[mou-net] birds and neonicotinoids --- American Bird Conservancy

2020-11-15 Thread Gordon Andersson
I get a "Bird of the Week" email each week from ABC. (This week's bird is
the Violet-Green Swallow.) Each week provides photos, video, audio, map,
and text about the species. The effect of pesticides, including neonics, is
mentioned in the text this week. The link is provided below. There you can
read about neonics and their effect of birds and insects, including
pollinators. Neonics are systemic, being absorbed thoughout the plant
including the nectar, pollen, and fruit. Seed companies also pre-treat ag
crop seeds with the pesticide (corn and others). Birds are poisoned by
eating both contaminated seeds and any insects that ingested the poison.
The greatest effect on bird populations may be a direct effect on insect
numbers due to spraying and fugitive dust (during field seed planting).

One link in the article provides a list of neonics sold for lawn, garden,
and trees/shrubs, with mfr and percent active ingredient. There are other
links to studies throughout the article. The most recent I opened was 2017.
I don't think USEPA has acted to regulate this family of chemicals, altho it
may still be "under study". European countries are doing so. The large
study ABC published on effects of neonics on birds was 2013-- another link
in this article, if you missed it earlier.

[mou-net] Birds breeding for shorter period as temperature rises--Finland study ---- PNAS journal

2020-07-24 Thread Gordon Andersson

Birds breeding for shorter period as temperature rises

Birds are breeding earlier in the spring and for a shorter time, which could
increase competition for food and threaten survival. The average breeding
period for birds in Finland was 1.7 days shorter in 2017 than in 1975, while
the average temperature rose by 0.8 degrees Celsius, suggesting that global
warming is narrowing birds' breeding windows, a study in Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences found.

Global warming shrinks bird breeding windows, potentially threatening species

By Charlotte HartleyJul.
20, 2020 , 3:00 PM

For breeding birds, timing is everything. Most species have just a narrow
window to get the food they need to feed their brood—after spring’s bounty has
sprung, but before other bird species swoop in to compete. Now, a new study
suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but
their breeding windows are also shrinking—some by as many as 4 to 5 days. This
could lead to increased competition for food that might threaten many bird
populations.

Birds typically time their breeding to cues signaling the start of spring, so
that their chicks hatch when food like plants and insects is most abundant. But
global warming has pushed many species
 to breed earlier in
the year; that effect is especially prominent at higher latitudes, where
temperatures are rising faster than near the equator. Few studies, however,
have examined how climate change affects the duration of breeding windows,
which closely track the number of chicks born each year as well as overall
population trends.

To find out how the length of breeding periods has changed over time, a team
led by Maria Hällfors, an ecologist at the University of Helsinki, analyzed an
 extensive data set from amateur
ornithologists coordinated by the Finnish Museum of Natural History. The data
set spans from 1975 to 2017 and includes the nesting records of 73 species and
more than 820,000 birds from a 1000-square-kilometer area in Finland’s boreal
forests. Each year, trained volunteers placed uniquely numbered rings around
the legs of newly hatched chicks to track their movements and survival. Because
chicks had to be a certain size to get a ring, the researchers were able to use
the timing of the tagging to work out when each chick had hatched—and therefore
when breeding had occurred.

On average, the beginnings and ends of the breeding periods are occurring
earlier in the year, Hällfors and colleagues report today in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences. However, the ends are shifting back faster
than the beginnings, resulting in
 an average breeding
window that is 1.7 days shorter in 2017 than it was in 1975. During that same
period, Finland’s average temperature rose by 0.8oC, suggesting many bird
species are actively responding to changing temperatures, Hällfors says.

“It’s good for the species if it’s able to follow the optimum conditions as the
climate changes,” she says. However, the shorter breeding windows mean more
birds are breeding earlier in the season—a risky time for chicks’ survival,
especially if the weather turns suddenly cold. In addition, because many
late-season species are shifting their breeding windows up, that could mean
more competition for food and nesting sites early on, leaving some chicks to go
hungry. Although the researchers were unable to tease out overall population
trends from their data set, Hällfors expects these shifts will have a large
impact on bird numbers, with some species outcompeting others.

Lucyna Halupka, an ecologist at the University of Wrocław, calls the study “a
very important paper” because it’s one of the few to measure the breeding
period duration. For 2 decades, she says, many scientists studying birds and
climate change have looked only at the earliest, median, or mean laying dates
for specific groups of birds. However, she cautions that because the study is
limited to Finland, the findings may not apply universally; future studies
should examine how breeding seasons move in other regions where the effect of
climate change is different. They should also try to determine how shifting
breeding windows affect population sizes, she says.

For Hällfors, the new findings illustrate the power of long-term data sets.
“Imagine the bird-ringing ornithologists in the 1970s,” she says. “They
probably couldn’t have imagined that their data would be used in 2020 to look
at climate change.” It’s also a valuable addition to other ongoing climate
change research, says conservation biologist Stuart Butchart of BirdLife
International. “Many people still

This morning we walked south from the dam to the flooded section of
trail just upstream from the Hwy. 610 bridge.  Waterfowl were almost
absent (except geese & mallards), but there were a few other birds worth
noting.

Bald Eagle - 2 on the new nest across from Coon Creek; no activity at
the nest just below the dam
Osprey - 1 on the nest platform on the west side; as we drove to the dam
we also saw 2 on the light tower nest in Al Flynn Park
Great Blue Heron - 8 birds at the 4-nest rookery!  2 of the nests had
pairs and we saw nest-building at both; 2 nests each had a single heron;
2 herons were not at nests

Common Loon - 1 on Cenaiko Lake
D-C Cormorants - ~10 perched on an island, others in flight, 1 on Cenaiko L.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 5
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 1
Eastern Phoebe - saw 3 investigating nest sites under overhangs of 2
structures

Tree Swallows - about a dozen feeding over the river
Brown-headed Cowbirds - saw our first 2 females of the year, closely
attended by 3 males

Stay safe.

 To whom it may concern:

I am sending again because I wasn't certain I did it correctly the first
time around.

The Park Board Commission of the City of Minnetonka has released its
mountain biking trail study and proposed plan which it has just recommended
to be reviewed by City Council, which are in draft form. Here are links
where you can view these two documents:

Study: https://eminnetonka.com/images/recreation/DRAFT-

Plan: https://eminnetonka.com/images/recreation/MTB%20trail%
20concept%20poster.pdf?utm_content=_medium=email_
name=_source=govdelivery_term=

There are over 99 species of bird which have been recorded in that park,
including birds like Scarlet Tanagers. There is some concern, such as those
stated by Conserve Lone Lake Park, over how these trails may impact the
composition and abundance of bird species in the park. Specifically, there
is research that shows MTB trails or any new trails which pass too close to
nesting site may impede reproductive success and that certain species may
leave the area entirely. I wanted to reach out to you to see if 1) you had
any further available resources, and 2) if anyone there may be interested
in helping to analyze what impacts the birds in the park may face if this
plan is approved as is. It is a relatively small park with a plan to
construct 4.7 miles of 1 to 2 foot wide trail with portions of trail as
close as 25 feet together in some sections in a 146 acre park.

Here are the 99 species recorded (the "over 99" part was what was said at

But see this article in the May-June 2014 issue of Audubon:
http://www.audubonmagazine.org/articles/living/tall-grasses-might-be-key-cutting-birdstrikes.
Some airports are now growing tall grasses, which deter big birds while
providing habitat for smaller birds that are not a hazard for aircraft.

[mou-net] Birds not Ads addendum

2014-04-13 Thread Pete Makousky
Apparently I am the only one having the issue so I will just clarify that
this was a web browser issue.

I am using Google Chrome and was having AdChoice ads popping up.

I installed a AdBlock extension and now all is fine.

Sorry for the non-bird post.

[mou-net] Birds at the Coon Rapids Dam this past week

2014-04-08 Thread Ron Taube
Hi
There are a fair amount of waterfowl above the Coon Rapids Dam this past week.
Yesterday and today I have walked above the Brooklyn Park side and around the
construction zone to the river to find as many as several thousand waterfowl.
Fair amounts of Scaup, mostly lesser I think, redheads(at least a dozen today)
Bufflehead, hooded mergansers, common mergansers, ruddy ducks, double crested
cormorants ( i saw over one hundred yesterday and less than that today), coots,
blue winged teal and i think I saw two green winged teal this morning. Also
today I saw my first osprey of the year but some friends saw at least one
yesterday. The two I saw today seem to be comfortable around the nest. On the
Coon Rapids side upstairs behind the visitors center we have seen many of the
birds listed from the other side as well as many eagles, and a few other
raptors like sharp shins and red shouldered hawks and two rough legs. I have
a few photos from this past week at this link

[mou-net] Birds Frosty morning

2013-02-17 Thread Linda Schumann
I would like to report still having a large amount of winter birds on the
resort
grounds with some days the birds being exceptionally active. This report is
from
yesterday morning Saturday the 16th after we had a beautiful thick cotton-like
frost on the trees. This especially drew the evening grosbeak out to the
feeders.
There have been some days that the evening grosbeak do not show up such as a
warmer day or windy weather but they are always very close by.

I have a link to our facebook page with 22 photos of the birds and the frosty
morning you might enjoy seeing.

[mou-net] Birds and Beers Duluth coming up

2012-08-08 Thread Erik Bruhnke
This Saturday (August 11th) the third Birds and Beers Duluth will take
place. Feel free to come and go as you please, whether it's to be stopping
by for a beer or quick snack, or to hang out for the entire duration of the
evening. This month's Birds and Beers starts at 6pm, and is held at Sir
Benedict's Tavern on the Lake.

If you arrive into town and head east of the central part of downtown
Duluth (staying on Superior Street), you'll see Sir Ben's on the uphill
side of the road near 8th Avenue east. Sir Benedict's address is below.
805 East Superior Street
Duluth, MN 55802

I've named this month's gathering Preparation for the Migration, as we're
getting very close to massive movements of bird migration coming through;
and in particular, the local concentration of migrating raptors that will
be passing through soon at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. I'll bring my
raptor books along to the dinner for all to enjoy.

Hope to see you there!

The Groveland website does not have Happy Hour info, so I just called them.
Happy Hour ends at 5:30 pm every day and starts again at 10:00pm. He
mentioned $3-4.00 pints and 1/2 appetizers. For those who want to save some
money and talk birds also, you could get there before 5:30 if you can. I
think some birders will be there already or will arrive shortly.

[mou-net] Birds and Beers - Duluth!

2012-06-17 Thread Erik Bruhnke
My good friend Curt Rawn and I decided to get a Birds and Beers going in
Duluth this upcoming week. It's short notice, but on Tuesday, June 19th
we'll meet at 6pm at Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake. Sir Benedict's
(known as Sir Ben's) has the 3rd-largest selection of on-tap beers in
Duluth, and hosts a great view of Lake Superior from both inside and
outside of the tavern. Within a 10 minute drive through town is Canal Park
and Park Point, which are fantastic spots for birdwatching in the Duluth
area. We'll be there until at least 9pm. Like other Birds and Beers
gatherings, there isn't a cut off time and you're welcome to arrive leave
as you please. It's a fun time to relax and enjoy the good company of other
fellow bird nerds!

Sir Ben's
805 E Superior St.
Duluth, MN 55802

There will be more Duluth Birds and Beers in the future. Hope to see you
there!

*Birds and Beers is open to anyone with an interest in birds to get
together and talk some birds*

[mou-net] Birds in Hennepin County

2012-05-03 Thread Ben Harste
Today I didn't get to have binoculars but woke up to a FOY House Wren in
the backyard being chased away by a Bluebird.

I went for a brief walk at Purgatory Creek in Eden Prairie and saw a Palm
Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler The highlight and biggest surprise of all
was hearing a Sedge Wren singing near the boardwalk that leads to the
blind. At first I thought I was mis-hearing it and that it was a Marsh
Wren since most of that area is marshy but it was definitely a Sedge Wren
which is a first in Hennepin County for me!

This is our annual Woodcock Tailgate Party and we head out to Lebanon
Hills Regional Park, have some laughs and then 15 minutes after sunset try
to watch the woodcock display. The woodcocks start their display about
15 - 20 minutes after sunset, which means they will start around 8:20pm.
Since the display area is next to the visitor center at the park, we'll
meet there starting about 6:30pm and have an old fashioned tailgate
party-you can come early to mingle or come closer to the magic hour.
Bring your own food and beverages and we'll laugh until it's Woodcock
Time. The park closes at 10pm, so this gives us plenty of time to get
some great birding done. Some years we've had great horned owls show up
and still got great looks at the timberdoodles (aka woodcocks). The park
does allow alcohol.
Recommended to bring: lawn chair and boots, might be a little muddy,
insect spray (ticks could be a possibility). Dress in layers, it could be
warm when the sun is out and gets cool quickly when it's dark. Binoculars
and a flashlight are a good idea too.

Rain date is April 23th.

[mou-net] Birds and Beer in the news and live on March 05 at Riverplace Mpls

2012-02-20 Thread G Andersson
Ornithophiles,

The last Birds and Beer was at Wilde Roast Café at Riverplace in Mpls. I
think it was the 2nd biggest one. The next one is also at :

Wilde Roast Café, 65 Main St SE (it is right on the Miss River, E side)

March 05, Monday

6:00 to 9:00 pm

If you are put off by the Beer part, no need. I am somewhat abstemious
myself and so call it Birds and Beer, although officially it is Beers. :=)
It is not about drinking, but about talking about birds, photography,
travel, the spring, your garden ---whatever conversation you make with those
you sit near. OK it is usually birds and bird news and sharing info about
birds. Sharon is both voluble and vivacious and keeps discussion going, at
least at her end of the table. People are friendly.

There is no live music and Monday is burger night on the menu. a good deal.

For you in St Paul, like me, there might be one of these in our town, but
until then meet some new people who like nature and the outdoors and you
don’t have to cross the river for this one.

The Wilde Roast website is easy to find and so is BirdChick’s blog with B
B info. .

There was also an article in the Pioneer Press about discussion groups in
bars. B B is featured about ½ way down.

[mou-net] Birds near Thief River Falls?? (no sightings)

2012-02-08 Thread Shawn Conrad
I plan to be in Thief River Falls with some time to bird soon. I've
queried the MOU database without finding much, but I'm wondering if anyone
has been birding within a reasonable drive (~30 minutes) of Thief River
Falls recently. I'm especially interested in Snowy Owls and other
winter-only birds like winter finches, Bohemian Waxwings, shrikes, Snow
Buntings, Rough-legged Hawks, and *of course* any other owls or rarities.
If you have observations you would be willing to share with me I would be
very appreciative. I have never birded west of Norris Camp in winter.
Thanks!

[mou-net] Birds at pickerel lake this morning (Dakota Cty)

2011-12-01 Thread Jim Ryan
A quick stop on the way to work this morning to scan the mostly frozen
surface yielded:

*Canada Geese* - large medium - Dozens
*Gadwall* - 15
*Mallards* - 5
*Red-tailed Hawk* -perched on snag over the water. A bit of an unusual
spot.
*Crow* - 1 walking on the ice

Also saw male *Cardinal* at home.

Pleasant, but I was hoping to spot the *Wood Ducks* I saw there this
weekend to add them to my December list. Bust.

[mou-net] Birds since last week

2011-11-02 Thread Jim Ryan
Hello birders,
Nothing too exciting to report, but I thought a brief update on the normal
birds in the area was in order, since it's all I've seen in the city lately.

On several days last week I tried really hard to turn one of the many
medium sized* Canada Geese* (Richardson's) in Pickerel lake into a *Cackling
Goose*. No luck.

However, quite a few *Wood Ducks*, a* Double-crested Cormorant*, *Great
Blue Heron*, *Bald Eagles* and *Pileated Woodpecker* were present.

Monday Tuesday this week I had a flock of 50 or more *Cedar
Waxwings*eating hackberries in nearby trees. A dozen or so
*Robins* joined them. Careful looks at the flocks could not reveal a *Bohemian
Waxwing* amongst them or anything else of note.

Tonight, I stopped at Rogers Lake (in Mendota Heights, off Wagon Wheel
Trail) No birds at all on the lake - In all the times Ive ever stopped
there, I've never seen any birds there - does anyone know if that lake EVER
has any birds on it?

A few *Mallards* in the small marsh out front of Rogers Lake and there were
also *Robins*, a *Cardinal*, a *Junco* and the first *Tree sparrows* of the
season greeted me.

Sincerely,

Jim Ryan

[mou-net] birds and the Keystone XL pipeline

2011-10-26 Thread Steve Greenfield
If you haven't already written to the President and other politicians to let
them hear environmentalists' opinion on the proposed petroleum pipeline from
northern Canada's tar sands area to the Gulf Coast, now is about the last
chance before a decision is made whether to allow construction. Among other
critical issues, of special concern to birders is that the increased
extraction this will allow is projected to lead to cutting down over 700,000
acres of the boreal forest that covers the tar sands, replacing them with
settling ponds for the huge amounts of water used to force out the petroleum
in this method. Obviously this will be a tough sell against arguments for
energy independence, but a key thing to note is that it will not provide a
significant source of gasoline for the US, but will primarily be used to
refine diesel for export. Sites below give more information and an easy way
to send a message to Washington.

convivial Sharon Stiteler.

This one is back at Merlin's Pub on E. Lake St and 36th Ave from 6:00 to

[mou-net] birds in Dakota Co.

2011-06-06 Thread Steve Weston
Here are directions to some of the locations that we visited on Sunday:

Schaar's Bluff is off of CR42 east (and north) of Highway 55 heading to
Hastings.

The Sand Coulee area (SNA?) of Hastings is best accessed by turning east from
CR 316 onto Tuttle Drive and then left onto Thomas Avenue. Make a right turn at
trail.

UMore Park is in Rosemount and Empire Twp. The Orchard Oriole was about a 100
yards west of Akron Avenue on 155th Street on the south side of the road in a
cottonwood. The Sedge Wrens were in the field west of the Lone Tree (or
something like that) parking area off of Station Trail. Henslow's and
Grasshopper Sparrows were found here last year. Bobolinks are abundant.
Regretably, a map of the park is not easy to find on the web.

Randolph Industrial Park is at Hwy 56 and 284th Street.

[mou-net] Birds everywhere...

2011-05-11 Thread Alt, Mark
My neighborhood trees are greened out ... the mature red oaks, silver
maples, Green Ash, White and Pitch Pines attracted many waves of
passerines today that I saw by noon.

The first wave at 7 am was the best I saw, here is what I tallied:

1. Yellow-rumped Warbler (10+), flycatching, singing (4), staying
to lower canopy mostly, but also down to ground

2. Magnolia Warbler (4), all male, 2 singing, stayed in mid canopy
- mostly the pines, bathing in my waterfall

3. Bay-breasted Warbler (1), male, singing in White Pines

4. Blackburnian Warbler (1), male, foraging high in Ash trees,
call notes

5. American Redstart (5), 3 male, 2 female, calling and males
singing, with flashy flycatching forays

6. Chestnut-side Warbler (2), male, singing and foraging
mid-canopy

7. Yellow Warbler (2), males (singing) foraging mid canopy

8. Blue-winged Warbler (1), sex unknown, silently foraging high in
red oaks

9. Golden-winged Warbler (3), all males, 2 seen singing, may have
been more - their song was the commonest one heard today

10. Tennessee Warbler (2), males, heard singing in Silver Maple

11. Black and White Warbler, (1), adult male, silently nuthatch-like
foraging along red oak trunk and main branches

12. Northern Waterthrush (1), male singing and foraging near brush
pile

13. Palm Warbler (2), lower canopy and ground foraging

Vireos:

1. Blue Headed , softly singing

2. Yellow Throated, loudly singing

3. Warbling, silent

4. Red-eyed, flying through with scolding calls

[mou-net] BIRDS!

2011-05-07 Thread Nicholas Tangen
So today started out with a Spring Bird Count for the Landing Minnesota
River Heritage Park (not just for history buffs anymore). It was their Civil
War day as well so we were birding amongst Union soldiers. Let me tell you
this park is a great spot. We ended the count around 1:30 with 54 species!
Some highlights include;

Brown Thrasher
American Redstart
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers - these guys were everywhere in the Oak Savanna
restoration area
Great-crested Flycatcher
Yellow Warbler
Prothonotary Warbler!!

Since we felt we were on a roll the wife and I decided to keep on keeping on
and headed to the Bass Ponds/Old Cedar Bridge. We didn't get the number of
warblers that have been reported previously, but still had a good haul
including;

Common Yellowthroat
Forster's Tern
Yellow Warbler
Spotted Sandpiper
Northern Waterthrush
Nashville Warbler
Orange-crowned Warbler
Ruddy Duck
Yellow-headed Blackbird
Greater Yellowlegs
Black and White Warbler
Long-billed Dowitcher
Lesser Yellowlegs

Stopped briefly at T.S. Roberts as well.

Magnolia Warbler

We ended the day with a total of 85 species! This was a great day!

Hi All--

We were blanketed by about 2 inches of wet snow yesterday. Days with
snow-covered fields are often productive along roadsides. I have posted on
my blog photographs of a Vesper Sparrow, Lapland Longspur, and a Killdeer
from the Northfield (Rice Co.) area.

I looked for the Sandhill Cranes reported breeding in nearby Dakota Co., but
I did not find them. I will look again soon.

[mou-net] Birds in the blogs

2011-01-26 Thread Erik Bruhnke
Here are my two newest blog entries. I'm still new to creating blogs, but am
interested in sharing some fun happenings with the MOU listserv. There will
be homemade-articles about conservation and minimizing our impact on the
earth... in the near future. Anyone interested in following along in the
blog is welcome to join. I'm planning on posting as often as I go out
birdwatching, however blog updates might not be posted as often on the
listserv.

On a happy note too, I had my first Downy Woodpecker in the backyard here in
Duluth. Bird activity has been on-and-off since I moved in the house this
November - but seeing the cute little Downy Woodpecker always brings a
smile!

First blog is of this past weekend at the Birds and Beers event, and at

The second blog is about dark morph Rough-legged Hawks, and how fantastic

I would use Birds of Europe (1999), Mullarney, Svensson, Zetterstrom, and
Grant. It is about the size of the National Geographic guide.

The Handbook of Bird Identification for Europe and the Western Pelearctic
(1999), Beaman and Madge, is probably so heavy to travel with. Bigger and
heavier than a Sibley guide.

If there are more recent editions of these books I don't have them.

Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Lebanon Hills Regional Park. The woodcocks start
their display about 15 - 20 minutes after sunset, which means they will start
around 8:30pm. Since the display area is next to the visitor center at the
park, we'll meet there starting about 7:15 pm and have an old fashioned
tailgate party-you can come early to mingle or come closer to magic hour.
Bring your own food and beverages and we'll laugh until it's Woodcock Time.
The park closes at 10pm, so this gives us plenty of time to get some great
birding done.

Kirsten and I drove east of Faribault this afternoon to fi
Greeetings:

Kirsten and I drove east of Faribault this afternoon to find the migrating
Horned Larks and Bald Eagle nest Dave Bartkey reported to me yesterday. At
about 6 miles east on highway60 we turned south on Jacobs Avenue. We soon found
9 Horned Larks.  At 1 1/2 miles south of Highway 60 we saw the Bald Eagle
nest.  It was on the left side of the road.  Dave reported one Bald Eagle at
the nest. Today there were two eagles at the nest.  As we drove on South we saw
many flocks of Horned Larks, numbering in the 50's with  one or two snow
buntings mixed in. Next we saw a group of 8 Ring-necked Pheasants in the
pasture on the left.

We turned right on Jacob's Avenue on to 230th Street E. where we saw many
European Starlings  in the road.  They flew up to the farmer's two silos and
batn roof on the right. W estimated there were in excess  of 200 European
Starlings.

Nice sunny day for birding.
