate-keeper" who reads
each letter and approves them.  So as the teacher I read each students letter
and approve it, plus I read each pen pal's letter and approve them.  It's a
little work, but so worth it.  After the whole class finishes a book and has
written their letter, we move on to the next genre.  This all ties in with
response to literature, which is key
for my fourth graders, and also ties in with common core standards. I'm
convinced it helped my student's test scores last year.   It's worth looking
into.  Nina Zolt is the person to contact.  Her email is nz...@corpepal.com.
You can go to In2books.com to check out the site.
Thanks,
Brenda

[MOSAIC] Narrative nonfiction

Great conversation. I also read the article, but now I need to find resources

told as a narrative. With that said, do any of you know of narrative

In California, at least in my district, we are looking at the common core

Our third grade team uses Words Their Way and differentiates for the entire

There is a mixup in the post. My name made it on someone else's post. I have a
very differentiated class. I have two kiddos that are beginning second grade in
reading. Therefore their spelling is about that as well. I also have 3rd /4th
grade level, 5th grade level and a sprinkling of great spellers.  I teach a 5th
grade classroom but have all title and resource kiddos.  I'm looking for a
program to fit all those needs. I have heard nothing but good things about
Words Their Way I have purchased the main book but am looking to see what other
resources anyone knows about that works with it. I will appreciate any
suggestions.

[MOSAIC] Evalia

2012-08-25 Thread Brenda Keller

Hi, I' m not sure what state you're in, but in CA we have 4 genres we teach to
the 4th graders so they'll be ready for the state test. They are summary of
narrative, summary of expository, response to lit, and narrative. Starting
with the first genre, I read a picture book, say "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th
St.". Then we story map it looking for the antaganist, protaganist, setting,
wish, conflict, and resolution. From there we summarize using cause and effect
for our summary. A great site that I like is writingfix.com. Good luck this
year

[MOSAIC] PLC and assessments

2012-06-18 Thread Brenda White-Keller
I've been following the conversation and Liz, our district has developed
formatives and summatives for ELA and math.  We have 2 formstive ELA tests and
then a trimester.  We have the students use bubble sheets and then scan the
information into Measures/Datawise.  It complies the info for individual
classes and a grade level and breaks it down by standards.  It's very handy
when looking for strengths and weaknesses.  Because my school is program
improvement we went to workshops where we developed learning cycles using the
standards that are "red" occur mostly on the state test.  We do a pretest,
teach, post test, reteach (rti) and go on.  It's very handy.  Each grade level
has 90 minutes a week to look at data and determine the direction for the grade
level.  We share strategies and encouragement.  My principal is awesome.  She
gives us leeway to group the children in flexible ways.  The teacher with the
highest scores shares strategies and
usually takes the reteach group.  Students who master the skill on the pretest
(show mastery) go to an enrich group.  We had good results last year and are
refining it for next year.
Hope this helps,
Brenda

[MOSAIC] CAFE

2011-12-28 Thread Brenda White-Keller
CAFE stands for comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand vocabulary.  As I
introduce strategies we make cards with the name on it like: prediction,
dictionary, questions, chunk the word, etc.  This way the kids have a reference
point.  This was developed by "the Sisters" who wrote Daily 5 and CAFE.  They
are easy reads and great management systems.  They have a yahoo group and on
proteacher site people have submitted lots of resources (and on the yahoo group
also).   I hope this helps.

[MOSAIC] summative

2011-12-27 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Julia,
The EO is English only and ELL is English Language Learners. :)  I know,
sometimes I don't have a clue what the acronym is people are using.
I love your idea! A quiet rebellion.  I have a CAFE chart (similar to the
Sisters from Daily 5) on the wall and the children refer to it all the time
when
reading.  It's not on any testing per se, but the comprehension and word
analysis strategies are exactly what the kids need. I know what best practices
are and I feel that I'm being dragged away from them.  It confuses me when I
know what is best for the kids, yet I'm pulled by our PLC group and the
district.  I feel that kids at my school need 3rd grade, 3rd 1/2 grade, 4th
grade, etc.  They need time to grow in the English language.  We have a title 1
school in our district that has received numerous awards for achievement with
ELL students, yet when we receive these same students they are no longer
proficient...why would that be?

Happy Holidays to all.  I have 3 weeks off and I plan to enjoy it!

[MOSAIC] common formative assessments

2011-12-27 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Donna,
We are also creating our own CFAs (common formative assessments) and then using
the data.  Between 3 teachers we divide up the work, but it's still test, test,
test.  When the students realize all they have to do is blow the test, wow,
imagine what would happen.

Someone shared a site called:  mastery connect (masteryconnect.com or .net).
Teachers all over the country are sharing CFAs for the new standards.  In some
ways I think the new standards are easier, but having the technology to pull of
the testing is going to require some big bucks (and my state is already in
financial distress).   Anyway, I've gone to the site and pulled off some tests
to use with my kids.  It's great if all band together to get the job done!
Happy Holidays,

[MOSAIC] summatives

2011-12-26 Thread Brenda White-Keller
My district mandates a formative (district made with teacher input) every 3-4
weeks, and a summative or trimester test before report cards.  We use a program
called "Measures" that allows you to see how your class performed overall and
by
individual standards.  I feel like we test, test, test, test.  The district
also
pulls the trimester scores and compares schools.  Unfortunately they are
comparing EO schools to Title 1 schools and the latter don't fare as well.  Bah
Humbug...for testing.  Yes, the info drives the curr. but I feel we are
cheating
the students in so many ways.  I just don't agree to teaching to the test.
Probably didn't answer your question, but it felt good to share.

[MOSAIC] nonfiction texts and help with a strategy

2011-09-25 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Hi,  You all are the first I turn to for help.  I'm writing a grant and want to
get short nonfiction readers for my 4th grade classroom.  I have kids reading
from PP-8th grade level.   I bought some Okapi readers several years ago and
they are wonderful.  Written at diff levels with diff. text structures the kids
eat them up!  I need some new readers.  Any ideas?

Also, my students are having trouble making predictions using prior knowledge
and info from the text.  Any great lessons that really make that stick?  We've
been predicting and questioning since school started, but they are having
trouble applying it to a test situation.

We have recently implemented a Reading/Writing Workshop approach for grades 3-5

phonics is not being explicitly taught.  We do use Words Their Way.  In
addition, teachers include word attack skills during some of the mini-lessons.
How do other schools address this issue?

[MOSAIC] 9/11 ideas

2011-08-09 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Justin was asking how I got the Haiti project started...Have you ever had a
moment in your class when learning veered all for the right reasons.  Actually
I
think after the earthquake I read the book to the kids and then showed the
video.  Then, as children can do, they were inspired and asked how they could
help Haiti.  This lead to researching groups such as Red Cross, World Vision,
etc to see the best group to give money to and researching Haiti.  This lead to
writing news broadcasts which we taped and shared.  One of the students
suggested collecting coins for Haiti which the principal ok'd and the VP took
an
active role.  We called it "Change for a change" and the race was on.  They
made
necklaces with the art teacher and sold them at the neighborhood food
fest. Money had to be sorted and counted.  It was amazing!  And that's how it
happens.  Relay for Life wasn't as exciting, different group of kids, but they
made signs and sold small things from home..old toys, books, etc.  Sorry for
the
length of this response!

[MOSAIC] 9/11 book

2011-08-07 Thread Brenda White-Keller
I used "14 Cows for America" to talk about 9/11 with my students.  The book
deals with a tribe in Africa "symbolically" giving 14 cows, their most prized
possessions, to NYC.  The first year I read the book the students were able to
apply what they learned by doing something for earthquake survivors in Haiti.
This last year they helped with the Relay for Life.  I felt this gave the
students purpose and a way to look outside themselves, many for the first time.

[MOSAIC] ESL students

2010-06-22 Thread Brenda
Hello Everyone,
I have been reading this list serve for many years and would like to ask for
some help.  I teach a self-contained inclusive third grade classroom.
Next year I will have two ELS students in my class.  We seldom have students
who do not speak English as their first language in our rural Ohio school.  I
was wondering if anyone has suggestions for teaching reading/writing or some
good resources that I could purchase to read over the summer?
Thanks,
Brenda

Re: [MOSAIC] Words their Way

2010-06-13 Thread Brenda
This is from the book Words Their Way.
Homework
Mon. Sort your words like we did in school and explain the sort to your
parents, then sort the words as fast as you can.
Tues. Do a buddy sort with a parent.  Lay down a word for each catagory header,
have your parent read the word aloud and point to the correct sort without
seeing the word.  Then, look at the word and move it to the correct catagory.
Repeat if you make more than one error.
Wed.  Word hunt~find words from a familiar book that have the same sound,
pattern or both.  Try to find two or three from each catagory.
Thurs.  Complete a writing sort to prepare for the test.  The parent
should call out the words in random order and the child should write the word
in the catagories.

I only give the students ten words for the test, although they usually have
between 15 and 20 on their list.  Students earn one point for spelling and one
point for the correct sort.  I then give one word that follows the pattern, but
that was not on the list, for a bonus point.  This lets me know if the student
is able to apply the spelling patterns they have learned.

Thanks,
Brenda

Re: [MOSAIC] Words their Way

2010-06-12 Thread Brenda
Hi Karen,
I have been using Words Their Way in my third grade classroom for the past two
years.  I find it manageable to have three differnent levels in my class at one
time.  I use the pretests to determine the levels and then place the students
as close to their level as possible.  I reassess their levels every 9
week period and move students accordingly.

Students do most of their word study with spelling partners at school and I
give a spelling test to each group on Thursdays.  I meet with each group on
Friday to go over their new spelling patterns.  They record their new words and
sorts in spelling notebooks.  Students are responsible to practice using the
sorting activities for homework.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Words their Way

Hi there

Apologies for cross posting

I am interested in hearing from teachers who are using 'Words Their Way' as
part of their spelling and vocab. program.  I particularly would like to
know more about how it is managed in the room when you have children at
various levels.

The program is becoming very popular here (Queensland, Australia)  and
schools are finding it is improving data.  I know from previous threads on
these lists there are quite a few of you that use it, so I thought I would
go straight to the experts!

Any information you can provide would be a great assistance.

Kind regards,

Karen Back

Re: [MOSAIC] Independent Reading - Question/help

2009-09-20 Thread Brenda
When I'm doing guided reading groups, my third graders are reading books for
enjoyments.  They write me letters about a book they are reading once a week
and I write back.  They also complete a log and write the title of the book,
genre and write down the date they finish the book.  The don't record the pages
they read every day.  If they are reading a book that pertains to the strategy
we are learning, they are able to share at the end of reading workshop.  If
not, they listen to others share.  I use a reading workshop rubric that
requires students to read at least 4 books at their just right level from 2
different genres.

I guess I'm lucky that nobody tells me how to teach reading, at least not yet.

[MOSAIC] text structure

2009-08-23 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Hello,  I am in need of your expertise.  I've just started teaching 4th grade
and part of our writing program/comprehension is expository text structure.  I
bought the book nonfiction reading power and have been using the information,
but after going to a district inservice, I realized they really want the
students to be able to read a text and determine if the author used
compare/contrast, cause/effect, etc.  Does anyone have resources or know of a
site that has paragraphs showing each of these for a 4th grade level?  The
reason the students have to know this is that on the 4th grade writing test in
March, expository text might be one they have to respond to.  Any help would be
greatly appreciated so that my students can be successful!

[MOSAIC] testing

Yes, I look at the areas they did well on and the areas in need of work.  Some
of the frustration is that they are not reading at grade level, but all have
made great gains so far this year.  Renee, we have very vocal teachers at our
school and they do speak out how innapropriate these tests are (especially for
2nd graders).  I am very excited to use the drawer, staircase, and lightbulb
idea with my students.  They are understanding comprehension strategies in
their leveled readers!  Thanks for you support.

[MOSAIC] reading tests

Our district has formative and summative tests for reading which includes
phonics, written conventions, and comprehension.  My students, 14 are ELL's and
8 are below grade level, did poorly.  Only 45% passed if you look at the test
overall.  Some of their mistakes were careless, but I know the principal is
really anxious for the students to pass the Calif. state test in the spring
(yes, we test 2nd graders...go figure).  I guess I'm looking for encouragement
because I know you're all positive thinkers.  I'm trying to decide what to do
with the info.  I spend time on comprehension strategies...predicting,
visualizing, etc. but maybe I need to change my focus.  They are improving in
the comprehension area.  Ok, help!!!

IRA's most current Reading Today newsletter has a good article on the
investigations into Reading First, and I think there is other news online at
IRA's website.

I have found Rigby to be an excellent guided reading source and their new
"Literacy by Design" series has modeled, shared, interactive, and guided
reading components as well as a writing component. I have seen samples of
the program at a conference and was quite pleased with their visuals
(charts, posters, graphic organizers, and blackline masters, etc) for each
of the reading strategies. We're having a sample set shipped to our school
to examine it in depth, but my first impression was, "Wow!" You can check
it out by copying and pasting in this address in your Internet browser:

Anyone have first-hand experience with this new program?

[MOSAIC] internet web sites for reading or math

2007-03-12 Thread Brenda White-Keller
HI, I've gleaned so much new info from this site. Does anyone have web sites
that keep track of a student's progress in reading or math? Also they would
have to be free sites. Thanks in advance.

[MOSAIC] ESL websites

2007-03-05 Thread Brenda White-Keller
Have any of you tried starfall.com It's great for ELLs and English only
readers. It has phonics, vocabulary, interactive stories, and it's free!
Also, google online storyline. The screen actors guild has members read
children's lit. It's great. My ESL students are learning so much from
starfall. They not only see the words, they hear it and can read with it.
Have fun! Anyone have great math sites?
  Thanks, Brenda

Re: [MOSAIC] Reading Workshop Schedule

2006-10-18 Thread Brenda
What would the other half be doing while you did reading work shop with 10
students?

I would like to pose this question regarding the pros and cons of a
particular schedule to any or all of you who have experience with reading
workshop. If given the following two options for a first grade reading workshop
schedule, which would you prefer?

Option 1: 90 minutes between recess and lunch (10:30 am - 12 noon) with 20
students.

Option 2: 45 mins. with 10 students, followed by 45 mins. with the other 10
students; recess; then 45 mins of whole group.

Obviously, with Option 1, you have 90 consecutive minutes, but with 20 students
the entire time. With Option 2, there would only be 10 students during each of
the two 45 minutes periods, making it easier to do guided reading, reading
conferences, etc. The whole group time would follow the small group time after
recess. However, with all the necessary transition time, you'd probably lose
minutes and not have 90 full minutes of workshop. Also, it wouldn't be as easy
to change groupings because the special teachers (that the students go to
during half-group time) don't appreciate constant changes to their classes.

Does the benefit of the two groups of 10 children outweigh the choppiness of
the workshop? I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Thank you.

Carol,
I found some good articles to use with the kit from Scholastic New online.

HELP! Three third grade teachers asked me to do this very lesson in their
classrooms next week. I brought home the lesson. But after all the
negative experiences with Sleeping Beauty, I'm wondering if I should use
it.
I plan to read the lesson tomorrow and look in the Sunday paper for a
better text to use with it. Any suggestions for what really worked?
Thanks,
