MySQL University session on June 10: Securich - Security Plugin for MySQL
MySQL University: Securich - Security Plugin for MySQL http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Securich_-_Security_Plugin_for_MySQL This Thursday (June 10th, 14:00 UTC), Darren Cassar will rerun his February 25 presentation of Securich - Security Plugin for MySQL. (Recording of the session failed in February; hopefully it will succeed this time.) According to Darren, the author of the plugin, Securich is an incredibly handy and versatile tool for managing user privileges on MySQL through the use of roles. It basically makes granting and revoking rights a piece of cake, not to mention added security it provides through password expiry and password history, the customization level it permits, the fact that it runs on any MySQL 5.0 or later and it's easily deployable on any official MySQL binary, platform independent. MySQL University session on February 11: MySQL Galera Multi-Master Replication
MySQL Galera Multi-Master Replication http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_Galera_Multi-Master_Replication This Thursday (February 11th, 14:00 UTC), Seppo Jaakola Alex Yurchenko will talk about MySQL Galera Multi-Master Replication. Galera provides synchronous multi-master replication and uses a certification-based replication method for replicating transaction write sets in a DBMS cluster. The replication method requires close co-operation with database transaction processing and DMBS must support a specific replication API to be compatible with Galera. Codership has integrated Galera replication in the InnoDB storage engine, and the resulting MySQL/Galera cluster product has been published as a production-ready GA release in December 2009. MySQL University session on November 26: The Spider Storage Engine
The Spider Storage Engine http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/The_Spider_Storage_Engine This Thursday (November 26th, 14:00 UTC), Giuseppe Maxia will present the Spider Storage Engine. This session was originally scheduled for October 15th but had to be postponed for technical reasons. Here's from the abstract: Everybody needs sharding. Which is not easy to maintain. Being tied to the application layer, sharding is hard to export and to interact with. The Spider storage engine, a plugin for MySQL 5.1 and later, solves the problem in a transparent way. It is an extension of partitioning. Using this engine, the user can deal transparently with multiple backends in the server layer. This means that the data is accessible from any application without code changes. This lecture will briefly introduce MySQL partitioning, and then show how to create and use the Spider engine, with some practical examples. The talk covers the latest version of the Spider engine, which includes a condition pushdown feature that increases performance significantly. Gearman for MySQL http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Gearman_for_MySQL This Thursday (November 12th, 14:00 UTC), Giuseppe Maxia of the MySQL Community Team will present Gearman for MySQL. Gearman is a client/server infrastructure for generic tasks, usable on distributed servers, with little worry about the details. No matter what language you speak, Gearman can meet your needs in C, PHP, Perl, Ruby, shell scripting, and several more. Gearman can also work in conjunction with MySQL, either using UDFs, or simply through its basic architecture. GRAPH Computation Engine for MySQL http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/GRAPH_computation_engine_for_MySQL This Thursday (November 5th, 10:00 UTC - note the different time for this session!), Arjen Lentz of Open Query will present the brand new GRAPH computation engine for MySQL. From the abstract: Most of us have had to deal with hierarchies (trees) and graphs (such as friend-of-a-friend style problems), and have thus learn that this is -at best- a bit of a monster to do in an SQL/RDBMS. Until now. The GRAPH engine (GPLv2 licensed) is a MySQL storage engine allowing hierarchies and more complex graph structures to be handled in a relational fashion. MySQL University session on October 15: The Spider Storage Engine
The Spider Storage Engine http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/The_Spider_Storage_Engine This Thursday (October 15th, 13:00 UTC), Giuseppe Maxia will present the Spider Storage Engine. MySQL University session on October 1: InnoDB Internals: InnoDB File Formats and Source Code Structure
InnoDB Internals: InnoDB File Formats and Source Code Structure http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/InnoDB_Internals:_InnoDB_File_Formats_and_Source_Code_Structure This Thursday (October 1st, 14:00 UTC - one hour later than usually), Calvin Sun will give a session on InnoDB Internals: InnoDB File Formats and Source Code Structure. The InnoDB storage engine provides transactions, row-level locking, and automatic crash recovery. Its on-disk files play a pivotal role for those key features. This presentation describes how on-disk files are structured, how compressed tables are organized, and how long variable-length columns are stored. As we develop new features, it is inevitable for file format changes. We will explain how the new file format management works in the InnoDB Plugin. This talk also covers InnoDB source code structure. MySQL University: Speakers wanted!
We'd like to fill the remaining session slots for MySQL University this year. Currently, there are 7 available slots in 2009, as can be seen here: http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_University#Upcoming_Sessions Anyone who has something technical to say about MySQL qualifies as a speaker. MySQL University sessions take place on Thursday afternoons European time, and normally have between 20 and 30 attendees, but quite a lot of people listen to the recordings when the live session time isn't convenient for them. We're using Dimdim as our conferencing system, so the setup for speakers is very simple: Just grab a headset, start a Flash-enabled browser on either Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or Solaris, perform a 10-minute test with the MySQL University host, and you're ready for the live session. Everything is done through the browser, so you don't even need a telephone. So it's very simple to be a speaker, but what should you talk about? Well, maybe you already have an interesting topic suggestion (or, even better, a set of slides you can reuse), but you can also have a look at topics suggested by attendees: http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_University#Proposed_Sessions MySQL University sessions are open to anyone, not just Sun employees. Sessions are recorded (slides, audio, and desktop sharing), so if you can't attend the live session you can look at the recording anytime after the session. Please suggest your session(s) to Stefan Hinz (stefan.h...@sun.com), and let me know what date and time of the day would be best for you! -- Regards, Stefan Hinz stefan.h...@sun.com, Documentation Manager MySQL Phone: +49-30-82702940, Fax: +49-30-82702941, http://dev.mysql.com/doc Sun Microsystems GmbH, Sonnenallee 1, 85551 Kirchheim-Heimstetten Amtsgericht Muenchen: HRB161028 Geschaeftsfuehrer: Thomas Schroeder, Wolfgang Engels, Wolf Frenkel Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrates: Martin Haering -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/mysql?unsub=arch...@jab.org

Concurrency Control: How It Really Works http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Concurrency_Control:_How_It_Really_Works This Thursday (September 24th, 14:00 UTC (yes, 1 h later than usually)), Heikki Tuuri, the father of InnoDB, will give a session on Concurrency Control: How It Really Works. He'll describe how InnoDB manages concurrency control, so that the system protects data integrity. Beginning with the basics of transaction management, Heikki will include a discussion of the ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability) properties, and explain various transaction modes, locking, deadlocks, and more advanced topics such as the impact of next-key (gap) locking, referential integrity, XA (distributed transaction management) support, and more. While the discussion will focus on the InnoDB implementation, many of the concepts presented apply to other database systems and storage engines. MySQL University session on December 11: Random Query Generator
This Thursday (December 11th), Philip Stoev will talk about the Random Query Generator, a new QA tool that generates pseudo-random queries targeted to exercise a specific part of the server being tested. It then executes those queries to check for crashes or assertions or to compare the results returned from two different servers (two versions, two different storage engines, optimizer flags, etc.). It is also able to execute queries against a replication master, constantly checking that the slave is okay and has not diverged. Towards the end of the session, Philip will share his desktop and show some live examples. Make sure to adjust your volume in case the MySQL Server will utter agonized sounds. The session will start at 14:00 UTC / 8am CST (Central) / 9am EST (Eastern) / 14:00 GMT / 15:00 CET / 17:00 MDT (Moscow). MySQL University session on October 23: Using NetBeans with MySQL
The next *MySQL University* session will take place this Thursday, 23rd October. David Van Couvering will show how to use NetBeans with MySQL. Note that this session will start at 9:00 Pacific Time (18:00 CET, 17:00 BST). For this session, we'll use a new presentation system that we hope will make things much easier for both presenters and attendees: Dimdim (www.dimdim.com). If it works out as expected, Dimdim will replace our current presentation system which required attendees to open a browser, connect to an IRC channel on Freenode, and open a URL with a voice streaming application. With Dimdim, all you need to do is point your browser to a URL, and that's it. Here is the URL for this Thursday's meeting: http://webmeeting.dimdim.com/portal/[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]asPresenter=falsemeetingId=f8eb2cd8-edbb-102b-a126-003048944478attendeePwd= The Attendee Pass Code is 783326. Browsing the MySQL Documentation by Topic
Browsing the MySQL Documentation by Topic The MySQL Reference Manual is huge – far more than 2000 pages. On the MySQL documentation team, we've been discussing how to split it into easier to digest portions. But a real split doesn't seem the best thing to do, so we've decided to make use of our Arbitrary Docs System (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysqldoc-guide/en/mysqldoc-guide-tools-arby.html) that allows to create arbitrarily compiled documents from the MySQL Manual. That system, called Arby for short, was written by MC Brown, and creates dynamic excerpts from our documentation sources, rather than static copies, thus those excerpts are always as up to date as the complete Manual. On the MySQL Documentation Library page (http://dev.mysql.com/doc) we've added a table with documents that serve the information needs of specific target groups, such as database administrators or developers. Those documents are viewable online, and can also be downloaded in PDF format. Some highlights: * Security guide * MySQL guides for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows users * Backup recovery guide * Partitioning guide * HA/Scalability guide incorporating MySQL Proxy, memcached and DRBD In addition, we've also added direct links into the existing online manuals for key sections, such as the connectors, replication and SQL Syntax sections so that no matter who you are, you should be able to visit that page and instantly find what you want. You can find all topics on this page: http://dev.mysql.com/doc#topic-guides. We're open for suggestions to add additional guides or topics to be added to that list – just send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Regards, Stefan -- *** Sun Microsystems GmbHStefan Hinz Sonnenallee 1Manager Documentation, Database Group 85551 Kirchheim-Heimstetten Phone: +49-30-82702940 Germany Fax: +49-30-82702941 http://www.sun.de/mysql mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Amtsgericht Muenchen: HRB161028 Geschaeftsfuehrer: Thomas Schroeder, Wolfgang Engels, Dr. Roland Boemer Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrates: Martin Haering *** -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

PHP Documentation in the MySQL Manual
PHP Documentation in the MySQL Manual - MySQL can be used with a multitude of programming languages, but PHP is probably the most popular choice. For that reason, we always felt a bit bad about our PHP-related documentation being somewhat sparse, mostly consisting of links to the PHP manual. Well, that situation has changed. MC Brown of the MySQL Docs team has moved over the MySQL-related parts of the PHP documentation to the MySQL Reference Manual now. You can find it here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/php.html No worries, we haven't actually *moved* the PHP docs. Rather than that, they're being synced over from php.net to our mysqldoc repository on a regular basis, where they get merged into the MySQL docs and built in various format (HTML, PDF, CHM, etc.) just like the rest of the documentation. This means users who work with MySQL and PHP don't have to flip between manuals any more, but can rather look up all information in one place. We regard this as another sign that MySQL has a strong commitment towards the PHP users in our community. Currently, the PHP docs cover: * ext/mysql (the original set of PHP functions for accessing MySQL) * ext/mysqli (the improved and recommended set of functions) * PDO_MYSQL (the MySQL PDO driver for PHP's PDO interface) This will soon be amended by the newest set of functions: * ext/mysqlnd Tony Bedford of the MySQL Docs team will be in charge of writing the new section on ext/mysqlnd. Currently, he's in the process of reworking the ext/mysqli section which still lacks a lot of function descriptions. When done with this, the MySQL-related parts of the PHP documentation will be in much better shape, so that's a true win-win situation for PHP and MySQL. Needless to say, Tony will keep maintaining the PHP docs, so they'll always be up to date, complete, and correct. Go MySQL! Go PHP! :-) Regards, Stefan -- *** Sun Microsystems GmbHStefan Hinz Sonnenallee 1Manager Documentation, Database Group 85551 Kirchheim-Heimstetten Phone: +49-30-82702940 Germany Fax: +49-30-82702941 http://www.sun.demailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Amtsgericht Muenchen: HRB161028 Geschaeftsfuehrer: Thomas Schroeder, Wolfgang Engels, Dr. Roland Boemer Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrates: Martin Haering *** -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MySQL Server Version Reference
As some of you might have noticed we've restructured the documentation overview page quite a bit. Hopefully this will make it easier for you to find the information you need. We've amended http://dev.mysql.com/doc/index.html#refman with a section labeled Excerpts from the Reference Manual, where we'll add, well, excerpts from the MySQL Manual. To begin with, we've added a document called MySQL Server Version Reference that should make life easier for everyone who needs cross-version information. It's available for download but you can also browse it online: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysqld-version-reference/en/index.html Here's an overview: 1. The mysqld Options/Variables Reference contains all MySQL server options and variables for all MySQL versions. You can easily find out whether or not a particular option is available in a specific MySQL version, when it was introduced or deprecated, and more. For variables, that chapter gives a quick overview of core properties, such as if it's a status or a server system variable, if I can be changed dynamically, or if the scope is global or local. 2. The Reserved Words list contains all words reserved in a particular MySQL (major) version, with annotations about minor versions. The list is created by running a script against all MySQL versions starting from 4.1.0. (Yes, we've installed all MySQL versions on our documentation machine!) 3. The Functions and Operators chapter shows which MySQL functions are available in which version, and when they were introduced or deprecated. 4. The Build (configure) Options chapter should be useful for anyone building MySQL from source. 5. Eventually, the Key changes in MySQL releases chapter list security fixes and incompatible changes for the GA versions of MySQL 4.1 and 5.0 and for the beta and RC versions of MySQL 5.1. The Server Version Reference is not a static document but is being recreated on a regular basis. And it's not the only excerpt from the MySQL Manual you can find in the Excerpts section: We've also added a standalone Connectors book (covering all MySQL connectors and APIs) and guides for each individual MySQL Connector. Kudos go to Martin C. Brown who created all this. We hope it will make your work with MySQL more productive and enjoyable! -- Regards, Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED], MySQL AB Documentation Manager Berlin, Germany (UTC +1:00/winter, +2:00/summer) Skype:stefanhinz Cell:+491777841069 Desk:+493082702940 Fax:+493082702941 -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MySQL 5.1 Cluster Certification Study Guide
Hi, A little over a year since the project to write this book began, the MySQL 5.1 Cluster Certification Study Guide is now at long last available. Covering the Certified MySQL 5.1 Cluster Database Administrator exam, this study guide is the one authority to look to when you're preparing for the test. The book teaches you all the concepts, principles, and techniques that you'll need to know for the exam, with many practice questions and real-world examples to help you prepare for test day. The book is also an excellent reference guide for your real-world MySQL Cluster administration needs. Whatever your reason for becoming MySQL certified, this book gives you the information you need to help you better understand MySQL Cluster technologies and prepare for and pass the exams. The authors span from Australia over Europe to the East and West coast of the US. We had reviewers from four different continents. Seeing a project like this actually working and producing a great result is really fascinating. Carsten Pedersen helped to get the table of contents in place, wrote the introduction, and made sure certification program and study guide were kept in sync, while Stefan Hinz was the project lead, but, naturally, the lion's share was done by the authors: * Jon Stephens is not only the master of MySQL Cluster Documentation, he has actually moved himself halfway across the world be be closer to the Cluster developers while he works. His author's credits include Beginning MySQL Database Design and Optimization from Apress. * Mike Kruckenberg should be a familiar name to anyone reading Planet MySQL. Mike is co-author of Pro MySQL from Apress, and member of the MySQL Certification Technical Advisory Board. * Roland Bouman, blogger extraordinaire, winner of one of the 2006 MySQL Community awards, and hired in 2006 to (among many other things) develop the Cluster certification exams. If anyone knows what's on the exams, he is the one. * Stewart Smith not only hacks away at Cluster during his working hours, he's also very involved in the Australian Open Source community, and is often heard speaking on MySQL Cluster. * Solomon Chang, a founding member of LAMPSIG of Los Angeles and a professional DBA, has contributed material for exercises and reviewed much of the book. This is the first book we published all on our own. It's printed and shipped via lulu.com, a print-on-demand shop. You can order your copy here: http://www.lulu.com/content/1297960. It will also be available from retailers (Amazon as well as brick and mortar bookstores) soon. -- Regards, Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED], MySQL AB Documentation Manager Berlin, Germany (UTC +1:00/winter, +2:00/summer) Skype:stefanhinz Cell:+491777841069 Desk:+493082702940 Fax:+493082702941 -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MySQL Proxy documentation
The MySQL Proxy documentation is in place! The MySQL Proxy is an application that communicates over the network using the MySQL Network Protocol and provides communication between MySQL servers and MySQL clients. In the most basic configuration, MySQL Proxy simply passes on queries from the client to the MySQL Server and returns the responses from the MySQL Server to the client. By intercepting queries from the client, the Proxy can insert additional queries into the list of queries sent to the server, and remove the additional results when they are returned by the server. Using this functionality you can add informational statements to each query, for example to monitor their execution time or progress, and separately log the results, while still returning the results from the original query to the client. The proxy allows you to perform additional monitoring, filtering or manipulation on queries without you having to make any modifications to the client and without the client even being aware that it is communicating with anything but a genuine MySQL server. The MySQL Proxy is available for MySQL servers 4.1 or better and is documented in these MySQL Reference Manuals: * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysql-proxy.html * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-proxy.html * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/mysql-proxy.html It's also available in various download formats from the MySQL documentation overview page (http://dev.mysql.com/doc). Arbitrary Docs Machinery
The MySQL documentation team has created a way that enables us to extract arbitrary pieces of MySQL documentation and recombine them into a new document. With that machinery for creating arbitrary docs, we could, for example, do this: * Bond the Cluster docs with the rest of the Storage Engines. * Create a Cluster and Partitioning standalone guide. * Collate all the Windows sections into a single document. * Create a Connectors/APIs document where each of the current connector sections is a chapter in the new book. * Put a section anywhere, and remap any section to any block (i.e. section to chapter or appendix, chapter to appendix, you name it). Basically, we can combine excerpts from any documentation that can be found on http://dev.mysql.com/doc. The arbitrary docs machinery doesn't work in a copy-and-paste manner, but rather by including blocks (chapters, appendices, or sections) of the original documentation. This means that whenever the underlying documentation changes the arbitrary docs will also change. (You may have noticed that this concept is similar to views in a database.) This is what our users can do with that machinery: 1. Look at our sample PDF file that demonstrates what can be done; it combines all Windows-related installation instructions from various docs files: http://svn.mysql.com/svnpublic/mysqldoc/arbitrary/windows-sample.pdf 2. Tell us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) which new excerpts or combinations of documents you'd like us to create and make available on http://dev.mysql.com/doc. 3. Create arbitrary docs yourself. For this, you can find everything you need in the public copy of our mysqldoc repository (viewable with any web browser) on http://svn.mysql.com/svnpublic/documentation. To see how creating your own arbitrary documents works, try our sample files: 1. Use Subversion (SVN) to pull a working copy of http://svn.mysql.com/svnpublic/mysqldoc. 2. You need an environment that has make and xsltproc installed (any Unix-like system, or Cygwin on Windows). To create PDF files, you also need fop. 3. A sample arbitrary specification file (windows.aspec) and the necessary DocBook wrapper (windows.xml) are located in the arbitrary directory. A sample of the file generated from that specification is provided as windows-sample.pdf. 4. To generate HTML or PDF output for yourself: * Change to the upmost directory and run make realclean - this will clean out any old and temporary files. * Change to the arbitrary directory and run make idmap.refs - this will rebuild all the ID map reference files which are required for the arbitrary functionality. * Within arbitrary, run make windows-arbitrary.pdf to make the PDF version, or make windows-arbitrary.html to create the HTML version. MySQL docs: Replication Chapter Revamped
Replication Chapter Revamped We have completely reworked the replication chapter for the 5.1 manual. This targets a number of issues, including a major redesign (to make it easier to read and find topics), some updates to the information and processes, and incorporation of numerous bug fixes. You can see the new chapter here: * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/replication.html The main features: * New layout. We've ripped apart the old chapter format and replaced it with a new one. No information has been lost, although a lot of it has been moved around. * We now have four distinct sections: - Replication Configuration - includes details on setup (including How To notes), options and variables, replication formats, and a new section on common replication tasks. - Replication Solutions - this is designed to feature specific scenarios where replication is used. For example, it contains the scale-out solution that was in the FAQ, along with specific notes and guides on backups, splitting replication, and SSL. - Replication Notes and Tips - this collects together sections that were spread about the old structure, including upgrades, compatibility, known features and issues and the FAQ. - Replication Implementation - the innards of the replication system and how it works. In all cases we've either rewritten or hugely expanded the information, and there are also new illustrations with a consistent look and feel to describe layouts and architecture. The new structure will make it easier to add new functionality, scenarios and background information. For example, one other section that is planned, but not in the current documentation yet, is Replication Topologies. Other planned mprovements, such as the MBR/SBR/RBR decision table and implicit commit tables now have a more suitable home in the Replication Implementation section. New Free BitKeeper Client
New Free BitKeeper Client - If you're installing MySQL from our development source trees you need BitKeeper to access those source trees. You can find out which source trees are publicly available by looking at http://mysql.bkbits.net/. BitKeeper isn't free software, but there's a free client you can use to get read access to MySQL source trees (and that's all you need to install MySQL from a development tree). This year, that free BitKeeper client has been upgraded to version 2.0. The new version is needed to access the source trees; version 1.1 will not work any more for that purpose. The new free BitKeeper client provides a number of enhancements over the old client. Among other things, it has an integrated help, and the commands you can use are very similar to the commands of the commercial version (for example, bkf clone or bkf pull). The MySQL Reference Manual has been updated with information about the new client; see: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/installing-source-tree.html (replace 5.0 in the URL with 4.1 or 5.1 for other versions). Das offizielle MySQL 5 Handbuch
If you don't understand the title of this announcement then you're probably not exactly the target group I'm aiming at, but still I'd like to inform you about a new MySQL Press book that's just hit the shelves of the bookstores: Das offizielle MySQL 5 Handbuch. As you might have guessed, that's the German translation of the MySQL 5 reference manual. The translation covers MySQL 5.0 and MySQL 5.1, including features such as Partitioning. This book marks a new record among MySQL Press books, in number of pages and weight: Its 1339 pages weigh 1906 grams (67 ounces). But yet, this wasn't enough to cover everything, so there are an additional 500 pages on the accompanying CD-ROM. The Handbuch costs EUR 59.95 and can be found in bookstores or on the internet, for example at the Addison Wesley Germany pages: http://www.addison-wesley.de/main/main.asp?page=deutsch/bookdetailsProductID=117584 Regards, Stefan -- Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED] MySQL AB Documentation Team Lead. Change History and Release Notes in 5.0 Manual
For a long time, we've been recording changes to MySQL software in the Change History section of the MySQL Reference Manual. People familiar with the MySQL server will probably enjoy looking at the first change history section from July 1999, http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/news-3-23-0.html. The current production (GA) version of MySQL is 5.0. Until recently, changes to MySQL 5.0 were recorded here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/news.html. This has changed. For MySQL 5.0 (and currently only for that version), we have two separate offerings now: - MySQL Enterprise is MySQL AB's commercial offering for modern enterprise businesses. It includes MySQL Enterprise Server and the services provided by MySQL Network. - MySQL Community Server is for users who are comfortable configuring and administering MySQL by themselves. To make it easier for users of MySQL Enterprise and for users of MySQL Community Server to track changes in the software, we've split up the change history into two separate appendices now: Appendix E, MySQL Enterprise Release Notes, lists the changes from version to version in MySQL Enterprise Server, divided into sections for the following release packs; see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/releasenotes-es.html: - Rapid Update Service Packs are issued once a month and incorporate all the bug fixes and security updates introduced since the previous MySQL Enterprise Server release. - Quarterly Service Packs are issued each quarter and incorporate all the bug fixes and security updates introduced since the previous MySQL Enterprise Server release. - Hot-fix releases incorporate fixes for bugs that caused significant issues that are not released as part of a Service Pack. Appendix F, MySQL Community Server Release Notes, lists the changes from version to version in MySQL Community Server; see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/releasenotes-cs.html. The Release Notes are updated as bugs are fixed and features are incorporated, so that everybody can follow the development process. Documentation in RPM Format
If you're using RPM files to install the MySQL server, clients, and other components, we have good news for you: The MySQL Reference Manual is available in RPM format now! We've packaged HTML (one page per chapter) and PDF (US Letter and A4) into separate RPM files. In other words, for each version of the MySQL Manual (4.1, 5.0, and 5.1) there are two RPM files. For the 5.0 Manual, for example, there are: http://downloads.mysql.com/docs/mysql-refman-5.0-en-html-chapter-1-20061109.noarch.rpm http://downloads.mysql.com/docs/mysql-refman-5.0-en-pdf-1-20061109.noarch.rpm You can find all available RPM files here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/#manual Installation is as simple and straightforward as with any other RPM: shell rpm -i mysql-refman-5.0-en-html-chapter-1-20061109.noarch.rpm The MySQL Manual is frequently being updated, and once per day we create new RPM files. Updating your MySQL documentation is as easy as this now: shell rpm -U mysql-refman-5.0-en-html-chapter-1-20061110.noarch.rpm We hope this will make life easier for many of our users! We've added a new appendix to the MySQL Reference Manual: - Frequently Asked Questions About MySQL 5.1 (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/faqs.html) - Frequently Asked Questions About MySQL 5.0 (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/faqs.html) The FAQ answers frequently asked questions in the following areas: - General - Storage Engines - Server SQL Mode - Stored Procedures - Triggers - Views - INFORMATION_SCHEMA - Migration - Security - MySQL Cluster - MySQL Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Character Sets - Connectors APIs Those sections of the FAQ are linked from the appropriate chapters that describe the respective features, but we thought it'd be good to have all questions and answers in one place, rather than spreading them across the reference manual. Let us know if you're missing any particular topic! Regards, Stefan -- Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED] MySQL AB Documentation Team Lead. Option/Variable Reference for the MySQL Server
The MySQL Reference Manual has become huge (about 2000 pages), and this means it's becoming increasingly hard to find things. And often it's hard for the MySQL documentation team to decide where to put things, because no matter where we put them some people expect to find them in another place. We've discussed solutions to this dilemma, and decided that overview tables would address it best. We've made a start with an overview table that lists all available options, system variables, and server variables of the MySQL server v5: * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysqld-option-tables.html * http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysqld-option-tables.html We'll expand that table in many ways: We'll add more columns (such as version information), we'll make parts of that table appear in other sections of the Manual (for example, there would be a table that contains replication-related options and variables in the Replication chapter), and last but not least we'll add detailed summary tables that provide more detailed information for each individual option or variable. All this is made possible because we have created a new set of reference material that provides extensive metadata about the different options, variables and relationships. Currently, we are only generating summary information from this data. If you're interested, take a look at the mysqldoc repository to see how this is done: * http://svn.mysql.com/svnpublic/mysqldoc/ The XML file that contains all metadata is mysqld-optvars/options.xml. We welcome updates, corrections and improvements ([EMAIL PROTECTED])! Regards, Stefan -- Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED] MySQL AB Documentation Team Lead. GUI Tools Book and the ID mapping machinery
The MySQL GUI tools have been available as a suite of all tools for quite a while (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html). Therefore, it seemed logical to also provide a single manual covering all tools (MySQL Administrator, MySQL Query Browser, MySQL Migration Toolkit, and MySQL Workbench). We've done this now, and will remove the individual manuals once we're able to provide all formats. At the moment, we're providing PDF only: See http://dev.mysql.com/doc/#gui-tools. Combining the individual manuals into one GUI tools book has become possible due to our newly created ID mapping machinery. It allows us to compile customised documentation out of anything that's a DocBook XML file. The main problem is that there will be broken links in that customised document, and that's what the mapping machinery takes care of. With this in place, we could even create a customised manual that would consist of the introduction to the MySQL server, the GUI tools' table editor, and a chapter from the Cluster NDB API manual. Not that this would necessarily make a lot of sense ... But if you have a need for a senseful combination of MySQL documentation excerpts, don't hesitate to ask us for this! If it's possible to create (there are still a few limitations), we'll make it available to you, and/or to the general public. MySQL 5.1 Reference Manual in Chinese
The Chinese translation of the MySQL Reference Manual is complete. It was done by one of our partners from Beijing, People's Republic of China, and covers MySQL 5.1. NDB API Guide
Here's some information that's probably interesting for you if you're interested in MySQL Cluster ... As part of the effort of making MySQL Cluster a more mainstream product, it's been on our agenda for a very long time to rewrite the NDB API documentation so that it becomes usable by mere mortals. It took nearly three months to do this, because the new documentation is almost 300 pages long! The MySQL NDB API Guide covers two low-level APIs for writing applications that work with MySQL's NDB Cluster storage engine: - The NDB API is an object-oriented application programming interface for MySQL Cluster. The API provides ACID-compliant transactions, table and row scans that are similar in many ways to SQL cursors, and event handling. It also features object-oriented error-handling facilities. - The other API is the MySQL Cluster Management API (MGM API), a programming interface intended to provide administrative services for the cluster, such as starting and stopping Cluster nodes, Cluster logging, backups, and restoration from backups. All NDB API classes and subclasses are covered in the Guide, as is all of the MGM API function library. Also provided are a Cluster/NDB API glossary, class and relationshp diagrams, an index, and many examples. This new edition of the Guide covers the NDB API as implemented in MySQL 5.1. It's available for online viewing and download from here: - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/#ndbapi Regards, Stefan -- Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED] MySQL AB Documentation Team Lead. MySQL Test Framework documented
MySQL is shipped with a set of test cases and programs for running them. These tools constitute the MySQL test framework that provides a means for verifying that MySQL Server and its client programs operate according to expectations. That's handy for anybody developing MySQL or contributing code to MySQL. In case the preconfigured test cases (there are hundreds) don't suffice the MySQL test framework can be extended by writing test cases using the mysqltest language. The MySQL test framework has been around for a long time, but making use of the mysqltest language was something for the inaugurated only because there was no documentation, except for this: You can use the mysqltest language to write your own test cases. Unfortunately, we have not yet written full documentation for it. You can, however, look at our current test cases and use them as an example. Well, tables have turned, and the MySQL test framework is documented on more than 60 pages now. For anyone contributing code to MySQL it's a must-read. But don't be afraid, it's also fun to read, because it was written by Paul DuBois. CJK FAQ
MySQL has provided support for CJK languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) for a long time. There's a chapter in the MySQL Reference Manual that extensively covers MySQL character set support. Managing CJK data can be particularly tricky, though. Therefore we've just added a FAQ section that answers the most common questions about handling CJK contents and provides hands-on solutions to common problems. This Frequently-Asked-Questions section comes from the experiences of MySQL's Support and Development groups, after handling many enquiries about CJK issues. The FAQ is available for the MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 manuals: - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/cjk-faq.html - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/cjk-faq.html Regards, Stefan -- Stefan Hinz [EMAIL PROTECTED] MySQL AB Documentation Team Lead. Docs team looking for tech writer
Dear all, the MySQL documentation team is looking for a new technical writer to join the team in July or August. We're a small team but spread across the world (Australia, America, Europe). If you're interested in that job, or know someone who is, please drop me an e-mail. Here's an excerpt from the job description: - The MySQL documentation team is looking for another technical writer. For this we need the best and the most dedicated people around. You may work from anywhere in the world as long as you have the necessary skills and technical facilities to communicate across the Internet. Projects are coordinated from Germany, but our team members are expected to work independently. You should be prepared to work intensively with our developers when writing new documentation (in English, so you should be a native English speaker), or changing existing documentation. Of course, you should have in-depth knowledge of MySQL, and we'd appreciate if you were MySQL certified. As a technical writer, you should have proven experience with either writing software documentation or technical books. - The full text can be found here: http://www.mysql.com/company/jobs/tech-writer.html. New Connector/ODBC chapter on-line
We have done a complete rewrite of the Connector/ODBC docs - making this one of the best chapters in the MySQL Reference Manual: - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-connector.html Some of the pages you should look at include: - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-installation-binary.html - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-examples-overview.html - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-examples-tools.html - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-examples-programming.html - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/myodbc-reference-api.html The above URLs are examples; the new docs show up in the 3.23/4.0/4.1 and 5.0 manuals as well. You can find downloadable formats (HTML, PDF, CHM) on http://dev.mysql.com/doc. This is the first big work done by our new docs team guy, MC Brown. Re: Help with a SELECT query
Michael, thanks for your feedback! Jay Paulson (CE CEN) wrote: This helps a ton! Thanks! I didn' tknow about the INET_NTOA() or the INET_ATON() functions. That is much quicker to query on them than on a char set of ips. However, I did notice on the mysql web site that these functions are only available in 5.x but the way the page is set up I'm a little confused if this is true or not. I'm running 4.1.x and it would be nice to have those functions. The page below is where I found information about the function. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/miscellaneous-functions.html Thanks! Change the 5.0 to 4.1 in the URL to see the relevant page: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/miscellaneous-functions.html You will discoverr that INET_NTOA() and INET_ATON() were added to mysql way back in version 3.23.15. Unfortunately, the 5.0 version of the manual has no mention of when things were added to mysql in previous versions. You have to look at the 4.1 version of the manual for that. I suppose the reasoning is that the 5.0 manual is for only the one version of mysql, while the 4.1 manual is for versions 3.23, 4.0, and 4.1 combined, but I find it a real pain, and it seems to confuse people into thinking old things first arrived in 5.0. I understand part of your complaint: Several people have criticised us for having removed version-specific information from the (now split) manuals. On the other hand, we haven't removed any information about when features were added, behaviour was changed, and so on, for the major version covered in the manual you're currently looking at. For example, if some function was introduced in 3.23, you'll find the exact (minor) version when it was introduced in the 3.23/4.0/4.1 manual, but you won't find that version information in the 5.0 or the 5.1 manual.[1] I'd like to have split the 3.23/4.0/4.1 combined manual, too; however, we didn't have enough resources to do that, so that might be a cause of confusion for people using those MySQL versions. Sorry. [1] The reasoning behind this: Is it relevant for a 5.0 user to know that INET_ATON() was introduced in 3.23.15? We don't think it is, and many users had complained that the manual was full of clutter like that. Re: Help with a SELECT query
Jay, My quick opinion about this comment below. Unfortunately I'm still using MySQL 3.23.x in production (an on going battle to get them to upgrade is still in progress). However, our development server is using MySQL 4.1.x (yet another on going battle to get them to install 3.23.x). Therefore, having the information with the version number of when a function was introduced would be GREAT! I'm sure I'm not the only one with this confusion. :) If there ever becomes a time where you guys have enough resources to add that into the manual that would GREAT!!! We certainly want to do anything to make the manual more helpful! However, I think I don't understand your request: If you're using both 3.23 and 4.1, you only have to use *one* manual because 3.23, 4.0, and 4.1 are all covered in the same manual. What am I getting wrong? If you'd be using, say, 4.1 and 5.0, and you'd complain that you'd have to look into two manuals to get the whole story for your particular setup, I'd understand that. /Stefan -Original Message- From: Stefan Hinz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Fri 1/6/2006 12:40 PM To: Michael Stassen Cc: Jay Paulson (CE CEN); Gleb Paharenko; mysql@lists.mysql.com; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Help with a SELECT query [1] The reasoning behind this: Is it relevant for a 5.0 user to know that INET_ATON() was introduced in 3.23.15?
